The Fantastic Little Farmer
Chapter 131: Going to a Safe Place
Chapter 131: Chapter 131: Going to a Safe Place
Ouyang Kunpeng sighed, "Don’t be so extreme. Calm down. Come back, and we’ll talk in person."
Mingruo sneered, "Just keep putting out the fires! Let’s see if your firefighting speed can catch up with my arson! I wouldn’t stoop to something like hiring assassins, but you can keep bending over backwards to protect him!"
"Shut up!" Ouyang Kunpeng couldn’t help but snap in a low voice. "Are you trying to go against the family? Don’t you forget, without the family, you are nothing! All the resources at your disposal belong to the family. I can give them to you, and I can just as easily cut them off!"
"Then let’s wait and see! Tonight, none of you will be getting any sleep!" Ouyang Mingruo then added impatiently, "Is there anything else? Spit it all out at once, and don’t call my phone again!"
Fearing she would hang up, Ouyang Kunpeng softened his tone. "Listen to me, Mingruo. Come back and confront him face to face! If he really orchestrated this, I will break his legs right in front of you!"
"And then what?" Mingruo was deeply disappointed. She had nearly died time and time again, only to receive her father’s promise to "break his legs." When the time came, they would probably just gloss over it with a casual apology. If she didn’t nail Ouyang Chunqiu to the wall this time, would he let her off the hook once he recovered? Not only her, but the assistants who had helped her, Zhang Yun, and even her mother could be implicated! A venomous snake had to be beaten to death in a single strike!
"Even a vicious tiger won’t eat its cubs. Don’t think so poorly of your dad. No matter what, I would never move against you. Let’s all sit down and talk this out calmly and rationally!"
Ouyang Mingruo smiled. What a great line about a tiger not eating its cubs! He was already laying the groundwork! When the time came, he could use this exact phrase to let Ouyang Chunqiu off the hook.
"Fine! I will go back Ming Tian, and we will have a calm, rational talk! That’s it!"
Ming Tian? Naturally, that would only happen after tonight’s battle was fought and Ouyang Chunqiu was sent to prison.
"What do you think?" Ouyang Mingruo let out a breath and asked Zhang Yun.
"This matter won’t drag on until Ming Tian. The winds are already gathering, and soon there will be a torrential storm. Although I don’t know your dad well, it’s obvious he is a man who strikes with the force of a thunderbolt..."
Mingruo smiled bitterly. "Can you stop using idioms? Just be simple and direct!"
Zhang Yun said, "They were able to track our route and arrange people at the service area, so they will definitely have people stationed at the highway exit too. That will be the first battle where swords are actually crossed!"
Mingruo nodded. "I considered that. I’ve also arranged for people to wait for us at the highway exit. He can’t possibly bring dozens of men."
"..." Zhang Yun smiled. "Spoken like a true domineering CEO! I thought I was seeing things clearly as an outsider, but it turns out you had it all arranged long ago."
"What else?"
"I can’t think of anything else." Zhang Yun was completely relieved and deliberately laughed in an exaggerated manner. "You use your brain, and I’ll use my brawn! Just like I said before, I am the knight protecting your safety. When it comes to war, the queen must lead the charge herself!"
Ouyang Mingruo fell silent for a moment. "Right now, you are the person I trust the most. I won’t spout empty promises about treating you well, nor will I say thank you for such a massive favor. We still have a long road ahead!"
Afraid she would bring up something about him becoming a live-in son-in-law again, Zhang Yun immediately changed the subject. "I’ll focus on driving, you focus on your war."
"Alright!"
Ouyang Mingruo truly didn’t dare to be careless. Ouyang Kunpeng was currently putting out fires with targeted precision, using the family’s resources against her. She had to be cautious.
Zhang Yun followed the navigation, maintaining a high level of vigilance as they drove along the ramp toward the highway exit. Ouyang Chunqiu’s side could have potentially gotten on the highway earlier from another location, or there might have been other people at that service area. They could have easily overtaken them on the road and waited here, ready to ram them off the road once again...
Thinking of this, Zhang Yun felt a lingering fear. When they had parked in the emergency lane earlier, he hadn’t thought of this layer at all. If someone had really chased them in a car, their hazard lights would have made them a glaring target! If a car had rammed into them while Ouyang Mingruo was crying and hugging him, they would have been sent flying instantly. Without seatbelts, even if they didn’t die, they would have been severely injured. This prompted Zhang Yun to slow down and double his caution, safely passing through the highway exit.
"We’re switching cars!" Ouyang Mingruo pointed to the vehicles flashing their lights by the side of the road ahead.
Zhang Yun drove over and stopped. He saw three cars, which appeared to be the backup Ouyang Mingruo had called in. As soon as they parked, several men got out and surrounded their car, forming a protective perimeter.
"Miss Mingruo."
"Uncle Zhong, take care of the car," Ouyang Mingruo gave the instruction as she got out of the car with Zhang Yun.
"Yes, ma’am!" Uncle Zhong waved his hand, signaling his subordinates to drive the car away. He led the two of them to the middle vehicle, and the convoy set off, sandwiching them defensively.
"We’ll go to a safe place first to get your wounds treated, and then we’ll wait for news," Ouyang Mingruo explained simply. Her family’s network of relationships was far too complex, so she didn’t waste her breath trying to explain the specifics.
These men were clearly professionals. They formed a defensive matrix, eliminating any fear of being ambushed or rammed. Sitting in the backseat with her, Zhang Yun could finally rest his mind and relax a little.
"Miss Mingruo, would you like some water? We have room temperature and ice water."
"Focus on driving, I’ll get it myself." Ouyang Mingruo opened the small car refrigerator. "How about you?"
Zhang Yun guessed she wanted ice water to suppress her anger. "Either is fine with me."
Mingruo took out a bottle of iced mineral water, twisted the cap off for him, and handed it to Zhang Yun. She then opened another bottle for herself and chugged more than half of it in one breath. The icy mineral water went down, allowing her to let out a long breath. It was as if her entire being had been refreshed and invigorated.
Zhang Yun hadn’t had anything to eat or drink at the service area, and having lost some blood, he was also thirsty. He finished his entire bottle in a single gulp. It came in a glass bottle with high-end packaging and foreign text he didn’t recognize. He figured it was some imported premium mineral water.
"Do you want to rest for a bit?" Mingruo asked softly.
Zhang Yun had been driving since the afternoon and had just been injured, so he was genuinely a bit tired. With his current physical stamina, it was nothing he couldn’t handle. However, the driver was a stranger, so it wasn’t convenient to chat freely, and Mingruo still needed to plan her next moves. He nodded, leaned back, and closed his eyes to rest.
Ouyang Chunqiu couldn’t win in a head-on clash, which was why he resorted to such underhanded tactics. The car crash was at least meant to look like an accident, but back at the service area, all pretenses had been dropped—it was both an attack and a kidnapping attempt. He wondered, "If it were me, and my plans were foiled one after another, what would I do next?"
Zhang Yun sorted through the situation in his mind. He didn’t need to know more of their inside information; purely from the perspective of human nature, he could roughly analyze what was going on. Judging from how they were tracked, there was likely a mole on Ouyang Mingruo’s side! In that case, even though they had switched cars, their destination might not be safe either. If Ouyang Chunqiu’s side knew about it in advance, they would definitely lay out traps! And then there was Ouyang Kunpeng! The capabilities and resources of this big boss were definitely far superior to Ouyang Mingruo’s. Even if he didn’t personally enter the fray, suppressing this whole ordeal wouldn’t be difficult for him!
Zhang Yun had now captured three guns. If it came down to close-quarters, head-on combat, he wasn’t afraid of anyone. With his current heightened senses and bodily control, even without prior Experience in handling guns, he was confident in his aim and wouldn’t waste a single bullet.
As he continued to think... this careless guy actually fell asleep right then and there! It wasn’t until the car came to a halt that he was startled awake.
They had arrived? What safe place was this?
