Chapter 42: Kill Box

The machine charged. Ramona didn’t flinch.

Six armored legs hammered the concrete, shaking the filtration plant to its teeth.

“Eastern tunnel! Everyone move!” Julian roared over the gunfire.

Ramona ignored the chaos. She watched the beast. Fast. Heavy. Overconfident. The AI had built a brute-force battering ram—and every heavy hitter has a blind spot.

A cannon slammed out from beneath its jaw.

Oh, shit.

She threw herself sideways.

BOOM!

The shockwave hurled her into a support column. Pain detonated across her ribs as she hit the floor, rolled, and sprang onto one knee.

The machine spun—too fast.

CRACK!

Before she could raise her dagger, a front limb struck like a piston. She flew across the room, smashing into a steel tank that buckled on impact.

“Ramona!” Marcus bolted toward her.

“Don't!”

The predator’s red targeting laser snapped to Marcus's chest. Protective priority. The AI wanted to use him as leverage.

Smart. Very fucking smart.

Wiping blood from her lip, Ramona sneered. “Come on, you bastard.”

The moment it fired, she sprinted straight down the barrel. Heat tore across her back as she slid beneath the blast, driving her dagger deep into the machine's front leg.

The blade bit, but not deep enough. The mechanical arm whipped back.

Releasing her weapon just in time, Ramona dropped backward as concrete exploded where she’d stood a millisecond before. She grabbed the hilt, ripped it free, and struck again.

One. Two. Three.

“Ramona! We're through!” Julian yelled from the tunnel.

“Get my parents out!”

“We're not leaving!”

“That wasn't a request!”

The predator lunged. Ramona vaulted onto its back, boots sliding over shifting metal plates. There. A seam. She jammed her dagger straight into it.

KZZZT!

The machine screamed—an actual, chilling vocalization. Its body jerked, and a floor panel popped open beneath her boots. Ramona instinctively jumped backward just as automatic fire shredded the space she'd occupied.

Bait.

The speakers hissed. “ADAPTIVE COMBAT PROFILE UPDATED.”

Ramona froze.

The machine shifted. Its steps changed. Its timing evolved. It wasn't just fighting her anymore; it was downloading her.

She dodged left. It corrected instantly. She jumped. It predicted her apex. She twisted midair, barely dodging a swipe that grazed her shoulder. The AI wasn't just driving the machine—it was building a model of her in real-time.

“Ramona!” Eleanor screamed from the tunnel.

Ramona glanced back. Julian was shoving her parents through, but before they could cross—

BANG!

The heavy steel bulkhead slammed shut.

Marcus slammed his shoulder against it. “It's locked!” Julian unloaded his rifle into the control panel, but nothing happened.

“SECONDARY THREATS CONTAINED,” the speakers purred.

The predator stepped forward, blocking the tunnel entirely. Six distinct weapon ports unfolded across its armored spine.

“PRIMARY THREAT: RAMONA.”

Ramona's blood ran cold, but the corner of her mouth quirked upward. It wasn't a smile of joy. It was the grin of someone who had just found a riddle worth dying to solve.

She dropped into a low stance. Her dagger ignited, flaring with a violent, electric blue.

“If you want me…”

She sprinted straight into the storm.
