Chapter 1238: Chapter 839: Divine Spear Arrives_2
The door remained wide open, but that sly and dangerous Legendary Fallen had vanished into the endless depths of the Void beyond.
A brief moment of absolute advantage, an instant kill of a powerful enemy—yet another great threat slipped away!
It ran.
The Void Creatures actually ran?
"A special specimen. We need to record this battle in detail, especially that one who ran."
Cedric stared at the Gate of Void as he spoke.
...
On the other side.
The mortal battlefield.
The reek of smoke and acrid burning crystal mixed with thick blood-scent, weaving the infernal tone of the outskirts of Hampton Town.
Beyond the temporarily forgotten central killing ground, the makeshift line at the town’s edge had long since fallen into Hell on earth.
The crude barricades the Militia had built with their own Lives were drowned beneath the onrushing tide of crystal-footed bugs.
Twisted violet light flickered in the eyes of these men who should have been simple Farmers and Hunters, replacing both reason and fear.
They howled—not in Human tongue anymore, but in jagged syllables laced with Void Scream—while their bodies crystallized and warped at a speed visible to the naked eye.
From struggling Warriors, they molted into new "infected," turning back to pounce on their former neighbors.
"Hold! Don’t... don’t look into their eyes!"
Old Sheriff Hans’s voice was hoarse and broken. His left arm bent at an unnatural angle, and dark-purple crystal clusters stubbornly climbed up along the wound.
The searing pain and the rending Whispers in his mind nearly made him faint, but he bit down hard on his blood-smeared lips. His right hand still clutched a chipped machete as he used his body to block several crystal-footed bugs trying to leap over a collapsed beam.
Beside him, a young Guard was kneeling, both hands clamped tight over the sides of his helmet. Blood seeped through his fingers, dripping onto the ash-gray crystal dust.
His body trembled violently like chaff in the wind. His eyes were bloodshot, yet he refused to collapse completely; every now and then he forced out a meaningless roar and kicked away a filth-stained claw that got too close.
It was proof that his Spirit had been heavily corroded, teetering on the edge of collapse, yet he still clung to a last shred of instinctive will to resist.
More and more soldiers and survivors fell into the same Status—splitting headaches, scrambled senses, blood streaming from every orifice.
Yet the crude Weapons in their hands had not slipped entirely away, like a broken straw clutched in a bottomless Abyss.
The "emptiness" hanging in the air felt like it was draining all Life, the shrill cries of Low Level Void layered with the agonized roars of the infected and the dying screams of Humans, weaving a symphony of despair.
At that very moment, a piercing shriek ripped across the chaotic battlefield!
Several dark shapes, like arrows tearing through the night, dove from different directions. Heavy forged-steel hooves crashed down on the densest parts of the swarm, splattering flesh and shattering Purple Crystal.
"Night Watcher Squad arriving! Coordinates locked! Clear the landing zone!"
"Night Patrol—Temporary Combat Seventh Squad in position! Long-range firepower, cover the left-wing swarm!"
"Ninth Squad, strangle any targets that broke through the line!"
New Land Bird Knights!
Five Night Watcher Elite Squads—armor styled similar to Cedric’s unit, but bearing different crests and auras—descended like weapons of the gods.
Their individual strength might not reach the heights of a Soul Guardian Squad Member, but their coordination was flawless, their gear superior, their combat style efficient and merciless.
They cut straight into the deadliest pockets of the battlefield.
Rangers’ Magic Power Weapons picked off rippers sprinting toward the interior of the town with precise shots.
Warriors and Knights swung Enchanted Weapons, carving brief gaps through the tide of bugs.
Casters hastily laid down simple Protective Arrays or unleashed small-area dispel Impact waves, buying a sliver of breathing room for the collapsing line.
"Support! It’s support from the Night Watchers!"
Hans almost burst into tears of joy. This short burst of aid couldn’t overturn the battle at once, but it hit like a shot of stimulant, lighting a faint spark of hope in the eyes of soldiers still floundering and fighting in the blood.
Yet this was only the beginning, a buffer before a greater storm.
Suddenly, from the far western horizon came a dull, rhythmic rumble, like distant thunder, but heavier and more orderly.
Moments later, a colossal shadow, like a moving mountain range, emerged beneath the moonlight.
It was a Legion!
The Legion forces of the Light Guardians.
Without a heartbeat of delay, this steel host of the Night Watchers displayed a suffocating efficiency in war.
Hundreds of well-trained Land Birds, clad in thicker armor, were driven forward at speed, each carrying massive folding modules on their backs as they Charged into preset positions.
The Night Watcher squads that had just rushed in had already cleared those spots into open ground.
"Boom! Ka-cha!"
Metal structures snapped open, locking and meshing in an instant.
In just a dozen breaths, the open patch and ruined street corner once crawling with crystal-footed bugs were replaced by quickly erected low walls, bunkers, and improvised forts, all flickering with the faint glow of runes.
This was the Night Watchers’ signature modular fortification—[Folding Defense Wall].
Ranks of combat Casters and Alchemists in the rear of the line began chanting in unison, activating larger devices—[Holy Light Purification Tower].
Soft yet unyielding radiance spread like a vast umbrella, swiftly covering a wide area.
The maddening Whispers and shrill psychic assaults were massively suppressed in an instant.
The screams of wounded soldiers eased noticeably; the bloodshot haze in their eyes began to recede.
Medical teams in white robes, each bearing a massive iron chest, surged toward the wounded soldiers and civilians like a breaking flood.
"Suppress infection! Clear contamination! Stabilize vital signs first!" the medic officer’s calm commands cut cleanly through the din.
