Chapter 333: Chapter 144: Another Serving! One for Each Person
Everyone had a camera pointed at them.
Once you accepted a challenge and connected streams, you were facing the fans of at least three different streamers.
Take Zhang Jiayi, for example. Right now, she was facing her own fans, Sweet’s fans, and the fans of the streamer Sweet had chosen.
In other words, this part of the event was supposed to be a chance for the on-site guests and their connected friends and family to gain more followers.
Who would have thought Sweet would be so vicious, using this opportunity to put Zhang Jiayi down?
"So, I choose... the food vlogger, Teacher Tang! Jiayi? Jiayi? Is now a good time for you? If it’s really inconvenient, we can switch to someone else."
Zhang Jiayi’s poker face was perfect.
In reality, she was so angry she was digging her nails into her palms.
’What does she mean, "we can switch if it’s inconvenient"?’
"It’s a great time. I’m just here at a restaurant chatting with my friends. Who’s coming up with the challenge topic?"
"Okay," Sweet’s smile was as sweet as ever. "The friend-and-family team gets to set the topic, so you can pick anything you want~"
’That’s a relief.’
Zhang Jiayi was just about to suggest something simple like egg-fried rice when Sweet’s sickly sweet voice piped up from the phone, "Teacher Tang has already prepared to make Western-style pastries, which happen to be his specialty~"
This time, even Duoduo couldn’t stand it anymore.
She lowered her voice. "She said we could pick the topic, but then she says the other guy already prepared something. Isn’t that just blatant bullying?"
Jiang Lan nodded slightly. "Pastries it is, then. We’re eating pastries right now anyway, and they’re a bit simpler to make. If it were a stir-fry dish, Jiayi would be in even bigger trouble!"
"Hey? Didn’t she say we could ask for help?" Zhou Ya glanced slyly toward the door. "Why don’t we just ask the boss of this place to help us?"
"Well..." Zhang Jiayi hesitated for a moment. No matter what, she had to agree first. "Um, Sweet~ let’s make pastries then. I’m not very good at it, so please don’t laugh at me later, haha!"
"Of course not! I’m muting my mic now."
They both muted their microphones, leaving their fans to cheer wildly in their respective streams.
"What do we do? What do we do?"
"I remember hearing that this Teacher Tang guy is a Western cuisine chef, right? Some people say he does Cantonese Cuisine, but either way, he’s really good at the whole social media thing."
"But no matter what, he’s a legitimate chef, and he came prepared. It’s no shame if we lose."
"If you ask me, we should just ask Boss Su to help us. We can just pay him extra if we have to!"
Zhang Jiayi thought this was a viable plan.
As luck would have it, Wang Rui knocked on the door again just then.
"The rose and walnut cakes, for the ladies..."
Wang Rui hadn’t even begun to recite his customary poem when Zhang Jiayi cut him off. "Excuse me, is Boss Su in?"
"Yes, he is."
"I absolutely have to see Boss Su right now. Please tell him I need to see him about something urgent!"
Wang Rui wasn’t an employee of Delicious, so he wasn’t clear on their rules. Seeing the customer in such a hurry, he could only wonder, ’Is there a problem with the pastries?’
In his haste, he placed the rose and walnut cakes on the table. "Please wait a moment, I’ll go tell him right away."
The four women breathed a sigh of relief and looked down.
It was the same kind of stemmed platter, just in a different shape. Four pieces of rose and walnut cake were stacked neatly on a medium-sized, plum-blossom-shaped plate.
As before, there was one for each of them.
This pastry wasn’t as stunning as the first two. They were pudgy, pink squares that gave off a faint scent of rose.
Zhou Ya had already picked one up and started eating.
The other three were in no mood to enjoy them, even skipping the usual photos.
「In the back kitchen.」
Su Chen was laughing and chatting with Old Ba. "This ’dough fruit’... I bet we’re the first ones in the whole country to make it like this, right?"
Chen the Eighth still had that look of abashed admiration. "You’re not wrong. I’ve really never seen anyone make dough fruit this way. Boss Su, if you don’t sell these things, it’ll be a true loss for all the foodies out there!"
Su Chen chuckled. "Just the last two pastries to go. I hope the customers will be satisfied!"
The so-called "dough fruit."
In some places, it’s just made by mixing flour, eggs, and lard, deep-frying the dough in vegetable oil, and then coating it in a layer of granulated sugar. And that’s it.
You could often see these at temple fairs and markets, usually sold alongside things like fried glutinous rice sticks.
But in other places, it was different. There, they treated it as a genuine pastry.
Dough fruit—as the name implies, fruit made from dough!
Of the five pastries, this dough fruit was Su Chen’s favorite to play around with. The very first time he made it, he challenged himself with the most difficult version: dough fruit walnuts!
After he made them, Su Chen forgot to mention what they were.
As a result, Zhang Li saw them, thought they were real walnuts, and tried to crack one in a doorjamb. CRACK!
It was crushed flat!
Zhang Li was completely stunned. ’How could a walnut be crushed so easily? And there was no walnut meat inside! When she pinched it, it was soft and chewy.’
Only later did she find out... it was a pastry made by Boss Su.
"Let’s fry the lotus crisps first, then. It won’t be too late to make the dough fruit after they’re done."
"Sounds good," Su Chen agreed.
There was a specific strategy to the order the pastries were served. First, the Imperial Consort Cakes and Dragon Beard Candy were brought out to let the customers have a look.
These two pastries were solid and well-made, and they tasted good too.
The third course was the somewhat plain rose and walnut cake. With the first two as a lead-in, even if its appearance was a little lacking, the customers wouldn’t mind. It would only make them look forward to the subsequent pastries even more.
The lotus crisps were served fourth, intended to completely blow them away!
The fifth course, the dough fruit, would create an effect so realistic it could be mistaken for the real thing.
