The Evil Mother-in-law: Torment Children, Work Hard, Be Rich!
Chapter 845: Blind for a Moment, Not for a Lifetime
Gu Honglian “?”
Wife? How disgusting, to hear such a title thrown in her face.
The beggar in front of her must be out of his mind, coming here looking for his wife.
“Who’s your wife?”
Gu Honglian rolled her eyes and lifted her head, heading towards the pig farm.
She initially felt some sympathy for the beggar squatting at the base of the wall, but now she sees it’s unnecessary.
Such a sleazy appearance, probably drove his wife away with gambling, drugs, and vices.
Fan Tong has been drifting around these days, the old wounds from being beaten by the Deng Mansion staff were unhealed, now being punched again by a beggar over slop; new wounds piled on old ones, he exudes a foul stench.
Plus, his clothes are tattered, his hair greasy, his face swollen out of shape.
He is a far cry from the clean, tidy scholar he once was.
Gu Honglian didn’t recognize the man before her as her ex-husband Fan Tong.
Fan Tong stepped forward and grabbed Gu Honglian’s wrist.
He thought Gu Honglian’s remark about who is your wife was just a bashful complaint expressing dissatisfaction with him.
Being dissatisfied with him meant caring about him.
“Stinky beggar, don’t touch me.” Gu Honglian looked down at the beggar before her.
Fan Tong widened his eyes and said, “Wife, it’s me.”
How come the voice is so familiar?
Gu Honglian furrowed her brow, scrutinizing Fan Tong.
Indeed, the swollen face had a familiar outline.
That’s when she realized the person before her was her cheap ex-husband.
“Fan Tong?” Gu Honglian exclaimed.
Even though she knew Fan Tong was having a hard time, living like a stray dog, seeing it firsthand still shocked Gu Honglian.
How is this any different from a beggar?
“So dirty, so smelly, get lost quickly.”
Gu Honglian shook off Fan Tong’s hand, jumping two feet away.
Taking out a handkerchief to fan herself, she covered her mouth and nose.
“Honglian, I’ve come to take you home. I was wrong before; can you forgive me?”
The disdain in Gu Honglian’s eyes stung Fan Tong.
How could a wife despise her husband; Gu Honglian must have been led astray by her sister-in-law during this period.
Fan Tong was displeased with Gu Honglian’s reaction but was quick to slide down on his knees to apologize for a comfortable future.
Gu Honglian looked at Fan Tong in front of her, thinking she had heard wrong.
Is he crazy?
Why does he think others would turn back around to forgive her?
When Gu Honglian pressed her handprint on the divorce document, she secretly vowed to remarry with as much grandeur as Tong Pandi, to make Fan Tong regret.
When she was exhausted from feeding pigs and couldn’t think clearly, she relied on “In the future I’ll stand glamorously before Fan Tong slapping him in the face” to persist and keep pushing forward.
But she hadn’t waited to remarry when Fan Tong came looking for her?
Seeing the down-and-out Fan Tong now, Gu Honglian didn’t feel any satisfaction; instead, it felt as if she had stepped in dog poop, utterly disgusting.
“Regretting already, huh?”
Gu Honglian wouldn’t miss such a chance to kick him while he’s down.
Fan Tong’s eyes brightened; there was hope.
“Honglian, I regret it, I really regret it, please forgive me this time. I promise that if you reconcile with me, I will absolutely treat you well; you will always be the daughter-in-law of the Fan Family.”
“Honglian, I misunderstood you on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month; I now know you haven’t lost your purity. Now that the misunderstanding is cleared, come back with me.”
“That day at the brothel, I was coaxed into going. If you’re angry, you can beat me or scold me.”
“You’re working so hard here on the pig farm, your sister-in-law is so heartless, why doesn’t she send Taohua here to raise pigs? If you come back to me, I can earn money by teaching or copying books to support you. With my ability, not only can I sustain you, I’ll even buy two maidservants to serve you.”
…
Fan Tong seemed not to understand Gu Honglian’s sarcasm, continually apologizing and pleading.
Originally, he felt confident he could handle Gu Honglian; after all, in his eyes, Gu Honglian was always brainless.
Like a fence-sitter, wherever the wind blew strong, she’d lean towards that side.
Besides repenting, he deliberately mentioned how hard it was for Gu Honglian to feed pigs here. With Gu Honglian’s character, if she could live in comfort, how would she willingly feed pigs?
Fan Tong spoke until his mouth was dry, opposing him, Gu Honglian kept silent, only looking at him coldly with her eyes.
The gaze was playful, contemptuous, and disdainful.
Gu Honglian said, “You regret it? It’s not about regretting divorcing me! It’s not about regretting leaving my sister-in-law’s family! You regret not killing Xu Po back then to expose you falsely claiming the title, you regret not fully establishing yourself in Shengjing before falling out with my sister-in-law.”
“You want me to go back with you? We’ve already divorced, what relation do I have with you?”
Fan Tong’s thoughts were exposed by Gu Honglian, and he clenched his fingers.
Seeing Gu Honglian’s firm attitude, gritting his teeth, he suddenly knelt down with a thud, crying bitterly: “Honglian, I really regret it, please forgive me once.”
‘A man’s knees have gold beneath them,’ now that he’s knelt down, surely Gu Honglian can see his sincerity.
He’s had enough of dodging and starving days.
As long as Gu Honglian accepts him, he wouldn’t fear Deng Chief Historian bothering him.
After all, Tong Huaqiong has the backing of the Crown Grandson, a Chief Historian wouldn’t dare to touch the Crown Grandson’s people.
Even if Tong Huaqiong doesn’t accept him, he can go with Gu Honglian to seek refuge with Gu Baishuang; Gu Baishuang’s son, Nie Xiaofeng, is the Deputy General, rumored that even Prince Ning wants him on side. With Nie Xiaofeng as backing, no one would dare to touch him.
Gu Honglian lifted her eyelids slightly and said, “Fan Tong, why don’t you take a look at yourself in a puddle of urine, see what you look like now? What qualifies you to ask me to return, I could be blind momentarily, but I won’t be blind my entire life.”
“We’ve divorced already, I am I, and you are you, your regret has nothing to do with me. Like someone who doesn’t understand human language, sticking on stubbornly, no wonder you failed the county examination three times; turns out it’s a comprehension issue.”
“In my eyes now, you’re nothing but a stinky beggar, you’d better get lost. If you don’t, I’ll let the dogs bite you. Now, Deng Chief Historian’s people are hunting you everywhere; if you dare to bother me again, I’ll inform Deng Chief Historian’s people about your whereabouts.”
Gu Honglian pushed open the pig farm gate and slammed it shut with a bang after her scolding.
The whole pigpen is much more handsome than Fan Tong.
“Stinky beggar”, the words stung Fan Tong.
Until the door before him slammed shut, Fan Tong hadn’t come back to his senses.
Fan Tong couldn’t reconcile being treated like this by Gu Honglian.
Though it’s past the first month, the air was warming, but Fan Tong was wearing thin shabby clothes, plus standing at the drafty spot for long; now he felt colder all over. Thinking about the stray dog life he’d continue in Shengjing left him even colder inside.
“Honglian.”
“Honglian.”
“Open the door; I was wrong; I really know I was wrong.”
Responding to Fan Tong was the guard dog of the pig farm.
The big dog barked wildly, pouncing at Fan Tong; terrified, Fan Tong lifted his legs and fled,
Tong Huaqiong happened to be here inspecting the pig farm, hearing the wailing outside, she lifted the carriage curtain to see a dog chasing after a person—Fan Tong running for his life.
She didn’t realize that person was Fan Tong, she just thought that dog was familiar; upon a closer look, it was her own dog.
Tong Huaqiong whistled, and the dog stopped chasing, leaping onto Tong Huaqiong’s carriage.
Escaping from the dog’s mouth, Fan Tong fell into a sitting heap on the ground, stunned for a long time without coming back to his senses.
