THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 107 — The Sea of Soul Fire
The sky disappeared.
Blue fire covered everything.
The ruins.
The wasteland.
The enormous skeletal army.
Even the air itself seemed to burn with cold, spectral flames.
Kael stood in the center of the Bone Domain with the Darven Origin Blade in his hand.
The Soul Furnace remained open behind the Bone Sovereign.
Its blue flames rose higher.
Higher.
Higher.
Until they touched the sky.
The System flashed.
[Necromantic Domain: Maximum Output.]
[Soul Furnace: 100% Release.]
[Soul Energy Conversion: Active.]
[Bone Sovereign — True Combat Phase.]
Kael's expression became serious.
The Bone Sovereign stood several dozen meters away.
Its ancient armor moved slightly in the supernatural wind.
Its massive staff was surrounded by blue flames.
Then—
The Sovereign disappeared.
Kael's instincts screamed.
He raised the Origin Blade.
CLANG!
The staff struck.
Kael's arms shook.
The Sovereign was suddenly directly in front of him.
Not a long-range mage.
Not a distant commander.
A close-combat opponent.
Kael's feet slid backward.
The Sovereign attacked again.
Kael blocked.
A second strike.
He ducked.
A third.
He stepped sideways.
The staff changed direction in the middle of the attack.
Kael barely avoided it.
The Sovereign's movements were precise.
There was no wasted motion.
Kael narrowed his eyes.
It learned from our earlier fight too.
The staff came down.
Kael raised his sword.
BOOM!
The impact drove him into the ground.
The Sovereign whispered:
“Too slow.”
A blue flame appeared beneath Kael.
His pupils contracted.
BOOM!
Kael was thrown upward.
A spell circle appeared above him.
Kael immediately activated the V-01X.
Configuration III — Spatial Anchor.
The anchor locked onto empty space.
Kael fired.
The spatial field formed.
He changed direction in midair.
The spell missed.
Kael landed.
The Sovereign was already waiting.
Its staff moved.
Kael blocked.
Then—
A blue spear emerged from the Sovereign's shadow.
Kael's eyes widened.
He twisted.
The spear grazed his armor.
[Vanguard Armor Integrity: 4%]
Kael glanced at the armor.
“Still alive.”
The Sovereign replied calmly.
“Barely.”
Kael smiled.
“That works for me.”
Soul Fire
The Bone Sovereign raised one hand.
Blue flames surrounded Kael.
Not hot.
Not cold.
Something worse.
The flames didn't touch his body.
They touched his mana.
Kael felt his energy draining.
[Mana: 11% → 9%]
His expression changed.
“This isn't ordinary fire.”
“No.”
The Sovereign's voice echoed across the domain.
“It burns what sustains you.”
Kael immediately understood.
Soul Flame.
It wasn't attacking his body.
It was interfering with his mana circulation.
Kael switched to pure physical movement.
He stopped using Metal Control.
Stopped firing.
Stopped circulating unnecessary mana.
He rushed forward with the Origin Blade.
The Sovereign blocked.
Kael stepped inside the staff's range.
His sword moved.
SLASH!
The blade struck the Sovereign's armor.
A faint crack appeared.
The Sovereign immediately countered.
Kael ducked.
The staff passed above his head.
Kael twisted.
The Origin Blade struck the staff.
CLANG!
The Sovereign's hand tightened.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
The fracture from their previous battle was still there.
The staff wasn't fully healed.
He had found his first target.
The staff.
Kael attacked again.
The Sovereign blocked.
Kael attacked from below.
The staff moved.
Kael changed the blade's direction using Metal Control.
The Sovereign barely caught it.
Kael smiled.
“You're protecting it.”
The Sovereign's flames flickered.
“Perhaps.”
“Then it matters.”
Kael struck again.
The Sovereign retreated.
Kael advanced.
A spell circle appeared behind him.
Kael sensed it.
He jumped.
The spell detonated.
He used the explosion to propel himself forward.
The Origin Blade came down.
BOOM!
The Sovereign blocked with the staff.
The impact pushed both backward.
Kael's eyes remained fixed on the weapon.
Then—
The staff emitted a strange pulse.
The blue flames around the battlefield suddenly changed direction.
Kael froze.
Every flame moved toward one point.
The Soul Furnace.
The Sovereign had just transferred energy.
Kael immediately understood.
“The staff isn't just amplifying your magic.”
The Sovereign looked at him.
“It is connected to the Furnace.”
Kael smiled.
“So the staff is another conduit.”
The Sovereign said nothing.
That was confirmation.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
He had a plan.
The Conduit
Kael retreated.
The Sovereign didn't pursue.
Instead, it began preparing a spell.
Dozens of blue runes appeared around it.
Kael ignored them.
He looked at the staff.
At the Soul Furnace.
At the blue energy moving between them.
He activated Metal Control.
Nothing happened.
The staff wasn't ordinary metal.
It was infused with soul energy.
Kael frowned.
He needed contact.
He raised the V-01X.
Configuration III — Spatial Anchor.
The weapon fired.
The anchor appeared behind the Bone Sovereign.
The Sovereign noticed immediately.
It moved.
Kael expected it.
A second anchor appeared to the left.
The Sovereign shifted again.
A third.
Then a fourth.
Kael wasn't trying to trap the Sovereign.
He was restricting its movement.
The spell formation around the Beast became unstable.
The Sovereign finally understood.
“You are trying to interrupt the casting.”
“Exactly.”
Kael fired.
Configuration II — Mana Disruption.
The round struck the ground beside the Sovereign.
The spell formation flickered.
Kael charged.
The Sovereign cancelled the spell.
The staff swung.
Kael blocked.
CLANG!
The Sovereign's staff rotated.
Kael stepped back.
A second strike.
He ducked.
A third.
He parried.
Then—
Kael's left hand reached toward the staff.
Metal Control activated.
The staff resisted.
Not because it wasn't metal.
Because something else was inside it.
A second energy.
Something ancient.
Kael's eyes widened.
Soul energy is embedded into the weapon itself.
He pushed harder.
The staff moved one centimeter.
The Sovereign's expression changed.
“Release it.”
Kael smiled.
“So it can be controlled.”
“No.”
The Sovereign's blue flames intensified.
“It is not something you should touch.”
The staff erupted with Soul Fire.
Kael was struck directly.
His body stopped moving.
His mana dropped.
[Mana: 9% → 4%]
Kael staggered.
The Sovereign raised its staff.
Kael couldn't move.
The Soul Fire had interfered with his entire energy circulation.
The Sovereign spoke.
“You are different from the humans who came before.”
Kael struggled to remain standing.
“But you still share their weakness.”
Kael looked up.
“What weakness?”
“Your need to understand everything.”
The staff moved.
Kael died.
Five seconds later—
Kael reformed.
His breathing was heavy.
The Soul Fire surrounded his previous death location.
The Sovereign was waiting.
“You will learn.”
Kael stared at it.
“Yeah.”
He slowly stood.
“But you made one mistake.”
The Sovereign tilted its head.
Kael pointed toward the staff.
“You showed me how the Soul Fire reaches me.”
Mana Separation
Kael closed his eyes.
He didn't move.
He didn't attack.
He simply stopped circulating mana.
The Soul Fire surrounded him again.
This time—
nothing happened.
The blue flames passed around his body.
Kael opened his eyes.
The Sovereign stared.
“You separated your mana circulation.”
Kael nodded.
“I stopped using the part you're attacking.”
The Sovereign's blue flames flickered.
Kael had learned something important.
Soul Flame didn't simply burn mana.
It targeted active mana circulation.
That meant—
if he minimized his circulation and relied on stored energy—
the effect became weaker.
Kael immediately tested it.
The Origin Blade moved.
The weapon used its own resonance.
Kael didn't need to channel large quantities of mana through his body.
Metal Control remained limited.
But the sword itself responded to his bloodline.
He raised it.
The blade began glowing faintly.
The Sovereign stared.
“Interesting.”
Kael smiled.
“You're not the only one who can adapt.”
He charged.
The Sovereign blocked.
CLANG!
Kael attacked again.
The staff blocked.
Another strike.
Another.
Kael's swordsmanship became more aggressive.
He didn't use large techniques.
Didn't waste mana.
Didn't use flashy attacks.
Just precise movements.
The Sovereign's staff blocked every strike.
But Kael wasn't trying to overwhelm it.
He was forcing the weapon to defend.
Every block.
Every parry.
Every movement.
The staff transmitted Soul Fire.
And each transmission revealed something.
Kael was studying the energy flow.
Eventually—
he noticed it.
A slight delay.
The Soul Fire traveled from the Furnace—
into the staff—
through the Sovereign—
then into the spell.
But the flow wasn't continuous.
There was a tiny pause.
Less than a second.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
That is the opening.
Breaking the Staff
Kael stepped backward.
The Sovereign didn't chase.
“You discovered something.”
Kael smiled.
“Maybe.”
The Sovereign raised its staff.
Blue flames began gathering.
A giant formation appeared above the battlefield.
Kael waited.
The spell grew.
Bigger.
Bigger.
Then—
Kael moved.
Not toward the Sovereign.
Toward the staff.
The Sovereign tried to stop him.
Kael activated Spatial Anchor.
The space around the staff locked.
The Sovereign's movement slowed for half a second.
Kael's hand reached out.
Metal Control.
The staff moved.
Only slightly.
But the connection shifted.
The energy inside it became unstable.
The Soul Fire surged.
The Sovereign's spell faltered.
Kael attacked.
CRACK!
The Origin Blade struck the staff.
A fracture appeared.
The Sovereign stepped backward.
Kael attacked again.
CRACK!
Another fracture.
The Sovereign raised the staff to counter.
Kael used Metal Control.
The weapon moved away from its original angle.
The counter missed.
Kael struck.
BOOM!
The staff cracked further.
A wave of blue energy erupted.
Kael was thrown backward.
He rolled.
The Sovereign stared at its staff.
A large crack now ran across the ancient weapon.
Its blue flames became unstable.
Kael stood.
“You were right.”
The Sovereign looked at him.
“About what?”
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
“Your staff really does matter.”
The Sovereign tightened its grip.
The blue flames around it changed.
“You will not break it.”
Kael smiled.
“Let's see.”
The Staff's True Function
The Bone Sovereign suddenly stopped.
It lowered the staff.
Kael immediately became cautious.
The Sovereign spoke quietly.
“You think the staff is an amplifier.”
Kael waited.
“It is.”
“But that is not its primary purpose.”
The Sovereign turned it.
The crack became visible.
“The staff is a key.”
Kael's expression changed.
“A key to what?”
The Sovereign pointed toward the Soul Furnace.
“To my original seal.”
Kael froze.
The Sovereign continued.
“When I was imprisoned, my power was divided.”
“Body.”
“Domain.”
“Authority.”
“Origin.”
“And Soul.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“The Soul Furnace contains your Soul.”
“Yes.”
“And the staff…”
“Is the key that regulates the transfer.”
Kael looked toward the Furnace.
Everything clicked.
The staff wasn't simply powering the Sovereign.
It was allowing the Bone Sovereign to safely access the Soul Furnace without losing control.
If he broke it—
the Sovereign could lose access.
But it might also destabilize the Soul Furnace.
Kael frowned.
That was dangerous.
If he destroyed the wrong thing, the final lock could collapse.
The Sovereign seemed to read his thoughts.
“Now you understand your problem.”
Kael lowered the blade.
“You want me to destroy the staff.”
“Yes.”
“And I shouldn't.”
“No.”
Kael stared.
The Sovereign's flames flickered.
“You must break only the part that connects me to the Furnace.”
Kael's expression changed.
“That would separate you from your external Soul energy.”
“Yes.”
“And preserve the Furnace.”
“Yes.”
Kael smiled faintly.
“That's much harder.”
The Sovereign nodded.
“Which is why I chose you.”
Kael froze.
“What?”
The Sovereign remained silent.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“You chose me?”
“I allowed you to reach this domain.”
Kael's expression hardened.
“You knew I was coming.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I'd defeat the other Beasts.”
“Yes.”
“And you were waiting for me.”
“Yes.”
Kael tightened his grip.
“Why?”
The Bone Sovereign looked toward the black tower.
“Because none of us can leave.”
A pause.
“But you can.”
Kael stared.
“And if you defeat me…”
The Sovereign's voice became quieter.
“You may become the first person capable of carrying the three locks without being consumed by them.”
Kael's heart tightened.
The three Beasts weren't simply obstacles.
They were tests.
The prison was testing him too.
He didn't know who had designed the system.
Didn't know why his bloodline was connected.
But now—
he understood one thing.
The Bone Sovereign wasn't fighting merely to kill him.
It was determining whether Kael was worthy of what came next.
Kael raised his sword.
“Then stop talking.”
The Sovereign smiled.
“Very well.”
Soul Severance
The final exchange began.
The Sovereign raised its staff.
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
Blue flames filled the battlefield.
Kael charged.
The Sovereign cast.
Kael dodged.
A spell exploded.
He moved between the fragments.
The staff struck.
Kael blocked.
The connection to the Soul Furnace pulsed.
Kael watched.
There.
The pause.
Less than a second.
He waited.
The Sovereign attacked again.
Kael moved.
Another spell.
Another pulse.
Again.
Again.
He memorized the timing.
The staff swung.
Kael stepped inside.
Metal Control.
The staff moved slightly.
The Sovereign immediately resisted.
Kael didn't fight the whole weapon.
He focused on the connection point.
A metallic ring near the base of the staff.
There.
The conduit.
Kael pulled.
The Sovereign's flames surged.
Kael's arms shook.
[Metal Control synchronization: 7%]
He pushed harder.
11%.
The staff resisted.
The Sovereign attacked.
Kael died.
Five seconds later—
Kael returned.
He immediately charged.
He knew where the conduit was.
The staff struck.
Kael ducked.
The Origin Blade cut.
The Sovereign blocked.
Kael reached with Metal Control.
The ring moved.
14%.
The Soul Fire surged.
Kael ignored it.
17%.
The connection weakened.
The Sovereign's expression changed.
“No.”
Kael gritted his teeth.
“Just a little more.”
The staff attacked.
Kael blocked.
The impact forced him backward.
He died.
Reformation.
Again.
This time, Kael returned behind the Sovereign.
He reached immediately.
Metal Control.
The conduit shifted.
21%.
The Soul Furnace roared.
Blue flames erupted.
The Sovereign turned.
Kael attacked.
CLANG!
The Origin Blade struck the staff.
CRACK!
A fragment of the conduit broke.
The energy link flickered.
The System appeared.
[Soul connection destabilized.]
[Furnace synchronization: 100% → 73%]
Kael's eyes widened.
“It works.”
The Sovereign staggered.
The army around them froze.
Blue flames disappeared from thousands of skeletons.
Kael attacked again.
The staff blocked.
The connection surged.
Kael died.
Reformation.
He attacked again.
The pattern repeated.
Death.
Reformation.
Attack.
The Sovereign adapted.
It changed the position of the staff.
Kael changed his approach.
It created a Soul Barrier around the conduit.
Kael used the Origin Blade's resonance.
It changed the spell timing.
Kael changed his timing.
Every attempt became more precise.
Eventually—
the connection dropped to:
51%.
The Soul Furnace shook.
[Soul connection destabilizing.]
The Bone Sovereign took a step backward.
Kael charged.
The Sovereign raised its staff.
Kael didn't attack it.
He attacked the space beside it.
The Origin Blade cut through the metallic conduit.
BOOM!
The connection fractured.
[Soul connection: 51% → 19%]
The Bone Sovereign froze.
The remaining blue energy rushed back toward the Furnace.
The staff became dim.
Kael landed.
The Sovereign looked at the weapon.
Then at Kael.
“You learned faster than expected.”
Kael breathed heavily.
“Is that a compliment?”
“Yes.”
The Bone Sovereign raised its staff.
But this time—
the weapon didn't respond.
The Soul Furnace stopped feeding it.
The blue flames around the Sovereign dimmed.
The army collapsed.
Skeletons dropped across the wasteland.
The entire Bone Domain became silent.
Kael stared.
The third lock.
The final Beast.
He had broken its connection without destroying the Soul Furnace.
The System appeared.
[External Soul Connection Severed.]
[Bone Sovereign combat output reduced.]
[Necromantic Domain destabilized.]
[Undead Army reinforcement disabled.]
Kael exhaled.
But the Bone Sovereign remained standing.
Its blue eye flames still burned.
And now—
it smiled.
“You have finally reached the real battle.”
Kael frowned.
“What?”
The Sovereign pointed its staff toward its own chest.
The cracks in its ancient armor began opening.
Blue light emerged.
Then—
A massive blue flame appeared inside its ribcage.
Kael's expression changed.
The Sovereign spoke quietly.
“The staff was never my true source.”
The flame grew.
“The Furnace was never my true source.”
The wasteland trembled.
“My Soul is.”
The System flashed.
[WARNING.]
[Bone Sovereign internal Soul Flame awakening.]
[External restrictions removed.]
[Target combat state changing.]
Kael tightened his grip.
The Bone Sovereign's body began radiating blue light.
Its ancient armor shattered away.
Not destroyed—
discarded.
Beneath it was a towering skeletal body covered in glowing blue runes.
Its Soul Flame became enormous.
Kael stared.
The Sovereign raised one hand.
The entire Bone Domain shook.
“I allowed you to separate me from the Furnace.”
Kael's expression hardened.
“Why?”
The Sovereign's answer was simple.
“Because now…”
Its blue flames burned brighter.
“…I can fight you without the prison.”
Kael's timer continued ticking.
[Legendary Immortality Remaining: 27:41:18]
The Sovereign stepped forward.
This time—
there was no army.
No formation.
No Furnace.
No external amplification.
Only the Bone Sovereign.
Only its Soul.
And Kael.
The final battle had finally begun.
