THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 57 — The Entity on the Network
The forest had gone silent.
Not the ordinary silence of the night.
This was different.
The kind of silence that appeared when something dangerous entered the territory of every creature nearby.
Kael stood on the ridge overlooking the ruined battlefield.
The Verdant Horned Basilisk remained below.
The Verdant Fallen Guardian stood at Kael's side.
And inside Kael's mind—
the network was still visible.
Green pathways.
Crimson pathways.
Black foreign lines.
And one enormous presence moving through them.
The System continued displaying the same warning.
[Unknown Entity detected.]
[Level: ???]
[Grade: ???]
[Threat: Unmeasurable]
Kael stared at the path.
The entity wasn't moving like a person.
It wasn't using the network as a road.
It was moving through the mana itself.
Like a shadow traveling through veins.
Kael's expression hardened.
“What is it?”
The Guardian looked toward the eastern forest.
“I don't know.”
Kael glanced at him.
“You've been part of this network for thousands of years.”
“And that does not mean I have seen everything inside it.”
The Guardian's silver eyes narrowed.
“But I recognize that movement.”
Kael's expression changed.
“From what?”
The Guardian answered quietly.
“Something that should not be here.”
Kael closed his eyes.Network Sense.
The forest disappeared.
The underground network appeared.
He could see the foreign signal moving beneath Ashen Ridge.
The path was clear.
Black.
Thin.
Fast.
Kael followed it with his perception.
Then stopped.
The signal divided.
One branch went south.
One continued east.
One—
turned back toward the mountain.
Kael's eyes opened.
“It split.”
The Guardian nodded.
“Then we cannot assume it is one entity.”
Kael shook his head.
“No.”
He pointed toward the map.
“It's one entity.”
The Guardian frowned.
Kael continued.
“The southern signal isn't moving independently.”
He traced the route.
“It's a decoy.”
The Guardian looked closer.
Kael followed the black thread.
“The entity is using the network itself to create multiple signatures.”
The Guardian's expression hardened.
“Then it is intelligent.”
“Very.”
Kael looked toward the eastern branch.
“And it's trying to make us chase the wrong path.”
The Basilisk finally spoke.
“Then don't chase it.”
Kael turned.
“Why?”
“Because it wants you to follow.”
The Basilisk's enormous eyes remained fixed on the forest.
“Something that intelligent doesn't run toward an unknown opponent without a reason.”
Kael nodded slowly.
“So what do we do?”
The Basilisk lowered its head.
“Wait.”
Kael stared at it.
“For what?”
“The moment when it believes you have stopped looking.”
Kael hated waiting. But he understood the logic.
If the entity expected pursuit, following immediately would reveal his methods.
So instead—
he did nothing.
He returned to the battlefield.
He repaired his damaged weapons.
PR-02 had suffered another crack.
AR-03V's mana channel had become unstable.
His katana remained intact.
He rebuilt the damaged components.
Then he changed them.
The new PR-02 received a reinforced receiver.
The Armament Bond channel was widened.
The rifle could now maintain its bonded form under stronger interference.
AR-03V received a separate stabilization chamber.
Kael also modified his Mana-Breaker ammunition.
The old rounds were designed to interrupt a single target's mana circulation.
That wouldn't be enough against something traveling through a network.
So Kael created a new variation.
Darven Network-Breaker Round — Prototype.
It couldn't destroy a network.
It couldn't sever a major connection.
But if fired into a foreign anchor or artificial mana pathway—
it could temporarily interrupt the connection.
Kael examined the round.
“One tool.”
He placed it in a separate magazine.
“For one problem.”
That principle had kept him alive.
He wasn't trying to make one weapon capable of everything.
He was making the right weapon for the right problem.
Six hours passed. The false signal continued moving.
Kael watched it.
South.
Then west.
Then north.
Always just far enough ahead.
He didn't move.
The Guardian eventually spoke.
“It's slowing down.”
Kael opened his eyes.
“Exactly.”
The Basilisk raised its head.
The black signal had stopped.
Not disappeared.
Stopped.
It was waiting.
Kael smiled faintly.
“Now.”
The Guardian looked at him.
“You think it knows?”
“No.”
Kael stood.
“I think it thinks we're still watching the decoy.”
He activated Network Sense.
The eastern branch remained active.
The southern branch remained active.
But—
something small had changed.
A tiny disturbance.
So small that he would have missed it before learning Network Sense.
A single black pulse appeared beneath the battlefield.
Then vanished.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
“There.”
He placed his hand on the ground.
Metal Control.
Nothing.
The disturbance wasn't metal.
He switched to mana perception.
Still faint.
Then Darven Authority.
The pulse became visible.
A thin black thread.
Moving upward.
Kael's expression hardened.
“It never left.”
The Guardian immediately understood.
“The entity wasn't traveling east.”
“No.”
Kael looked beneath his feet.
“It was already here.”
The ground cracked.Not explosively.
Quietly.
A thin black line spread across the soil.
Kael immediately stepped back.
The Basilisk raised its head.
The Guardian brought up his weapon.
The line widened.
Something emerged.
Not a human.
Not a beast.
A shape formed from dark mist and metallic fragments.
Its body was vaguely humanoid.
Tall.
Thin.
Its limbs looked incomplete.
Pieces of ancient metal floated inside the darkness instead of forming a solid body.
Its face had no features.
Only two pale silver eyes.
The System activated.
[Threat Analysis.]
[Analysis Failed.]
[Entity type: Unknown.]
[Level: ???]
[Grade: ???]
[Threat: Unmeasurable]
Kael stared.
The entity looked at him.
Then—
it spoke.
“Administrator.”
Kael's grip tightened.
“You came looking for me.”
The creature tilted its head.
“No.”
Kael frowned.
“I came looking for you.”
The entity's voice was strangely calm.
“You misunderstand.”
It raised one hand.
The black network beneath the battlefield pulsed.
“I have been looking for you since before you were born.”
Kael's expression changed.
The Guardian stepped forward.
“What are you?”
The entity looked at him.
“I remember you.”
The Guardian froze.
“You shouldn't.”
“I remember when you still served the network.”
The entity's silver eyes shifted back to Kael.
“And I remember the last Darven.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“You knew my family?”
The entity didn't answer.
Instead—
it raised its hand.
Black metallic fragments appeared around it.
Kael immediately activated Darven Armament.
PR-02 floated beside him.
AR-03V rose.
The katana remained in his hand.
The entity smiled.
“Three.”
Kael's expression hardened.
The same number.
The same limit the Ashen Warforged had identified.
But this creature didn't sound impressed.
It sounded curious.
“You have awakened the same bond.”
Kael stared.
“The same?”
“As the first.”
Silence.
The first administrator.
The first Darven.
The entity knew him.
Maybe it had fought him.
Maybe it had seen him.
Kael's grip tightened.
“What happened to the first administrator?”
The entity's head tilted.
“He failed.”
“How?”
“He attempted to control what should only have been repaired.”
Kael remembered the inscription.
Never allow the Darven to command the entire network.
His eyes narrowed.
“The network destroyed him.”
“No.”
The entity stepped forward.
“He destroyed himself.”
Kael didn't like the answer.“Then why are you here?”
The entity raised its hand.
“I wanted to see whether you would make the same mistake.”
Kael's eyes sharpened.
“So this is a test.”
“Yes.”
“Who sent you?”
The entity laughed softly.
“No one.”
That answer bothered Kael even more.
It wasn't a servant.
It wasn't following the Severance Order.
It had its own objective.
And that objective involved the network.
The entity moved.
Kael barely reacted.
CLANG!
A dark metallic blade appeared in its hand and struck his katana.
The force sent Kael backward.
The Guardian attacked.
Green energy surged.
The entity dissolved.
The attack passed through empty mist.
It reappeared behind the Guardian.
BOOM!
The Guardian was thrown several meters.
Kael's eyes widened.
“It's phasing through attacks.”
The entity attacked again.
Kael activated Armament Recall.
PR-02 appeared in his hand.
BANG!
The round passed through the creature's torso.
No impact.
No reaction.
Kael immediately changed ammunition.
Network-Breaker Round.
He loaded it.
The entity appeared again.
Kael fired.
BANG!
The round struck.
The black body flickered.
For the first time—
the creature became solid.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
“Got you.”
The entity looked down at the impact point.
Then smiled.
“Interesting.”
Kael fired again.
The entity moved.
The round missed.
It dissolved into the ground.
Kael activated Network Sense.
The entity was moving through the network again.
He could see it.
The black thread traveled beneath him.
Kael fired PR-02 into the ground.
BANG!
The round struck an underground connection.
The entity emerged abruptly.
Kael was already waiting.
Katana.
SHING!
The blade struck its shoulder.
The dark body became solid.
A crack appeared.
The creature staggered.
The Guardian attacked.
A wave of green energy slammed into it.
The entity was thrown backward.
It recovered in midair.
Kael looked at the crack.
It was healing.
But slowly.
“Network-Breaker makes you physical.”
The entity smiled.
“And you learn quickly.”
Kael expected another attack.Instead—
the entity retreated.
Not away.
Down.
It sank into the ground.
Kael immediately activated Network Sense.
The black signal raced toward one of the restored network sections.
“The Western Node.”
The Guardian realized it.
“It wants to use the connection.”
Kael shook his head.
“No.”
He could see the path.
The entity wasn't moving toward the Western Node.
It was moving through it.
Using the repaired Fourth Path.
Toward—
the mountain.
Kael's eyes widened.
“It wants the deepest path.”
The entity's voice echoed through the network.
“You repaired it for me.”
Kael clenched his teeth.
“No.”
He raised his hand.
The network responded.
Crimson energy spread through the western connection.
Kael changed the pathway.
The black thread suddenly encountered a dead end.
The entity stopped.
For the first time—
it sounded surprised.
“You can reroute it.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“I'm the Administrator.”
Silence.
Then the creature laughed.
“Good.”
Kael frowned.
The entity vanished.
The network stabilized.
Kael remained alert.
“What was that?”
The Guardian approached.
The Basilisk watched from a distance.
Kael looked at both of them.
“It wanted me to do that.”
The Guardian's expression changed.
“Why?”
Kael stared at the network.
“To see whether I would use Administrator authority to control the network.”
Silence.
Kael slowly realized the truth.
The creature had engineered the entire encounter.
The decoy signals.
The appearance.
The attack.
Even the route toward the Western Node.
Everything had been designed to force Kael into using the Fourth Path.
And Kael had done exactly that.
The System appeared.
[Administrator authority usage detected.]
[Fourth Path synchronization efficiency increased.]
Kael's expression hardened.
A second message appeared.
[Unknown Entity objective partially identified.]
[Observation.]
Kael stared.
“Observation…”
The entity hadn't been trying to kill him.
It had been studying him.
And worse—
it had succeeded.
The entity's voice returned. Not from the ground.
Not from the network.
Everywhere.
“You are different from the first.”
Kael raised his head.
“Then tell me how.”
“You understand limitations.”
Kael said nothing.
“You don't attempt to overpower every problem.”
The entity continued.
“You study.”
“You prepare.”
“You adapt.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“Why are you telling me this?”
A pause.
“Because when the other two anchors activate…”
Kael's expression changed.
“The network won't be the thing you need to protect.”
The entity's voice became quieter.
“The network will be the thing trying to protect itself.”
Kael frowned.
“What does that mean?”
No answer.
Then—
[Foreign Entity has disconnected from the network.]
The black signal vanished.
Completely.
Kael stared at the empty map.
The Guardian looked unsettled.
“It left.”
Kael nodded.
“But it wasn't defeated.”
“No.”
Kael looked toward the mountain.
“It got what it wanted.”
The System appeared again.[Network anomaly detected.]
Kael read the message.
[Foreign Entity has copied Administrator Authority signature.]
His expression hardened.
“What?”
The Guardian stepped closer.
“What happened?”
Kael looked at him.
“It took a copy of my authority.”
Silence.
The Basilisk's expression changed.
“That is impossible.”
Kael shook his head.
“It just happened.”
He opened Network Sense.
A faint black imitation of the crimson path now existed elsewhere.
Not connected.
Not active.
But present.
Someone had copied his Administrator signature.
That meant—
the enemy could potentially fool parts of the network.
Kael closed his fist.
The problem had just become much larger.
He wasn't merely fighting people who wanted access to the network.
Now something else knew how to imitate him.
The Guardian looked toward the mountain.
“We need to reach the next section before it does.”
Kael nodded.
“Not Ashen Ridge.”
“No.”
“The eastern section.”
“Yes.”
Kael looked toward the forest.
The eastern network was still untouched.
That made it the next logical target.
But there was another problem.
The System displayed one final warning.
[Unknown Entity activity detected.]
[Location: Eastern Territory.]
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“So it already moved.”
The Guardian drew his weapon.
The Basilisk raised its head.
Kael looked at both of them.
“We go now.”
The forest darkened.
Far in the east—
something enormous opened its eyes.
And unlike the unknown entity—
this presence did not travel through the network.
It was waiting beside it.
Guarding it.
A new notification appeared.
[Eastern Territory guardian-class entity detected.]
[Level: 44]
[Grade: Lord]
[Potential: Overlord]
[Classification: Territory Guardian]
Kael stared at the final line.
Another guardian.
One that had never appeared in the old records.
And it was standing directly on the path they needed to restore.
