The False Heir Fell for the Real Crown Prince
Chapter 99: After The Storm
Basil’s breathing grew more uneven. "I shouldn’t have said what I said, okay? I’m so sorry."
Darius’s expression remained cold, unyielding stone as he stared down at him.
"I am not going to repeat myself," he said, the icy edge in his voice sharp enough to draw blood. "Undress this instant."
A full-blown tremor overtook Basil’s body. The last thin wall of his composure shattered, and tears spilled over his lashes, streaming hot and unchecked down his pale cheeks. He collapsed forward onto his knees, sobbing freely, his chest heaving as he buried his face in his hands.
"I’m so sorry," he cried out, his voice choked with raw, agonizing sobs. "Please don’t do this. Please, Darius, don’t do this to me."
He lifted his head, his vision blurred with tears, looking up at Darius with absolute vulnerability.
"What happened between us was not an abomination," he choked out, the admission tearing from his throat amidst his breathless weeping. "It wasn’t. I swear it wasn’t. It was beautiful. It meant everything to me. I was just scared. I was so terrified of what people would say. I was scared of the judgment. I was scared of ruining you. I was scared, Darius. I was so scared. Please, don’t do this. Please don’t do this to me!"
The sudden, devastating sight of Basil breaking down, weeping so pitifully and desperately before him, acted like a bucket of ice water poured over Darius’s fury. His hardened resolve vanished instantly, crumbling into absolute ruin. The dark, terrifying aura around him dissolved, replaced by a wave of sharp, agonizing regret. His eyes widened as the reality of what he was inflicting on Basil slammed into him with brutal force. "Basil..." Darius breathed, his voice instantly softening.
He surged forward without hesitation, climbing onto the bed and gathering Basil into a tight, desperate embrace. He pulled Basil’s trembling body directly against his chest, wrapping his arms around him like a shield, holding him as though he might break apart at any second.
Basil clung to him instantly, his fingers knotting tightly into the fabric of Darius’s shirt, burying his wet face into the crook of Darius’s neck as his shoulders shook with frantic, breathless weeping. "I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Darius. I’m so sorry," Basil kept repeating into his skin, his voice muffled and broken by sobs. "I’m so sorry..."
"Shh, no, listen to me," Darius whispered urgently, his hand cupping the back of Basil’s head and pressing him closer, his own chest aching with a profound, terrifying guilt. "I’m sorry, Basil. I am so sorry. I shouldn’t have treated you that way. I didn’t mean to scare you like that. I swear to you, I didn’t mean to make you think I would ever force you into anything."
Darius held him tighter, rocking him slightly as he tried to absorb the deep tremors running through Basil’s frame. He pressed his lips against the top of Basil’s head, his voice strained with genuine remorse. He had only wanted to shock Basil out of his denial, to force him to stop running, but seeing the genuine terror in Basil’s eyes tore Darius apart from the inside out. He had never intended to harm him. He could never, under any circumstance, truly force or hurt Basil. The thought alone sickened him.
"I would never hurt you, Basil," Darius murmured against his hair, his hand soothingly rubbing circles into Basil’s back as the weeping gradually began to slow. "Never. I was just furious, and I wanted to scare you into seeing how ridiculous it was to call us an abomination. But I would never lay a hand on you like that. Never."
He pulled back just enough to frame Basil’s wet face with both hands, using his thumbs to gently wipe away the tracks of tears from his flushed cheeks. "I just don’t want you hiding from me," Darius said softly, his dark eyes brimming with raw, possessive sincerity. "I don’t want you smothering what we feel beneath fear of the world or debts that don’t exist. There is nothing ruined or wrong about what happened between us. But I am sorry. I went too far, and I am so sorry for making you afraid of me."

Time seemed to pass without either of them noticing. The anger that had filled the room earlier had completely vanished, leaving only the quiet sound of Basil’s uneven breathing and the occasional broken hitch that still escaped his throat. Darius had eventually settled down against the side of the bed, pulling Basil with him until they were both sitting on the mattress, Basil curled against his chest with his arms still wrapped tightly around him. Basil’s body continued to tremble in Darius’s embrace, his breathing catching repeatedly between exhausted sobs, each one reduced to a small, strangled sound that seemed to scrape its way out of his throat. He could barely catch his breath before another shaky sob tore through him, leaving his chest heaving and his entire body trembling against Darius.
Darius simply held him through it. One hand remained firmly wrapped around Basil’s back while the other moved slowly up and down his spine, rubbing soothing circles between his shoulder blades. Every few moments, Darius lowered his head and pressed another gentle kiss against the top of Basil’s hair, lingering there for a moment before whispering softly, "It’s okay. Shh. It’s okay." Then he would kiss his head again, his fingers continuing their slow, reassuring motion over Basil’s back. "It’s okay, Basil. Just breathe. It’s okay. I’m here."
Gradually, the violent trembling began to ease. Basil’s sobs became quieter, his breathing slowly settling into something more even, though occasional shudders still ran through him whenever another lingering wave of emotion caught in his chest. He remained pressed against Darius, too exhausted to move, his face still buried against his shoulder as he tried to regain control of himself. The warmth of Darius’s embrace felt strangely comforting after the storm that had just torn through him, and despite everything that had happened, something inside Basil felt lighter. He had spent the entire three days forcing everything down, carrying his fear, his guilt, his confusion, and the feelings he had desperately tried to deny. Now that he had finally allowed all of it to spill out, his chest no longer felt as painfully tight as it had before.
Darius waited until Basil’s breathing had steadied before gently pulling him back. He kept one hand on Basil’s shoulder, his touch careful as he searched his tear-streaked face. "How are you feeling?" His voice was quiet, devoid of any leftover edge. "Can we talk now?"
Basil swallowed hard and nodded once, his eyes cast downward, unable to bring himself to speak. His throat felt raw from crying, and every attempt to speak would only leave him with nothing but a faint, broken breath. He couldn’t believe he had cried so hard, or that he had broken down so completely in front of Darius.
His cheeks burned with shame as memories of the way he had broken down flooded his mind. Under normal circumstances, the embarrassment would have been unbearable. He would have wanted to disappear rather than let Darius see him so vulnerable. But strangely, he did not have the luxury of dwelling on his embarrassment, for beneath the shame, there was an unfamiliar sense of relief.
He felt lighter, almost as though something unbearably heavy had finally been lifted from his chest. Basil was the kind of person who, under any circumstances, could never bring himself to break down in anyone’s presence. Yet he had collapsed completely in Darius’s presence, and the fact that he had allowed himself to be so vulnerable before him went to show just how much he truly trusted and relied on him.
Darius reached up and gently wiped away one of the remaining tear tracks beneath Basil’s eye. His expression had lost all traces of the cold fury from earlier, replaced by quiet concern. "You do realize you don’t have to be scared of anything when you have me, don’t you?" he asked softly. "Basil, I understand this relationship might be a little complicated because everyone has always assumed we have to behave a certain way as brothers, but that doesn’t mean we have to let those expectations dictate our lives."
Basil swallowed hard, his eyes dropping to the space between them. Darius watched him quietly, his expression softening as he studied the uncertainty written across his face. "We aren’t exactly real siblings to begin with, Basil," he said gently. "We don’t even share the same blood, so there is nothing for you to be scared or ashamed of. What happened between us doesn’t make you a bad person or someone who deserves to be punished. You don’t have to feel guilty for wanting me or start avoiding me just because you’re afraid of what people will say." He gently tilted Basil’s chin upward, encouraging him to meet his eyes. "I don’t care what anyone thinks about us. All I care about is you."
