The Harem System Rewards Me For Everything
Chapter 62: The Hunt Begins
Entering the Pathfinder’s Guild, a wave of stale ale and smoldering hearthwood replaced the crisp morning air. The usual chaotic energy of the main hall felt subdued today, with only a handful of armored trackers nursing warm drinks.
Crossing the worn stone floor, I kept my shoulders squared. Damara and Katrina walked in perfect sync beside me, their hands resting naturally near their respective weapons.
Hovering near my collar, Sarah’s tiny wings emitted a rapid, anxious hum. Elise stayed glued to my right side, gripping her wooden staff so hard her knuckles had turned bone-white.
Spotting Calvin tucked away in a shadowy corner, I noticed his usual jovial demeanor had completely vanished.
He sat rigid at a circular table, staring down at a haphazard pile of rusted metal brackets and fractured glass.
Pulling a heavy wooden chair out for Elise, I took the seat beside her. "I assume this is the debris from the caverns?"
"Barely a fraction of it," Calvin grunted, sliding a cracked vial toward me. "Damara’s team uncovered these near the lower spillways. The storm washed away the foundation before the trap could fully arm, but the magic bound to the glass remained intact."
Leaning over the table, Damara pointed to a faded rune etched into the rust. "Whoever placed them tried to scrub their magical signature. They failed."
"I brought our senior identifier in before dawn," Calvin explained, his voice low and gravelly. "The residual energy is a highly volatile mix of modern alchemy and precursor technology. We managed to trace the resonance back to its origin."
"Where is he hiding?" Katrina asked, her golden eyes narrowing dangerously.
"The jagged peaks, roughly ten miles north of the village border," Calvin answered, unrolling a weathered map and tapping a spot shrouded in contour lines. "There is an old precursor outpost buried deep inside the cliff face. The guild marked it as an unrecoverable dead zone years ago, but the resonance locks perfectly to those coordinates."
Calvin stopped talking, his gaze shifting heavily to Elise. "It also locks perfectly to the artifact fused to your sternum."
Elise jolted. Her free hand flew upward, pressing hard against the thick fabric of her coat directly over her heart.
"The rogue mage set up a sympathetic tracking web," Calvin continued, his tone carrying a grim weight. "Your relic is the missing core for whatever precursor machinery he is trying to revive. He anchored the outpost’s detection wards to your specific frequency. To navigate the mountain and locate his exact position, you will have to actively channel your magic. You have to become the compass."
The blood completely abandoned Elise’s face. Her breathing turned shallow and erratic. "If I reach out... if I connect with the wards..."
"He will know exactly where we are," Damara finished smoothly, her posture shifting into a predatory crouch.
A suffocating silence dropped over our corner of the guild. The reality of the situation was undeniable. The mage had turned the entire mountain into a massive spiderweb, and he was simply waiting for the fly to pull on a thread.
Elise began to tremble violently. The base of her wooden staff rattled against the stone floor. The raw terror of the flooded cell, the rusted chains, and the cold metal table flooded right back into her expression.
Moving without a second of hesitation, Katrina and Damara flanked her. Dropping to one knee, Katrina placed both of her warm hands firmly over Elise’s shaking fingers. Damara stepped directly behind the chair, resting a solid, grounding palm on Elise’s shoulder.
"You are never going back in a cage," Katrina snarled, her voice vibrating with fierce, territorial aggression. "I will tear him to pieces before he even takes a breath in your direction."
"He used isolation to break you last time," Damara added, her crimson eyes locking onto Elise. "This time, he has an entire vanguard to deal with."
Standing up from the wooden chair, I didn’t offer empty platitudes. I just looked at Elise.
Visualizing the heavy vault door anchored in the center of my chest, I gripped the mental handle and turned it. I didn’t let the heat violently flood my veins. Instead, I compressed the energy, bleeding out a perfectly measured, steady stream of mana down my arms. A dense, brilliant white aura enveloped my hands. It didn’t flicker. It didn’t scorch my skin. It pulsed with absolute, controlled kinetic pressure.
"I picked up a few new tricks this morning," I told her, holding my glowing fist out for her to see. "He isn’t going to lay a finger on you, Elise. Our frontline is not going to break."
Elise stared at the controlled heat radiating from my knuckles. She glanced down at Katrina’s reassuring grip, then felt the steady weight of Damara’s hand on her shoulder. Exhaling a long, jagged breath, she stopped trembling.
Reaching forward, she placed her hand gently over my glowing knuckles. Beneath her heavy coat, a faint turquoise light pulsed in response.
"I will track him," Elise whispered.
Buried deep in my coat pocket, my phone vibrated with a sudden, aggressive intensity. It wasn’t a standard, polite notification chime. It was a heavy, continuous mechanical buzz.
Yanking the device free, I watched as the glass screen bathed the dark table in bright light. A massive, pulsing purple banner dominated the display.
[URGENT QUEST: The Rogue’s End]
[TASK: Eradicate the threat to your party.]
[REWARD: ??? + Massive Town Rep]
Locking the screen, I shoved the heavy device back out of sight. The system had officially authorized the execution.
"We move out right now," I announced, turning back to Calvin. "Keep the standard guild patrols entirely away from the northern peaks. We don’t want any rookies caught in the crossfire."
Calvin gave a solemn nod. "Put him in the dirt, Sam. For Elise, and for everyone else he ruined."
Stepping away from the round table, I subtly opened the Celestial Market interface under the edge of my coat. Tapping rapidly through the supply menus, I burned through a massive chunk of my accumulated Favor points. Bundles of high-tier health potions, concentrated mana elixirs, durable camping tarps, and heavy climbing rope flashed directly into my dimensional storage inventory.
"Form up," Damara ordered, taking the point position as we shoved our way back out into the cold streets.
The mid-morning air carried a bitter, freezing chill. Heavy gray storm clouds banked over the jagged peaks in the distance, threatening sleet by nightfall. Leaving the safety of the market district, we traded the paved cobblestones for the slick, muddy expanse of the northern trail.
Transitioning from the bustling port town into the untamed wilderness felt jarring. Massive, ancient pine trees blotted out the sunlight, casting long, unpredictable shadows across the uneven dirt. The comforting, rhythmic roar of the ocean quickly faded, replaced by the oppressive, suffocating silence of the deep woods.
Taking the lead position, I kept my senses dialed to the absolute maximum. Elise stayed tucked directly behind my shoulders. Every few minutes, she would close her eyes, sending out a faint pulse of turquoise magic to guide our trajectory steadily upward into the cliffs. Katrina guarded our right flank, her sharp claws partially extended, while Damara watched our vulnerable rear.
Two miles deep into the heavy timber, the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up. The ambient temperature seemed to plummet fifteen degrees in a single heartbeat.
Damara’s hand shot forward, her fingers digging sharply into the thick fabric of my coat.
Stopping dead in my tracks, I immediately raised my right fist to halt the formation.
"We are being shadowed," Damara whispered, her ruby eyes tracking something invisible in the dense canopy of pine needles above. She kept her hands away from her weapons, moving with fluid, careful precision to avoid triggering a premature ambush. "Three distinct heat signatures. Moving parallel to us in the branches. They picked up our trail the second we crossed the tree line."
Clenching my jaw tightly, I visualized the iron vault in my core, prepping my muscles to rip it wide open. The rogue mage already knew we were coming, and his welcoming committee had just arrived.
