THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 59 — The Eastern Guardian

  • Next Chapter

The eastern forest began to change after several hours of travel.

The trees grew taller.

Their trunks became unnaturally straight.

The ground rose gradually until the forest opened into a vast stone plateau.

Wind swept across it.

Cold.

Sharp.

Constant.

Kael stopped.

The Network Sense inside his mind immediately reacted.

One of the remaining Fourth Path sections was here.

But the network wasn't damaged in the same way as the western section.

The crimson route ended at a massive structure beneath the plateau.

And directly above that structure—

something was waiting.

Kael looked up.

Nothing.

Then the wind stopped.

Completely.

The Guardian beside him raised its head.

“It is here.”

Kael's hand moved toward his katana.

“Your description?”

“I have never seen it.”

Kael frowned.

“You've been part of the network for thousands of years.”

“Not this section.”

The Guardian looked toward the plateau.

“This guardian was created after I was taken.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“So it's younger.”

“Yes.”

“Then why is it classified as a Territory Guardian?”

“Because the network created it for the same purpose.”

Kael activated Threat Analysis.

[Territory Guardian detected.]

[Name: Verdant Gale Warden]

Level: 44

Grade: Lord

Potential: Overlord

Classification: Territory Guardian

Traits:

  • Gale Dominion
  • Wind Step
  • Verdant Armor
  • Mana Absorption
  • Territory Suppression
  • Guardian Authority
  • Aerial Sovereignty

Intelligence: Extremely High

Kael stared.

“Wind.”

The Guardian nodded.

“Then fighting it on the ground would be a mistake.”

Kael smiled slightly.

“Good thing I don't intend to.”

The wind returned.

Stronger.

A shadow crossed the plateau.

Kael looked up.

Something enormous descended from the clouds.

The creature landed without touching the ground.

It hovered several meters above the plateau.

Its body resembled a massive bird of prey, but its proportions were far beyond any natural creature.

Its wings stretched nearly twenty meters.

Dark green feathers covered its body, each one reinforced with thin metallic-looking edges.

Two long horns curved backward from its skull.

Its eyes were bright silver.

Green wind spiraled around its body.

The System continued analyzing.

[Territory Guardian confirmed.]

[Guardian Authority active.]

Kael didn't raise his weapon.

The creature stared at him.

Then its voice entered his mind.

“You carry the Administrator's mark.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“I do.”

“You have restored two sections.”

“Yes.”

“You have also killed three Territory Lords.”

Kael didn't deny it.

The Warden descended slightly.

“You were not created to do that.”

Kael frowned.

“I wasn't created at all.”

The Warden's eyes sharpened.

“Correct.”

It moved closer.

“You chose this path.”

Kael nodded.

“Yes.”

The creature studied him for several seconds.

Then—

the wind exploded.

Kael's instincts screamed.

He raised the katana.

BOOM!

A wall of compressed air struck him.

Kael was thrown backward.

He dug his feet into the stone.

The Guardian beside him was also forced back.

Kael looked up.

The Warden remained motionless in the sky.

It had not even moved its wings.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“First test?”

The Warden answered calmly.

“First question.”

“What question?”

“Are you capable of standing?”

Kael smiled.

Then raised PR-02.

“Apparently.”

Kael fired.

BANG!

The round crossed the distance.

The Warden tilted one wing.

A spiral of wind intercepted the bullet.

The projectile stopped.

Not slowed.

Stopped.

Then fell.

Kael's expression changed.

Wind compression.

He fired again.

Three rounds.

BANG-BANG-BANG!

The Warden moved.

Not backward.

Sideways.

It disappeared from one place and appeared thirty meters away.

Wind Step.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

He immediately understood.

It's not flying.

It's using the wind itself as movement.

The Warden spread its wings.

A pressure wave swept across the plateau.

Kael ducked.

The Guardian raised a barrier.

BOOM!

The barrier fractured.

Kael looked at the ground.

The stone was covered in thin cracks.

The attack wasn't simply wind.

It carried the Warden's territory authority.

Kael activated Network Sense.

The plateau appeared.

The guardian was connected to the eastern node.

Its power was being continuously replenished.

Mana flowed upward from the node.

Through the air.

Into its body.

Kael smiled.

“So you're another Territory Lord with home-field advantage.”

The Warden heard him.

“Do not compare me to them.”

Its silver eyes sharpened.

“I am not a Lord.”

Kael raised an eyebrow.

“Your System says otherwise.”

“I am a guardian.”

The Warden spread its wings.

“The distinction matters.”

The Warden disappeared.

Kael immediately activated Metal Sense.

Nothing.

He changed to Network Sense.

Still nothing.

A gust struck his back.

Kael twisted.

The Warden's talon stopped inches from his shoulder.

Kael swung the katana.

CLANG!

The blade hit reinforced feathers.

The Warden recoiled.

Kael's eyes widened.

Armor.

The creature wasn't only using wind.

Its feathers were protecting its body.

The Warden twisted midair.

Its wing struck.

Kael blocked with the katana.

The impact threw him sideways.

He rolled.

Recovered.

Fired.

BANG!

The bullet struck.

The Warden disappeared.

Then reappeared above him.

Kael looked up.

Too late.

A compressed wind blade descended.

He activated Metal Control.

A metal barrier rose.

BOOM!

The barrier shattered.

Kael was thrown to one knee.

He breathed heavily.

The Guardian moved beside him.

“Don't fight its movement.”

Kael looked at it.

“What?”

“You are chasing the wrong thing.”

The Guardian pointed upward.

“It's controlling the air around you.”

Kael understood.

The Warden didn't need to aim its attacks.

It was manipulating the entire space.

That meant every movement Kael made could be predicted through the air pressure.

His body wasn't hiding from it.

The entire battlefield was reporting to it.

Kael smiled.

“Then I'll stop moving normally.”

Kael placed PR-02 on the ground.

The Warden watched.

It probably expected him to retreat.

Instead—

Kael activated Metal Control.

The plateau erupted.

Dozens of thin metal stakes rose from the ground.

The Warden immediately spread its wings.

A gale formed.

The stakes were thrown sideways.

Kael smiled.

Exactly what he wanted.

The wind revealed its direction.

He watched the movement.

The Warden changed position.

Kael tracked the pressure.

Another stake.

Another gust.

Another movement.

He wasn't attacking.

He was mapping the air.

After several exchanges—

Kael saw it.

The Warden had a rhythm.

Not predictable movement.

Predictable pressure transitions.

Every Wind Step required a momentary compression of the air.

That compression left a signal.

Kael could detect it.

He raised PR-02.

Weakness Lock.

The System analyzed.

[Target movement pattern partially identified.]

[Wind Step transition detectable.]

Kael smiled.

“There.”

The Warden moved.

Kael fired.

BANG!

The shot reached the transition point.

The Warden twisted.

The bullet grazed one wing.

A small crack appeared in its reinforced feathers.

The Warden stopped.

For the first time—

Kael had actually hit it cleanly.

The creature stared at him.

“You learned quickly.”

Kael answered:

“I had to.”

The Warden's eyes narrowed.

Then the entire sky darkened.

The Warden spread both wings.

The wind around the plateau stopped moving naturally.

It began rotating.

A massive spiral formed overhead.

Dust.

Leaves.

Loose stones.

Even metal fragments were lifted into the air.

Kael's expression became serious.

The System flashed.

[Territory Authority activated.]

[Gale Dominion.]

[Aerial Sovereignty activated.]

The Warden's voice echoed across the plateau.

“You have measured my movement.”

The spiral grew larger.

“But you have not measured my territory.”

Kael looked up.

The sky was becoming a weapon.

A massive column of wind descended.

Kael and the Guardian separated.

BOOM!

The ground cracked.

Kael activated Metal Control.

Metal plates rose around him.

The wind crushed the first.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Kael's mana dropped rapidly.

Too much.

He couldn't keep defending.

He needed to solve the actual problem.

He looked upward.

The Warden was at the center of the storm.

The eastern node beneath the plateau was feeding it.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

I don't need to beat the storm.

I need to break the connection.

But unlike the previous Territory Lords—

this guardian wasn't drawing energy through roots.

It was drawing it through atmospheric mana.

Kael needed another method.

He looked at the metal stakes scattered around the plateau.

Then at the storm.

Then—

he smiled.

Kael grabbed several metal rods.

He planted them around the plateau.

One.

Two.

Three.

Six.

Eight.

The Warden noticed.

“What are you doing?”

Kael didn't answer.

He connected the rods using Metal Control.

The formation created a massive ring.

The storm continued.

Wind struck the metal.

The rods vibrated.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

He wasn't trying to block the wind.

He was measuring it.

Each rod recorded the pressure.

Kael adjusted the positions.

The storm changed slightly.

He adjusted again.

The formation began pulling the airflow toward a central point.

The Warden's eyes widened.

“You are redirecting my domain.”

Kael grinned.

“Not yet.”

He activated Network Sense.

The eastern node appeared beneath the battlefield.

The atmospheric mana flowed from the node—

into the storm—

then into the Warden.

Kael altered the formation again.

This time, the airflow began circulating differently.

The mana flow became uneven.

The Warden's regeneration slowed.

Its Wind Step weakened.

Its pressure field flickered.

[Target territory synchronization reduced.]

Kael's eyes sharpened.

[84%.]

[71%.]

[63%.]

The Warden roared.

The storm intensified.

Kael was thrown sideways.

He slammed into the ground.

The metal formation began breaking.

The Warden had adapted.

Again.

Kael coughed and stood.

“Of course.”

The Warden descended.

“You understand quickly.”

Its eyes glowed.

“But you depend too heavily on understanding after the battle has begun.”

Kael smiled.

“Then I'll learn while fighting.”

The Warden charged.

Kael's Armament Bonds activated.

PR-02 rose.

AR-03V followed.

The Warden moved.

Kael fired.

BANG!

Miss.

It used Wind Step.

Kael fired again.

BANG!

The Warden shifted.

Miss.

Kael fired a third.

BANG!

The bullet struck.

The Warden twisted.

The round grazed its side.

Kael had adjusted his aim based on the pressure transition.

The creature was learning too.

It accelerated.

Kael recalled the katana.

The Warden's talon struck.

CLANG!

The blade held.

Kael was pushed backward.

The creature attacked again.

Kael blocked.

Again.

Kael ducked.

A wing struck him.

He flew several meters.

The Warden pursued.

Kael activated Metal Control.

A chain shot from the ground.

The Warden avoided it.

Another.

It avoided again.

Kael wasn't trying to hit it.

He was limiting its available movement paths.

The Warden realized it.

It changed direction.

Kael was ready.

PR-02 fired.

BANG!

The shot struck the wing.

The Warden lost altitude.

Kael immediately fired AR-03V.

BANG-BANG-BANG!

The creature created a wind barrier.

Two rounds were deflected.

One struck.

Kael rushed forward.

Katana.

SHING!

The blade struck its armor.

The Warden recoiled.

But it didn't fall.

Instead—

it released a point-blank burst of wind.

Kael was thrown backward.

He hit the ground hard.

His vision blurred.

The Warden hovered above him.

It could finish the attack.

But it didn't.

It waited.

Kael slowly stood.

“Why did you stop?”

The Warden looked down.

“Because if I wanted you dead…”

The wind around it intensified.

“…you would already be dead.”

Kael's expression changed.

This wasn't a battle to the death.

It was a test.

Again.

The Warden lowered itself until its eyes were level with Kael's.

“You have restored two sections of a network you barely understand.”

“You have killed Lords.”

“You have challenged structures older than your family.”

“But you still make the same mistake.”

Kael frowned.

“What mistake?”

“You see an obstacle.”

“You think of defeating it.”

Kael said nothing.

The Warden continued.

“A guardian is not an obstacle.”

Kael's expression shifted.

The creature turned toward the eastern node.

“I was not created to fight you.”

“Then why did you?”

“To determine whether you understood that.”

Kael slowly lowered his katana.

“So this was a trial.”

“Yes.”

The Warden looked toward the metal formation Kael had built.

“You adapted.”

“You studied my movement.”

“You discovered my connection to the node.”

“You constructed a temporary counter to my territory.”

“And most importantly…”

The creature looked directly at him.

“You stopped trying to kill me once you realized what I was.”

Kael nodded.

“What do you want?”

The Warden turned toward the buried node.

“The eastern section requires an Administrator.”

Kael's eyes sharpened.

“You're permitting me to restore it?”

“No.”

The Warden looked at him.

“I am asking you to prove that you should.”

The Warden raised one claw.

The eastern node opened.

A massive underground chamber appeared.

Inside was a crimson structure.

But unlike the Western Node—

it was intact.

Kael stared.

“Why wasn't this damaged?”

“Because I protected it.”

The Warden spread its wings.

“Your enemies have not reached this section.”

Kael frowned.

“Then why haven't you repaired the Fourth Path?”

“Because I am not a Darven.”

Kael understood.

The guardian could protect the connection.

But it could not restore the missing bloodline path.

The Warden pointed toward the structure.

“You must connect the Administrator authority yourself.”

Kael stepped forward.

The System appeared.

[Eastern Section of Fourth Path detected.]

[Current Status: Dormant.]

[Guardian protection: Active.]

[Foreign interference: None.]

Kael looked at the Warden.

“What happens if I fail?”

The creature answered simply.

“The eastern section will reject you.”

“And?”

“The network will remember.”

Kael frowned.

“That sounds harmless.”

“It isn't.”

The Warden's eyes sharpened.

“If you fail…”

“The next time you attempt to use Administrator authority, the network will treat you as an intruder.”

Kael became serious.

That meant failure wouldn't simply delay him.

It could make future restoration much harder.

He approached the node.

The Guardian stepped aside.

Kael placed his hand against the crimson structure.

The node activated.

Crimson light flowed into his arm.

[Darven Authority detected.]

[Administrator recognized.]

Kael exhaled.

Then—

a second notification appeared.

[Eastern Guardian Authority synchronized.]

The Warden's power entered the network.

Green.

Then crimson.

The two energies intertwined.

[Fourth Path restoration sequence initiated.]

Kael smiled.

It was working.

But the network suddenly displayed something else.

[Foreign signature detected.]

Kael froze.

The Warden's expression changed.

“That shouldn't be there.”

A black mark appeared inside the eastern node.

Tiny.

Almost invisible.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

Someone had already touched this section.

But not enough to activate an anchor.

They had left something behind.

A message.

Kael's Network Sense expanded.

The black signature contained a recognizable pattern.

The same copied Administrator authority he had detected before.

Kael whispered:

“They've already been here.”

The Warden's eyes narrowed.

“Yes.”

Kael looked at the mark.

“But they didn't activate it.”

“No.”

“Why?”

The Warden looked toward the eastern forest.

“Because they were waiting for you to arrive.”

Kael's expression hardened.

The black mark pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

a voice came through the network.

Not the unknown entity.

Not the ancient sealed entity.

A human voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Kael.”

Kael froze.

The Warden looked toward him.

The voice continued.

“You really did inherit everything.”

Kael's eyes narrowed.

He knew that voice.

Darian.

“But you still haven't inherited the most important thing.”

Kael's grip tightened.

“What?”

A faint laugh traveled through the network.

“Your family's truth.”

The connection cut.

The eastern node became silent.

Kael stared at it.

The System appeared.

[Fourth Path restoration paused.]

[Progress remains: 2/4.]

[Reason: Administrator uncertainty detected.]

Kael slowly lowered his hand.

The Warden looked at him.

“You know the voice.”

Kael nodded.

“Darian.”

The Warden's silver eyes narrowed.

“Then your next battle may not be against a guardian.”

Kael looked toward the distant forest.

“No.”

His eyes hardened.

“It may be against someone who knows exactly how I was taught to fight.”
