THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 118 — The March to the Black Tower
The pocket world was collapsing.
Kael stood at the edge of the Bone Domain.
Behind him—
the Soul Chamber was still shaking.
Ahead—
the central black tower dominated the horizon.
It looked closer than before.
Not because it had moved.
Because the domains surrounding it were collapsing inward.
The Shadow Domain was shrinking.
The Verdant Domain was losing its endless forest.
The Bone Domain was becoming a sea of broken white ground.
And above everything—
a black crack stretched across the sky.
The System continued flashing warnings.
[Central Prison Breach Sequence: Initiated.]
[Containment Integrity: 29%]
[Replacement Protocol: 14%]
[Four-Principle Stabilization: Incomplete.]
Kael tightened his grip around the Darven Origin Blade.
Beside him stood the three Legendary Beasts.
The Shadow Lion.
The Verdant Serpent.
The Bone Sovereign.
They were no longer connected to the prison as forced locks.
But they were not bonded to Kael either.
They were free.
And freedom had made them something the old prison had never allowed them to be.
Individuals.
Kael looked at them.
“We need to reach the tower.”
The Shadow Lion nodded.
“Yes.”
The Verdant Serpent lowered its head.
“Before the containment reaches zero.”
The Bone Sovereign looked toward the horizon.
“Or the world beyond this one will notice the breach.”
Kael frowned.
“The world beyond?”
The Sovereign's blue Soul Flame flickered.
“This pocket world is isolated.”
“For thousands of years.”
“Yes.”
“And if the prison collapses?”
“The isolation collapses first.”
Kael understood.
Whatever was outside could potentially notice.
Monsters.
People.
The network.
Perhaps even something worse.
Kael looked toward the tower.
“Then we move.”
The Road That No Longer Exists
The four began walking.
Kael moved ahead.
The three Beasts followed.
The journey should have taken hours.
It didn't.
The land kept changing.
Paths vanished.
Mountains shifted.
Entire sections of the world simply ceased to exist.
One moment Kael was crossing a stone valley.
The next—
the valley disappeared.
A white void replaced it.
Kael stopped immediately.
“Don't move.”
The three Beasts halted.
A section of reality ahead of them flickered.
The Shadow Lion's crimson eyes narrowed.
“That's not destruction.”
Kael activated Soul Sight.
The area became clearer.
There was no terrain there.
No mana.
No life.
The space itself had been removed.
Kael's expression hardened.
“The prison is deleting unstable regions.”
The Bone Sovereign nodded.
“Containment correction.”
“It's removing anything it cannot stabilize.”
The Verdant Serpent looked toward the black tower.
“Then we need to move faster.”
Kael nodded.
They changed direction.
But the next obstacle appeared almost immediately.
A black line formed across the ground.
Then another.
Then dozens.
Kael stopped.
The lines began moving.
Metallic figures emerged from the ground.
They had no faces.
No weapons.
Only smooth black bodies covered in the five-path symbol.
The System activated.
[Containment Correction Construct detected.]
[Level: 63]
[Grade: Calamity]
[Type: Autonomous Correction Entity]
[Objective: Remove incompatible variables.]
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“Incompatible variables.”
He looked at the three Beasts.
“They're targeting us.”
The Shadow Lion growled.
The constructs moved.
The Correction Army
The first construct charged.
Kael stepped forward.
The Darven Origin Blade collided with its arm.
CLANG!
The construct barely moved.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
“Level sixty-three.”
The second attacked.
Kael jumped.
A third followed.
He rolled.
The Shadow Lion entered the battlefield.
Dark energy erupted.
A wave of shadow struck the nearest construct.
It staggered.
The Verdant Serpent followed.
Green energy wrapped around another.
The Bone Sovereign raised one hand.
A Soul blade appeared.
Three constructs were forced backward.
Kael looked at them.
They were fighting together naturally.
No commands.
No hierarchy.
No prison controlling them.
That was the difference.
The old system had forced the Beasts into fixed roles.
Now they were making choices.
Kael smiled.
“Interesting.”
A correction construct attacked him again.
Kael moved.
The Origin Blade cut across its body.
The weapon didn't destroy it.
Instead—
the construct changed.
Its body split into two.
Kael's eyes widened.
“It adapts.”
The Shadow Lion roared.
“Not like you.”
Kael watched carefully.
The construct wasn't evolving.
It was correcting.
Every time it was attacked—
it changed its structure to resist that specific attack.
That was dangerous.
Kael switched tactics immediately.
“Don't attack the same way twice!”
The Shadow Lion understood.
It changed from direct attacks to shadow movement.
The Serpent stopped using energy and attacked with physical force.
The Bone Sovereign switched to Soul pressure.
Kael used Metal Control.
Four completely different methods.
The correction constructs struggled.
Their adaptation couldn't keep pace with changing principles.
Kael smiled.
“That is the weakness.”
He raised his hand.
“Change.”
The Origin Blade flashed.
A construct attacked.
Kael switched from swordsmanship to Metal Control.
Then immediately to ranged fire.
Then back to the sword.
The construct couldn't settle on a counter.
Another construct adapted to the Shadow Lion's attack.
The Lion changed direction.
The Serpent struck.
The construct adapted.
The Bone Sovereign attacked from another angle.
The correction system became overloaded.
The System appeared.
[Correction Network synchronization reduced.]
[94% → 72%]
Kael's eyes sharpened.
The constructs weren't independent.
They were still linked to the network.
He pointed.
“Break the synchronization!”
The Bone Sovereign immediately understood.
Its Soul energy spread.
The Shadow Lion's domain covered the ground.
The Serpent's natural energy filled the gaps.
Kael connected the three with Metal Control.
Four forces.
Four principles.
The correction constructs froze.
[Correction Network: 72% → 41%]
Kael stepped forward.
“Now.”
The four attacked simultaneously.
The battlefield erupted.
One construct shattered.
Then another.
Then several more.
The remaining constructs withdrew.
They didn't retreat because they were afraid.
They were calculating.
The Bone Sovereign watched them.
“They're going to report.”
Kael looked toward the tower.
“Then let's make the report interesting.”
Four Against the Prison
They continued.
The closer they came to the tower—
the stronger the correction constructs became.
Level 65.
Level 68.
Level 71.
Some used shadow.
Some used nature.
Others copied Soul-based attacks.
They weren't ordinary monsters.
They were manifestations of the old network's attempt to correct reality.
And every time Kael discovered one method—
the next construct changed.
Kael couldn't rely on one technique.
So he stopped trying.
Instead, he rotated his entire fighting style.
Sword.
Metal.
Firearms.
Movement.
Spatial Anchors.
Soul Sight.
Administrator Authority.
Even physical combat.
The three Beasts did the same.
Shadow Lion attacked from darkness.
The Serpent reshaped the terrain.
The Bone Sovereign altered Soul pressure.
The four fought independently.
But their attacks overlapped.
The result was unpredictable.
The old network couldn't categorize them.
That was exactly what Kael needed.
Eventually—
they reached the foot of the tower.
The correction constructs stopped.
Kael looked up.
The tower was enormous.
Its surface was completely black.
No doors.
No windows.
No visible entrance.
Five symbols were engraved around the base.
The same five principles.
Kael approached.
The symbols reacted.
Shadow.
The Shadow Lion's symbol glowed.
Nature.
The Verdant Serpent's symbol glowed.
Death.
The Bone Sovereign's symbol glowed.
Then—
the fifth symbol.
Choice.
Kael's symbol remained dark.
Kael frowned.
“Why isn't mine activating?”
The System answered.
[Voluntary principle synchronization required.]
Kael looked at the three Beasts.
Then at himself.
“We need the bonds.”
The Bone Sovereign nodded.
“The tower will not recognize us as a unified stabilizing system until the bonds are voluntary.”
Kael stepped forward.
“Then we'll make them.”
The First Bond
The Shadow Lion walked toward Kael.
Its crimson eyes met his.
“No contract.”
Kael paused.
“What?”
“No forced contract.”
The Lion lowered its head.
“If I become your companion, it will be by choice.”
Kael nodded.
“Agreed.”
The System appeared.
[Shadow Lion voluntary bond available.]
[Condition: Mutual recognition.]
Kael frowned.
“What does that mean?”
The Lion answered.
“You must recognize what I am.”
Kael stared.
“A Legendary Beast.”
“No.”
The Lion's voice became deeper.
“Not a weapon.”
Kael understood.
The old Darven inheritance had given him powerful companions.
But if he treated them as tools—
the Fifth Path would reject the bond.
Kael looked into the Shadow Lion's eyes.
“You're not my weapon.”
The Lion remained silent.
“You're not something I own.”
Its crimson aura flickered.
“You're an ally.”
The Lion lowered its head.
The System flashed.
[Mutual recognition accepted.]
[Shadow Lion bond compatibility: 9% → 31%]
Kael's eyes widened.
“Thirty-one percent?”
The Lion's crimson energy flowed toward Kael.
A mark appeared on the back of his hand.
Not a chain.
A symbol.
[Voluntary Beast Bond established.]
The tower reacted.
The Shadow symbol lit up completely.
One out of four.
Kael smiled.
“Good.”
The Second Bond
The Verdant Serpent approached.
Its enormous body curved around the ruined ground.
“I have another condition.”
Kael looked up.
“What?”
“If you ever order me to protect you when retreat is the correct choice…”
Kael blinked.
“You won't listen?”
“No.”
Kael smiled.
“Fair.”
The Serpent continued.
“And if your decision would destroy the balance of the environment unnecessarily…”
“I already know.”
Kael looked at the forest disappearing in the distance.
“I'll listen.”
The Serpent's eyes narrowed.
“You answer quickly.”
“I've learned the cost of ignoring advice.”
The Verdant Serpent lowered its head.
The System appeared.
[Mutual recognition accepted.]
[Verdant Serpent bond compatibility: 14% → 34%]
Green light surrounded Kael.
A second mark appeared.
[Voluntary Beast Bond established.]
The tower reacted.
The Nature symbol activated.
Two.
The Third Bond
The Bone Sovereign remained still.
Kael looked toward it.
“What about you?”
The Sovereign shook its head.
“I do not want to be your weapon.”
“I know.”
“I do not want to be your servant.”
“I know.”
The Sovereign looked directly at him.
“And I do not want to lose my freedom again.”
Kael's expression became serious.
“You won't.”
The Sovereign stared.
“You cannot promise that.”
Kael thought for a moment.
Then—
“I can't control what happens to the world.”
The Sovereign listened.
“But I can promise something else.”
“What?”
“I'll never force you to stay.”
The Sovereign's Soul Flame flickered.
“If you ever decide to leave…”
Kael continued.
“…you leave.”
Silence.
Then—
the Bone Sovereign laughed quietly.
“That's an unusual contract.”
“It's not a contract.”
Kael smiled.
“It's a choice.”
The Sovereign's flames brightened.
The System appeared.
[Mutual recognition accepted.]
[Bone Sovereign bond compatibility: 21% → 39%]
Blue light spread across Kael's hand.
A third mark appeared.
[Voluntary Beast Bond established.]
The tower reacted.
The Death symbol illuminated.
Three.
Only the fifth symbol remained dark.
Choice.
Kael looked at it.
Then—
the tower spoke.
Not a voice from within.
A System message.
[Four-Principle Stabilization requires voluntary choice from all participating entities.]
Kael froze.
He looked at his three companions.
The Shadow Lion had chosen.
The Verdant Serpent had chosen.
The Bone Sovereign had chosen.
But one participant remained.
Kael.
The fourth principle wasn't automatically his.
It had to be chosen.
The System continued.
[Host choice required.]
Kael stared.
“What does it want me to choose?”
Erynd's voice echoed from behind.
“Whether you are willing to be part of the system you're creating.”
Kael turned.
Erynd's projection stood at the tower's entrance.
Kael frowned.
“Didn't you say the Fifth Path rejects fixed systems?”
“Yes.”
“Then why do I have to join one?”
“You don't.”
Kael waited.
“You must choose whether to participate.”
Kael looked at the tower.
The three Beast marks on his hand.
Then—
the Fifth Path symbol.
He understood.
The old network forced beings into roles.
The new system required consent.
That was the difference.
Kael raised his hand.
“I choose.”
The fifth symbol began glowing.
[Choice recognized.]
[Four-Principle Stabilization initiated.]
The tower shook.
The four symbols connected.
Shadow.
Nature.
Death.
Choice.
A massive circular formation appeared around the tower.
The pocket world stabilized.
The black crack across the sky stopped spreading.
The System flashed.
[Central Containment Integrity: 29% → 41%]
Kael's eyes widened.
It increased.
The Bone Sovereign looked toward the tower.
“It worked.”
Kael exhaled.
“For now.”
Then—
the tower opened.
Not a doorway.
The entire front of the structure simply dissolved.
Darkness appeared within.
At the center stood a throne.
But this one was different.
It wasn't the black throne from the white world.
It was enormous.
Ancient.
Covered in countless symbols.
And sitting upon it—
was a human figure.
Kael immediately recognized the silver eyes.
But this wasn't Erynd.
This wasn't Auren.
The figure stood.
The entire tower shook.
The three Legendary Beasts became alert.
Kael raised the Origin Blade.
The figure spoke.
“So the locks have chosen freedom.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“Who are you?”
The figure stepped forward.
Black energy surrounded its body.
“I am the Administrator of the original system.”
Kael froze.
The figure continued.
“And I have been waiting…”
Its silver eyes focused on Kael.
“…for someone to break it.”
Kael's System immediately erupted.
[Unknown Administrator detected.]
[Authority Level: ???]
[Classification: ???]
[Threat Assessment: Impossible.]
Kael's expression became serious.
The three Beasts moved beside him.
The Shadow Lion growled.
The Verdant Serpent raised its head.
The Bone Sovereign lifted its hand.
The figure looked at them.
Then smiled.
“You have done what I could not.”
Kael stared.
“What?”
The figure's eyes moved toward the four glowing principles.
“You replaced the prison.”
Kael tightened his grip.
The figure continued.
“But you have made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
The Administrator's smile disappeared.
“You assumed the system wanted to keep the prisoner inside.”
Kael froze.
The tower trembled.
The figure looked toward the darkness below.
“It doesn't.”
A massive black eye opened beneath the throne.
The central prison shook.
[Central Containment Integrity: 41% → 34%]
Kael's expression changed.
The Administrator spoke one final sentence.
“The system wasn't built to imprison the entity.”
“It was built…”
The eye opened wider.
“…to feed it.”
The pocket world went silent.
And for the first time—
the four principles turned toward the true enemy beneath the tower.
