Chapter 1282: Chapter 859: Driven Back (Part 2)
As long as he can endure the pain, he can fight tirelessly, even if his chest is pierced, his stomach torn open, and his arm shattered; it does not affect the power of his attack.
The stalemate only lasted a fleeting ten seconds, yet felt as prolonged as a century.
"Humph!" Karen squeezed the sound from between his teeth, his face twitched a few times, and he suddenly pulled the reins of his wolf mount, which growled in pain and turned its head.
"A bunch of worthless fools! Useless long ears! We’re leaving!" He threw out these harsh words, not looking back as he drove the wolf toward the town’s outskirts.
The rest of the Wolf Knights also seemed relieved, turning their wolves around, iron hooves clattering against the ground, and they awkwardly rushed out of the oppressive small square, raising a cloud of dust.
There was no immediate cheer from those around; all the rabbits watched with bloodshot eyes, observing the backs of those Wolf Cavalry.
Only when the wolves’ silhouettes disappeared at the bend of the dirt road at the town’s entrance did the Rabbit Race feel relieved.
Many people’s legs gave out, sitting down on the ground, issuing suppressed sobs and cries.
They did not cheer for forcing the Wolf Cavalry to retreat this time.
Old Mayor Wendell looked at Gerta, his cloudy old eyes full of gratitude and complex emotions.
Gerta withdrew his gaze from the few young militia who were nearly exhausted, scanning Night Watchers Toru and Sela with slight nods of reassurance, and finally landed on the hilt of his broadsword.
His thumb unconsciously rubbed against the cold metal of the sword guard.
"Tell the town’s young people," he spoke, his voice still low but clearly reaching the ears of every Rabbit Race person.
"This half year, those willing to register at the guild and learn to become adventurers will receive basic training from the guild. The guild will purchase materials for missions combating magical beasts at market price."
"Additionally, the night school already prepared will open soon, and anyone interested can attend to learn more about the outside world."
He did not say "protection" explicitly, but the weight of his words matched the heavy unspoken deterrence just now.
In the square, the warm sunlight fell again, dispelling the gloom and fear left by the Wolf Cavalry.
People stood up, supporting each other, watching the gray-blue backs of the Night Watchers, with a spark named "hope" igniting in their eyes for the first time.
The forever oppressed, never-backed Rabbit Race, witnessed reliance on others’ power for the first time.
Toru and Sela silently clenched their fists.
They knew this battle was just beginning.
Karen’s bloodshot eyes when leaving, like poisoned daggers, were etched on their hearts.
But now, the turnip root is no longer a lone island subject to slaughter.
At least the Night Watchers still stood here; at least they were willing to offer help.
The few who led the event exchanged glances, then pulled each other into the town hall.
Inside the council room, the lights blazed brightly.
It seemed they wanted to discuss something in secret, even drawing the windows and curtains closed.
The sound of beast hoof boots stomping on the ground gradually faded away.
The Rabbit Race residents gathered outside, after a brief silence, started to let out suppressed sobs and sighs of relief.
The heavy wooden door slowly closed, shutting out the disturbances of the outside, leaving only the oppressive air and flickering lights inside.
The members participating in the discussion sat around a heavy solid wood table.
Captain Gerta—Night Watcher and Night Patrol member, also the captain of the small team here.
He sat at the main seat, the gray-blue Night Watcher soft armor washed somewhat faint, but the bronze torch insignia on his shoulder remained striking.
His face was as cold and hard as a rock, his deep eye sockets calmly scanning everyone like eyes of steel.
Using Night Watcher levels to judge, he was the highest-ranked here, reaching Level Nine, a veteran sharpened by countless Void Pit trials.
Beside him was Toru, Night Watcher and Night Patrol.
One of Gerta’s team members, a male Rabbit Warrior, his bloodshot eyes burning with suppressed anger and a hint of barely visible dread.
He gripped his sword hilt tightly, his knuckles turning white, at Level Seven.
On the other side sat Sela, Night Watcher and Night Patrol.
Another Rabbit team member of Gerta’s, female. She seemed calmer than Toru, but her long rabbit ears were trembling slightly, revealing her inner unrest.
Level approximately at Seven, they were the most direct link between the town and the Night Watchers.
Mayor Wendell sat opposite Gerta, the old scar on his face appeared deeper under the light.
This former old warrior now had furrowed brows, his eyes tired yet carrying a do-or-die solemnity.
Though he was a warrior, age had weakened him, his power barely maintained at Level Three.
In the rapid expansion of combat power over nearly ten years, Level Three combat strength was no longer visible.
But before Night Watchers appeared, Level Three combat strength indicated this old warrior also once served in the Beastman Empire’s troops, perhaps even as an elite Sentinel.
This is why the Night Watcher organization, with merely tens of thousands, could suppress the entire world.
Though Night Watchers’ combat power expanded, other countries’ combat power did not keep up.
A Level Three Warrior was already the strongest in townships, Levels Four to Five being the strongest in towns and surrounding areas.
Above Level Five, they were typically regional strong individuals, seen only in cities or large cities.
People at such levels typically serve as army sergeants or are captains of various teams.
