THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 79 — The First Key
The darkness inside Kael's mind slowly faded.
The enormous stone hall remained.
Four statues stood before him.
Three had been shattered.
The fourth remained intact.
Its face was impossible to recognize.
It did not resemble Kael.
It did not resemble his father.
Yet something about it felt familiar.
An ancient pressure surrounded the statue.
Not hostile.
Not welcoming.
Simply waiting.
In front of it rested a sealed stone chest.
Kael stepped closer.
Above the chest, the strange ancient name continued glowing.
It was not Darven.
It was not Administrator.
It was not any title Kael knew.
It was a word from an older era.
The moment Kael tried to pronounce it, his System reacted.
[Ancient bloodline terminology detected.]
[Translation incomplete.]
[Meaning approximately: “Bearer of the Unbroken Path.”]
Kael stared.
“Unbroken Path…”
A voice echoed through the chamber.
“Names change.”
“Families rise and fall.”
“Civilizations disappear.”
“Functions remain.”
Kael turned.
There was no one there.
The voice continued.
“The first key belongs to the one who reaches the Fourth Threshold.”
Kael approached the chest.
A symbol appeared on its surface.
Four paths.
One empty circle.
Then a fifth symbol emerged.
A narrow line connecting them.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“The fifth path.”
The voice did not answer.
Instead—
the chest opened.
A small black object floated upward.
It wasn't a weapon.
It wasn't an artifact.
It looked like a thin metal shard.
Barely the size of a finger.
But the moment Kael touched it—
BOOM!
A surge of information entered his mind.
Kael staggered.
Images appeared.
A vast ancient civilization.
Cities built around enormous mana structures.
Thousands of people carrying the same strange bloodline.
Ancient weapons.
Ancient monsters.
Four great administrators.
And beyond them—
something else.
A person standing outside the network.
Walking freely between its boundaries.
Not controlling it.
Not serving it.
Not fighting it.
Simply moving beyond it.
Then the image disappeared.
Kael opened his eyes.
The metal shard floated in front of him.
The System appeared.
[First Key acquired.]
[Item: Darven Legacy Key — Fragment I]
[Grade: Unknown]
[Function: Sealed]
[Requirement for full activation:]
[Bloodline Progress: 20%]
[Additional Requirement: Level 50]
Kael stared.
“So I can't use it yet.”
A second message appeared.
[Partial function available.]
[Legacy Key may record and preserve bloodline-related information.]
[Legacy Key may improve compatibility with ancient Darven structures.]
Kael smiled faintly.
“At least it's useful.”
Then—
the voice returned.
“The key does not make you strong.”
Kael looked toward the statues.
“It only allows the strong to open what was hidden.”
The hall began disappearing.
The fourth statue slowly turned its head.
For a brief moment—
Kael saw its eyes.
Silver.
Like Erynd's.
Kael froze.
Then the entire chamber vanished.
Back to the Hunting Ground
Kael opened his eyes.
He was still standing before the ancient stone tablet.
The defeated Umbral Stalker lay motionless nearby.
The Ancient Hunting Ground had become quiet again.
Kael looked at his hand.
The metal shard from the inheritance was gone.
Yet he could feel it.
Inside his consciousness.
Stored safely within the System.
Kael opened his status.
[Kael Darven]
Level: 40
Strength: 39
Agility: 48
Vitality: 46
Intelligence: 43
Mana: 44
Bloodline Progress: 15%
Metal Control Mastery: III
Darven Forge: Active
Darven Armament: 3/3
Administrator Authority: Active
Beast Path Compatibility: 4%
Legacy Key Fragment I: Acquired
Kael closed the window.
“Ten levels.”
Level 50.
Then—
the Legendary Beasts.
Kael looked at the map.
The Level 48 Territory Lord was still in the central region.
But something had changed.
Its signature had moved.
Closer.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“It knows I reached Level 40.”
He didn't know how.
But the creature was no longer waiting in the center.
It was coming toward him.
Kael smiled.
“Fine.”
He began walking.
Kael followed the Territory Lord's signature for nearly an hour. The environment gradually changed.
The ancient valley became rocky.
Black stone replaced soil.
The temperature dropped.
Every few hundred meters, he found enormous claw marks across the ground.
Some were deeper than his arm.
Kael crouched beside one.
Fresh.
The System analyzed it.
[Trace analysis.]
[Target passed this location approximately 11 minutes ago.]
Kael looked ahead.
“So it's following me.”
He stood.
There was no point pretending otherwise.
He continued.
After another kilometer—
the valley opened.
A massive crater stretched ahead.
At its center stood an enormous creature.
Kael stopped.
It was unlike anything he had fought before.
Its body was covered in dark metallic scales.
Four long horns emerged from its skull.
Its front limbs were massive.
Its rear limbs resembled a giant predator's.
A long tail dragged through the stone.
But the strangest part was its chest.
A glowing red core was visible beneath several layers of translucent armor.
The creature slowly raised its head.
Its eyes locked onto Kael.
The System appeared.
[Crimson Core Tyrant]
Level: 48
Grade: Lord
Potential: Overlord
Classification: Territory Lord
Traits:
Crimson Core
Ironblood Armor
Energy Conversion
Core Regeneration
Overwhelming Strength
Predator's Authority
Territory Suppression
Core Burst
Warning: Target possesses exceptionally high energy density.
Kael stared.
“Core regeneration.”
That trait was dangerous.
The previous Lord-class monsters had individual weaknesses.
This one appeared to be built around the core itself.
If he damaged the core—
it could potentially regenerate.
If he used mana—
it could convert the energy.
If he fought physically—
its armor would resist him.
Kael smiled.
“That's a troublesome one.”
The Tyrant stood.
The crater shook.
Then—
it vanished.
Kael's danger sense exploded.
He turned.
Too late.
BOOM!
A massive fist struck his metal barrier.
The barrier exploded.
Kael was thrown across the crater.
He landed hard and immediately rolled.
The Tyrant was already charging again.
Kael raised PR-02.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three physical rounds struck its shoulder.
The armor cracked.
But the cracks immediately began closing.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“Core Regeneration.”
The Tyrant reached him.
Kael jumped.
The monster's fist passed beneath him.
Kael activated Metal Control.
A metal platform formed beneath his feet.
He pushed off.
Katana.
SLASH!
The blade struck the creature's neck.
A shallow cut appeared.
The Tyrant turned.
Its tail swept sideways.
Kael ducked.
The tail destroyed the metal platform.
Kael landed.
The Tyrant attacked again.
Kael blocked.
CLANG!
The force sent him backward.
He slid twenty meters.
Kael looked at his arms.
They were shaking.
“This one is stronger than the previous Lords.”
The Tyrant roared.
Red energy erupted from its chest.
The air became hot.
The System warned him.
[Crimson Core charging.]
[Core Burst imminent.]
Kael immediately sprinted.
A beam of red energy exploded from the creature.
BOOOOOOM!
The crater behind Kael disappeared.
Kael jumped over the shockwave.
The Tyrant charged through its own attack.
Kael's expression changed.
It was using the core burst as cover.
The creature swung.
Kael blocked.
The force threw him upward.
The Tyrant jumped after him.
Its fist came down.
Kael crossed his arms.
Metal reinforced his body.
BOOM!
Kael crashed into the ground.
A crater formed beneath him.
He rolled before the next strike.
The Tyrant followed.
Kael sprinted.
He needed information.
Not victory.
Information first.
He fired.
Physical.
No reaction.
Mana Disruption.
The creature's armor flickered.
But regenerated.
Armor penetration.
The round penetrated farther.
The creature roared.
Kael noticed something.
The armor recovered more slowly after Mana Disruption.
He immediately changed ammunition.
BANG!
BANG!
BANG!
Three disruption rounds.
The armor's regeneration weakened.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
“Mana disrupts the conversion process.”
The Tyrant charged.
Kael dodged.
The monster turned unusually quickly.
It anticipated him.
Kael jumped.
A red blade of energy passed underneath.
Another.
Another.
The Tyrant had begun changing its attack patterns.
Kael retreated.
Then suddenly—
the Tyrant stopped.
Its chest opened slightly.
The crimson core became brighter.
Kael froze.
Something was wrong.
The core wasn't charging an attack.
It was absorbing the damage he had dealt.
Every bullet.
Every sword strike.
The energy was returning.
Kael's eyes widened.
“It converts damage into energy.”
The Tyrant roared.
The cracks in its armor vanished.
Its aura exploded outward.
Kael was thrown several meters.
The monster had become stronger.
Kael immediately stopped attacking.
This was worse than expected.
He needed to interrupt the process.
But how?
He couldn't stop the core.
He couldn't destroy the armor.
And every attack fed it.
Kael looked around the crater.
Stone.
Metal fragments.
His weapons.
The Tyrant.
Then—
he remembered the Drowned Mire Wraith.
The solution wasn't always to overpower the enemy.
Sometimes the solution was to attack the system surrounding it.
Kael activated Network Sense.
The territory appeared.
The Tyrant's territory was connected to several underground mana channels.
But the creature's core wasn't directly connected.
Interesting.
Kael moved toward one of the channels.
The Tyrant followed.
Kael fired at the ground.
BANG!
Mana Disruption spread.
The territory flickered.
The Tyrant slowed.
Kael fired again.
Another channel.
The Tyrant roared.
Its core brightness decreased.
Kael smiled.
“The territory amplifies you.”
The monster charged.
Kael ran.
He began targeting the channels instead of the creature.
One.
Two.
Three.
The Tyrant destroyed several before Kael could reach them.
So Kael changed strategy.
He used the creature itself.
He lured the Tyrant over the channels.
Then disrupted the ground beneath its feet.
Every time it stepped—
the channel weakened.
The monster became increasingly frustrated.
Its movements slowed.
Its regeneration weakened.
Kael saw the opportunity.
He drew the katana.
The Tyrant charged.
Kael moved.
One step.
Two.
He slid beneath the monster.
Katana.
SLASH!
The same weakened armor section.
The Tyrant turned.
Kael fired a Mana-Breaker round into the crack.
BANG!
The armor fractured.
But this time—
the core didn't absorb the damage.
Because the territory beneath it had been disrupted.
Kael's eyes widened.
“That works.”
The Tyrant roared.
Kael moved again.
Another channel.
Another disruption.
Another sword strike.
Another Mana-Breaker round.
The creature's armor gradually weakened.
But the monster adapted.
It stopped standing over the channels.
Instead—
it began destroying them.
Kael's expression hardened.
The Tyrant was learning his strategy.
So Kael changed again.
He stopped attacking the territory.
He started manipulating the monster's movement with metal.
Metal spikes appeared.
The Tyrant destroyed them.
Chains.
Destroyed.
Platforms.
Destroyed.
Kael kept changing.
He wasn't trying to hold it.
He was guiding it.
Slowly—
toward the center.
The exact point where several channels crossed.
The monster realized too late.
Kael slammed his hand down.
WHUM!
All the surrounding metal fragments activated.
The entire crater lit up.
The territory network became unstable.
The Tyrant stumbled.
Kael rushed forward.
The monster attacked.
Kael dodged.
The tail followed.
Kael jumped.
The fist came next.
He blocked.
The pressure pushed him backward.
The monster opened its chest.
Core Burst.
Kael's eyes widened.
He couldn't escape.
Instead—
he ran directly toward the creature.
At the last second, he dropped low.
The beam fired above him.
Kael slid beneath it.
The core was exposed.
Kael reached PR-02.
He had one high-grade physical round left.
He loaded it.
Then—
he stopped.
A physical round would damage the core.
But the core regenerated.
He needed something else.
Kael looked at the metal fragments around him.
His eyes widened.
“Metal Control.”
The fragments flew.
They surrounded the core.
The Tyrant roared.
Kael compressed them.
Not into a weapon.
Into a cage.
A metallic lattice formed around the core.
The Tyrant struggled.
The cage held.
Its energy couldn't escape.
Kael immediately injected Mana Disruption into the cage.
The crimson core flickered.
The Tyrant's energy conversion stopped.
Kael smiled.
“Now.”
He fired.
BANG!
The physical round struck directly through the center.
The core cracked.
The Tyrant screamed.
But it didn't fall.
The regeneration began.
Kael's expression hardened.
He had one chance.
He used the damaged remnants of his entire battlefield.
Metal fragments.
Conductors.
Broken weapons.
Every piece of usable metal flew toward the core.
The cage became thicker.
Tighter.
Denser.
Kael poured his mana into it.
His body shook.
His Metal Control was reaching its limit.
The Tyrant began breaking free.
One piece.
Another.
The cage cracked.
Kael gritted his teeth.
“Not yet.”
The monster roared.
The cage shattered.
Kael's vision blurred.
The Tyrant raised its fist.
Kael stood.
The creature attacked.
Kael moved.
He stepped inside the punch.
His katana flashed.
SLASH!
The crack in the core widened.
The Tyrant froze.
Kael immediately pushed his hand forward.
Metal Control penetrated the exposed core.
Not physically.
Through the damaged armor.
He felt the structure.
The energy.
The circulation.
The regeneration mechanism.
And he realized—
the core was not healing itself.
It was borrowing energy from the territory.
Kael smiled.
He severed the connection.
SNAP.
The Tyrant stopped regenerating.
Its eyes widened.
Kael raised his katana.
One final strike.
SLASH!
The crimson core shattered.
The enormous creature collapsed.
Silence filled the crater.
The System appeared.
[Crimson Core Tyrant defeated.]
[Territory Lord defeated.]
[Ancient Territory Core obtained.]
[Crimson Core Fragment obtained.]
[Experience acquired.]
Kael stood motionless.
Then—
[Level Up.]
[Level 41 reached.]
Kael lowered his sword.
“One.”
He sat down.
His body was exhausted.
But the fight had taught him another important lesson.
Destroying the strongest part of an enemy wasn't always the answer.
Sometimes—
the strongest part was only strong because something else was feeding it.
He opened his attribute allocation.
Five points.
He chose:
+2 Strength
+1 Agility
+1 Vitality
+1 Intelligence
[Strength: 41]
[Agility: 49]
[Vitality: 47]
[Intelligence: 44]
[Mana: 45]
Kael stood.
The central hunting ground suddenly changed.
The death of the Level 48 Lord had destabilized the territory.
Dozens of monster signatures appeared.
Level 35.
Level 36.
Level 38.
Level 40.
And several—
Level 42.
Kael smiled.
“Perfect.”
He wasn't finished.
Not even close.
For the next several days—Kael hunted continuously.
He moved through the central region.
He fought packs.
He fought solitary predators.
He fought flying creatures.
He fought burrowing monsters.
He fought creatures that manipulated fire.
Creatures that froze the ground.
Creatures that attacked from underground.
Some fights lasted minutes.
Others lasted hours.
Kael rarely fought the same way twice.
Against a fire beast—
he used physical ammunition and heat-resistant metal.
Against a flying monster—
he created airborne platforms.
Against an underground predator—
he used vibration traps.
Against a regenerative creature—
he targeted its mana channels.
Against a pack—
he isolated the leader.
Against an intelligent monster—
he intentionally revealed weaknesses that weren't real.
Every battle gave him experience.
Every battle improved his understanding.
And every battle pushed him closer to Level 50.
By the end of the fourth day—
Kael reached Level 43.
By the sixth—
Level 44.
By the eighth—
Level 45.
But the stronger he became—
the stronger the monsters he attracted.
The central hunting ground seemed to recognize him as a growing threat.
Eventually—
he reached a massive plateau covered in black stone.
The System appeared.
[Warning.]
[Multiple powerful entities detected.]
[Level 45: 2]
[Level 46: 3]
[Level 47: 2]
[Level 49: 1]
Kael stared.
The Level 49 signature was enormous.
He had expected one major final battle.
Instead—
the entire hunting ground seemed to be gathering around him.
Kael slowly drew his katana.
His eyes hardened.
“Then come.”
A roar echoed through the plateau.
Then another.
Then dozens.
Kael looked toward the darkness.
Creatures were emerging.
The final stretch to Level 50 had begun.
And this time—
Kael wouldn't have the luxury of fighting them one at a time.
