The Heroines Can Hear My and the Protagonist's Inner Voice!?
Chapter 216: The Protagonist is Engaged
She wore a dark business suit.
No unnecessary jewelry.
Her long hair fell neatly behind her shoulders.
Several travelers noticed her.
Some recognized her.
The Gu Family’s young lady.
President of Qinghe Technologies.
One of the city’s most discussed unmarried women.
Unfortunately...
She was currently waiting for a man she had never agreed to marry.
Her assistant stood nearby.
"President Gu."
Gu Qingya looked toward her.
"What?"
"You’ve checked the time six times."
"He’s late."
"The plane only just landed."
"He could walk faster."
The assistant wisely remained silent.
Gu Qingya looked toward the terminal doors.
Her grandfather had called the previous night.
Not asked.
Informed.
Lu Chen was returning.
He would become her personal bodyguard.
And...
The engagement would finally be discussed.
Gu Qingya had rejected all three parts.
Her grandfather had ignored her.
She had argued.
He had reminded her that Lu Chen’s grandfather once saved his life.
She had argued again.
He had said the engagement represented a promise between families.
She had told him that she was not a reward exchanged between old men.
Her grandfather had become silent.
Then repeated that Lu Chen would protect her.
The call had ended badly.
Now...
She was here.
Because refusing would only create another confrontation.
The terminal doors opened.
Passengers began exiting.
Families reunited.
Drivers raised signs.
Then...
Lu Chen appeared.
He carried one bag.
Walked slowly.
And immediately noticed Gu Qingya.
His eyes moved over her.
Not lecherously.
Possessively.
Like he had located something that belonged to him.
Gu Qingya felt it instantly.
Her discomfort deepened.
Lu Chen approached.
He stopped several feet away.
For a moment...
Neither spoke.
Then...
He smiled.
"Qingya."
Her eyes narrowed.
"Miss Gu."
Lu Chen’s smile widened.
"Still cold."
"We don’t know one another."
"We’re engaged."
"No."
The nearby assistant froze.
One of the bodyguards looked toward the ground.
Lu Chen lifted an eyebrow.
"No?"
"I did not agree to any engagement."
"Our grandfathers did."
"They are not the people getting married."
Lu Chen studied her.
Most men became nervous beneath Gu Qingya’s gaze.
Lu Chen looked amused.
"I like that."
She stared.
"What?"
"The attitude."
Her expression became colder.
"I’m not performing for you."
"I know."
He stepped closer.
One bodyguard instinctively moved.
Lu Chen’s eyes shifted.
The bodyguard froze.
For one brief second...
Something murderous passed through Lu Chen’s gaze.
Then disappeared.
He looked back toward Gu Qingya.
"You’ve become beautiful."
"I don’t care what you think."
"You will."
Her fingers tightened around her phone.
Lu Chen smiled.
"Relax."
He walked past her and opened the rear door himself.
"I just got home."
"We have time."
Gu Qingya did not move.
Lu Chen looked back.
"Aren’t we leaving?"
She stared at him.
"This is my car."
He nodded.
"Yes."
"You don’t open my door and order me inside."
Lu Chen leaned one arm against the roof.
"I opened it politely."
"You assumed I would follow."
"You came to pick me up."
"My grandfather forced me."
"Still came."
Gu Qingya took a slow breath.
She looked toward her assistant.
"Sit in the back."
The assistant blinked.
"President Gu?"
"I’ll sit in front."
Lu Chen laughed softly.
Gu Qingya ignored him.
She entered the front passenger seat.
Her assistant sat in the rear.
Lu Chen joined her in the back.
He didn’t seem offended.
If anything...
He seemed entertained.
The car pulled away.
For the first several minutes...
Silence.
Gu Qingya checked emails.
Lu Chen looked through the window.
China.
Home.
Skyscrapers replaced ruined cities.
Traffic replaced military convoys.
People walked openly without looking for snipers.
He had spent more than a decade outside the country.
Training.
Fighting.
Building Black Wolf.
Earning enemies.
Earning money.
Becoming a name whispered across mercenary circles.
Now...
He was back.
And sitting three feet from his fiancée.
Lu Chen looked toward Gu Qingya.
"Your grandfather said someone has been threatening you."
She did not look up.
"He exaggerates."
"Someone attacked one of your company vehicles."
"No one was inside."
"A warning."
"Corporate intimidation."
"Same thing."
Gu Qingya finally looked toward him.
"I already have security."
Lu Chen glanced at the driver.
Then at the bodyguard seated beside him.
The bodyguard met his eyes.
Lu Chen smiled faintly.
"No."
The bodyguard’s jaw tightened.
Gu Qingya noticed.
"My security is professional."
"Professional against businessmen."
Her eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?"
"They protect you from reporters."
"Stalkers."
"Drunk heirs."
Lu Chen’s expression became colder.
"They won’t protect you from people who actually want you dead."
The bodyguard spoke.
"You don’t know us."
Lu Chen looked toward him.
"I know your right shoulder is injured."
The bodyguard’s expression changed.
"You compensate when you sit."
"Your jacket hides a pistol poorly."
"Your reaction time when I approached Miss Gu was almost a full second too slow."
The bodyguard remained silent.
Lu Chen leaned back.
"You’re not useless."
"Just not enough."
Gu Qingya stared at him.
"Do you always insult people immediately after meeting them?"
"Only when it’s useful."
"You’re incredibly arrogant."
"I’m usually right."
"That doesn’t make it less irritating."
Lu Chen smiled.
"You’ll get used to it."
Her expression turned freezing.
"I am not getting used to you."
The assistant looked down at her tablet and wished desperately to disappear.
Lu Chen continued smiling.
"We’ll see."
Gu Qingya turned away.
Everything about him annoyed her.
The confidence.
The assumptions.
The way he spoke as if the future had already been decided.
Most of all...
The way he kept referring to their engagement like her opinion had no relevance.
She had expected someone rough.
Perhaps socially awkward after years overseas.
She had not expected this level of possessiveness.
Her phone vibrated.
Grandfather.
She answered.
"Grandpa."
"Did you find him?"
"Yes."
Lu Chen smiled toward the phone.
Gu Qingya looked away.
Her grandfather continued.
"Bring him directly to the house."
"I have work."
"Cancel it."
"I am not canceling an executive meeting."
"Qingya."
Her jaw tightened.
Then Lu Chen reached forward.
He took the phone from her hand.
Everyone froze.
