The Extra Who Inherited Ragnarok

Chapter 189: A Brand New Day

The first thing Noah noticed when he woke was the ceiling.

White.

Plain.

Uninteresting.

For several seconds, he simply stared at it.

No crimson eyes.

No ancient chains.

No black door.

No Watcher.

No impossible forest trying to swallow him whole.

Just a ceiling.

Noah exhaled slowly.

"Finally."

He tried to sit up.

His body immediately disagreed.

Pain spread through his ribs and shoulders, forcing him back against the pillow.

A small system window appeared.

[HOST CONDITION: STABLE.]

[PHYSICAL FATIGUE: SEVERE.]

[MANA RESERVE: 18%.]

[RAGNAROK RESONANCE: UNSTABLE.]

Noah stared at the final line.

"Of course."

He closed the window.

For once, he didn’t investigate.

He didn’t ask Dead Zone what it meant.

He didn’t try to force his power to respond.

He simply closed his eyes.

You should rest.

Dead Zone’s voice was unusually quiet.

Noah almost smiled.

"You too."

I don’t sleep.

"Then pretend."

A pause.

Fine.

The silence that followed was strangely peaceful.

Noah fell asleep again.

Three days later, he was still recovering.

Valhalla Academy had already returned to its usual rhythm.

Students crossed the enormous courtyard carrying books, weapons, training equipment and enough gossip to fill another library.

Classes had resumed.

Training grounds were open.

Squads were reorganizing.

The academy had moved on.

Noah hadn’t.

He sat beneath a large tree overlooking one of the training fields, watching students practice.

A breeze moved through his black hair.

His uniform still felt unfamiliar.

After everything that had happened in Hildgard and Hrafnvier, sitting somewhere this ordinary felt almost strange.

Eric dropped onto the grass beside him.

"You look terrible."

Noah glanced sideways.

"Good morning to you too."

"I’m serious."

"So am I."

Eric laughed.

"You’re finally starting to sound normal again."

Noah looked toward the training field.

"I feel normal."

"You’re staring at people training for twenty minutes without blinking."

"I blink."

"You blinked once."

Noah considered that.

"Still counts."

Eric shook his head.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Eric looked toward the academy buildings.

"Feels weird being back."

"Yeah."

"No tournament."

"No monsters."

"No forests trying to kill us."

Noah looked at him.

"You had to say it."

Eric grinned.

"Probably."

A whistle sounded across the field.

Students began moving toward their designated areas.

Eric stood.

"Come on."

"Where?"

"Training."

Noah stared at him.

"I just woke up from three days of sleeping."

"And?"

"And I’m tired."

Eric folded his arms.

"You can’t keep hiding behind recovery forever."

Noah sighed.

"I knew there was a reason I liked you less."

"You don’t like me less."

"True."

Eric smiled.

"Come on."

Noah slowly stood.

His body protested.

He ignored it.

They walked toward the training grounds together.

Across the courtyard, Laura sat alone on a stone bench with an open book resting on her lap.

She wasn’t reading.

Her eyes remained fixed on the same page.

Her thoughts were somewhere else.

The forest.

The crimson eyes.

Roana.

The Watcher.

The door.

She remembered Roana’s voice.

You were never the traitor.

Laura closed the book.

Where was she now?

Was she alive?

Had she escaped?

Or had the forest taken her?

Laura didn’t know.

And somehow, that uncertainty bothered her more than an answer might have.

She looked toward Noah.

He was already walking toward the training field with Eric.

A faint smile crossed her face.

At least he was alive.

For now, that was enough.

Laura opened her book again.

But before she could read another line, someone passed behind her.

"Valhalla really hasn’t changed."

Laura looked up.

The student continued walking without stopping.

She watched him disappear into the crowd.

Then her eyes returned to the book.

Valhalla hadn’t changed.

But the people who had returned to it had.

And none of them knew just how long that peace would last.

Morning settled over Valhalla Academy with an almost suspicious sense of normality.

Students crossed the enormous courtyard in groups, carrying books, training equipment, and half-finished breakfasts. The sound of wooden practice swords striking against one another echoed from the training grounds.

For most students, it was simply another morning.

For Squad Seven, it felt different.

Noah Blackwood stood outside the academy’s main training hall, staring at the massive stone building.

He had spent the last few days recovering from Hildgard and the forest.

His body was still tired.

His mind was worse.

He could still remember the crimson eyes.

The Watcher.

The forest.

And everything that had happened after.

Noah exhaled quietly.

"Back to normal."

A voice came from behind him.

"You don’t sound convinced."

Noah turned.

Laura Esteria stood there with a book tucked beneath one arm.

Her expression was calm, but her eyes carried the same exhaustion he had noticed in everyone who had returned from Hrafnvier.

"Because I’m not," Noah replied.

Laura gave him a small smile.

"Fair enough."

They walked into the hall together.

The first class of the morning was Combat Theory, taught by Professor Astrid Veyr.

The classroom was large enough to accommodate several squads at once. Rows of wooden desks faced a wide blackboard covered with diagrams of mana circulation, physical reinforcement, and combat formations.

Noah sat beside Eric.

Sophia and Luna sat a few rows ahead.

Damien was already taking notes.

Laura sat near the window.

Professor Astrid entered without wasting a second.

She placed several books on the desk.

"Good morning."

The room answered unevenly.

Astrid looked across the students.

"Today, we’re discussing something every combatant eventually learns."

She turned toward the board and wrote:

POWER WITHOUT CONTROL IS A LIABILITY.

The classroom became quiet.

"Raw strength," she continued, "is meaningless if you cannot control it. A warrior who possesses overwhelming power but lacks discipline is more dangerous to themselves than their opponent."

Noah stared at the sentence.

For some reason, it felt directed at him.

Not personally.

But close enough.

Astrid continued explaining how mana, physical ability, weapon compatibility, and combat instincts worked together.

She also reminded the class that official ranks were measurements, not absolute definitions of a person’s potential.

"An F-Rank today does not necessarily remain an F-Rank forever."

A student near the back scoffed.

"Usually they do."

Several students laughed.

Noah didn’t react.

Eric leaned closer.

"Ignore him."

"I am."

"You’ve been staring at him for ten seconds."

"I’m ignoring him aggressively."

Eric nearly laughed.

Laura glanced over from her desk.

For the first time that morning, the tension around Squad Seven loosened.

It was small.

But it mattered.

After class, the students spilled into the courtyard.

Squads gathered naturally, discussing training schedules and assignments.

Noah noticed several unfamiliar faces among the younger students.

One group stood near the fountain.

A girl with long brown hair was arguing with a tall boy.

"Maria, you’re the one who lost the map."

"I didn’t lose it. Zelen misplaced it."

"I was holding it."

"Exactly."

Noah raised an eyebrow.

Eric followed his gaze.

"Freshmen?"

"Probably."

A second boy standing beside them sighed.

"Can we please survive one morning without arguing?"

The girl crossed her arms.

"I’m Maria Billu."

The tall boy looked mildly annoyed.

"Zelen Kane."

The third boy gave a polite nod.

"Zane Nomid."

Another student stood slightly behind them, listening rather than participating.

"Torino," he said simply.

Eric smiled.

"Squad?"

Maria pointed toward the academy entrance.

"Squad One."

Noah nodded.

"Squad Seven."

Maria looked at him for a moment.

Recognition appeared on her face.

"Wait. You’re Noah Blackwood."

Noah sighed.

"That’s usually how names work."

Eric laughed.

Maria grinned.

"I heard about what happened in Hildgard."

The atmosphere changed.

Only slightly.

But Noah noticed.

Laura did too.

"Rumors grow quickly here," Laura said.

Maria immediately realized she’d touched something uncomfortable.

"Sorry."

"It’s fine."

Noah looked toward the academy.

The morning sun illuminated the towers of Valhalla, making the enormous institution appear peaceful.

For once, nobody was chasing them.

Nobody was trying to kill them.

There were no ancient creatures.

No collapsing forests.

No crimson eyes watching from the darkness.

Just classes.

Training.

Squads.

Students.

Normal life.

Noah quietly smiled.

Maybe that was exactly what they needed.

Not another battle.

Not another mystery.

Just time.

Time to breathe.

Time to recover.

And time to become stronger.

Somewhere deep inside him, something stirred.

Noah’s smile disappeared.

The Dead Zone said nothing.

Neither did Noah.

They simply stood there together in silence.

For now, that was enough.
