THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 69 — The Brother Who Was Erased
The settlement fell silent.
Even the wind seemed to have stopped.
Kael stood several meters away from the armored man.
Black armor.
Silver eyes.
A presence that made the air feel heavier without releasing a visible trace of mana.
And one sentence kept repeating inside Kael's mind.
“I am the brother your family forgot existed.”
The old man beside Kael had gone completely pale.
Not afraid.
Recognizing.
“You…”
His voice barely escaped his throat.
Erynd slowly turned his silver eyes toward him.
“You remember.”
The old man's fingers tightened around his walking stick.
“I thought you were dead.”
Erynd gave a faint smile.
“That was the purpose.”
Kael's hand moved toward the hilt of his katana.
Not drawing it.
Just close enough.
Erynd noticed.
His eyes shifted toward the weapon.
Then toward the rifle hanging at Kael's side.
Then toward the unfamiliar configuration of Kael's other firearm.
“You really are Darven.”
Kael's expression hardened.
“You say that as though it surprised you.”
“It didn't.”
Erynd took one step forward.
The ground did not shake.
There was no explosion of pressure.
No dramatic release of killing intent.
That was what concerned Kael.
Strong people often revealed their strength through pressure.
Erynd revealed almost nothing.
His strength was being deliberately hidden.
Kael activated Network Sense.
The world changed.
The settlement became a web of faint lines.
Verdant mana.
Ancient pathways.
The remnants of the lost branch's old defenses.
The eastern region's restored network.
And—
Nothing.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
Erynd wasn't connected to the network.
At least…
not normally.
System.
[Network Sense active.]
[Target detected.]
[Network signature: None.]
[Administrator signature: None.]
[Bloodline resonance: Irregular.]
[Analysis incomplete.]
Irregular.
Not false.
Not absent.
Irregular.
Kael immediately became more cautious.
The old man whispered,
“You shouldn't have come back.”
Erynd looked at him.
“I didn't come back for you.”
His eyes moved toward Kael.
“I came for him.”
Kael's expression didn't change.
“For me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Erynd didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he reached up and removed one armored glove.
His hand was ordinary.
Human.
But on the back of it was a mark.
A dark symbol resembling four interconnected paths surrounding a small empty circle.
Kael had seen the symbol before.
Not in the lost branch.
Not in his father's records.
Not in the ancient network.
He had seen it in the deepest section beneath the mountain.
Near the Final Section.
His pupils contracted.
Erynd noticed.
“So you have seen it.”
Kael's voice became colder.
“Where?”
“That is the wrong question.”
“Then give me the right one.”
Erynd smiled.
“Ask what it means.”
Kael studied the mark.
“What does it mean?”
Erynd answered immediately.
“It means our family was never the owner.”
Silence.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
“What?”
“The Darven bloodline.”
Erynd slowly lowered his hand.
“You were taught that the Darvens inherited something ancient.”
“Yes.”
“You were taught that the family protected it.”
“Yes.”
“You were taught that your ancestors created the systems around it.”
Kael said nothing.
Erynd's smile disappeared.
“They didn't.”
The old man closed his eyes.
Kael felt something inside him tighten.
He already knew that much.
Or at least…
he thought he did.
His father.
The lost branch.
The ancient network.
The bloodline.
The Administrator.
Everything had been pointing toward the same conclusion.
The Darvens had inherited something far older than their family name.
But Erynd's next words changed the meaning.
“They were not the first.”
Kael narrowed his eyes.
“Who was?”
Erynd looked toward the distant mountains.
“The question isn't who.”
He paused.
“The question is what.”
Kael didn't answer.
Erynd continued.
“Your bloodline isn't simply an inheritance.”
A faint wind moved through the settlement.
“It is a continuation.”
Kael's fingers tightened around the katana.
“Continuation of what?”
Erynd looked directly into his eyes.
“A function.”
That word struck Kael harder than it should have.
Function.
The same concept used by the guardians.
The same principle behind the Fourth Path.
The same logic behind the ancient network.
Kael's System reacted.
[Conceptual resonance detected.]
[Bloodline Progress: 15%]
[Administrator Path: Active]
[Warning.]
[Information incomplete.]
Kael ignored the warning.
“You know about the Administrator.”
“I know more than you.”
“About the Ancient Core?”
Erynd's expression changed.
For the first time, Kael saw genuine caution.
“Yes.”
“And the entity beneath the mountain?”
Erynd didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
Kael immediately understood.
He knew.
But Erynd wasn't willing to say its name.
The old man finally spoke.
“Kael…”
Kael looked toward him.
“There is something you need to understand.”
The old man's voice trembled.
“When the lost branch was erased from the family records, we weren't erased because we betrayed the Darvens.”
Erynd's gaze shifted.
“We were erased because we remembered too much.”
Kael remained still.
“What did you remember?”
The old man looked at Erynd.
Erynd answered instead.
“The existence of a fourth sibling.”
Kael's eyes widened slightly.
The old man looked down.
“Seran. Darian. Your father…”
He swallowed.
“And Erynd.”
Kael stared at him.
“But you said there were three brothers.”
“I said there were three brothers known to the main branch.”
The old man's grip tightened around his cane.
“Erynd was removed from the records before most of the family even knew his name.”
Kael slowly exhaled.
That explained one contradiction.
But not enough.
“Why?”
Erynd answered.
“Because I was born with a mark.”
He showed the symbol again.
“The same mark that appears in the ancient structures.”
Kael studied it.
“Does that mean you're an Administrator?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Erynd's eyes became colder.
“I was born as something the network couldn't classify.”
The System immediately reacted.
[Unknown bloodline interaction detected.]
[Target classification failure.]
[Caution.]
Kael's expression changed.
Classification failure.
The System almost never gave him that.
Even monsters that exceeded known grades were usually marked as unknown.
But a human blood relative causing classification failure was different.
Erynd lowered his hand.
“I wasn't taken into the network.”
“I wasn't accepted by the ancient structure.”
“And I wasn't given the Administrator function.”
“Instead…”
His silver eyes reflected faint moonlight.
“I was rejected.”
Kael stared at him.
“Rejected by whom?”
Erynd looked toward the mountains.
“The Core.”
The word hung in the air.
Kael felt the blood in his veins grow colder.
The Ancient Core had recognized him as Administrator.
The Ancient Core had responded to his bloodline.
But Erynd—
had been rejected.
Why?
Kael's mind immediately began connecting possibilities.
If Erynd had the same bloodline…
If he possessed the ancient mark…
If he existed before the network acknowledged Kael…
Then perhaps the Darven bloodline had multiple possible paths.
Administrator.
Successor.
Something else.
Something that the network had never been designed to control.
Kael asked,
“What happened after the Core rejected you?”
Erynd's expression became unreadable.
“I left.”
“Why?”
“Because your ancestors tried to kill me.”
The old man flinched.
Kael looked at him.
“Is that true?”
The old man didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Kael already knew.
Erynd continued.
“They were afraid.”
“Of you?”
“Of what I represented.”
“What did you represent?”
Erynd looked directly at him.
“That the bloodline could exist without the network.”
Silence.
Kael's thoughts accelerated.
That was important.
Very important.
If the bloodline existed independently—
then the ancient civilization had not created the bloodline.
It had built around it.
But if some bloodline users could exist outside the network entirely…
then the Four Authorities weren't the complete structure.
There could be another branch.
Another function.
Another path.
Another reason the ancient system had feared the Darvens.
Kael slowly asked,
“Then why come to me now?”
Erynd's answer was immediate.
“Because you're approaching the point where they will notice you.”
“Who?”
Erynd looked at the mountains.
“The people who erased us.”
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“The Severance Order?”
“No.”
Erynd's answer was quiet.
“The Severance Order is only using what was left behind.”
Kael's expression darkened.
“Then who is controlling them?”
“I don't know.”
That answer surprised him.
Erynd continued before Kael could respond.
“But I know what they're looking for.”
“The Origin?”
Erynd nodded.
“And something else.”
“What?”
Erynd's silver eyes fixed on Kael.
“You.”
Kael's instincts sharpened.
“Me?”
“Not Kael Darven.”
Erynd pointed toward his chest.
“The Administrator.”
The air suddenly changed.
A faint vibration passed through the settlement.
Kael activated Network Sense again.
This time—
something appeared.
Far away.
Deep beneath the eastern land.
A single black pulse.
Then another.
Then another.
Three.
Kael's expression hardened.
“Network activity.”
Erynd looked toward the same direction.
“They found you.”
The old man stumbled backward.
“No…”
Kael immediately reached for his rifle.
“Enemy count?”
The System struggled.
[Network Sense detecting foreign signatures.]
[Distance: Unknown.]
[Estimated entities: 6–12.]
[Classification: Severance-altered.]
[Threat evaluation incomplete.]
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“Only six to twelve?”
Erynd shook his head.
“No.”
His expression became serious.
“That's what they're allowing you to see.”
A cold feeling entered Kael's chest.
Erynd pointed toward the ground.
“Look beneath you.”
Kael's Network Sense spread.
The old settlement lit up.
Then he saw them.
Tiny black threads.
Buried beneath the streets.
Under the abandoned houses.
Inside the old stone foundations.
Around the settlement perimeter.
They weren't attacking.
They were waiting.
Kael immediately understood.
The lost branch settlement wasn't abandoned.
It was a trap.
Or worse—
a beacon.
Someone had been watching this place for years.
Waiting for a Darven to return.
Waiting for Kael.
Kael's jaw tightened.
“You knew.”
Erynd's answer was calm.
“Yes.”
“You brought me here.”
“No.”
Erynd turned toward him.
“I brought myself here.”
A faint metallic sound came from beneath the ground.
Then another.
Then dozens.
Kael drew his katana.
The old man stepped back.
Erynd didn't move.
Kael's system flashed.
[Combat event detected.]
[Foreign network activation.]
[Multiple buried structures awakening.]
[Administrator Authority being challenged.]
Then another window appeared.
One Kael had never seen before.
[Bloodline Event Triggered.]
[Condition satisfied.]
[Two compatible Darven signatures detected.]
Kael froze.
Erynd looked at the same invisible notification.
His silver eyes widened.
For the first time since arriving—
he looked genuinely shocked.
Then the ground beneath them cracked.
A black light erupted from deep underground.
And from somewhere beneath the ruined settlement, a voice whispered:
“Two successors…”
Kael raised his weapon.
Erynd's expression turned grim.
The voice continued.
“…were never supposed to meet.”
The entire settlement collapsed into darkness.
