Chapter 80: Chapter Seventy-Eight: The Wilderness Beneath the World

The ground disappeared.

Lin Yue had only enough time to grab Shen Rui’s hand.

"Hold on!"

They fell.

Wind screamed around them.

Lumi shouted.

Aster’s light flashed wildly.

Rocks tumbled past.

Then—

Lin Yue remembered the first rule.

Don’t fight the fall blindly.

She twisted her body.

Her backpack shifted.

She pulled Shen Rui closer.

"Spread your arms!"

"What?"

"Do it!"

He obeyed.

Their bodies slowed slightly against the air.

Below them—

a glowing blue surface appeared.

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

"Water!"

They hit it.

SPLASH!

Cold water swallowed them.

The Underground River

Lin Yue surfaced immediately.

"Shen Rui!"

"I’m here!"

He grabbed her arm.

Lumi emerged from the water, sputtering.

"I hate this world!"

Lin Yue laughed despite herself.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Good."

She turned.

The underground cavern stretched endlessly around them.

A river flowed beneath enormous stone arches.

Glowing plants covered the walls.

Tiny lights moved beneath the water.

The ceiling was impossible to see.

Lin Yue took a slow breath.

Her old training returned.

Stop. Breathe. Assess.

She checked herself.

Head clear.

Arms functional.

Legs functional.

No obvious fractures.

She checked Shen Rui.

"You?"

"I’m fine."

"Lumi?"

"I swallowed something glowing."

"Are you okay?"

"Yes."

"Then don’t swallow anything else."

Lumi nodded seriously.

Survival Mode

Lin Yue looked around.

"We need to get out of the water."

Shen Rui immediately followed.

They climbed onto a stone ledge.

Lin Yue removed her wet outer layer.

"Why?"

Shen Rui asked.

"Evaporative cooling."

She wrung the fabric.

"We’re underground, but I don’t know the temperature or humidity. Staying wet wastes body heat."

Shen Rui nodded.

"You really remember everything."

"I had to."

She looked toward the river.

"Water is everywhere."

Shen Rui smiled.

"So we’re safe."

Lin Yue shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because abundant water doesn’t mean safe water."

She pointed toward the glowing river.

"We don’t know what’s in it."

Aster scanned.

BIOLOGICAL CONTAMINANTS: UNKNOWN.

Lin Yue nodded.

"Exactly."

The First Rule of the Underground

They needed shelter.

Lin Yue examined the cavern.

Not too close to the river.

Not underneath unstable rocks.

Not near strange plants.

Not beside animal tracks.

She finally pointed toward a raised stone platform.

"There."

Shen Rui looked.

"Why there?"

"High enough to avoid flooding."

"Stable?"

"Probably."

"Probably?"

She smiled.

"I’m an experienced wilderness blogger, not a wizard."

Lumi raised her hand.

"I am a wizard."

Everyone looked at her.

She lowered her hand.

"Sort of."

A Strange Discovery

They climbed onto the platform.

Lin Yue immediately noticed something.

Footprints.

Human footprints.

Fresh.

She crouched.

"Someone was here."

Shen Rui’s expression hardened.

"How recent?"

Lin Yue touched the edge of one print.

"Very."

She examined the direction.

"They went toward the eastern tunnel."

Shen Rui looked toward the darkness.

"Then that’s where we’ll go."

Lin Yue shook her head.

"No."

He looked at her.

"Why not?"

"Because we don’t know whether they were running toward safety..."

She pointed toward the tunnel.

"...or running away from something."

Shen Rui paused.

"Good point."

The Cave Ecosystem

Lin Yue began observing.

There were plants growing along the walls.

Some produced soft blue light.

Others had broad leaves that collected moisture.

Small insects crawled beneath stones.

Tiny amphibians moved near the water.

Something larger had made nests beneath the roots.

"This place has an ecosystem."

Shen Rui nodded.

"So?"

"So it means something lives here."

He looked around.

"Something dangerous?"

"Possibly."

Lin Yue pointed toward a broken shell.

"Something large."

Lumi whispered:

"How large?"

Lin Yue studied the fragments.

"Large enough that I don’t want to meet it in a narrow tunnel."

The Old Camera

Lin Yue took out her recovered camera.

It still worked.

She switched it on.

The screen displayed the cavern.

Then—

the camera automatically focused on the wall.

A symbol appeared.

Lin Yue frowned.

"That wasn’t visible before."

Aster scanned it.

MATCH FOUND.

Lin Yue froze.

"Match with what?"

"Original Heartline archives."

Shen Rui stepped closer.

"What does it mean?"

Aster projected the symbol.

Two overlapping circles.

The same symbol from their wedding rings.

Lin Yue touched it.

The wall opened.

The Forgotten Research Station

Beyond the wall—

was a corridor.

Metal.

Not stone.

Artificial lights flickered overhead.

Lin Yue stared.

"This isn’t ancient."

Shen Rui examined the walls.

"It’s technology."

"Advanced technology."

Lumi flew forward.

"This looks like the old station."

Lin Yue nodded.

"Except this one is intact."

They entered.

The door closed behind them.

Aster immediately announced:

ENVIRONMENT SEALED.

Lin Yue turned.

"Can we reopen it?"

"Unknown."

Shen Rui looked at her.

"Problem?"

She nodded.

"Potentially."

Then she smiled.

"But not necessarily."

The Survival Blogger’s Second Rule

Lin Yue checked the corridor.

"No running."

"Why?"

"Because we don’t know what triggers."

She examined the walls.

"No touching unknown controls."

She looked at Lumi.

"Especially you."

Lumi frowned.

"I wasn’t going to."

"You were absolutely going to."

"I was only curious."

"Curiosity is useful."

Lin Yue smiled.

"But uncontrolled curiosity gets people killed."

Lumi nodded.

"Understood."

The Emergency Room

They found a small chamber.

Inside—

food packets.

Water containers.

Blankets.

Medical equipment.

A first-aid station.

Lin Yue stared.

"This place was designed for emergencies."

Shen Rui picked up a sealed container.

"Food is still edible?"

Aster scanned it.

SAFE.

Lin Yue smiled.

"Good."

They finally had supplies.

She organized everything.

Water.

Food.

Medical kit.

Light.

Cord.

Tools.

Navigation equipment.

Shen Rui watched.

"You’re sorting everything."

"Of course."

"Why?"

"So we know exactly what we have."

She looked at him.

"In survival situations, inventory is information."

He nodded.

"And information gives you options."

"Exactly."

The Recording

A screen activated.

A woman appeared.

The same woman.

The alternate Lin Yue.

She looked exhausted.

"If you’re seeing this..."

She took a breath.

"...then you found the underground station."

Lin Yue stepped closer.

The woman continued:

"I created this place because I knew one day you would return."

Lin Yue whispered:

"Why?"

The woman looked directly into the camera.

"Because your memories were not erased."

Lin Yue froze.

"They were divided."

"Your Earth memories."

"Your Golden Space memories."

"And your Heartline memories."

Shen Rui frowned.

"Why divide them?"

The woman answered:

"To keep the Original from finding all three."

The Three Lin Yues

Lin Yue stared at the screen.

"Three memories."

The woman nodded.

"Three versions of you."

"Your previous life gave you knowledge."

"The Golden Space gave you power."

"And Heartline gave you connection."

Lin Yue slowly understood.

"If they were separated..."

"No single enemy could control all of you."

She smiled sadly.

"That was the plan."

The Betrayal

The recording changed.

The woman stood in front of a massive machine.

"I trusted the wrong person."

Lin Yue’s expression hardened.

"Elara?"

The woman shook her head.

"No."

"Then who?"

The screen flickered.

A name appeared.

THE CARTOGRAPHER.

Shen Rui frowned.

"Who is that?"

The woman answered:

"The one who mapped every world."

Lin Yue stared.

"The red points..."

"Yes."

"They’re worlds?"

"Some are."

"Others are settlements."

"Others are laboratories."

"And some..."

The woman hesitated.

"...are prisons."

The recording ended.

The Red Map

A map appeared on the wall.

Thousands of points.

Some blue.

Some green.

Some red.

Some black.

Lin Yue approached.

Her wilderness instincts immediately took over.

She didn’t focus on the center.

She examined the edges.

"What are you doing?"

Shen Rui asked.

"Finding patterns."

She traced the map.

The red points formed a shape.

A giant circle.

Around—

one central world.

Lin Yue’s face changed.

"They’re surrounding us."

Shen Rui looked at the map.

"Who?"

"The red points."

"Why?"

She pointed toward the center.

"Because this world is the center of the network."

The Hidden Purpose

Aster suddenly activated.

NEW INFORMATION.

Lin Yue turned.

"What?"

"The Heartline World is not a destination."

"Then what is it?"

Aster paused.

"A sanctuary."

Lin Yue frowned.

"From what?"

"Everything."

The lights went out.

Complete darkness.

Lumi whispered:

"I don’t like this."

Lin Yue reached for Shen Rui.

"I know."

Something moved in the corridor.

Slowly.

Heavy footsteps.

Boom.

Everyone froze.

Boom.

Closer.

Lin Yue whispered:

"Lights."

Aster activated emergency illumination.

A huge shadow appeared.

Two enormous eyes opened.

The Guardian

The creature stepped into the light.

It was enormous.

Part machine.

Part animal.

Its body was covered in dark metallic plates.

Golden lines ran across its chest.

Its eyes glowed blue.

Shen Rui moved in front of Lin Yue.

She stopped him.

"Wait."

The creature looked at her.

Then—

it lowered its head.

Lin Yue stared.

"It’s not attacking."

The creature emitted a low sound.

Aster translated.

IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED.

Lin Yue stepped forward.

"My name is Lin Yue."

The creature scanned her.

MATCH CONFIRMED. ORIGINAL SURVIVAL ARCHIVE. HEARTLINE KEEPER. GOLDEN SPACE CUSTODIAN.

Then—

another message appeared.

HUMAN SURVIVAL EXPERT.

Lin Yue blinked.

"That last one feels unnecessary."

Shen Rui laughed.

"It’s accurate."

The guardian stepped aside.

Behind it—

was another door.

The Cartographer’s Door

The door opened.

Inside was a vast circular chamber.

Thousands of maps covered the walls.

Worlds.

Continents.

Oceans.

Cities.

Unknown civilizations.

Lin Yue stepped inside.

Her eyes widened.

"This is impossible."

Shen Rui looked around.

"What’s wrong?"

"Nothing."

She smiled.

"Everything."

She walked toward the maps.

Her old instincts returned.

Maps meant terrain.

Terrain meant resources.

Resources meant people.

People meant settlements.

And settlements meant stories.

She realized something.

Her previous life had prepared her for this.

Not because she had known another world existed.

But because she had spent years learning how to understand unfamiliar environments.

She wasn’t simply a survivor.

She was an observer.

A researcher.

A storyteller.

A wilderness educator.

And now—

she had an entire world to explore.

The New Adventure

Lin Yue turned toward Shen Rui.

"We’re going to need equipment."

He smiled.

"How much?"

"Field packs."

"Already have them."

"Water filters."

"Prepared."

"Navigation tools."

"I brought them."

"Medical supplies."

"Packed."

"Food."

"Enough for several days."

She stared at him.

"You prepared all that?"

He smiled.

"You taught me."

Lin Yue laughed.

"Then I suppose you’re officially my expedition partner."

He extended his hand.

"Partner?"

She took it.

"Partner."

Lumi flew between them.

"What about me?"

Lin Yue smiled.

"Field assistant."

"Really?"

"Yes."

Lumi cheered.

The First Expedition

Lin Yue looked at the largest map.

A vast region appeared.

Mountains.

Forests.

Deserts.

Floating islands.

Ancient ruins.

And one enormous unexplored area.

THE SILENT CONTINENT.

No records.

No settlements.

No known maps.

Nothing.

Lin Yue smiled.

Shen Rui noticed.

"That look."

"What look?"

"The one you get before doing something reckless."

She laughed.

"I’m not reckless."

"You once argued with a mountain goat."

"That was different."

"How?"

"It started the argument."

He laughed.

Lin Yue looked back at the map.

"We won’t rush."

"We’ll map the terrain."

"Study the ecosystem."

"Identify hazards."

"Find water."

"Establish safe routes."

"Then determine whether anyone lives there."

Shen Rui nodded.

"And if someone does?"

Lin Yue smiled.

"We introduce ourselves."

The Message

Just as they prepared to leave—

the main screen activated.

A final message appeared.

EXPEDITION OBJECTIVE: FIND THE FIRST HEARTLINE SETTLEMENT.

Lin Yue frowned.

"First?"

A second line appeared.

ESTIMATED POPULATION: 12,400.

She stared.

"Twelve thousand?"

Shen Rui stepped closer.

A third line appeared.

STATUS: MISSING.

Silence.

Lin Yue looked at the map.

The Silent Continent suddenly seemed much larger.

Then—

one final message appeared.

LAST CONTACT: 327 YEARS AGO.

Lin Yue slowly picked up her expedition pack.

The wilderness blogger in her smiled.

The farmer in her calculated supplies.

The Keeper in her sensed magic.

The wife in her looked toward Shen Rui.

He was already ready.

"Let’s go."

Lin Yue smiled.

"Let’s go."

They stepped toward the unexplored continent.

Behind them—

the guardian watched.

And deep beneath the Heartline World—

something else woke.

A voice whispered through the ancient network:

"The expedition has begun."

The maps changed.

A new route appeared.

And at its end—

a single blinking golden point.

HOME.
