Too much is as bad as too little; everything needs moderation.
The cold water Chen Xuehai splashed on him was a spur-of-the-moment thing. It was a decision he made after watching Liu Banxia’s live speech.
Although the cases Liu Banxia talked about to the students were a bit brutal, they didn’t dampen the atmosphere of the whole talk at all.
The whole thing made Chen Xuehai really curious; it was also the first time he’d watched Liu Banxia speak in person. He didn’t actually say anything that special, but the students down below just seemed to love listening.
Maybe that’s personal charm—being able to fire up the enthusiasm of these students.
He knew for sure that he himself didn’t have that kind of skill. Even though they were both deputy directors at the emergency center, and he was the deputy director for clinical work, he still wasn’t as good as Liu Banxia at winning people over.
On the surface this looked great, but he felt he had to pour that bucket of cold water.
Precisely because Liu Banxia is so good at "talking people into things," and the emergency center’s surgery department is a bit special—there’s a faint trend of it developing toward the big general surgery side.
He was worried a bunch of students would get carried away and rush headlong in that direction.
How many Liu Banxias are there? How many "six little ones" are there? By then the emergency center would be pouring a lot of resources into these interns, and resources are limited.
The likely outcome would be that they’d end up delaying the training of the emergency center staff, and also delaying the future of these soon-to-be interns.
Liu Banxia only really thought of this after his reminder, which was why he felt that bucket of cold water had been poured at just the right time.
But given their relationship, there was no need to spell everything out. He could understand what Chen Xuehai meant, and it really was something that should be done—so that was enough.
He didn’t have the mind to think about anything else now. It wasn’t easy to steal an hour of downtime, so of course he had to hurry home.
The two little babies at home were at their most fun stage right now. The moment you tease them, they’ll babble away and "chat" with you.
Even if nobody can understand what the other one is saying, they can still have a full-on conversation.
When he got home this time, Tang Dou and its puppies didn’t come trotting over to greet him like they usually did.
It was for their health, really. Qiaoqiao had finally steeled herself and taken the whole big family in for collective spay/neuter surgery.
Right now they were still recuperating, so they didn’t have much energy. Even when they saw Liu Banxia come home, at most they just gave a token wag of the tail.
"You really did come back early today, huh? Not that it helps—dinner’s not even started yet," Qiaoqiao said.
"It’s fine. I didn’t go on stage today, it was a very easy day," Liu Banxia said with a laugh.
"Tang Dou and the whole clan will need at least half a day more before they perk up a bit. Every single one of them is a little pitiful right now. But it’ll be good later—even just running around the neighborhood, we won’t have to worry about them causing trouble for other people’s dogs, and we won’t have to worry about other people’s dogs causing trouble for them either."
"Heh, Comrade Old Qiu also took Tiggie in for neutering today," Qiaoqiao said, smiling.
"He actually wanted to find Tiggie a wife and have a litter of little Tiggies. But once he saw our East, South, West, and Beifeng, and imagined having that many himself, he figured it’d really be too much to take care of."
"Exactly. This whole bunch is way too hard to serve. Look at what you lot do to the house every single day," Liu Banxia said, looking over at the staring Tang Dou.
Tang Dou gave him a glance, then lowered its head back down onto its front paws.
"Hey, why are you being fierce to Tang Dou? It’s recovering from surgery, that’s miserable enough," Qiaoqiao gave him a pat.
"Don’t worry, dogs recover a lot better than we humans do," Liu Banxia said.
"Don’t be fooled by how they look now. Just wait till tomorrow morning—they’ll be almost back to normal. We just shouldn’t take them out for walks for the next few days, let them play around at home instead."
"Is Old Qiu home? If he is, we should call him over and have a meal together. It’s been crazy busy lately, we haven’t had a get-together for ages."
"Yes, yes, I’ll go buy some pork and baby bok choy, and have Sister Xian wrap wontons for us," Qiaoqiao said happily.
"We’d better get in while we still can. In a little while, Sister Xian will probably need to start taking it easy. Then if we want wontons, we’ll have to queue up. Should we have her make extra?"
"Why’s that?" Liu Banxia asked curiously.
"Hehe, Sister Xian is pregnant too," Qiaoqiao said, eyes crinkling with her smile.
"Seriously? Since when?" Liu Banxia hurriedly asked.
"It’s been a few days. Sister Xian didn’t want us to spread it around, and you’ve been so busy, so I just haven’t told you," Qiaoqiao said solemnly.
Just looking at her expression, Liu Banxia knew.
This wasn’t about him being busy at all; clearly this girl had just forgotten about it herself.
"Oh come on, what are you staring at? That’s how it is, at the beginning you’ve got to keep it secret very carefully." Qiaoqiao slapped him again.
"Then we all the more need to have a proper feast. This is also Comrade Old Qiu’s big happy event. But how come he can’t show off in his Moments?" Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"He got the order too, doesn’t dare talk nonsense. So it seems you’re actually the first to know about this. I should’ve waited a couple more days to tell you." Qiaoqiao said.
Liu Banxia pinched her nose. Good news like this ought to be shared as early as possible.
As for calling people over, of course that was his job.
He had been a bit worried Qiu Huaili might have some social engagement outside, but now he was very relieved; the guy had to stay obediently at home.
In less than half an hour, the Qiu Family, the three of them, strolled over.
Little Doudou was full of energy these days and often came over to play. She had a full set of little shoes and clothes kept here.
Once she came in she greeted everyone first, then ran over to Tang Dou’s family to offer comfort.
"Sister Xian, Brother Qiu, this is huge good news. Have you decided which hospital yet?" Liu Banxia asked.
"I knew Qiaoqiao couldn’t keep it in. Doctor Li at the Third Hospital—when I was pregnant with Doudou, she did my prenatal checkups too." Wang Jingxian said.
"Banxia, we’re going to have three kids in our family. You and Qiaoqiao need to work harder." Qiu Huaili said happily.
"Of course. But while Sister Xian is still moving around easily, we’ve got to stock up on more wontons." Liu Banxia said.
"What for? Don’t bully my wife like that. She needs proper care now. If it weren’t for coming to your place for dinner, I wouldn’t have let her out no matter what." Qiu Huaili said quickly.
"Oh please, do we really need to be that cautious? It’s not like I haven’t been pregnant before, I know what I’m doing." Wang Jingxian said, a bit annoyed.
"You can never be too careful. We must be careful, careful, and even more careful." Qiu Huaili said very seriously.
"Go chat with Banxia, you two haven’t seen each other in ages. We’ll figure out the food and drinks." Wang Jingxian gave him a push.
Qiu Huaili had no choice but to go off to the side with Liu Banxia.
"Really, congratulations. I’m not just saying that." Once they sat down, Liu Banxia said.
"Ai... I’m super nervous now. Banxia, I’m not putting on a show here, I’m really nervous, even more than when Xian was pregnant with Doudou." Qiu Huaili said.
"It’s fine. Sister Xian has experience, and our park’s medical facilities are pretty good. That’s already great." Liu Banxia said, smiling.
"Right, how come you got off work so early today? The last few times you came over, you always dragged it out forever before heading home." Qiu Huaili asked.
"I really lucked out today. I just happened to go to the medical school for a small event, so I could head home early." Liu Banxia said.
"But it’s also because of what happened today that I realized another principle. Too much is as bad as not enough. In terms of grasping the ’degree’ in some matters, I’m really quite off."
As he spoke, he went over everything that had happened today, rambling it all out to Qiu Huaili.
Don’t be fooled by how Qiu Huaili always calls Liu Banxia his lifesaver; in reality, whenever Liu Banxia ran into tricky problems at work, he talked to Qiu Huaili quite a lot.
Comrade Old Qiao was good too, but Comrade Old Qiao didn’t stay around here that often.
"Actually this kind of situation already showed up a bit in the last while. It’s about how I’ve been training Xu Yino and the others—the direction of my training went a bit off." Liu Banxia went on.
"Right now they can handle some higher-level surgeries, but for the basic and mid- to low-level surgeries in general surgery, their grasp isn’t that comprehensive—their foundation is a bit weak."
"In fact, that’s because I overdid it a bit in how I trained them. Back then I didn’t think too much, just thought that as long as I培养 them quickly, I could relax sooner."
Qiu Huaili nodded with a smile. "Even though I don’t really understand your surgeries, I get what you mean. That’s exactly how this kind of thing goes."
"To be honest, I’ve had a similar experience. This was more than ten years ago. I really had high hopes for a fresh graduate I personally recruited into the company."
"At the time I thought our company could actually培养 a top executive from the ground up, so I gave him a lot of opportunities."
"Precisely because I gave him too many opportunities, not only did some people in the company feel unhappy, it also kept him from truly seeing himself clearly."
"You could say I ruined a piece of fine jade with my雕琢. I made the same mistake—too impatient, pushing too hard. After that, I paid a lot of attention to this in my work."
"But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with how you’re training them now. You surgeons are still a pretty特殊 kind of profession. Those surgeries, whether high-level or low-level, all need to be mastered."
"They’re still so young. Now that you’ve realized this, just take it slow. I don’t think there’s any problem. Any kid who can get into medical school and reach the internship stage is usually quite good."
"Your emergency center is in a phase of rapid development. It’s impossible for you to always run into interns as high-level as Xu Yino and the others, right? Most of the time you still have to search through a vast sea to find one."
Liu Banxia nodded. That was indeed the reality.
