The First Outlier: Primordial Fracture

Chapter 153: The Near Turns Dangerous

The pale doorway at the end of the chamber stood ten paces away until Kael looked directly at it. The distance widened without any floor plate moving.

Jaro rubbed his tired eyes. "I can see the doorway, but every time I count the steps, the answer changes."

Vaela held her wrapped blade across the entrance. Its tip appeared longer than the weapon itself when she pointed toward the far wall. "The space between the blade and that wall is stretching. Find the cord or organ doing it before anyone walks into the doorway."

The boy with the bowl looked ahead. The doorway remained close for him.

Kael stepped beside the child, and thin clear cords appeared across the chamber. White knots hung along them, each one no larger than a finger joint. One cord ran from Kael’s chest toward the doorway, while others stretched toward Vaela, Orrek, Renn, Jaro, and the bowl boy.

The first cord tightened.

TWANG!

The doorway moved farther away. A second cord pulled between Jaro and the child, opening a handspan of empty air even though their shoulders had been touching.

Vaela placed the blade against the nearest cord. The metal stopped short as the space around its tip lengthened. "The cords widen any gap we try to cross. Break the knots or their anchors instead of reaching for the doorway."

Renn rolled a chain link tied to cloth across the floor. It appeared near the doorway while the cloth barely left his hand.

"The floor has not grown longer," he said. "The cord only makes the link look farther away."

Vaela pulled it back. "Use floor cracks to judge distance, and move only after Kael exposes an anchor."

Jaro moved the boy behind a broken rib. "We stay here. This room already has enough ways to use what we want against us."

Kael closed one hand around a white knot. It slid away while the clear cord remained against his palm.

He stepped after it. His boot landed on stone, but the next pace stretched beneath him until his injured heel pulled against Vaela’s binding.

More cords turned toward his wounds. One fastened near the punctures in his shoulder, and another pulled at the branch marks running from his palm toward his chest.

The Sovereign Root opened under the hostile force. Kael chose four exact attributes to keep the cords from using his injuries as anchors and to carry his body across the widening gaps.

Core Mass Density. Velocity Movement Authority. Regenerative Dominion. Primordial Marrow Layer.

Kael’s weight settled through his legs until the stone sagged beneath both feet. Primordial Marrow Layer gave his wounded frame a deeper brace, while Regenerative Dominion tightened the cuts around his heel and palm. Velocity Movement Authority revealed the instant each cord began to lengthen the next step.

He caught the white knot again and pulled before it could slide away.

RIP!

The clear cord split from end to end. Fluid poured from it and rose toward the ceiling, revealing a pale sac buried behind the left wall.

The doorway jerked closer.

Every remaining cord tightened at once. One wrapped around Orrek’s bound shoulder and pulled him away from the survivors using his back for cover. Another caught Renn’s count cloth, drawing his hand away from the nearest knot. Vaela’s blade stopped a finger’s width from the seam she had found.

Orrek braced his free hand against the floor. The ash-lipped woman reached for his chain, but the gap widened.

"Use Sova instead of the chain," Orrek said. "The cord is waiting for you to reach toward me."

Sova pulled the woman behind a wall rib. Orrek remained in the gap, holding the cord away from his throat.

Renn’s cloth stretched until its knots blurred. He tried to follow and nearly stepped into another cord.

Vaela caught the back of his coat. "Leave the cloth where it is. You still know where the people are, and the cord cannot change their answers."

Renn called the first three names instead. Each person answered, and the cord around the cloth loosened.

Vaela turned her blade sideways and struck a white knot near her wrist.

CLACK!

The knot cracked. Her blade reached the wall, and she cut through the cord feeding Orrek’s shoulder.

SNAP!

The closing gap dropped Orrek into Sova and the ash-lipped woman’s arms.

Three cords surrounded Jaro and the boy. The child reached for him, but the space between their hands widened with every effort.

"I cannot reach you," the boy said. His voice broke as the bowl slipped against his chest.

Jaro lunged and struck an invisible barrier between them.

THUD!

He fell to one knee, pushed himself up with his wrapped hand, and tried again. "Keep the bowl against your body. I am still beside you, even if this room has decided to be difficult."

The child extended his hand once more. An inch remained between their fingers.

Kael drove his heel into the floor where the cord crossed beneath them.

BOOM!

A crack ran through the stone and struck the hidden anchor. The clear line snapped, and the stretched inch closed so quickly that Jaro’s hand slammed into the boy’s shoulder.

Jaro held him until the child stopped shaking. "I have you. The bowl is safe, and you are safer."

Renn touched two knots on the count cloth as the space around his wrist returned. "I can reach both of you again. Stay together while I check the others."

Vaela cut the cord holding her blade.

SNAP!

The broken line sprayed clear fluid over the wall, outlining three more pale sacs beneath the stone. Each one inflated when a survivor tried to reach another person.

"The sacs are pulling the cords," Vaela said. "Break them, and the chamber cannot widen the gaps."

Kael crossed before the nearest sac could drag itself deeper. His shoulder struck the wall.

CRACK!

Stone collapsed around the pale tissue. The sac burst against his chest, releasing fluid and tiny white bones. Every cord connected to it sagged.

Orrek tore free and moved the chain to his waist. A second sac swelled beside him when he reached toward the ash-lipped woman.

"I can feel it behind this section," he said. "Keep everyone clear of my left side."

He wrapped the chain around a wall rib and pulled from his hips. The stone split enough for Vaela to drive her blade into the exposed sac.

SPLAT!

The cords around three survivors fell loose. Orrek stumbled when the resistance vanished, and Sova caught him before his injured shoulder struck the floor.

Kael broke the next anchors with his fist, elbow, and knee. Each destroyed sac returned a piece of stolen distance too quickly. One man collided with a wall that had appeared farther away, while two women struck hands because they reached harder than the restored gap required.

Renn used those impacts to rebuild the line. "Touch the person beside you before moving. Use a wrist or sleeve, and wait for an answer before reaching farther."

The count travelled through small contacts. Sova squeezed Orrek’s forearm. Vaela laid the flat of her blade beside the boy’s boot. Jaro kept one hand on the child’s shoulder without taking the bowl.

One final cord remained between the survivors and the doorway. It pulled Kael’s shoulder wound toward a sac hidden above the threshold.

He seized the cord and dragged it across the floor. The line stretched, but his grip held until the pale sac tore partly through the stone.

Kael swung the knot into its own anchor.

CRASH!

The sac burst. Clear fluid covered the doorway, and the last stretched gaps returned to their proper size.

Vaela checked the formation before allowing anyone forward. The sudden changes had bruised shoulders and knuckles, but no person had disappeared into the widened space.

Renn counted through touch and voice. "All twenty-one are here. I can reach every person without the chamber changing the distance."

The doorway now stood close enough to enter. Black nails unfolded around its pale frame, each fitted with a clear eye like the ones from the shifting corridor.

Kael crossed first and pressed one hand against the doorway. The floor remained the same length beneath him.

Vaela sent the survivors in pairs. Renn checked each wrist against the cloth, Orrek watched the wall sacs, and Jaro kept his wrapped hand on the boy’s shoulder.

The bruised man moved last with Sova. Vaela bound his swelling shoulder before he crossed.

"The bone is still in place," she told him. "Keep the arm close and let Sova take your weight if the floor changes again."

He nodded and completed the crossing without looking toward the dead sacs.

Vaela studied them from outside their reach. "Each nail turned when another pair crossed. The frame is waiting for all twenty-one of us to face it."

Kael waited until the last drop of clear fluid fell from the ceiling.

DRIP!

It struck the stone instead of rising again. Several survivors released the breath they had been holding.

Jaro kept his hand on the boy’s shoulder. "The floor is where it belongs, the doorway has stopped running, and I would still prefer not to trust either of them."

Vaela watched the black nails unfold. "The nails shifted when Jaro touched the boy. Hold the line here. I want to see which one flashes first."

The pale frame opened without doors. Every black nail turned toward Kael. Behind the wall, a chain ratcheted once, and the threshold tightened around his waiting hand.
