THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 8 - The Golden Eyed Beast

  • Next Chapter

Kael did not sleep that night.

He sat beside the dying campfire, staring into the darkness beyond the trees.

The golden eyes were still there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Not attacking.

That was what disturbed him most.

Kael slowly reached for his Darven katana.

“Come out.”

Nothing happened.

He waited.

Then a branch moved.

A creature stepped from the darkness.

Kael's expression changed.

It looked like a wolf, but it was much larger than any Bloodfang Wolf he had encountered.

Its fur was deep black.

Thin golden lines ran across its body like glowing veins.

Its eyes were bright gold.

But unlike the Bloodfang Wolves—

It didn't have a savage expression.

It looked intelligent.

Kael activated his System.

[Scanning...]

[Species: Golden-Eyed Nightfang]

[Level: 8]

[Grade: Elite]

[Species Potential: Commander]

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“Level 8…”

It was stronger than the ordinary creatures he had fought.

But nowhere near the Level 15 Crimson Bloodfang Alpha.

Then another notification appeared.

[Warning.]

[Target possesses unusually high intelligence.]

Kael's expression became serious.

The beast stared directly at him.

Then it spoke.

“Human.”

Kael froze.

His hand tightened around the katana.

“You can talk?”

The creature tilted its head.

“I asked you first.”

Kael didn't answer.

The Nightfang slowly walked forward.

“You smell strange.”

Kael frowned.

“Strange?”

“Blood.”

The creature's golden eyes narrowed.

“Ancient blood.”

Kael immediately became alert.

His Darven bloodline.

Could this creature somehow sense it?

“What do you know about my blood?”

The Nightfang stared at him for several seconds.

“Nothing.”

It turned around.

“But something in this forest knows.”

Kael's eyes widened.

“What does that mean?”

The creature didn't answer.

It simply began walking away.

Kael followed.

“Wait.”

The Nightfang stopped.

“You're not afraid of me?”

Kael smiled faintly.

“You haven't attacked me.”

The creature looked over its shoulder.

“Perhaps I'm waiting for you to become worth attacking.”

Kael's expression changed.

Then the beast disappeared into the darkness.

Kael stood there silently.

He had never encountered a monster like that.

It hadn't attacked.

It hadn't threatened him.

It had simply appeared, spoken, and left.

But one sentence remained in his mind.

Something in this forest knows.

A New Objective

Kael returned to his camp.

He opened the System.

[New Personal Objective]

Explore the Dark Forest

Progress: 4%

Known Area: Outer Forest

Danger Level: Moderate

Kael frowned.

“Four percent?”

He had already spent weeks here.

And he had explored only four percent.

That meant the forest was enormous.

Perhaps larger than an entire kingdom.

He opened his map.

Most of it was completely blank.

The few areas he had explored were marked with simple symbols.

Safe Area

Bloodfang Territory

Unknown Territory

Extreme Danger

Kael looked at the last marking.

It was deep inside the forest.

He hadn't gone anywhere near it.

That was where his father had warned him never to rush.

Kael closed the map.

“Not yet.”

He wasn't stupid.

His current level was only two.

He couldn't challenge everything he encountered.

Training

The next morning, Kael began a new training routine.

He divided his time into four sections.

Physical Training.

Swordsmanship.

Magic and Mana Control.

Metal Control.

But he added one more.

Combat Strategy.

He had realized something during his fight with the Crimson Bloodfang Alpha.

Having many weapons didn't automatically make him strong.

He needed to know when to use each one.

So he began creating combat scenarios.

Close-range battle.

Long-range battle.

Multiple enemies.

Fast enemies.

Armored enemies.

Flying enemies.

Ambushes.

Escape situations.

He created metal targets throughout the forest.

Then he practiced switching between weapons.

Pistol.

Katana.

Assault rifle.

Sniper rifle.

Machine gun.

Heavy weapon.

His movements became smoother.

His weapon transitions became faster.

His Metal Arsenal skill gradually improved.

[Metal Arsenal proficiency increased.]

[Metal Arsenal — Beginner → Intermediate]

Kael smiled.

“Good.”

Level Three

Two weeks passed.

Kael hunted carefully.

He fought several Level 3–5 Common monsters.

Then he began fighting Level 6–8 Elite monsters.

He didn't kill every creature he encountered.

Some were too dangerous.

Some simply weren't worth fighting.

But gradually—

His experience increased.

One morning, after defeating an Elite monster, the System appeared.

[Experience requirement reached.]

[Level Up!]

[Level: 3]

[Attribute Points received: 5]

Kael sat down.

He opened his status.

Strength: 9

Agility: 11

Vitality: 9

Intelligence: 12

He considered his weaknesses.

His strength was adequate.

His agility was already one of his strongest attributes.

His intelligence helped with Metal Control and weapon creation.

But his vitality was still low.

Kael allocated:

Strength +1

Agility +1

Vitality +2

Intelligence +1

His status changed.

Strength: 10

Agility: 12

Vitality: 11

Intelligence: 13

Kael clenched his fist.

His body immediately felt more stable.

His breathing was stronger.

His movements felt more controlled.

He smiled.

“Level three.”

He looked toward the forest.

“One level at a time.”

The First Rare Monster

That afternoon, Kael discovered something unusual.

A massive tree had fallen across the path.

Its trunk was covered in deep claw marks.

Kael crouched.

He examined them.

“These aren't from a wolf.”

A sound came from behind him.

Growl.

Kael turned.

A creature stepped out.

It resembled a panther.

But its body was made partly from dark crystal.

Blue energy flowed beneath its crystalline skin.

Kael activated his System.

[Species: Night Crystal Panther]

[Level: 12]

[Grade: Rare]

[Species Potential: Lord]

Kael's expression became serious.

Level 12.

Rare Grade.

Potential Lord.

This was completely different from the creatures he had been fighting.

The panther vanished.

Kael barely sensed it.

CLANG!

His katana blocked the attack.

The impact sent him backward.

Kael immediately activated Metal Arsenal.

His pistol appeared in his hand.

He fired.

The panther twisted through the air.

The bullets missed.

Kael switched to his assault rifle.

The creature moved between the trees.

Too fast.

Kael stopped firing.

He closed his eyes.

He didn't try to see it.

He tried to feel the metal around it.

His Metal Control expanded.

There.

The panther's crystalline body was interfering with the surrounding metal.

Kael smiled.

“I found you.”

He raised his hand.

Metal fragments shot from the ground.

The panther was forced into the open.

Kael switched to his sniper rifle.

He aimed.

The panther charged.

Kael fired.

The shot struck.

The creature was thrown backward.

But it stood again.

Kael's expression became serious.

“Tough.”

The panther roared.

Its crystal body began glowing.

Blue energy spread across the battlefield.

Kael immediately sensed danger.

He activated Metal Reinforcement.

His katana strengthened.

The panther attacked.

Kael met it head-on.

Their collision shook the forest.

A Dangerous Victory

The battle lasted nearly an hour.

Kael was exhausted.

His mana was almost empty.

The Night Crystal Panther was covered in wounds.

Finally, Kael used his last reserve of Metal Control.

Every metal fragment around him gathered together.

He formed them into a massive spear.

Then—

He launched it.

The panther fell.

Silence returned.

The System appeared.

[Night Crystal Panther defeated.]

[Experience acquired.]

Kael waited.

His heart beat faster.

Then—

[Experience requirement reached.]

Kael's eyes widened.

[Level Up!]

[Level: 4]

[Attribute Points received: 5]

Kael smiled.

Another level.

He immediately opened his status.

Strength: 10

Agility: 12

Vitality: 11

Intelligence: 13

He thought carefully.

This time, he allocated:

Strength +1

Agility +2

Vitality +1

Intelligence +1

His new attributes became:

Strength: 11

Agility: 14

Vitality: 12

Intelligence: 14

Kael breathed slowly.

Level four.

Fourteen intelligence.

Fourteen agility.

He could feel himself changing.

But the System showed something else.

[Combat achievement detected.]

[You have defeated an opponent significantly stronger than yourself.]

[Combat Adaptation increased.]

[Skill acquired: Threat Analysis.]

Kael stared at the notification.

Threat Analysis.

That could be extremely useful.

He immediately activated it.

The System displayed information about the dead panther.

Night Crystal Panther

Level: 12

Grade: Rare

Species Potential: Lord

Current State: Mature

Primary Traits: Crystal Body, Shadow Movement, Mana Resistance

Kael's eyes widened.

“So that's what the System can really do.”

He looked toward the deeper forest.

There were creatures here far stronger than him.

But now he could understand them.

Measure them.

And decide whether to fight or retreat.

That might be more valuable than another weapon.

The Forest Moves

Kael began walking back toward his camp.

Then—

He stopped.

The trees had gone silent.

Again.

The same silence from before.

No birds.

No insects.

No wind.

Nothing.

Kael slowly turned.

His newly acquired Threat Analysis activated automatically.

[Warning.]

[Unknown presence detected.]

[Threat Analysis failed.]

Kael's blood ran cold.

A golden eye appeared between the trees.

Then another.

The Golden-Eyed Nightfang stepped into view.

But this time—

It wasn't alone.

Behind it stood several more creatures.

Kael's System scanned them.

[Golden-Eyed Nightfang]

[Level: 8]

[Grade: Elite]

Then another.

[Golden-Eyed Nightfang]

[Level: 11]

[Grade: Elite]

Then another.

[Level: 14]

[Grade: Rare]

Kael slowly reached for his katana.

The first Nightfang looked at him.

“You are growing.”

Kael narrowed his eyes.

“Why are you watching me?”

The creature didn't answer.

Instead, it looked toward the deeper forest.

Then it said:

“Because something else has noticed you.”

Kael's expression hardened.

“What?”

The Nightfang's golden eyes shifted back toward him.

“Something that doesn't care about your level.”

A low roar echoed from the depths.

The Nightfangs immediately lowered their heads.

Kael felt it.

A pressure he had never experienced before.

His System flickered.

[WARNING.]

[Unknown entity detected.]

[Level: ???]

[Grade: ???]

[Threat: Unmeasurable.]

Kael's heart began pounding.

For the first time since awakening his System—

He understood what the Unknown classification meant.

And whatever was approaching…

Wasn't a Level 15 Boss.

It wasn't a Commander.

It wasn't even an Ancient beast.

The System couldn't measure it.

Kael tightened his grip on his katana.

The forest trembled.

Something enormous was coming.

And Kael was only Level 4.
