The Harem System Rewards Me For Everything
Chapter 68: The Basement Adventure
We left the comfortable warmth of the living room behind, trading our heated blankets for our weapons.
I held the Precursor Master Key flat in my palm. The thin line of blue light pulsed across the dark alloy, acting like a metaphysical compass needle.
I stepped into the kitchen, and the blue light flared instantly brighter, lighting the entire area in blue.
"It’s pointing right at the pantry," Elise noted, staying close to my side.
Katrina strutted ahead, pressing her nose against the slatted wooden door. "Smells like flour, dried meat, and cinnamon. Definitely no monsters."
I pulled the pantry door open, revealing just a narrow closet lined with wooden shelves, holding jars of spices and canned vegetables I had bought from the Celestial Market.
However, the key in my hand was vibrating so hard it tickled my palm. The blue beam aimed directly at the blank back wall.
"Ignis," I called out over my shoulder.
The familiar pitter-patter of tiny footsteps echoed on the hardwood. Ignis walked painfully slowly into the kitchen, his feather duster tucked neatly under one mechanical arm. "Yes, Master Sam?"
"You mentioned a subterranean expansion sector. How exactly do I open it?"
"You currently hold the master override in your hand, Sire," Ignis replied, his optics whirring as they focused on the key. "You simply need to present it to the threshold."
I squeezed past a heavy sack of potatoes and pressed the hexagonal cylinder flat against the solid oak beadboard at the back of the pantry.
A soft, melodic chime rang out, oddly similar to a high-end elevator arriving. The wooden shelves seamlessly split down the middle, sliding silently into the walls to reveal a spiraling staircase leading deep underground.
"Well, that is incredibly convenient," Damara smirked, drawing a single dagger just to be safe. "Shall we?"
"After you, Ignis," I joked, gesturing toward the stairwell.
Ignis immediately took a few hilariously slow steps backward, his mechanical head shaking back and forth. "I must respectfully decline, Sire. I lack the administrative clearance to enter the genesis sector. Furthermore, I have pressing dusting duties in the parlor."
"Alright then, suit yourself," I laughed, putting the key safely in my coat pocket.
Katrina took the lead, her golden feline eyes adjusting to the dim light instantly. I followed close behind her, with Elise and Sarah flanking my sides. Damara took up the rear, keeping a watchful eye on our six.
The staircase went impossibly deep, winding in a tight, continuous spiral. But the further down we walked, the more the architecture fundamentally changed. The familiar wooden floorboards and brick foundation of the manor smoothly transitioned into a sleek, seamless white alloy.
Soft, warm light bled directly from the walls themselves, illuminating the corridor without a single visible bulb or torch.
It was a jarring contrast to the rogue mage’s lair. There was no rusted iron grating, no stench of chemical runoff, and no exposed, sparking wires. Everything down here was pristine, silent, and flawlessly clean.
"This doesn’t feel like a dungeon," Elise whispered, running her pale fingers along the glowing white handrail. Her chest relic pulsed in calm, rhythmic synchronization with the ambient light of the walls. "It feels... asleep."
The staircase ended at a massive circular door, completely seamless and flush with the glowing white walls. A sleek, minimalist console stood to the right. It didn’t have any rusted levers or physical buttons, just a clean hexagonal indentation.
I handed the Master Key to Elise. She didn’t hesitate this time. Stepping forward, she slid the dark metal cylinder directly into the slot.
The entire room chimed a pleasant, welcoming note. The circular door split into perfectly symmetrical triangles, folding backward into the walls like the mechanical lens of a camera.
A massive, brilliantly lit control room lay beyond the threshold. The space was enormous, suspended over a glowing blue abyss. A dozen floating geometric platforms formed a fractured, disconnected path toward a central terminal at the far end.
The moment my boot crossed the threshold, the room’s ambient light shifted from crisp white to a soft, pulsing amber. A synthetic voice chimed from the ceiling, completely devoid of any malice.
"Genesis Sector security engaged. Synergy Hazard Course initiated."
"What the hell is a hazard course?" Damara blurted, placing a hand on her hip. "Celestia is making us run an obstacle course in our own basement?"
"She clearly wants to see if we can work together without just punching things," I reasoned, smiling widely. "Let’s have some fun with it."
A grid of red lasers swept across the first set of floating platforms. I tossed a spare copper coin from my pocket into the beams to test the waters.
The coin didn’t melt or explode. The grid simply flared, and a gentle kinetic pulse launched the metal harmlessly back onto the staircase landing.
"It’s not lethal," I noted, watching the coin bounce against my boot. "It’ll just push us back to the start if we mess up. Let’s clear it."
Katrina grinned, her tail swishing eagerly behind her. She backed up a few steps and launched herself over the first gap. She cleared the moving lasers effortlessly, landing lightly on the floating metal platform. Damara followed right behind her, using a burst of rogue speed to blur past the sweeping grid before the beams could reset.
I stepped up to the edge, but the platform beneath my boots suddenly lurched.
The artificial gravity inverted for a split second, trying to pull me upward into the ceiling. I immediately opened the mental valve in my chest. I didn’t need to punch anything; I just needed an anchor.
The dense white aura of my Iron Skin flared down my legs. I forced the heavy, compressed kinetic pressure straight into my boots, locking myself firmly to the floor plates until the gravity stabilized.
"Show off," Katrina teased from the next platform over. She took a confident step forward, but her boot slid wildly. Her arms pinwheeled as she scrambled to keep her balance. "Whoa! The floor is completely frictionless!"
"I can fix that," Sarah chimed in.
She stepped past me to the edge of the platform, her tall frame moving with elegant confidence. Her hands glowed with brilliant green light as she pulled the ambient humidity from the cavernous room.
Instead of projecting a shield, she summoned a surging wave of scalding hot spring water. She washed the boiling liquid directly over the frictionless plating and forced it to rapidly evaporate.
The flash-boiling process left behind a thick, jagged layer of calcified mineral deposits.
Katrina used her sharp claws to grip the stone, pulling herself smoothly across the gap. Damara glided gracefully right behind her.
I walked across Sarah’s bridge, keeping one hand securely on Elise’s lower back to steady her. We bypassed the shifting gravity wells and the kinetic laser grids with ease, moving entirely in sync. Our party dynamics operated flawlessly, treating the ancient precursor security system like a casual afternoon puzzle.
We reached the central terminal without triggering a single reset.
Elise stepped up to the sleek console. She pressed her bare palm flat against the glass surface. The turquoise light of her chest relic bled seamlessly into the machine. The amber security lights immediately shifted back to a welcoming white.
"Hazard Course disabled," the synthetic voice announced.
The massive control room powered down, the heavy hum of precursor machinery finally fading into a comfortable silence. The floor panels in front of Elise retracted smoothly. A sleek, cylindrical pedestal rose from the blue abyss, projecting a vibrant, three-dimensional hologram of our entire manor above it.
Deep in my pocket, my phone vibrated aggressively. I pulled it out just as the glass screen synced perfectly with the ancient precursor terminal. A bright gold notification banner flashed across my display.
"System override," I read aloud. "Sanctuary Core engaged. Manor upgrade unlocked. Tier two expansion. Available balance, ten million Favor."
"What is that?" Katrina asked, her tail swishing as she peered at the floating hologram.
I swiped my thumb across my phone screen. The hologram instantly shifted, displaying a sprawling, highly detailed catalog of massive architectural additions.
"It is a renovation menu," I explained, a wide smile breaking across my face. "Celestia just gave us the keys to completely redesign the house."
The ominous atmosphere of the underground vault vanished. It immediately turned into an excited planning session.
Damara leaned over the console, her crimson eyes scanning the glowing blueprints. "They offer a Tactical Sparring Room. It features fully automated combat dummies and reinforced flooring."
"Look at this one!" Sarah pointed to a sprawling, glass-domed addition. "An indoor botanical garden. I could connect it directly to the hot springs."
Elise gently swiped the projection, her face lighting up. "Sam, look at the Grand Culinary Suite. It has enchanted cooling pantries and massive stone prep islands."
I looked at the massive Favor balance sitting inside my system account. We all fought incredibly hard for it. I didn’t want to hoard it.
"Pick out whatever you all want," I told them warmly, feeling deeply grateful for this peaceful moment. "Let’s build our home."
