The Heiress They Lost Came Back Overpowered
Chapter 158 - 157: Attacked
Hearing her words, Leo Grant glanced back. Sure enough, three black cars were trailing them from a short distance, clearly thinking they were being discreet.
Leo Grant’s expression turned ugly. It wasn’t because he was afraid, but mainly because he’d finally managed to get some time alone, and these assholes just had to come and interrupt him and his girl.
’Have they no sense at all? Are they that eager to die?’
’Forcing me to kill during the New Year celebration. Can’t they wait until after the holidays to die?!’
Yvonne Lowell showed no sign of panic. On the contrary, she started teasing the scowling Leo Grant.
"This is President Grant’s personal car, so they’re definitely not here for me. Looks like you have quite a few enemies, President Grant. Need any help?"
"All you do is make fun of me." Leo Grant ruffled her hair in mock exasperation, then pulled out two handguns from under the seat and handed one to Yvonne Lowell.
"Don’t worry, your boyfriend isn’t completely useless. You just sit tight."
"Fine by me. I’ll just treat it as a New Year’s blockbuster," Yvonne Lowell said with a nonchalant shrug.
Leo Grant then sent a few texts on his phone before looking up to order Ian Lynch, "Stick to the original route toward the Western Suburbs. And step on it."
"Yes, sir." Ian Lynch floored the accelerator, and the black Maybach shot forward.
Their original destination was in the western part of the city anyway, so this was perfect. They could head straight to the suburbs and shake their tail for good.
The scenery outside grew increasingly desolate, and soon, theirs were the only cars on the road.
The three black cars behind them were clearly getting impatient. They sped up, trying to cut them off and force them to stop, but to little effect.
The assassins had just been mocking the car in front of them, thinking how stupid their targets must be not to notice they were being followed. Now, they finally realized they were the ones being played. The killers in the back and passenger seats began firing at the car ahead.
BANG.
BANG.
BANG.
Ian Lynch didn’t slow down, skillfully weaving to dodge the bullets.
Aside from a shattered taillight, their car was completely unscathed.
Leo Grant gave Yvonne Lowell’s fingertips a reassuring squeeze, then leaned out the window and fired several shots.
Two of the bullets struck the gas tank of the car on the far left. Moments later, a loud BOOM erupted from behind.
The gas tank had ignited, blowing the car sky-high and sending up plumes of thick smoke.
The other two cars were untouched by the blast and continued their relentless pursuit.
It was easy to see that these people only had eyes for the money. To them, teammates were completely expendable.
Not a ripple of emotion disturbed Leo Grant’s calm expression. He coolly instructed Ian Lynch, "Turn right at the upcoming intersection. Boss Crawford and his men are waiting at the end of the road."
Yvonne Lowell glanced back through the rear window and couldn’t help but click her tongue.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Your enemies have no honor, do they? Opening fire without so much as a word. Good thing this car has bulletproof glass, or I’d be a goner."
Assassins: And your man has honor?! Is blowing up a car what you call honorable?!
Yvonne Lowell: They started it. Got it?
Just as they were about to turn at the intersection, Yvonne Lowell lowered her window. Quick as a flash, she fired three shots at the black car to their rear right.
The first bullet hit the foreigner leaning out of the passenger seat squarely between the eyes. The other two shattered the front windshield.
After firing, Yvonne Lowell immediately raised the window. She blew cockily at the gun’s muzzle. "Nice piece. But my marksmanship is even better."
"My girl is incredible. A modern-day sharpshooter," Leo Grant gushed, laying the praise on thick.
A vein throbbed on Ian Lynch’s forehead. ’We’re in a damn chase for our lives!!’ he screamed internally. ’Do you two have to be so ridiculously calm?! If someone held a knife to your throats, would you two stop for a quick make-out session before fighting back?!’
A normal person getting chased: A life-or-death race, heart-pounding terror, a narrow escape from the jaws of death.
His two masters getting chased: Business as usual. Who cares who dies, as long as it’s not us.
Suddenly, sand and dust swirled up in front of the car. The once-flat road was now riddled with deep, uneven pits and mounds.
If it weren’t for the car’s excellent suspension, their asses probably would’ve been rattled into several extra pieces.
"Oh? So they brought an Earth Ability User with them? Had I known one of our kind was here, I wouldn’t have gone so easy on them. It’s my first time seeing someone so eager to serve themselves up on a platter, and spending so much to do it, too."
Yvonne Lowell crossed her arms and glanced sideways at Leo Grant, a playful smirk tugging at her lips. "A normal, everyday person like me is just terrified. You have to protect me, President Grant."
Leo Grant chuckled. ’This sweet little troublemaker just loves to tease me,’ he thought. ’Doesn’t she just want to see me use my superpower? I refuse to believe she hadn’t figured it out already.’
"Don’t worry, I’ll protect you. Stop the car!"
The first part of his sentence was for Yvonne; the second was an order for Ian Lynch.
Ian Lynch heard the command and immediately stopped the car, pulling a handgun from the glove compartment and loading it.
Leo Grant’s normally deep eyes were now filled with bloodthirsty killing intent. Reaching his hand out the window toward the car behind them, he channeled his superpower and clenched his fist.
As he did, the metal components of the other car began to deform, rapidly crushing inward.
The sudden compression threw the occupants into chaos. It was as if the car’s internal parts had developed a mind of their own, skewering them where they sat.
They stopped breathing before they even had time to scream.
The occupants of the other car had no time to gawk at their teammates’ gruesome fate. Seeing Leo Grant’s car stop, the three survivors inside grabbed their guns and jumped out, planning to use the chaos to launch a surprise attack from the right.
Seeing this, Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow and murmured softly, "I just wanted to quietly watch a blockbuster. Why did you have to come as a group to bully a poor, weak woman like me? Bullying the weak, ganging up on someone... it’s all wrong. You people are just too much."
The words had barely left her lips when she stuck her hand out the window. A Fire Dragon shot straight toward them. Two of the men were instantly engulfed in flames, becoming human torches.
Her other hand wasn’t idle; she raised the pistol and fired four shots at the last survivor.
Bloody holes appeared in the man’s arms and legs, and he collapsed to his knees.
"I know it’s the first day of the New Year, but there’s no need to give me such a formal greeting, is there?" Yvonne Lowell covered her mouth in mock surprise. "How embarrassing."
Ian Lynch’s lips twitched. ’I don’t know if the assassins can tell,’ he thought, ’but I sure as hell can’t see how embarrassed you are.’
Glancing at the gun in his hand, then back at the carnage behind them, Ian Lynch felt his pride take a severe blow.
’On high alert? Check. Handgun loaded? Check. Magazine...? Still full.’
