THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 105 — The Bone Domain

  • Next Chapter

The forest behind Kael had gone quiet.

The Verdant Serpent remained beneath the ancient trees, severely weakened but alive.

Kael stood several meters away, the Darven Origin Blade resting against his shoulder.

The System screen hovered before him.

[Legendary Beast Defeated.]

[Verdant Serpent.]

[Beast Path Compatibility: 14%]

[Prison Stability: Unstable.]

[Legendary Immortality Remaining: 34:11:28]

Kael stared at the timer.

He had spent more than half of the original hundred hours.

And one Legendary Beast remained.

The Bone Sovereign.

But something about the System message bothered him.

Prison Stability: Unstable.

Kael turned toward the distant black tower.

“Serpent.”

The massive creature opened one eye.

“What?”

“You said the final lock remains.”

“Yes.”

“Then why is the prison already unstable?”

The Verdant Serpent was silent for several seconds.

Finally, it answered.

“Because we were never the entire prison.”

Kael frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“The Shadow Lion was one lock.”

“I was another.”

“The Bone Sovereign is the third.”

Kael waited.

“And the central prison?”

The Serpent looked toward the black tower.

“That is what the locks were built to protect.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“So when the three Beasts are defeated…”

“The outer stabilizers disappear.”

“And the central prison becomes exposed.”

“Yes.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“Then the Bone Sovereign isn't the final problem.”

The Serpent lowered its head.

“No.”

“It is the final guardian.”

A pause.

“The thing beneath the tower is the true prisoner.”

Kael looked toward the horizon.

“That explains the message.”

The Serpent nodded.

“The Bone Sovereign knows more about it than we do.”

Kael's grip tightened.

“Then I'll ask him.”

“You may not get the chance.”

Kael turned.

“Why?”

The Serpent looked toward the eastern horizon.

“The Bone Domain has already awakened.”

The Journey

Kael left the Verdant Domain before the forest could fully recover.

He didn't return to the central plain.

Not yet.

The unknown black tower remained too dangerous to approach while only one Beast remained.

Instead, he crossed the boundary between domains.

The environment changed almost immediately.

Green vegetation disappeared.

The trees became thin.

Then twisted.

Then nonexistent.

The ground turned gray.

Small pieces of white material covered the soil.

Kael stopped.

He crouched.

He picked one up.

A bone.

Not human.

Not animal.

Something larger.

Older.

He looked ahead.

The Bone Domain stretched across the horizon.

A vast wasteland filled with ruined structures, dry valleys, enormous stone formations, and endless skeletal remains.

There was no wind.

Yet thousands of tiny bones moved across the ground.

Kael stood.

“That isn't natural.”

Nightfang appeared beside him.

The Golden-Eyed Nightfang had remained near the boundary between the domains, watching.

Kael glanced at him.

“You followed me.”

“I was curious.”

“You're becoming more useful.”

Nightfang's golden eyes narrowed.

“Careful.”

Kael smiled.

“Can you sense the Bone Sovereign?”

Nightfang looked toward the wasteland.

“Yes.”

“How far?”

“Far enough that you should stop asking.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

Nightfang's expression became serious.

“The Bone Sovereign isn't like the others.”

“How?”

“The Shadow Lion ruled through instinct.”

“The Verdant Serpent ruled through territory.”

“The Bone Sovereign rules through information.”

Kael's expression changed.

“Information?”

“He doesn't need to see you.”

A pause.

“He can know you're there.”

Kael immediately became cautious.

The Bone Domain was different.

The previous Beasts had responded to his actions.

This one might already know his arrival.

He looked toward the wasteland again.

“Then let's assume it knows everything.”

Nightfang nodded.

“That would be wise.”

The First Army

Kael moved slowly.

His armor remained partially damaged from the Verdant battle.

The V-01X was functional but unstable.

The GL-02 had little ammunition remaining.

His mana was still recovering.

The Origin Blade, however, had returned to normal after the Verdant resonance faded.

Kael checked his equipment.

He couldn't afford another fight immediately.

The Bone Domain was too large.

He needed information.

He walked for nearly an hour.

Nothing attacked.

That was the problem.

There were no monsters.

No birds.

No insects.

No movement.

The silence felt intentional.

Kael stopped.

“Something's wrong.”

Nightfang looked around.

“They're watching.”

“Who?”

Nightfang pointed his snout toward the ground.

Kael looked down.

A small bone protruded from the dirt.

It moved.

Just slightly.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Metal Control wouldn't work.

The bone wasn't metal.

He touched it.

The System activated.

[Bone fragment detected.]

[Magical residue: High.]

[Soul residue: Detected.]

Kael immediately pulled his hand away.

“It's connected.”

“To the army?”

Nightfang nodded.

“The entire domain is connected.”

Kael slowly looked around.

The wasteland suddenly seemed much less empty.

Every bone.

Every skeleton.

Every ruined structure.

Everything could be part of the same network.

Then—

A voice echoed across the wasteland.

“Kael Darven.”

Kael froze.

The voice had not come from one direction.

It had come from everywhere.

The ground.

The sky.

The ruins.

The bones beneath his feet.

Kael slowly raised the Origin Blade.

“Bone Sovereign.”

A deep laugh echoed.

“So you know my name.”

“I know enough.”

“No.”

The voice became quieter.

“You know only what the others wanted you to know.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“The Shadow Lion said you were a mage.”

The voice answered.

“I am.”

“The Serpent said you know more about the prison.”

“I do.”

“Then explain it.”

Silence.

Then—

“No.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Because you have not earned the answer.”

Kael almost laughed.

“I'm supposed to earn information?”

The voice replied calmly.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Survive.”

Kael's smile disappeared.

The bones around him began moving.

One.

Then ten.

Then hundreds.

Then thousands.

Skeletons slowly rose from the ground.

Kael stepped backward.

The dead wasteland had become an army.

The Bone Army

Skeletons emerged from the soil.

Some were small.

Others were enormous.

Some carried swords.

Some carried spears.

Others held bows.

Several wore ancient armor.

A few carried magical staffs.

Kael's System began analyzing them automatically.

[Bone Soldier — Level 21 — Common]

[Bone Archer — Level 24 — Elite]

[Bone Knight — Level 29 — Elite]

[Bone Mage — Level 34 — Boss]

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Then the System detected something else.

[Soul Furnace detected.]

[Location: Unknown.]

[Army reinforcement active.]

Kael immediately understood.

The army wasn't limited by the number of skeletons already standing.

As long as the Soul Furnace remained active—

the army could replenish itself.

He looked toward the horizon.

The number of skeletons continued increasing.

Thousands became tens of thousands.

Kael's expression became serious.

“I'm not fighting all of them.”

The voice of the Bone Sovereign echoed.

“Good.”

Kael looked up.

“Then what do you expect me to do?”

“Find me.”

Kael paused.

The army surged forward.

The first wave attacked.

Kael moved.

The Origin Blade flashed.

A skeleton weapon was knocked aside.

Kael stepped through.

Another attacked.

He ducked.

Another.

He moved sideways.

He wasn't trying to kill everything.

He was looking.

The Bone Domain had to have a structure.

A commander.

A power source.

A central location.

Kael switched to the V-01X.

Configuration IV — Suppression.

He fired into the ground.

BOOM!

The shockwave knocked several skeletons backward.

Kael used the opening.

He sprinted through the army.

A bone knight attacked.

Kael blocked.

CLANG!

The knight's strength surprised him.

Kael immediately changed his stance.

A second knight attacked.

Kael used the Origin Blade to redirect the weapon.

Then kicked the creature backward.

A bone mage raised its staff.

Blue energy formed.

Kael's eyes widened.

“Magic!”

The spell fired.

Kael rolled.

The ground froze where the spell landed.

He immediately switched weapons.

V-01X.

Mana Disruption.

The round struck the mage.

The spell collapsed.

Kael rushed forward.

The Origin Blade struck.

The mage fell.

The surrounding skeletons immediately closed in.

Kael jumped onto a ruined wall.

He looked over the battlefield.

The army wasn't moving randomly.

It was forming circles.

Every time Kael killed a group—

the surrounding skeletons repositioned.

They were herding him.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

“It's controlling the entire army.”

Nightfang growled.

“I told you.”

Kael jumped from the wall.

He landed between two groups.

Then immediately moved left.

The skeletons adjusted.

Kael moved right.

They adjusted again.

He stopped.

They stopped.

Kael smiled.

“Interesting.”

The Bone Sovereign was testing him.

Not trying to kill him.

Trying to measure him.

Kael raised his hand.

Metal Control activated.

Ancient metal fragments buried beneath the ruins rose into the air.

The skeletons looked up.

Kael smiled.

“You want information?”

The fragments formed blades.

“Then I'll give you some.”

The weapons fired outward.

Not toward the skeletons.

Toward the ruins.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Several ancient structures collapsed.

Dust filled the air.

The army's formation broke.

The Bone Sovereign's voice became slightly deeper.

“You are destructive.”

Kael stepped through the dust.

“No.”

He looked across the battlefield.

“I'm changing your map.”

The Hidden Formation

Kael noticed something beneath the ruins.

A pattern.

Several stone structures were positioned at equal distances.

Each contained a faint blue glow.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Kael immediately recognized it.

A formation.

He opened his System.

[Ancient Necromantic Formation detected.]

[Primary Function: Soul Energy Distribution.]

[Secondary Function: Army Reinforcement.]

[Central Node: Unknown.]

Kael's eyes sharpened.

“The Soul Furnace isn't the only thing.”

The Bone Sovereign was using the entire region as a magical formation.

That meant destroying skeletons was pointless.

The army would keep returning as long as the formation remained intact.

Kael looked toward the five glowing structures.

“Then I don't fight the army.”

He pointed.

“I dismantle the formation.”

The Bone Sovereign laughed.

“You're learning.”

Kael rushed toward the nearest node.

A Bone Knight intercepted him.

Kael blocked the first attack.

Then another.

Then another.

The Knight was stronger than the earlier ones.

[Bone Knight — Level 31 — Elite]

Kael shifted his stance.

He used the Origin Blade to catch the weapon.

Then redirected it.

The Knight lost balance.

Kael struck the leg.

The creature collapsed.

A second Knight attacked.

Kael fired the V-01X.

BOOM!

The suppression round knocked it backward.

Kael continued running.

He reached the first node.

The blue energy pulsed.

Kael touched it.

The System responded.

[Necromantic Authority detected.]

[Administrator Authority incompatible.]

Kael frowned.

He couldn't override it.

He needed another way.

He looked at the structure.

Stone.

Bone.

Magical energy.

No metal.

His strongest ability was useless.

He needed to understand the formation instead.

Kael pulled a book from his Space Ring.

Advanced Magical Formations.

He opened it while running.

The Bone Sovereign's voice echoed.

“You brought books.”

Kael didn't look up.

“I brought several.”

“You intend to read during combat?”

“I intend to survive.”

He quickly scanned the diagrams.

The formation needed a central energy flow.

The five nodes weren't independent.

They were connected.

Destroying one wouldn't work.

But—

If he reversed the flow at one node—

The energy would travel backward.

Kael's eyes widened.

“That could overload the entire formation.”

The Bone Sovereign answered.

“Correct.”

Kael stopped.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you're letting me try.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The voice became quiet.

“Because I want to see whether you understand the difference between destruction and control.”

Kael closed the book.

“I hate riddles.”

The First Counter

Kael raised his hand.

Metal Control activated.

The ancient metal fragments around the ruins gathered.

There wasn't much.

But enough.

He shaped them into thin conducting rods.

Then drove them into the ground around the node.

The formation reacted.

Blue energy flowed toward the metal.

Kael's eyes widened.

“It works.”

He redirected the energy.

The node's glow changed.

The surrounding skeletons froze.

Then—

BOOM!

A pulse spread through the battlefield.

Hundreds of skeletons collapsed simultaneously.

Kael smiled.

“One.”

But another wave immediately rose.

The Bone Sovereign spoke.

“You changed one node.”

Kael looked toward the other four.

“Exactly.”

He ran.

The second node.

Bone Archers attacked.

Kael dodged arrows.

One struck his armor.

[Vanguard Armor Integrity: 11%]

Kael grimaced.

The armor was becoming a liability.

He removed its external reinforcement.

The damaged armor pieces detached.

They fell away.

Kael moved faster.

The second node came into view.

A Bone Mage stood before it.

The System analyzed it.

[Bone Mage — Level 37 — Boss]

The mage raised its staff.

Blue flames gathered.

Kael raised the V-01X.

Mana Disruption.

The round struck the mage's chest.

The spell collapsed.

Kael rushed forward.

The Origin Blade struck.

The mage blocked with its staff.

CLANG!

Kael's arms shook.

The mage was stronger than he expected.

It raised its free hand.

A wave of blue energy erupted.

Kael jumped.

The attack passed beneath him.

He landed.

The mage turned.

Kael fired again.

BOOM!

The V-01X shattered the staff.

Kael closed the distance.

The Origin Blade touched the node.

He redirected the flow.

The second node inverted.

The army stopped again.

[Necromantic Formation Stability: 100% → 72%]

Kael smiled.

“Two.”

Then—

The ground beneath him shook.

The Bone Sovereign spoke.

“Enough.”

Every skeleton in the domain stopped.

Kael froze.

The army became completely motionless.

Then the blue flames inside their skulls disappeared.

Silence.

Kael slowly raised his weapon.

“What's happening?”

The voice answered.

“I was wondering how long it would take you to notice.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“Notice what?”

The remaining skeletons began moving.

But they weren't approaching him.

They were walking away.

All of them.

Toward the center of the Bone Domain.

Kael watched.

“Why are they retreating?”

Nightfang appeared beside him.

His golden eyes were wide.

“They're gathering.”

“For what?”

Nightfang stared into the distance.

“For the Sovereign.”

The sky suddenly darkened.

A massive blue flame appeared above the central ruins.

Then another.

Then another.

The remaining skeletons gathered beneath them.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Tens of thousands.

All converging on one location.

Kael stared.

The Bone Sovereign was calling its army back.

Not to defend the formation.

To combine.

The voice echoed across the wasteland.

“You have fought the army.”

“You have studied the formation.”

“And you have understood the first lesson.”

Kael tightened his grip.

“What's the second?”

The answer came immediately.

“An army is only dangerous because someone commands it.”

A massive shockwave erupted from the center of the Bone Domain.

The skeletons began merging.

Bone armor connected.

Weapons fused.

Blue flames spread from one skeleton to another.

The entire army transformed.

The resulting shape rose into the sky.

A gigantic skeletal figure formed.

Not the Bone Sovereign.

Something else.

An Undead Colossus.

The System analyzed it.

[Undead Colossus]

Level: 58

Grade: Overlord

Type: Constructed Undead

Traits: Soul Reinforcement, Bone Fusion, Regeneration, Army Core

Kael's expression changed.

“Level fifty-eight…”

He immediately understood.

It was stronger than him.

And it was being powered by the entire army.

The Bone Sovereign's voice echoed.

“Defeat it.”

Kael looked around.

“Is this your challenge?”

“Yes.”

Kael smiled.

“Fine.”

He raised the Origin Blade.

The Undead Colossus charged.

Kael ran toward it.

The first collision shook the entire Bone Domain.

BOOM!

Kael blocked the massive bone weapon.

The force drove him into the ground.

His knees nearly gave out.

The V-01X fired at point-blank range.

BOOM!

The Colossus barely moved.

Kael immediately realized the problem.

Its body wasn't one creature.

It was an army.

Every part repaired another.

He sliced through one arm.

The arm regenerated.

He damaged the chest.

The bones rearranged.

Kael retreated.

The Colossus swung again.

He dodged.

The ground shattered.

Kael fired.

Suppression.

Penetration.

Mana Disruption.

Nothing lasted.

He looked toward the formation.

The five nodes.

Two had been inverted.

Three remained.

The Colossus was drawing power from them.

Kael understood.

The Colossus wasn't the enemy.

It was the symptom.

The formation was still the source.

He smiled.

“Got you.”

He turned.

The Bone Sovereign's voice came from somewhere far away.

“You've discovered the answer.”

Kael ran toward the third node.

The Colossus pursued.

It raised its enormous weapon.

Kael didn't look back.

He fired a Spatial Anchor behind himself.

The Colossus slowed.

Kael reached the third node.

Metal rods.

Reversal.

The flow changed.

[Necromantic Formation Stability: 72% → 54%]

The Colossus staggered.

Kael ran to the fourth.

The Colossus recovered.

It swung.

Kael jumped.

The attack missed.

He reached the fourth node.

Another reversal.

[54% → 32%]

The Undead Colossus cracked.

Kael headed toward the fifth.

But then—

A figure appeared before him.

Tall.

Ancient armor.

A massive magical staff.

Blue flames burning inside empty eye sockets.

Kael stopped.

The figure looked down at him.

The battlefield became silent.

The Bone Sovereign had finally appeared.

Its voice was calm.

“You've come far enough.”

Kael slowly raised the Origin Blade.

The Sovereign looked at the sword.

Then at Kael.

Then toward the damaged formation.

“You have defeated the Shadow Lion.”

“You have defeated the Verdant Serpent.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The Bone Sovereign lifted its staff.

“And now…”

Blue fire spread across the wasteland.

“…you have entered my domain.”

The System activated.

[Legendary Beast detected.]

[Name: Bone Sovereign]

[Level: 87]

[Grade: Legendary]

[Primary Attribute: Death]

[Type: Undead Mage]

[Traits: Soul Flame, Necromantic Domain, Skeleton Summoning, Spell Amplification, Soul Barrier]

Kael's expression became serious.

Level eighty-seven.

Thirty-seven levels above him.

And unlike the Shadow Lion and Verdant Serpent—

this opponent was a mage.

A strategist.

A commander.

The Bone Sovereign looked directly into Kael's eyes.

“You've spent hours learning how I fight.”

Kael tightened his grip.

The Sovereign smiled.

“Unfortunately…”

Blue flames erupted from its staff.

“…you have only learned how I allow my army to fight.”

The entire Bone Domain lit up.

[Warning.]

[Soul Furnace awakened.]

[Necromantic Domain activated.]

[Undead Army reinforcement: Maximum.]

Kael stared at the countless blue flames appearing across the wasteland.

The timer continued.

[Legendary Immortality Remaining: 32:47:09]

The Bone Sovereign raised its staff.

“Let us see how many times you are willing to die.”

Kael lowered his stance.

The Origin Blade began to hum.

“However many it takes.”

The Bone Sovereign smiled.

“Excellent.”

Its staff struck the earth.

BOOM.

The entire Bone Domain answered.

And the battle for the final lock began.
