The Infinity Beast System
Chapter 91: The Den of Iron I
Chapter 91: Chapter 91: The Den of Iron I
The cold mountain gale whipped down the gorge, carrying the biting scent of pine resin and crushed shale dust.
Crouched along the jagged crest of an overgrown ravine flanking the northern rail spurs, Eric and Alena peered down into the shadow of the valley. Beside them, Impy shifted on his haunches, his crimson skin and bat-like wings hidden beneath the dark folds of a spare traveler’s cloak.
Down on the narrow access trail below, the three tagged goons, along with half a dozen other armed men clad in composite leathers bearing the Iron-Tooth insignia, were practically sprinting along the rusted tracks. They were not conducting routine patrols, nor were they stopping to extort the perimeter toll-posts.
They were moving like a hornets’ nest in a blind frenzy.
"Eric," Alena whispered, her crimson eyes narrowing as she tracked the moving dust plumes below. "Why are they rushing like that? Did our reconnaissance get flagged?"
"I don’t think so," Eric replied, his brow furrowing as he checked the steady pulses of the three Beacon Stones in his tactical belt pouch. "They never doubled back to check their rear arcs. But this is completely irregular. They’re scrambling like someone just blasted an emergency muster call down their lines."
Alena adjusted her Blackthorn exosuit, the matte-blue alloy humming silently against her wrist. "Should we intercept them on the trail?"
"Too exposed out in the valley basin," Eric whispered, resting a gloved palm on the gravel. "I’ll scout them ahead and find out where they’re gathering. You hold position here and keep your eyes on the gorge entry."
"Be careful," she nodded.
"Always."
Eric did not hesitate. Funneling a fine stream of starlight-dense liquid mana through the conduits of his calves, his silhouette blurred into the surrounding brush.
Shadow Steps.
Moving with Major mastery, Eric did not displace a single dry leaf or kick up a pebble. He melted from the shadow of one iron-oak trunk to another, tracking the gang’s frantic bootprints across the weathered rail ballast.
Within two minutes, he crested a blind curve in the canyon wall and came to an abrupt halt behind an abandoned ore-sorter hopper.
Ahead of him, cut directly into the vertical granite cliff, was the gaping entrance of the old Black-Iron Mine.
*Seriously?* Eric muttered under his breath, leaning through the rusted iron frame to peer closer. *They turned a decommissioned public mine into their regional headquarters?*
He shook his head with a grim, calculating smirk.
It was either the dumbest tactical play on the continent, or a stroke of utter genius. On official district schematics, this shaft had been condemned decades ago due to tectonic instability. Civic patrols avoided it, explorer satellites filtered it out, and the rugged terrain made vehicle sweeps impossible. Yet right before his eyes, more than a dozen armed thugs poured through the threshold, weapons drawn, before the steel gate rumbled shut behind them.
*Something big is definitely happening.*
Eric stayed flat against the cold iron of the hopper for thirty unbroken minutes. He waited with predatory discipline, observing the cliffside until the mountain wind was the only sound echoing across the canyon. No further reinforcements arrived, and no exterior patrols emerged.
"The coast is clear."
Eric glided across the open gravel like a ghost, coming to a halt before the primary threshold.
Up close, the true scale of the syndicate’s base was obvious. This was not a damp, forgotten burrow. The entrance had been heavily modified with modern industrial engineering. Thick, pre-stressed ferro-concrete lintels braced the archway, sealed beneath coats of moisture-resistant sealant, while high-tensile carbon-steel beams lined the shaft. The threshold was swept clean of debris daily. Collapsing this tunnel with standard demolition charges would take a military siege cannon.
Eric stepped over the boundary line, sinking deep into Shadow Steps to erase his kinetic presence entirely.
He drifted along the walls, his hand resting on the hilt of the Wavecaller. After penetrating eighty meters into the subterranean dark, the crude stone tunnel suddenly gave way to a broad, split junction.
The corridor diverged into two distinct paths, left and right.
"What in the world...?" Eric halted, his eyes scanning the corridor layout.
Both branches were lined with reinforced steel doors fitted with magnetic latch systems. The syndicate had not just occupied a mine; they had hollowed the mountain out into an underground compound, barracks, armories, and storage depots carved straight into the living bedrock.
Just as Eric considered how to clear the maze, faint acoustic vibrations resonated through the rock from the deepest part of the right-hand corridor.
Muffled shouts, harsh barks, and the scrape of weapon crates.
Bypassing the silent rooms along the corridor, Eric ghosted down the right path until he reached the final, reinforced double doors at the end of the shaft. Pressing the side of his skull against the cold alloy panel, he tuned his senses inward.
The cavernous hall behind that door was packed. He could hear the low, rumbling hum of active mana generators, the clinking of armor plates, and dozens of rough, agitated voices speaking all at once.
*They’re all crammed inside one staging hall.*
Eric stepped back into the shadows and raised his silver smartband. Tapping the screen silently, he pinged Alena’s direct terminal:
[Eric: I’m routing the tunnel coordinates. Get down here quietly. They are all gathered at the end of the right wing.]
Within minutes, a faint displacement in the corridor gloom signaled her arrival. Alena slipped into the alcove beside him, Impy trotting silently at her heel with his bat wings coming out of the holes of the jacket.
In a confined underground tunnel like this, a single spoken syllable could compromise their positions. Neither of them said a word.
They brought up their smartband text arrays, communicating in dead silence.
[Alena: Think it’s an ambush? A trap?]
[Eric: We stay sharp. Could be. But they seem genuinely panicked.]
[Alena: Impy’s auditory sensory range is exceptional. Let’s see what he can pick up through the seal.]
Alena knelt slightly, tapping the little imp’s shoulder.
"Impy, listen to what they’re saying in there," she gestured to the gap beneath the door.
"Umm~"
The Dark Imp flattened his pointed ears against the cold steel door, his yellow slit eyes narrowing as his tail twitched rhythmically.
"Ummm... umm... umm..."
The creature pulled back, flashing his sharp, shark-toothed grin as he communicated with Alena via their Soul tether.
Alena’s expression darkened, her fingers flying across the text interface:
[Alena: They have intel on us. They know the kingdom dispatched an investigator to eradicate them. But our mission parameters were classified at the highest administrative tier. How could frontier cutthroats know?]
[Eric: You think there’s a rat inside the regional office? Or CRI?]
[Alena: Unclear. The mandate was issued directly from the central ministry to the institution. If there is a leak, it runs deep.]
[Eric: Then should we pull back, establish distance, and report the compromise to the proctors?]
[Alena: No. If we withdraw now, they will scatter into the wilderness before nightfall. We will never catch all of them. Every single thug, goons, and loot is locked in that room right now. We wipe the syndicate out here and now.]
Eric looked at the heavy door, then back to the screen:
[Eric: Alena, look at the heat signatures through the vents. There are at least eighty to a hundred armed men in that hall. Plus their beasts, and a Captain-rank syndicate boss. That is suicide to charge head-on.]
[Alena: I am a Captain. And I am a Blackthorn. I can break their vanguard.]
She took out a slender, thumb-sized crystal phial from her storage ring. Inside swirled a completely transparent, shimmering liquid that bent the ambient light around the glass, making the flask appear hollow.
She pressed the vial firmly into Eric’s palm.
[Alena: This is a high-grade Invisibility Potion I refined in my private laboratory. It masks your physical presence, your thermal footprint, and your visual silhouette for ten full minutes. I will breach the primary doors and draw their aggregate fire. You slip through their flanks, eliminate their spell-casters, and cut down any cowards trying to reach the emergency shafts.]
Eric stared down at the cool glass in his hand.
*An authentic Invisibility Potion...*
On the open market, an alchemical potion capable of true invisibility for ten minutes would fetch a million credits easily.
[Eric: This... is too valuable.]
Alena fixed him with an unyielding, razor-sharp look, her ruby eyes blazing with cold noble resolve:
[Alena: Don’t hesitate. This is a high-risk operation. In battle, hesitation gets people killed.]
Eric held her gaze for a split second, then let out a slow, silent breath through his nose. The tension in his shoulders smoothed into cold, predatory focus.
He popped the wax seal on the vial, downed the tasteless, cool liquid in a single swallow, and drew the Wavecaller from his hip.
As his hands and the blade dissolved into thin air, he sent a final text:
[Eric: Let’s clean house.]
