The First Outlier: Primordial Fracture
Chapter 163: Roof Hunger
Rows of pale eyes hung from the next chamber’s ceiling on black tendons. Tiny hooks held every lid open, and each pinhole pupil followed Renn as the floor sloped toward a basin filled with bone dust and gnawed iron nails.
Renn stopped breathing when the eyes found the count cloth in his hands. Kael stepped between him and the ceiling, but the pupils kept tracking Renn’s throat.
The tendons tightened. Renn’s count cloth lifted from his hand as if the air wanted to taste it. Twenty-one knots dragged upward. He clutched it with both hands and made a sound through his teeth.
Orrek caught the back of Renn’s coat and pulled him down before the cloth left his fingers. His ruined shoulder shook with the effort. "You will have to take more than a boy and a piece of cloth."
The eyes widened, and a pale thread dropped onto Orrek’s wrist.
The skin under it went gray. Vaela cut the thread before its hooks buried themselves.
SLICE!
The severed end bled white fluid that smelled of sour milk. Jaro swallowed. "I think the ceiling wants whatever Renn wrote on that cloth."
Vaela watched the eyes turn with Renn’s hand. "It wants the person who remembers what happened here. Keep him below the hooks."
She pressed two fingers against the gray patch on Orrek’s wrist. The color receded slowly, but his hand kept trembling after the thread was gone. "Those lines drain more than blood, so cover your skin and do not let one stay attached long enough to reach the bone."
Orrek wrapped his sleeve around the wrist. "I was hoping the ceiling had merely developed poor manners."
Renn tried to count. "Four..."
His voice thinned until no sound remained. The ceiling did not need to kill Renn if it could take his count and leave twenty-one frightened people unable to prove who had vanished.
Kael committed one shard each to Threat Perception Instinct, Regenerative Dominion, Metaphysical Resistance, and Mind Soul Anchor. He needed to find the hidden mouths, keep his damaged body moving, and hold the number twenty-one where the ceiling could not reach it.

====================================================================
Threat Perception Instinct revealed small mouths behind the eyes, while Regenerative Dominion tightened damaged tissue around Kael’s throat and ribs. Metaphysical Resistance resisted the pull on his memory, and Mind Soul Anchor fixed the number twenty-one inside him.
The change did not heal his calf or clear his exhaustion. It revealed mouths breathing through the tendons, threads carrying stolen sensation into the basin, and every pull against Renn’s twenty-one knots.
Kael jumped through the pain in his calf and caught the nearest tendon. Every eye on that row rolled toward his hand.
Kael pulled.
RIP!
A whole row tore free and burst under his boots, spraying white fluid through the bone dust. Renn forced his damaged voice past the pull.
"One row broken."
The survivors followed Renn’s gesture instead of staring upward. Sova drew the smallest boy against the stone rib, while the burned-scalp woman pulled an injured worker beneath cover.
The remaining eyes whipped toward him. Kael threw the torn tendon upward like a chain and wrapped it around another cluster. He yanked.
CRUNCH!
Hooks snapped, and a knot of staring eyes fell from the ceiling.
Orrek dragged the survivors under a slanted rib of black stone and used his forearm to shield them from the falling threads. Three lines touched him and turned the skin gray, but he caught them in his bare hand and dragged them within Kael’s reach. Sova braced both hands against his belt when his injured shoulder started to fold, allowing him to keep the threads away from the people behind them.
"I cannot hold all three much longer, so take them before they reach the others."
Kael did. He wrapped them around his fist and punched the floor.
BOOM!
The threads snapped tight, tearing five eyes into the bone-dust basin. The stone cracked and released a cloud that turned red around Kael’s blood.
WHEEZE!
The sound came from the ceiling as hidden mouths lost air. Vaela moved beneath them and cut three tendons reaching for Renn.
SLICE! SLICE! SLICE!
Jaro threw a handful of gnawed nails at the ceiling. Most missed, but one struck an eye in the pupil.
POP!
He stared at his hand, surprised that the throw had worked. "Oh, I actually hit one."
Vaela ducked beneath another tendon and pointed her bloody blade toward his boots. "You have more nails down there, and those eyes are still open."
Renn held the count cloth with both hands. His lips were gray. The chamber had taken something from his voice, not all, but enough to make each word expensive.
Kael landed on his injured leg, and pain burned through his thigh. He drove both hands into the crack around the basin, splitting his nails as he pulled against the roots beneath it.
CRACK!
The basin lifted one inch, and the chamber convulsed. Threads cut hot lines across Kael’s back while he kept pulling.
CRACK!
The basin tore free, revealing a round, lipless mouth where solid stone should have been. Gnawed iron nails formed its teeth, and it snapped at Renn’s next breath before Kael shoved the basin into its jaws.
CRUSH!
Teeth and nail fragments burst upward as the mouth shattered its jaw around the basin. Renn saw the damage and straightened.
Vaela kicked one rolling tooth away from the survivors. Its black surface carried several scratched names, each worn almost smooth by the mouth that had chewed it. The basin had not been holding ordinary debris; it was where the chamber ground down whatever record its victims left behind.
Renn’s voice came back rougher than before.
"Twenty-one."
The chamber lunged for the word. Kael stomped on the broken mouth.
SPLIT!
The word stayed, and all twenty-one survivors answered with a breath. The remaining eyes stopped reaching for Renn alone. One worker forgot which tendon he had pointed at, the boy lost sight of the crack in the basin, and Orrek’s memory of the last pull began to blur.
Vaela drove her blade into the floor beside the broken mouth and twisted.
SCRAPE!
A ring of pale rootlets surfaced around the hole, each tied to someone’s line of sight. Kael grabbed a handful and pulled.
The nearest worker screamed when a white line pulled from his shadow. Kael released the roots before they tore through the man’s leg, and Vaela cursed. "Each root is tied to someone who saw the room. We cannot rip them out one at a time."
Renn wiped blood from his lips. "We pull together, and every one of us watches what Kael breaks." He passed the cloth onward until all twenty-one held some part of it. Harn managed only two fingers, so Sella closed her hand over his without taking his place. The smallest boy gripped one knot in both fists.
Renn inhaled.
"Keep your eyes on what he breaks, even when it hurts," Renn said, "and I will hold the count for as long as my voice lasts."
Jaro lifted another handful of nails. "I will watch, but I reserve the right to complain afterward."
Kael moved when Renn reached one and slammed his fist into the rootlets.
BANG!
Twenty-one people watched the impact, and the chamber choked while trying to pull sight from all of them. By seven, Kael held the exposed knot. By fourteen, his palms bled into it. By twenty, it tore free.
RIP!
Every remaining eye snapped open. Renn kept counting. Ten.
Kael swung the root knot overhead and smashed it into the ceiling.
BOOM!
Eyes burst and rained burning fluid, but every hand held the cloth. At twenty-one, Vaela cut the last tendon feeding the mouth.
Jaro, pale and shaking, lifted the cracked bowl so the boy could use its dented reflection. "The bowl is ugly, but the reflection still works. Keep looking until Renn finishes."
Twenty-one.
At twenty-one, the root knot collapsed into white ash veined with red. The remaining lids closed as Kael looked toward the nearest open eye, but he saved his strength instead of chasing it.
The workers moved beneath the closed eyes while the count cloth still passed between them. Burns covered their skin, and Renn could barely speak, but each person checked the hand beside theirs before taking another step. At the exit, one final thread lowered toward the cloth, and Renn did not call for Kael.
He wrapped the cloth around his fist, stepped forward, and let the thread touch his knuckles. It tried to drink the witness from his hand. Orrek moved to stop it, but he shook his head once.
"I saw what happened in this room, and I still see it," he said.
The thread smoked against Renn’s skin and recoiled. Orrek caught him under one arm and held him there while the boy coughed.
"You scared me," Orrek said. "I thought it had taken your voice before I could reach you."
Renn leaned against his side until his legs stopped shaking. "I thought it might, but I needed to know whether the cloth would hold. I should have asked you to stay close."
Orrek adjusted his grip carefully around the injured shoulder. "I can manage close, so give me the chance next time."
Renn wrapped the bloodstained cloth twice around his wrist and walked beneath the closed eyes. His throat hurt worse after defying the thread, but he knew what had tried to take his voice, and he carried that memory into the next room with Orrek beside him.
At the threshold, something black moved beneath the old cut on Kael’s forearm.
