THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 38 — The Guardian Beneath the Mountain

  • Next Chapter

The rain continued through the night.

Kael remained inside the cave, staring at the map of the Verdant Territory.

One guardian had fallen.

Two remained.

But after meeting the second guardian, Kael understood something.

The guardians weren't simply powerful monsters protecting the Basilisk.

They each protected something different.

The Verdant Fang Ravager had protected the western territory.

The Verdant Mountain Wyrm protected the ancient structure beneath the mountain.

Which meant the third guardian probably protected something else.

Kael drew three circles on the map.

"Three guardians."

He tapped the first.

"Western territory."

Then the second.

"Mountain."

His finger stopped.

"And the third?"

Nightfang remained silent.

Kael looked at him.

"You know something."

"I know very little."

"That's not the same as knowing nothing."

Nightfang sighed.

"The third guardian doesn't stay in one place."

Kael's expression changed.

"Then where does it go?"

"Wherever the territory is weakest."

Kael stared at the map.

"So it's not protecting a location."

Nightfang shook his head.

"It's protecting the territory itself."

Kael slowly smiled.

"Then finding it will be harder."

"Much harder."

The Strange Pattern

Kael spent the next four days doing something he had never done before.

He didn't hunt.

He didn't challenge monsters.

He studied.

He walked along the outer edge of the Verdant Territory, placing small metal markers at carefully selected locations.

He recorded mana fluctuations.

Monster migration.

Changes in vegetation.

Territorial pressure.

Regeneration patterns.

Everything.

The results were strange.

Every few hours, one region of the forest experienced a sudden increase in mana.

Then another.

Then another.

Kael marked each location.

By the fourth day, a pattern appeared.

He stared at the map.

"The territory isn't expanding."

Nightfang looked over his shoulder.

"No."

Kael connected the markers.

"It's moving."

The territory itself was shifting.

Not randomly.

It was responding to something.

Kael looked toward the center of the forest.

"The Basilisk isn't controlling the territory."

His eyes narrowed.

"Something beneath it is."

The Third Path

That night, Kael returned to the cave.

He placed the black metal fragment beside the unknown green metal from earlier.

Nothing happened.

Then he placed the fragment beside the ancient inheritance crystal.

The reaction was immediate.

[Resonance detected.]

[Ancient Verdant Energy detected.]

Kael frowned.

A faint image appeared above the crystal.

Three symbols.

A lion.

A serpent.

A skeleton.

Below them was another symbol.

A hand.

The same damaged hand he had seen in the ancient sealing structure.

Kael whispered:

"Darven."

The image changed.

The three beasts appeared inside enormous chains.

But the chains weren't attached to the beasts.

They were attached to the territory.

Kael's eyes widened.

"The seal isn't just imprisoning them."

Nightfang stared at the projection.

"It is using their territories."

Kael nodded.

"That's why the mana network keeps moving."

The System suddenly appeared.

[Ancient inheritance structure detected.]

[Partial information recovered.]

[Three Legendary Beast Territories function as secondary sealing networks.]

[Territory Guardians maintain network stability.]

[Warning: Destroying too many guardians may destabilize the seal.]

Kael froze.

"What?"

He stared at the final message.

Destroying the guardians could destabilize the seal.

He immediately looked toward the map.

The first guardian was dead.

The second guardian remained.

And the third—

Kael suddenly understood.

"The Basilisk isn't protecting the guardians."

Nightfang looked at him.

"It's protecting the seal."

A Difficult Decision

Kael sat silently.

He had assumed the Territory Trial meant defeating all three guardians.

But now he wasn't sure.

If killing them destabilized the ancient seal, what would happen when all three were defeated?

Would the Legendary Beasts become stronger?

Would the territories collapse?

Or—

Would something else escape?

Kael opened the System.

[Territory Trial — Verdant]

Progress: 1/3 Guardians defeated

Secondary Objective: Discover source of territorial authority

Hidden Condition: Unknown

Kael stared at the words.

"The trial isn't asking me to kill them."

Nightfang's ears moved.

"What?"

Kael pointed at the screen.

"It only says I have to complete the trial."

He looked toward the forest.

"Maybe defeating the guardians is only one way."

A sudden vibration ran through the cave.

The black crystal flickered.

Then—

a voice emerged from it.

Not his father's.

Something older.

"A Darven who destroys what he does not understand..."

The voice paused.

"...is no different from the enemies who hunted us."

Kael immediately stood.

"Who are you?"

No answer.

The crystal went dark.

Kael stared at it.

His expression became serious.

Someone was watching.

Or something was.

The Mountain Moves

The next morning, the entire eastern forest shook.

BOOM.

Birds fled the trees.

Monsters screamed.

The ground moved beneath Kael's feet.

Nightfang immediately stood.

"The mountain."

Kael looked toward the distant peak.

A massive green glow had appeared around it.

Then the System activated.

[Territorial instability detected.]

[Verdant sealing network damaged.]

[Secondary guardian has begun forced movement.]

[Warning: Guardian activity increasing.]

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"The Wyrm."

A roar echoed across the forest.

It wasn't a normal roar.

It carried mana.

Every monster in the territory froze.

Then they began moving toward the mountain.

Kael understood.

"The Basilisk is calling everything back."

Nightfang nodded.

"Something has happened."

Kael immediately picked up his weapons.

"Then we're going."

Nightfang stared at him.

"You just said you weren't going to fight the Wyrm."

"I'm not."

Kael loaded the PR-01.

"I'm going to find out what caused this."

The Ancient Chamber

Kael reached the mountain several hours later.

The situation was worse than he expected.

The Wyrm wasn't attacking the forest.

It was fighting something beneath the mountain.

Every few seconds, the earth erupted.

Stone shattered.

Mana surged upward.

Kael remained hidden behind a ridge.

He activated Threat Analysis.

The System struggled.

[Verdant Mountain Wyrm]

Level: 44

Grade: Lord

Potential: Overlord

Condition: Injured]

Mana: 61%

Guardian Authority: Unstable

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"Injured?"

Something had actually wounded a Level 44 Lord.

Then the ground beneath the Wyrm cracked.

A black hand emerged.

Kael froze.

Another hand followed.

Then another.

Something was climbing out of the underground chamber.

The Wyrm roared and struck it.

The creature below blocked the attack.

Kael couldn't see its entire body.

Only its silhouette.

But he recognized the energy.

Crimson.

Ancient.

Darven.

The System flashed.

[Unknown entity detected.]

[Level: ???]

[Grade: ???]

[Classification: ???]

[Threat: Unmeasurable]

[Warning: Do not engage.]

Kael didn't move.

For once, he obeyed immediately.

The creature slowly turned.

Even from hundreds of meters away—

Kael felt its gaze.

Then it spoke.

"Another one."

Kael's blood ran cold.

The Wyrm attacked again.

The mysterious entity disappeared beneath the earth.

The mountain became silent.

The Wyrm remained standing.

Barely.

Kael stared at the scene.

"That wasn't the Basilisk."

Nightfang shook his head.

"No."

Kael looked at the ancient chamber.

"Then what was it?"

Neither of them knew.

But Kael had learned something more important.

The Verdant Territory wasn't simply a hunting ground.

It was hiding something.

Something that even a Level 44 Territory Guardian was afraid of.

The Choice

Kael returned to his cave before sunset.

He opened his status.

Level: 28

Strength: 24

Agility: 32

Vitality: 30

Intelligence: 30

Metal Control: Mastery Stage III

Bloodline Progress: 12%

Beast Path Compatibility: 4%

He stared at the numbers.

Level 50 still seemed impossibly far away.

But for the first time, he wasn't thinking about reaching it quickly.

He was thinking about surviving everything between Level 28 and Level 50.

He opened his notebook.

Under the second guardian, he wrote:

Verdant Mountain Wyrm

Do not fight yet.

Protects ancient underground structure.

Territorial seal unstable.

Unknown entity beneath mountain.

Possible connection to Darven inheritance.

Then he added another line.

The third guardian must know something.

Kael closed the notebook.

He looked toward the forest.

"Two guardians remain."

Nightfang nodded.

"But now we know something else."

Kael looked at him.

"What?"

Nightfang's golden eyes narrowed.

"The guardians may not be your real enemies."

A long silence followed.

Kael slowly smiled.

"Then I'll stop hunting them."

He stood.

"I'll make them come to me."

Far away, deep within the Verdant Territory—

the Verdant Horned Basilisk lifted its head.

It had sensed the disturbance beneath the mountain.

For the first time in thousands of years—

the ancient seal had been touched from the inside.

And the Territory Lord understood something Kael did not.

The thing beneath the mountain had not awakened because of Kael.

It had awakened because Kael had entered the territory.
