Chapter 113: Chapter 113: The Only Ordinary Person

Xi Yunxui stared at Biyu for a while longer, her mind still occupied with the astonishing transformation she had just witnessed.

Who would have thought that the little chicken she had been carrying around could turn into a human girl?

And not only that, the system had actually referred to Biyu as her protector, yet when she had asked what exactly she was supposed to be protected from, the system had promptly fallen silent. It was almost as though it had deliberately chosen to reveal just enough information to make her curious before refusing to satisfy that curiosity.

Xi Yunxui sighed inwardly.

’Forget it. There’s no point in thinking about it anymore. If the system doesn’t want to answer, I can spend the entire day trying to get something out of it and still end up with nothing.’

She had more than enough experience dealing with the system’s unhelpful tendencies to know when she was wasting her time. Besides, Biyu was right there in front of her, looking perfectly healthy despite the transformation, and that was what mattered most for now.

She could investigate the mystery surrounding her later.

Just as Xi Yunxui was about to turn her attention to something else, a knock sounded at the door.

Knock, knock.

She glanced toward the entrance. "Coming!"

After making sure the others were settled, she walked over and opened the door, only to find Auntie Zhang standing outside.

"Auntie Zhang?"

"Yunxui, there will be a family dinner this evening," Auntie Zhang informed her with her usual warm expression. "The whole family will be attending, and Madam Huo has specifically requested that you handle the cooking."

Xi Yunxui blinked.

Madam Huo wanted her to cook for the entire family?

Although the request came as a little surprise, it was hardly unreasonable. She was employed as a maid in the Huo residence, and cooking was one of the many tasks she was capable of handling. If Madam Huo had specifically requested her, it probably meant that the older woman was satisfied with her cooking.

"All right, Auntie Zhang. I’ll be there in a little while," she replied with a smile. "I’ll head to the kitchen shortly."

"Very well. I’ll wait for you there, then."

Auntie Zhang gave her a nod before turning to leave, her footsteps gradually fading down the corridor.

Xi Yunxui watched her go before closing the door.

The moment she turned around, however, her gaze landed on the three unusual companions occupying her room.

One troublesome goat-like creature and two little girls.

Although Biyu had only just transformed into her human form, she had already settled comfortably on the bed, while Hui stood nearby, seemingly fascinated by her new appearance. King C, meanwhile, appeared to have recovered from his earlier shock and was once again behaving as though he owned the place.

Xi Yunxui looked at them, then let out a long sigh.

’What a handful.’

She wasn’t particularly worried about taking them outside. The Huo family wasn’t excessively strict with its servants, and the household members were already familiar with King C’s existence. Having a goat wandering around the residence wasn’t exactly an extraordinary occurrence anymore, at least not to the people who lived there.

The real problem was Biyu.

With her striking crimson hair, she would attract attention wherever she went. Even if Xi Yunxui explained that the girl was a relative or a family member, someone would inevitably become curious about her origins. Given that Biyu had only just appeared in human form, Xi Yunxui wasn’t ready to deal with the questions that might follow.

After considering the matter, she walked toward the bed and stopped in front of Biyu.

"Biyu, can you change the colour of your hair?"

Biyu tilted her head, her crimson eyes fixed on Xi Yunxui.

"Why?"

Xi Yunxui pointed toward the girl’s fiery red hair. "It’s a little too bright. If you walk around with hair that colour, people are bound to stare at you."

She paused, searching for a way to explain her thoughts without making Biyu feel as though she was being restricted.

"It’s not that I want you to hide your appearance or anything like that. It’s just that I don’t want to keep asking you to stay in this room whenever I have work to do. You’ve only just transformed, and you should be able to go outside and enjoy yourself instead of being cooped up in here all day."

As she spoke, Xi Yunxui glanced at Hui, who had been listening attentively, before continuing.

"The Huo family isn’t particularly strict about things like this. They already know King C, so I can introduce you and Hui as family members if anyone asks. You can accompany me around the residence, spend time in the garden, or go wherever you like, provided you don’t wander somewhere you’re not supposed to be. But if your hair is this conspicuous, people will naturally want to know who you are and where you came from."

She didn’t want her companions to feel as though they were prisoners simply because she was concerned about keeping their identities a secret.

Xi Yunxui had spent enough of her previous life watching people suffer because they lacked freedom and choices. Even though these creatures were now living under her care, she had no intention of treating them as though they were possessions she could lock away whenever they became inconvenient.

If a simple change in hair colour would allow Biyu to move around more freely, it was worth asking.

Biyu listened to her explanation without interrupting. After a moment, she nodded in understanding.

"That makes sense."

She raised one hand, bringing it toward her head. With a casual wave of her fingers over her fiery hair, a faint ripple of spiritual energy spread through the air.

Xi Yunxui watched in fascination as the crimson strands began to change.

The transformation happened almost instantly. The brilliant red faded from the roots to the tips, replaced by a rich, glossy black that flowed over Biyu’s shoulders. Within seconds, every trace of the fiery colour had disappeared, leaving behind a head of smooth, dark hair that framed her delicate face beautifully.

Biyu lowered her hand and examined the result with an expression of mild satisfaction.

"Is this better?"

Xi Yunxui stared at her.

’What?’

She blinked, then leaned forward slightly as though a closer look might help her understand what she had just witnessed.

’She changed her hair colour with a wave of her hand? Just like that?’

Her gaze moved from Biyu’s hair to the girl’s face, then to the hand she had used to perform the transformation.

’Was there even any effort involved?’

Before Xi Yunxui could recover from her astonishment, Hui let out an excited gasp.

"Sister Biyu, you’re so amazing!"

The little girl hurried closer, her dark eyes sparkling as she admired Biyu’s newly black hair.

"That was incredible! Your hair changed colour just because you waved your hand!"

Biyu smiled at her enthusiasm. "It’s a rather simple thing to do."

Xi Yunxui’s mouth twitched.

Simple?

She had spent a good portion of her life being an ordinary person, and even after transmigrating into this world, she had needed a system to help her navigate cultivation. She had only recently reached Intermediate Level, Stage Three, and even that achievement had required considerable effort.

Meanwhile, Biyu had transformed from a chicken into a little girl, possessed mysterious spiritual power, and could apparently change her hair colour with no more effort than someone brushing dust off their sleeve.

Xi Yunxui glanced at Hui, whose unusual nature had already been revealed by her ability to transform into a tiger-like creature. Then she looked at King C, who was anything but an ordinary goat.

Finally, she turned her attention toward the spiritual consciousness where Jianshan resided, remembering that he was an ancient creature powerful enough to make her entire body tremble when his spiritual energy surged.

A strange feeling crept over her.

’Wait a minute. Am I the only ordinary person in this room?’

The thought was so absurd that she almost laughed.

She had originally believed that acquiring a cultivation system would be the beginning of her extraordinary journey. Now, however, it seemed that everyone around her was far more mysterious than she was.

Even her little chicken had turned out to be a hidden powerhouse.

’Wonderful. Just wonderful.’

Xi Yunxui shook her head, deciding that she would need to get used to these surprises if she intended to keep living with her companions.

There was no point in comparing herself to them. As long as they weren’t deliberately causing trouble, she could accept a little mystery in her life.

Besides, she had a family dinner to prepare.

Remembering her task, Xi Yunxui turned toward King C and crouched down in front of him.

"King C, I need to go to the kitchen now."

The goat lifted his head to look at her.

Xi Yunxui rested a hand on her knee and met his gaze with an unusually gentle expression.

"I know you’ve all had to stay in this room for the past few days, and I’m sorry about that. I wasn’t trying to keep you locked away. I just had a few things to deal with, and I didn’t want you wandering around while I was busy."

She reached out and patted his head.

"But you can come outside with me now. I’ll be working in the kitchen, so you can stay nearby or go to the garden with Hui and Biyu. Just promise me you won’t cause any trouble, all right?"

King C stared at her.

For a moment, the usually troublesome creature seemed unable to respond. Xi Yunxui’s soft tone, coupled with the apologetic look on her face, had caught him entirely off guard.

He had been prepared to grumble about being confined to the room, perhaps even demand compensation in the form of food. After all, what was the point of having a master if he couldn’t occasionally make unreasonable demands?

Yet Xi Yunxui wasn’t scolding him or ordering him around. Instead, she was crouching in front of him, explaining herself and asking him nicely not to cause trouble.

Somehow, that made it difficult for him to complain.

King C’s heart softened.

’Forget it. Since she’s asking so nicely, I’ll let it go this time.’

He lifted his chin with as much dignity as a goat could muster and gave a reassuring bleat.

"Don’t worry. I won’t cause any trouble."

Xi Yunxui studied him suspiciously.

King C’s promises were not always the most reliable things in the world, especially when food was involved. However, he seemed sincere enough at the moment, and she didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere by questioning him too much.

"Good boy," she said, giving his head one final pat.

King C’s ears twitched.

He might not have admitted it aloud, but he was rather pleased with the praise.

Xi Yunxui straightened and glanced toward the washroom. Since she was about to enter the kitchen and prepare a meal for the entire Huo family, she wanted to freshen up first.

"I’ll be back in a moment. Don’t go anywhere just yet."

She stepped into the washroom, rinsed her face with cool water, and patted it dry with a clean towel. The refreshing sensation helped clear away some of the lingering confusion in her mind, allowing her to focus on the task ahead.

After hanging the towel back in its place, she checked her reflection briefly before returning to the bedroom.

Her maid uniform had become slightly rumpled during the earlier commotion, so she straightened her collar, smoothed the fabric, and adjusted her sleeves. Once she was satisfied with her appearance, she picked up what she needed and headed for the door.

Biyu rose from the bed, her newly black hair falling neatly down her back. Hui immediately followed her, while King C trotted toward the entrance with an enthusiasm that suggested he had already begun thinking about what might be available in the kitchen.

Xi Yunxui noticed his expression and narrowed her eyes.

"King C, remember what you just promised me."

The goat looked at her innocently.

"What? I haven’t done anything!"

"You haven’t done anything yet," Xi Yunxui replied, giving him a pointed look.

Hui giggled, and even Biyu’s lips curved into a faint smile.

King C snorted in protest but didn’t argue further.

Satisfied that she had at least made her warning clear, Xi Yunxui opened the door and stepped into the corridor. The three companions followed close behind her, their footsteps and movements filling the previously quiet hallway with a lively sense of company.

As they made their way toward the kitchen, Xi Yunxui glanced back at them.

A goat, a little girl with mysterious origins, and a newly transformed protector who looked like an ordinary child but clearly wasn’t one.

Her life had certainly become more complicated than she had ever expected.

Still, as she watched Hui walk beside Biyu, chattering excitedly about her new appearance while King C trotted ahead with his usual confidence, Xi Yunxui couldn’t help smiling.

Perhaps having a few unusual companions wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

At least she would never have to worry about being bored.

With that thought, she continued toward the kitchen, completely unaware of how much the supposedly ordinary family dinner was about to reveal.
