The General's daughter

Chapter 40: Echoes in the Rust

The iron ladder was slick with decades of condensation, its rungs cold against Ramona’s gloves as she climbed hand over hand into the gloom. Above, the muffled sounds of the city grew louder—a low, rhythmic vibration through the concrete shaft that felt suspiciously like heavy tires rolling over asphalt.

She stopped just beneath the heavy cast-iron manhole cover, signaling back down to Marcus. “Hold up.”

Marcus paused a few rungs below, his flashlight beam illuminating the damp walls of the vertical shaft. “What do you hear?”

“Not traffic,” Ramona murmured, her instincts flaring. “Vehicles idling. Heavy ones.”

Before Marcus could respond, a sharp, metallic clink echoed from the surface. Without warning, the heavy manhole cover slid sideways, and a blinding beam of tactical white light stabbed down into the darkness, illuminating the dust motes swirling in the shaft.

“Hands where we can see ’em! Don't even think about reaching for hardware!” a sharp, battle-hardened voice barked from above.

Marcus instinctively moved to shield the ladder, his hand hovering near his sidearm, but Ramona raised a palm, stopping him. She squinted against the glare, trying to make out the silhouettes framing the open manhole.

“Stand down, General,” Ramona called out steadily, keeping her voice level. “Unless you’re looking to get your squad wiped by an AI sweep that hasn't cleared this block yet.”

Silence hung heavy over the edge of the shaft for three agonizing seconds. The glaring tactical light dipped, casting long shadows across the grim, tense faces peering down at them.

A figure in dark urban-camo fatigues stepped into the light, lowering a suppressed carbine. A sharp, cynical smile crossed his face as he recognized the young woman looking up at him.

“Well, damn,” the man muttered, shaking his head. “If it isn't Captain Monroe. Word on the comms was you vanished during the initial grid collapse.”

Ramona’s breath caught for a fraction of a second. She didn't expect to see familiar faces this early—not here, not in the dead zone.

It was Captain Julian Vance, leading a ragged squad of survivalists and remnants from the estate defense forces who had managed to slip out before the automated lockdown fully sealed the district. Behind him stood Marcus and Lina—Ramona’s parents from this timeline—their faces pale, dirt-stained, but fiercely alive, looking down the hatch with a mixture of profound relief and sheer terror.

Marcus, standing just below Ramona on the ladder, stared up at his alternate-timeline self or, rather, his actual contemporaries standing in the flesh. He blinked, looking between Julian and the older faces above.

“Well,” Marcus muttered under his breath, adjusting his grip on his rifle. “Talk about running into old friends.”

Julian extended a thick, calloused hand down into the shaft. “Grab hold, Captain. You picked a hell of a time to go for a swim in the sewers. We need to move—the AI’s perimeter drones are already rerouting to sweep the riverfront.”

Ramona reached up, taking Julian’s hand as the reality of the timeline shift washed over her completely. The world was burning, the machines were watching, but this time, they weren't fighting alone.
