The Extra's Rise: Reincarnated As A Slave
Chapter 71: Queen Aeloria
Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Queen Aeloria
"A monarch does not need to raise her voice to command a room; the true weight of a crown is felt in the silence that follows her step." — Machiavelli
The grand spires of the elven capital rose from the heart of the canopy like towers carved from crystallized moonlight and living wood.
Massive archways draped in glowing vines opened into the Sovereign Hall.
Riven stopped fifty paces from the throne.
His boots clicked softly against the polished marble floor.
The hall was enormous.
Sunlight filtered through a towering ceiling made from emerald glass, casting shifting patterns across the marble. Ancient trees had been incorporated directly into the architecture, their silver bark forming pillars that stretched toward the ceiling.
Everything about the place screamed wealth.
Power.
History.
Riven hated it already.
Beside him, Lyra walked with her head held high.
Despite everything that had happened, she looked more at home here than she ever had on the road.
Then the Queen rose from her throne.
Riven’s attention immediately shifted toward her.
Queen Aeloria was tall and striking.
Her silver blonde hair fell gracefully down her back, almost identical to Lyra’s, while her luminous violet eyes carried the same unmistakable elven heritage.
But where Lyra still possessed the youthful energy of a girl discovering the world outside the royal court, Aeloria possessed something entirely different.
Authority.
The kind that did not need to be announced.
The kind that filled a room simply because she was standing in it.
Her royal clothing shimmered faintly beneath the sunlight filtering through the emerald glass, flowing elegantly around her figure.
Riven’s eyes lingered for half a second longer than they should have.
’She’s beautiful.’
He immediately looked away.
There were probably very few people in the world who could afford to stare at the Queen of the Elves.
Riven was not one of them.
Riven straightened slightly.
’That is the Queen.’
He had faced monsters.
Assassins.
Mercenaries.
High tier adventurers.
He had even stood in front of Garreth when the old swordsman was serious.
But standing in front of a monarch was different.
There was no battlefield here.
No contract.
No obvious enemy.
One wrong move could turn an entire kingdom against him.
Riven lowered his gaze slightly.
’Rule one of survival.’
’Do not antagonize the monarch.’
Lyra reached the throne.
The Queen immediately stepped down from the dais.
"My daughter."
Her voice was soft.
Yet it carried across the entire hall.
Aeloria pulled Lyra into a fierce embrace.
Riven watched quietly.
For the first time since they had entered the capital, Lyra looked her age.
Not a princess.
Not a noble.
Just a daughter returning home.
"When word reached us that your carriage had fallen in the badlands," Aeloria whispered, "the court feared the worst."
Lyra hugged her mother tightly.
"I told you I would return, Mother."
She pulled away and smiled.
Then she turned toward Riven.
"And I wouldn’t have made it back without him."
Aeloria’s eyes followed her daughter’s gaze.
They landed on Riven.
The atmosphere changed.
Instantly.
A pressure settled across the hall.
Riven’s body reacted before his mind did.
His core spun faster.
Mana surged through his body.
His muscles tightened.
The pressure felt like invisible chains pressing against his shoulders.
Nyx raised her head.
A low hiss escaped her throat.
Riven did not move.
He knew what this was.
A test.
The Queen was not attacking him.
She was measuring him.
Seeing whether the human boy standing in front of her would collapse beneath the pressure of her mana.
Riven slowly drew in a breath.
Then another.
His core continued rotating.
He refused to lower his head.
Three seconds passed.
Then the pressure disappeared.
A faint smile appeared on Aeloria’s lips.
"A shadow element."
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
"B plus rank."
Riven remained silent.
"You carry underworld artifacts," she continued. "You smell of blood, ozone, and old contracts."
Her gaze moved toward the obsidian mask covering half his face.
"And you possess enough confidence to stare down a queen without breaking."
Aeloria looked toward Lyra.
"You certainly have a talent for finding unusual people."
Lyra smiled faintly.
Before she could answer, the massive doors behind them slammed open.
"Your Majesty!"
Captain Vaelen marched into the hall.
His silver armor still carried the scratches from his encounter with Riven.
He immediately dropped to one knee.
Then he pointed toward Riven.
"I formally protest the presence of this human assassin within the inner spires!"
His voice echoed through the chamber.
"He bypassed our border protocols by force. He assaulted a royal captain within the forest."
Vaelen’s expression hardened.
"He is a security threat to the entire court."
He lowered his head.
"I request his immediate imprisonment."
A murmur spread through the gathered nobles.
Lyra spun around.
"Vaelen, you arrogant hypocrite. You attacked him first."
"Princess."
"You drew your sword."
"You are allowing a dangerous outsider to manipulate you."
Lyra’s eyes flashed.
"He saved my life."
"Enough."
Aeloria raised one hand.
The entire hall went silent.
Even Lyra stopped speaking.
The Queen descended the remaining steps of the dais.
She approached Riven.
One step.
Then another.
Until she stood just a few feet away.
Up close, the difference between Lyra and her mother was even more obvious.
Lyra carried royal blood.
Aeloria carried the weight of a kingdom.
The Queen’s gaze settled on Riven’s mask.
"Captain Vaelen makes a valid point regarding our laws."
Her voice was calm.
"You have brought violence and blood into a sanctuary protected by the crown."
She tilted her head.
"Tell me, human."
Her violet eyes sharpened.
"Why should I not have my guards throw you into the deep cells?"
Riven stared back.
His hand rested casually near Garreth’s blade.
He could feel every eye in the hall watching him.
Nobles.
Guards.
Mages.
Soldiers.
Everyone waiting to see what he would say.
Riven finally spoke.
His voice came out low and rough.
"Because if I wanted to harm the elves, Captain Vaelen wouldn’t have walked back here on his own two legs."
Silence.
Vaelen’s face twisted with anger.
Riven continued.
"And because your daughter is standing right here."
A collective gasp moved through the hall.
Vaelen immediately rose.
His hand dropped toward his sword.
"You insolent whelp!"
Lyra stepped forward.
"Vaelen."
But the Queen laughed.
It was a short, melodic sound.
The entire room froze.
Aeloria looked at Riven with genuine amusement.
"Bold."
She stepped back.
"Fearless."
Her smile widened slightly.
"And apparently unimpressed by crowns."
Riven shrugged.
He had never been good at dealing with authority.
Aeloria turned toward the throne.
"Very well."
She gestured toward the royal inner spires.
"You delivered my daughter safely home."
Her gaze returned to him.
Riven relaxed slightly.
Then Aeloria added:
"As for your reward..."
Her eyes moved to his mask.
"...and that mask of yours."
Riven’s attention sharpened.
"We will see whether our Royal Mage can accomplish what your underworld healers could not."
For the first time since entering the hall, Riven’s composure cracked slightly.
The Royal Mage.
The thought stayed with him.
The mask had been fused to his face.
He had already accepted that it might never come off.
But now there was another possibility.
Aeloria noticed the subtle change in his expression.
"You are dismissed for the evening."
She turned toward the throne.
"Rest."
Then she looked back.
"Tomorrow, we settle your debt."
Riven nodded.
He glanced toward Lyra.
She smiled.
For the first time since arriving in the capital, Riven felt something unfamiliar.
Hope.
Maybe the mask could actually be removed.
And if it could...
For the first time in years, he might finally see his own face again.
