Chapter 101: Chapter 101: Titan

"The obstacle is the way." — Marcus Aurelius

For seven months, Shadow Orb had been a deadly liability.

It was an erratic, volatile mass of void energy that burned through Riven’s nervous system whenever he pushed its density beyond single digits. Every attempt to force the technique forward had ended with pain, instability, and the constant threat of another catastrophic mana backfire.

But that was before.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the training cavern, Riven sat cross legged on the cold basalt floor, his dark eyes closed in deep meditation. The soft crackling of the campfire filled the chamber, accompanied by the faint sounds of water dripping somewhere deeper within the cave.

Five paces away, Elora sat with her sword laid across her lap.

She watched him silently.

Her presence had become something Riven’s mind had learned to recognize as an anchor. He no longer fought the darkness with the desperate rigidity that had once nearly destroyed him. He breathed slowly and allowed his thoughts to settle.

Nyx rested beside Elora, her large frame curled tightly around the woman’s knee. The wyvern’s luminous violet eyes remained fixed on Riven, her scaled tail twitching slowly in time with his breathing.

Riven raised his right hand.

Focus.

Pulse.

Control.

A marble sized sphere of pure black mana appeared above his palm.

In the past, the sphere would immediately begin humming with unstable energy. Jagged black lightning would crawl across its surface, and the slightest loss of concentration would threaten to trigger a devastating backdraft.

This time, there was nothing.

The sphere simply existed.

Perfectly still.

Riven slowly compressed it.

The orb shrank while becoming denser, feeding on carefully measured threads of mana. The surrounding campfire dimmed as the sphere began swallowing the light around it.

His forehead began to glisten with sweat.

Elora’s voice remained calm.

"Keep your breathing slow. Don’t force the mana to obey. Direct it like a river following a riverbed."

Riven inhaled.

Then slowly exhaled.

The orb contracted further.

The sphere became smaller.

The pressure in the cavern increased.

Frost began spreading across the basalt beneath Riven’s boots.

His fingers trembled.

The sphere continued shrinking.

The orb was now barely larger than a marble.

Yet its density was terrifying.

It no longer appeared to contain energy.

It looked like a hole in reality itself.

Riven maintained his concentration.

There was no pain.

No burning.

No violent feedback.

For the first time, he wasn’t trying to overpower the Shadow Orb.

He was controlling it.

Riven slowly closed his hand.

The sphere dissolved smoothly, returning to his core without producing a shockwave.

Silence filled the cavern.

Riven opened his eyes.

He had gone from barely being able to create the technique to controlling it at a level that would have been impossible only months earlier.

Elora smiled.

"You’re getting there."

Riven looked at his palm.

"I can feel it."

"Feel what?"

"The difference."

He slowly closed his fingers.

"I’m not fighting it anymore."

Elora’s smile softened.

"Good."

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then the ground shook.

Riven’s head snapped upward.

The campfire flickered violently.

Nyx immediately rose to her feet, her wings partially spreading as a deep growl vibrated through her chest.

Another tremor rocked the cavern.

This one was stronger.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Elora stood and grabbed her sword.

"That wasn’t natural."

Riven rose to his feet.

His eyes narrowed.

The warding runes carved into the walls began glowing.

Indigo.

Then brighter.

Then almost white.

Riven’s expression hardened.

"The wards."

A deafening crack split through the cavern.

The ancient concealment barriers surrounding their sanctuary shattered.

The sound was followed by a roar so deep that Riven felt it vibrating inside his bones.

The entire abyss seemed to answer.

Elora’s expression changed instantly.

"Something found us."

A massive shadow moved beyond the cavern entrance.

Stone cracked.

Something enormous dragged itself through the darkness.

Riven slowly drew his sword.

Nyx’s wings spread completely.

Then the creature emerged.

It was enormous.

The monster stood more than thirty feet tall, its body composed of dense gray flesh fused with enormous plates of obsidian bone. Four massive arms hung from its shoulders, each ending in jagged stone structures resembling gigantic pillars.

Its single enormous eye glowed with sickly violet light.

Then its mouth opened.

The inside was completely black.

A swirling mass of corrupted abyssal mana gathered within its throat.

Elora’s grip tightened around her sword.

"It tracked the ward energy."

Riven’s eyes remained fixed on the creature.

"How strong?"

Elora’s expression became grim.

"Too strong for either of us alone."

The Titan roared.

The pressure wave blasted through the cavern.

Nyx immediately launched into the air.

The wyvern released a sharp screech and disappeared into the darkness.

The Titan swung one of its massive arms.

Nyx narrowly avoided the attack, flying around its head and firing several small bursts of void energy into its face.

The attacks barely damaged it.

Elora charged.

Her aura erupted around her in a brilliant silver glow.

She moved faster than Riven had ever seen her move.

Her sword struck the Titan’s wrist.

BOOM.

The impact sent a shockwave through the cavern.

The Titan staggered.

Elora immediately followed with another slash.

Then another.

She wasn’t trying to overpower the creature.

She was redirecting its movements.

Every strike forced the Titan’s enormous body into a slightly different position.

"Riven!"

He understood immediately.

Riven vanished.

Phantom Step.

He reappeared on the Titan’s opposite side and drove his blade into the joint behind one of its knees.

The sword penetrated only a few inches.

The Titan roared.

Its enormous arm swung toward him.

Riven disappeared again.

The stone fist smashed into the ground where he had stood.

The cavern floor exploded.

Riven reappeared behind the creature.

His eyes narrowed.

He needed an opening.

The Titan suddenly turned toward Elora.

Its massive mouth opened.

A vortex of gray abyssal mana began forming inside it.

Elora’s eyes widened.

"Riven!"

The beam erupted.

Elora raised her sword.

Flowing Mirror Stance.

Her entire body shifted.

The incoming beam struck her blade.

Instead of attempting to stop it, she redirected its force.

The beam tore across the cavern wall, carving a massive trench through the basalt.

But the kinetic force still sent Elora flying backward.

She slammed into the cliff face.

"Elora!"

The Titan raised one enormous fist.

Riven’s eyes hardened.

Something inside him became completely still.

No panic.

No hesitation.

No fear.

Only focus.

He remembered the months of darkness.

The countless hunts.

The sleepless nights.

The blood.

The hallucinations.

The moment he had nearly forgotten his own name.

He remembered Elora finding him.

He remembered her voice.

You’re not dying in the dark today.

Riven lowered his stance.

His right hand opened.

The void gathered around his palm.

The air became cold.

The light disappeared.

A sphere of absolute darkness formed above his hand.

This time, there was no instability.

No sparks.

No trembling.

No pain.

The Shadow Orb was perfect.

The system interface appeared.

Riven looked at the Titan.

He vanished.

Phantom Step.

The world blurred.

Riven reappeared directly above the Titan’s shoulder.

The creature never saw him.

He extended his right hand.

The perfected Shadow Orb hovered above his palm.

For a brief moment, everything became silent.

Then Riven drove the sphere directly into the joint between the Titan’s neck and spine.

Fzzzt.

There was no explosion.

No fire.

No massive shockwave.

The Shadow Orb simply expanded inward.

Space around Riven’s hand twisted.

The Titan’s obsidian armor cracked.

Its flesh collapsed.

Its bones disintegrated.

The enormous mana core inside its body shattered.

The thirty foot monster froze.

Its enormous eye dimmed.

Then its entire upper body collapsed inward.

A massive creature that had survived countless ages of darkness simply ceased to exist.

Black dust drifted through the air.

Riven landed on the stone floor panting.

His blade remained in his hand.

He slowly looked toward Elora.

She was still pressed against the cavern wall, breathing heavily.

For several seconds, she simply stared at him.

Nyx descended from above and landed beside Riven, her wings folding against her body.

The wyvern looked at the enormous pile of ash.

Then she released a deep, satisfied rumble.

Elora finally pushed herself away from the wall.

She stared at the remains of the Titan.

Then she looked at Riven.

Her expression slowly changed.

Shock became disbelief.

Then amusement.

"You."

Riven raised an eyebrow.

Elora laughed softly.

"You absolute madman."

Riven extended his hand toward her.

"I told you."

Elora looked at his hand.

Then at his face.

She smiled and took it.

Riven pulled her to her feet.

His grip remained steady.

"We’re both going back to the sky."

Elora looked into his dark eyes.

For the first time since she had fallen into the abyss three years ago, she allowed herself to believe it.

"Yeah."

She tightened her grip around his hand.

"We are."

Behind them, Nyx released another victorious cry.

The sound echoed through the abyss.

For ten months, the darkness had tried to consume them.

Instead, it had forged them into something stronger.

Riven looked toward the distant darkness beyond their ruined sanctuary.

The abyss was still vast.

Still dangerous.

Still filled with monsters far stronger than anything they had encountered.

But for the first time, he no longer saw it as a prison.

He saw it as the final obstacle standing between them and the sky.
