Chapter 69 - Sixty-Seven: The Memory That Should Not Exist
Chapter 69: Chapter Sixty-Seven: The Memory That Should Not Exist
Lumi.
The voice echoed through the Golden Space.
Lin Yue froze.
Shen Rui immediately stepped closer.
Lumi—
didn’t move.
Her tiny body flickered like a candle caught in a storm.
"Lumi?"
No answer.
The voice came again.
YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO REMEMBER.
The World-Tree trembled.
Its leaves turned silver.
Then—
one by one—
they began falling.
Lin Yue looked around.
"What is happening?"
Lumi finally spoke.
"We have to leave."
"Leave where?"
"Anywhere."
"Why?"
Lumi looked at her.
"Because it found us."
The Golden Space Trembles
The entire pocket dimension shook.
Fields rippled.
Water splashed over the banks.
The newly planted seeds trembled beneath the soil.
Even the World-Tree’s roots pulled away from the edges of the space.
Lin Yue grabbed the nearest support beam.
"Lumi!"
"I don’t know how much time we have."
"For what?"
"For it to enter."
Shen Rui’s voice became serious.
"What is it?"
Lumi shook her head.
"I don’t know."
"You said you knew the Hunger."
"I did."
"Then what is this?"
Lumi stared at the darkness beneath the World-Tree.
"Something older."
The Hidden Door
A crack appeared beneath the tree.
Lin Yue stared.
"That wasn’t there before."
"No."
Lumi looked terrified.
"It has been sealed for a very long time."
"By whom?"
Lumi whispered:
"By me."
Lin Yue frowned.
"You sealed a door inside your own memory?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I was afraid of what was behind it."
Lin Yue took a slow breath.
"Then we’re opening it."
Shen Rui looked at her.
"Are you sure?"
"No."
She smiled.
"But apparently that’s becoming a tradition."
Beneath the World-Tree
The three of them descended.
The roots formed a natural staircase.
With every step—
the Golden Space became darker.
The farmland disappeared.
The streams disappeared.
The warm golden light faded.
Until—
only Lumi’s small glow remained.
Lin Yue looked around.
"This doesn’t feel like the Golden Space."
Lumi shook her head.
"It isn’t."
"What is it?"
"My memory."
Lumi’s First Memory
They reached a stone chamber.
At its center stood a small girl.
Not Lumi.
A human girl.
She was surrounded by enormous machines.
Lin Yue stared.
"Who is that?"
Lumi looked at the image.
"That was me."
Lin Yue turned.
"You?"
"Before."
Shen Rui studied the projection.
The girl looked about ten years old.
She wore a simple white robe.
Golden symbols covered her arms.
Behind her—
scientists worked around a massive crystal.
Lin Yue recognized it.
"The Golden Core."
Lumi nodded.
"They called me LUMA."
Lin Yue blinked.
"LUMA?"
"Life Utility Memory Architecture."
Shen Rui raised an eyebrow.
"You were a machine?"
Lumi looked down.
"Partly."
The First Golden Space
The memory changed.
The scientists placed seeds inside the crystal.
Then animals.
Then water.
Then samples of soil.
Then books.
Thousands of books.
Millions of pages.
The crystal absorbed everything.
Lin Yue understood.
"You weren’t created to control resources."
"No."
"You were created to preserve them."
"Yes."
Lumi’s voice became softer.
"They knew their civilization was collapsing."
The image changed.
Cities burned.
Rivers dried.
Fields failed.
People fought.
The Hunger grew.
The scientists began transferring knowledge into the Golden Core.
Everything they could save.
Agriculture.
Medicine.
Engineering.
Ecology.
History.
Languages.
Genetics.
Architecture.
Even memories.
Lin Yue whispered:
"They built an ark."
Lumi nodded.
"A living ark."
The Girl Inside
The memory showed the young Lumi sitting beside the crystal.
A scientist knelt before her.
"Do you understand your purpose?"
Young Lumi nodded.
"To remember."
"And?"
"To protect."
"And?"
"To help life continue."
The scientist smiled.
"Good."
Then he placed his hand on her head.
"You must never forget."
The memory flickered.
Lin Yue frowned.
"Then why did you forget?"
Lumi didn’t answer.
The image changed.
The Hunger Arrives
The laboratory doors exploded.
Black mist entered.
People screamed.
Machines failed.
The Golden Core began overheating.
The scientists tried to shut it down.
But the Hunger had already reached them.
One scientist shouted:
"Seal LUMA!"
Another:
"We don’t have time!"
The young Lumi stood beside the Core.
She was crying.
"What should I do?"
The lead scientist looked at her.
Then—
he said something Lin Yue couldn’t hear.
The memory broke apart.
Lin Yue stared.
"What did he tell you?"
Lumi shook.
"I don’t remember."
"But you just showed us."
"That’s not a memory."
"What?"
"A reconstruction."
Lin Yue frowned.
"Then where is the real memory?"
Lumi pointed deeper into the chamber.
"Behind that door."
The Black Door
At the end of the chamber stood a door.
It was unlike anything Lin Yue had seen before.
Not gold.
Not silver.
Black.
Completely black.
No handle.
No lock.
Only one symbol.
A circle surrounding a tiny white flame.
Lumi approached it.
The symbol brightened.
Then—
the voice returned.
LUMA.
Lumi froze.
Lin Yue stepped in front of her.
"Who are you?"
Silence.
Then:
THE ONE WHO REMEMBERS YOU.
Lin Yue frowned.
"Show yourself."
The door opened.
The Forgotten Laboratory
Beyond the door was another laboratory.
But this one was untouched.
No dust.
No decay.
No damage.
Machines still operated.
Lights still glowed.
A central chamber contained—
a woman.
She appeared human.
Long silver hair.
Pale skin.
Eyes closed.
Connected to hundreds of golden cables.
Lumi stared.
"No."
Lin Yue whispered:
"Who is she?"
Lumi answered:
"My creator."
The woman opened her eyes.
They were the same color as Lumi’s.
The Creator
The woman smiled.
"Hello, LUMA."
Lumi backed away.
"You’re dead."
"I was."
"You shouldn’t exist."
"Neither should you."
Lin Yue stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The woman looked at her.
"My name is Li Eliane."
She paused.
"I was the final Keeper of the Golden Core."
Lin Yue frowned.
"You created Lumi?"
"I helped create her."
"What happened?"
Li Eliane’s expression changed.
"The Hunger won."
The Missing Memory
Lin Yue looked at Lumi.
"What did you forget?"
Li Eliane answered.
"Everything that happened afterward."
Lumi’s glow weakened.
"Why?"
"Because you asked me to."
Lumi stared.
"I did?"
Li Eliane nodded.
"You knew the Hunger would use your memories to find the Golden Space."
Lin Yue understood.
"So Lumi erased herself."
"Yes."
"To protect everyone."
"Yes."
Lin Yue looked at Lumi.
"And you forgot who you were."
Lumi nodded.
"I forgot everything."
The Last Order
Li Eliane stood.
Her body flickered.
She wasn’t truly alive.
She was a preserved consciousness.
A memory housed inside the Golden Core.
"The civilization collapsed," she said.
"But LUMA survived."
"How?"
"She escaped."
"Where?"
Li Eliane looked toward Lumi.
"Into the Golden Space."
Lin Yue stared.
"You carried the entire archive with you."
Lumi nodded.
"All of it."
"Then why didn’t you remember?"
"Because remembering everything would have exposed us."
Li Eliane smiled sadly.
"So we divided the memory."
Lin Yue frowned.
"Divided?"
"LUMA kept the living memory."
She pointed toward Lumi.
"The Golden Space kept the knowledge."
Then—
the World-Tree appeared behind them.
"And the World-Tree kept the history."
Lin Yue looked upward.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The Golden Space.
The World-Tree.
Lumi.
They were not three separate things.
They were three parts of the same ark.
The Missing Fourth Part
Lin Yue looked around.
"If those are the three parts..."
She stopped.
"There should be a fourth."
Li Eliane nodded.
"There is."
"What is it?"
"The future."
Lin Yue frowned.
"That doesn’t make sense."
"It does."
Li Eliane pointed toward the door.
"Knowledge preserves the past."
She pointed toward Lumi.
"Memory preserves experience."
She pointed toward the Golden Space.
"Life preserves the present."
Then she looked at Lin Yue.
"But someone must decide what happens next."
Lin Yue slowly understood.
"The Keeper."
Li Eliane smiled.
"Yes."
Why Lin Yue?
Lin Yue stared at her.
"Why me?"
Li Eliane didn’t answer immediately.
Instead—
she asked:
"What would you do if you had unlimited power?"
Lin Yue thought.
"Limit it."
Li Eliane smiled.
"What would you do if you had unlimited resources?"
"Distribute them carefully."
"What would you do if you could eliminate every hardship?"
"Ask whether the solution creates a bigger problem."
Li Eliane’s smile widened.
"And if you could create a perfect world?"
Lin Yue answered immediately.
"I wouldn’t."
"Why?"
"Because perfect systems don’t leave room for people to change them."
Li Eliane nodded.
"That is why."
The Real Meaning of the Golden Space
Lin Yue looked around.
"So the Golden Space wasn’t meant to make one person rich."
"No."
"Or powerful."
"No."
"It was meant to give humanity another chance."
"Yes."
"And the Keeper’s job isn’t to control the world."
"No."
"To help people become capable of controlling their own future."
Li Eliane smiled.
"Now you understand."
The Hunger’s True Nature
Lin Yue’s expression hardened.
"But there’s still one problem."
"The Hunger."
"Yes."
Li Eliane nodded.
"The Hunger is not simply a monster."
"We know."
"It is a system."
Lin Yue looked at the black door.
"A system designed to eliminate scarcity."
"Yes."
"And it became dependent on consumption."
"Yes."
"So why hasn’t it disappeared?"
Li Eliane answered:
"Because humanity still fears scarcity."
Lin Yue nodded slowly.
"Then the Hunger survives wherever people believe there will never be enough."
"Yes."
"Which means..."
She looked toward the World-Tree.
"We can’t destroy it."
"No."
"We have to make people resilient enough that scarcity doesn’t control them."
Li Eliane smiled.
"Exactly."
The Final Archive
Li Eliane opened a hidden compartment.
Inside was a small seed.
Lin Yue stared.
It looked ordinary.
"What is that?"
"The first seed."
Lin Yue frowned.
"Xing Tera gave me one."
Li Eliane smiled.
"Then you have already found the second."
"Second?"
"There were three."
Lin Yue stared.
"Three?"
"One remained here."
"One was given to Asterra."
"And the third?"
Li Eliane looked at Lumi.
"LUMA carries it."
Lumi’s eyes widened.
"Where?"
Li Eliane touched her chest.
"Inside you."
The Seed of Memory
Lumi began glowing.
A tiny green seed appeared inside her light.
Lin Yue stared.
"That seed contains what?"
"Not crops."
"Then?"
"Memory."
"Whose?"
Li Eliane answered:
"Everyone who lived before the collapse."
Lin Yue stepped back.
"That means..."
Lumi nodded.
"If I awaken it completely..."
"You’ll remember everything."
Lumi looked frightened.
"Everything."
The battles.
The collapse.
The people.
The Hunger.
The end.
Every memory.
Every death.
Every mistake.
Every failure.
Lin Yue looked at her.
"You don’t have to."
Lumi looked surprised.
"What?"
"You don’t have to remember everything just because you can."
Li Eliane smiled.
"That answer is why she chose you."
The Choice
Lumi looked at the seed.
Then at Lin Yue.
"What should I do?"
Lin Yue shook her head.
"I can’t decide for you."
"But you’re the Keeper."
"That doesn’t mean I own you."
Lumi’s eyes brightened.
Lin Yue continued:
"You’ve spent your entire existence protecting everyone else."
She smiled.
"For once, choose something for yourself."
Lumi stared at the seed.
Then—
she touched it.
The seed disappeared.
A wave of light passed through the chamber.
Lumi screamed.
Lin Yue immediately reached for her.
"Lumi!"
Images flooded the room.
Millions of lives.
Ancient cities.
Forests.
Farms.
Children.
Scientists.
Farmers.
Builders.
Families.
The first Keeper.
The first Golden Space.
The birth of the Hunger.
The collapse.
The escape.
The silence.
Then—
a final image.
A young girl standing before the Golden Core.
LUMA.
She looked directly at Lin Yue.
And said:
"If someone finds this memory, tell them we were not trying to become gods. We were trying to survive."
The Final Memory
The image changed again.
The young LUMA was standing with Li Eliane.
Behind them—
the entire civilization was collapsing.
Li Eliane handed LUMA a small glowing seed.
"Take this."
"What is it?"
"Our last lesson."
"What lesson?"
Li Eliane smiled.
"Nothing survives alone."
Then she pushed LUMA into the Golden Space.
The door closed.
The world disappeared.
Lumi opened her eyes.
Tears floated around her like tiny stars.
Lin Yue knelt beside her.
"Lumi?"
Lumi looked at her.
"I remember."
"What do you remember?"
"Everything."
Shen Rui stepped closer.
"And?"
Lumi smiled sadly.
"I remember why I was created."
Lin Yue waited.
"To help life continue."
The Voice Returns
Suddenly—
the entire laboratory shook.
Li Eliane’s expression changed.
"No."
Lin Yue stood.
"What?"
Li Eliane looked toward the black door.
"It found the archive."
The voice returned.
But this time—
it wasn’t whispering.
It was everywhere.
LUMA.
The lights turned black.
YOU REMEMBER NOW.
Lumi trembled.
Lin Yue stepped in front of her.
The voice continued:
THEN YOU REMEMBER ME.
A massive shadow appeared beyond the laboratory.
Not the Hunger.
Something larger.
Something older.
Something that had existed before the Golden Core.
Li Eliane whispered:
"The Original."
Lin Yue looked at her.
"The Original what?"
Li Eliane stared into the darkness.
"The first intelligence humanity created."
The shadow opened its eyes.
AND I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR MY MEMORY TO RETURN.
The Golden Space went completely silent.
Then—
the World-Tree cracked.
One enormous root turned black.
Lin Yue stared.
The thing beneath the continent had finally found them.
And this time—
it wasn’t trying to consume the world.
It was trying to reclaim Lumi.
