The Entire Mountain Is My Hunting Ground

Chapter 628: Dog Eats Dhole, Tiger's Dish

  • Next Chapter

Yesterday, he had taken down four yellow-haireds. Today, he had ripped into the groins of both the male and female jackals. Black Tiger had truly made Zhao Jun see him in a new light.

Seeing Black Tiger begging for food, Zhao Jun squatted down beside him. He reached out and stroked him from head to neck, all the way down his spine, saying gently, “Easy, Black Tiger. Just a minute.”

This was the way of a Hunter. They always had more patience and affection for their most capable hounds.

After he spoke, Zhao Jun started to get up, but before he did, he moved his hand back to Black Tiger’s head. He ruffled his perked-up ears and said with a chuckle, “You know, with that big blocky head of yours, you’re actually kinda cute… heh heh…”

Black Tiger glanced up at Zhao Jun, perhaps wondering, ‘This morning, when you were tying me up, you said my head was too small for my thick body. You called me a damn freak.’

Zhao Jun walked over to Big Fatty. He took some medicine and bandages out of his satchel and first wrapped a bandage diagonally around Big Fatty’s head, securing the injured ear against his skull. Then, he bandaged the other two wounds on Big Fatty’s body.

Next, Zhao Jun checked on Flower Cat. He had seven or eight injuries, but most were superficial. The only one that was somewhat serious was on his belly, where a male jackal had bitten through the skin.

Zhao Jun examined it closely and saw it wasn’t a major issue, so he applied medicine and bandaged it up.

Last was White Dragon.

He was in better shape than Flower Cat, with no serious bite wounds. Still, he had quite a few bites and scratches from the jackals, but they were all superficial and hadn’t gone deep.

By the time Zhao Jun finished bandaging Big Fatty and Flower Cat and came over to him, White Dragon’s wounds had already stopped oozing blood.

Wounds like these would heal completely after half a month of rest at home. With an anti-inflammatory shot, it would be even faster; he’d be fine to head back into the mountains in a week.

But since they still had to head home, a long trek over mountains and ridges, Zhao Jun didn’t mind the extra work. He treated and bandaged all of White Dragon’s wounds.

It had to be said, with more money coming in recently, Zhao Jun was becoming more and more attentive to his hunting dogs.

His satchel contained not just bandages, but also medical gauze and adhesive tape. For some wounds that were difficult to wrap, he would trim the fur around them, press a piece of gauze on directly, and then stick it down with a piece of tape.

After tending to all three dogs, Zhao Jun packed away the medicinal powder, bandages, and other supplies. He hung his satchel on a nearby tree branch, then drew the Deer Hide Knife from his back and approached the Jackal King that Black Tiger had been guarding.

With the knife in one hand, Zhao Jun grabbed one of the Jackal King’s hind legs with the other and flipped the carcass onto its back.

This gave Zhao Jun another look at the wound on the Jackal King’s groin. He instinctively glanced at Black Tiger, who was wagging his tail at him. Zhao Jun chuckled, “Soon, soon. You’ll get your meat.”

With that, Zhao Jun inserted his knife into the wound on the Jackal King’s lower abdomen and sliced upward, opening its chest cavity. He then pulled out the intestines.

Following the intestines upward, Zhao Jun used his knife to sever the ligaments and remove the entire pluck. He then cut out the Jackal Heart and offered it to Black Tiger.

When Zhao Jun held the Jackal Heart out to him, Black Tiger twitched his nose and sniffed it. He politely took it in his mouth, but a second later, he let it drop to the ground.

Zhao Jun was taken aback. Seeing that Black Tiger made no move to pick the Jackal Heart back up, he realized that dogs don’t eat jackal organs.

How could Zhao Jun be so sure?

Because given Black Tiger’s gluttonous nature, if there was something he wouldn’t eat, no other dog would touch it.

Sure enough, out of curiosity, Zhao Jun tossed the Jackal Heart to Big Fatty. Big Fatty stretched his nose out, sniffed it, and then turned his head away.

Seeing that Big Fatty wouldn’t eat it either, Zhao Jun began carving meat from the Jackal King’s belly. He handed the first strip to Black Tiger.

As he held the meat to Black Tiger’s mouth, Zhao Jun, not caring whether the dog understood, murmured, “Take your time. No one’s going to steal it. You can eat as much as you want.”

Black Tiger probably understood. He took the meat in his mouth, but instead of carrying it off to eat like he usually did, he started chewing right away.

While Black Tiger ate, Zhao Jun quickly cut another piece of meat for Big Fatty. But as he came back to carve a piece for White Dragon, he saw that Big Fatty had spat his out.

Zhao Jun tentatively offered the meat in his hand to White Dragon, but he just sniffed it and turned his head away. He tried with Flower Cat, with the same result.

It was true that dogs often lost their appetite after being injured, but that usually applied to severe injuries. The wounds on these three were not that serious.

Zhao Jun picked up both strips of meat and gave them to Black Tiger. The dog, on the other hand, had a great appetite, taking the meat and chewing it greedily.

“Go on, eat up,” Zhao Jun said, smiling as he patted Black Tiger’s back. He cut three more strips of meat and placed them in front of him. Only then did he take an aluminum lunchbox from his satchel, break his single remaining steamed bun into three pieces, and give one to each of Big Fatty, White Dragon, and Flower Cat.

They wouldn’t eat the jackal meat, but they ate the steamed bun.

But the bun was too small. The three dogs finished their pieces in no time, then stared intently at Black Tiger eating the meat, looking quite envious.

Zhao Jun couldn’t stand to see that. Even back when he thought Black Tiger was useless, he had never been stingy with his food.

So, Zhao Jun cut two more strips of jackal meat. He took one over to offer them, but the three dogs remained completely uninterested.

This was the first time Zhao Jun had hunted jackals in two lifetimes. He had only known that dogs wouldn’t eat a bear’s entrails, and that a rare few wouldn’t even eat bear meat.

But today, Zhao Jun learned something new: the vast majority of dogs, it seemed, would not eat jackal meat.
