The Harem System Rewards Me For Everything

Chapter 65: The End of the Nightmares

The blast doors parted, revealing a horrifying clash of eras. Sterile lights stung my eyes. Precursor technology hummed along the walls, wrapping the room in glowing circuitry.

Glass tubes snaked across the ceiling, pumping viscous fluid into a central rig.

The rogue mage stood hooked into the machinery. He wore a leather coat lined with runic wiring pulsing in time with the room’s power grid. Alchemical tubes plugged directly into his spine.

He looked young, but his pale eyes were hollow and void of any empathy. He held a tall staff forged from precursor alloy, its tip sparking.

He wasn’t at all surprised to see us. He adjusted a dial on the console before casting a clinical glance over his shoulder.

"The integration has stabilized beautifully," the mage observed. "Bringing the core directly to the chassis saves me a retrieval fee. Elise. Step forward. We have an extraction to complete."

"She isn’t stepping anywhere," I said, blocking his line of sight.

The mage sneered. He tapped his staff against the floor, activating a sympathetic tether hidden within the precursor floor plates.

A jagged arc of turquoise lightning shot from the central rig. It bypassed my guard, latching straight onto Elise’s chest.

Elise screamed. She dropped to her knees, clutching her coat as the ancient magic tried to rip the relic from her sternum.

"Sarah!" I roared.

Sarah moved faster than lightning as she closed the distance to Elise in a blur, her hands glowing green. She threw herself between Elise and the rig, projecting a translucent barrier over Elise’s kneeling form.

Elise slumped forward, breathing in ragged gasps, but the extraction stopped. Sarah knelt beside her, keeping the shield in place.

"Disrupt his rig!" Damara shouted. She broke into a sprint, melting into the shadows.

I charged straight up the middle, visualizing the iron vault anchored in my chest, I opened the pressure valve. The white aura engulfed my arms, humming with compressed kinetic pressure. It didn’t leak at all this time, it pulsed triumphantly with control.

He tapped his staff against the floor again. The floor plates groaned. A solid metal pillar shot upward from the ground, attempting to crush my ribs and launch me into the ceiling.

I rolled hard to the right. The pillar slammed into the ceiling with a crash, raining sparks across the floor.

Seeing me close the distance, the mage grabbed a vial of red substances attached to his collar and injected it. His veins bulged black against his pale skin. His pupils dilated. He moved with enhanced speed, crossing the room in a flash.

He swung his staff at my skull, but I raised my forearm, catching the strike. The impact rattled my jaw, sending a shockwave down my spine, but the aura absorbed the damage.

I pushed back, throwing a right cross aimed at his ribs. The mage leaned away, dodging the punch, and swept the blunt end of his staff toward my knees.

The laboratory devolved into a chaotic brawl with Damara operating as a lethal disruption. She skirted the edges of the room, using surgical tables as cover to avoid arcs of lightning.

She threw her daggers with precision, aiming for the glass vials feeding his spinal rig.

A dagger found its mark. Glass shattered. Corrosive red fluid spilled across the floor, eating through precursor wiring and limiting his movement. He snarled, firing a blast of energy toward the shadows, but Damara was gone.

Hidden panels in the walls slid open. A dozen automated defense drones dropped into the air, their red targeting lasers sweeping the room, searching for Sarah and Elise.

Katrina ran interference. She leaped off the central console, intercepting the drones before they could lock onto our backline. She smashed the hovering machines with brutal strikes, her claws tearing through rusted casings. She grabbed one of the machines and hurled it into two others, keeping the crossfire focused on herself.

I stayed toe-to-toe with the mage. He summoned electrical arcs from the floorboards, forcing me to shift my footing to avoid being electrocuted. He swung his staff with calculated fury.

I relied on Torin’s technique. I regulated my mana, keeping the aura dense enough to block, but tight enough to prevent wasting core energy. I absorbed his magical blows and deflected his sweeps. The recent acid burns on my forearms screamed in protest every time the alloy crashed against my guard.

Ignoring the sting completely, I gritted my teeth, swallowed the metallic taste of blood in my mouth, and waited patiently for the perfect opening.

The mage finally overextended his swing. Infuriated when Damara shattered another of his vital stimulant vials, he grew sloppy. He brought his staff down in a crushing overhead strike meant to cleave my skull in two.

Instead of blocking it, I stepped inside his guard, driving my glowing right fist directly into the center of his metal staff.

The compressed kinetic energy stored within my aura exploded outward upon impact. The weapon shattered into jagged splinters.

The mage stumbled backward, his hollow eyes widening in shock as the remnants of his weapon clattered against the floor.

I didn’t give him a second to recover his balance. I swept my leg low, kicking his heavy boots entirely out from under him. He crashed hard onto the metal floor. The violent impact tore the remaining alchemical tubes loose from his ceiling rig.

I stood over him, my chest heaving. I raised my glowing fist, drawing the last reserves of my compressed mana, prepared to deliver the final blow to his skull.

"Wait," Elise commanded.

I stopped. I held my position over the downed mage, keeping my aura flared bright in case the alchemical stimulants gave him the strength to try and move.

Elise walked slowly across the laboratory. The dampening shield had faded. She gripped her wooden staff tightly in both hands, her knuckles white. She didn’t look terrified. She didn’t look like the broken, bleeding girl we had pulled from the flooded cell. She looked resolved.

The mage stared up at her from the floor. He coughed, spitting a splatter of dark blood onto the precursor metal beneath his cheek. "You are nothing without that core," he wheezed, a pathetic sneer touching his lips. "I pulled you from a dusty archive. I gave you a purpose."

"You gave me a nightmare," Elise replied coldly. "And now I’m waking up."

She drove the wooden base of her staff directly into the shattered precursor rig resting next to his head.

She didn’t cast a healing spell. She didn’t offer any mercy either. She channeled a violent, blinding surge of turquoise energy completely through her relic, feeding it straight into the broken machine. The magic overloaded.

The massive pulse of precursor energy flooded the room’s exposed wiring. It surged backward, traveling directly into the open alchemical ports permanently fused to the mage’s spine.

The mage convulsed violently. His runic wiring burned out in a flash of blinding light, turning black and brittle under the intense overload. He let out a choked gasp as his ability to channel mana was irreversibly crippled. He slumped against the metal floor, barely conscious, staring blankly at the ceiling, powerless.

Deep inside my coat pocket, my phone vibrated with a heavy finality.

The tension in the laboratory evaporated into the stale air. The precursor machinery hummed down into absolute silence. The automated defenses sparked one final time and died.

Damara moved quickly, stepping out of the shadows. She secured the mage’s encrypted journals from a nearby terminal, snatching intact precursor components from the surgical trays.

"Calvin is going to owe us a massive bonus for this," Damara noted, kicking a broken alchemical vial aside with the toe of her boot.

Katrina walked over, wrapping her arm securely around Elise’s shoulders. She pulled the healer into a brief, reassuring hug, ignoring the grime and blood on her own coat. "You did it. He can never hurt you, or anyone else, ever again."

I let the white aura fade completely from my hands. I closed the mental valve in my chest, cutting off the flow of mana to let my core rest. I rolled the lingering stiffness out of my shoulders and turned toward the exit.

The acid burns on my arms still throbbed fiercely, and my ribs ached from the impact of the brawl, but the victory felt definitive.

"It’s finally time for us to go home now," I told them all.

We walked out of the mountain together.

Navigating back through the deactivated, silent corridors and stepping past the hexagonal vault door, we emerged into the clearing. The freezing rain from the morning had stopped entirely.

The storm clouds had broken, leaving the jagged peaks bathed in the calm, fading golden light of the late afternoon.

The oppressive shadow of Elise’s traumatic past was finally handled.

Our frontline had held perfectly today, our synergy was undeniable, and our family was finally safe.
