THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker
Chapter 82 — The Prison Beyond the Beasts
The recording ended.
Kael stared at the black crystal.
His father's final sentence continued echoing in his mind.
“The Legendary Beasts are not the only things imprisoned inside.”
Kael didn't move.
He had originally believed the pocket world contained three beings.
Three Legendary Beasts.
Three eggs.
Three future companions.
That was what his father had told him.
But now—
something else existed inside the world.
Something his father had deliberately hidden.
Kael replayed the recording.
The same sentence.
Nothing more.
He examined the crystal.
No hidden message.
No second recording.
No additional instruction.
Kael frowned.
“You knew I would reach Level 50.”
He placed the crystal on the table.
“You knew I'd eventually enter the pocket world.”
“Why wait until now to tell me?”
There was no answer.
Kael leaned back.
His father's expression from the recording bothered him.
He had seen his father frightened before.
During the family massacre.
Even while dying, his father had remained determined.
But the expression in that recording was different.
It wasn't fear of an enemy.
It was fear of what Kael might discover.
Kael slowly stood.
“Then before I enter…”
He looked at Darven V-01.
“…I need to know what I'm walking into.”
Kael placed the access key from his Space Ring onto the stone table. The strange object immediately reacted.
A circular portal appeared.
But unlike the original portal from his childhood—
this one was tiny.
Only large enough for a hand.
A translucent System window appeared.
[Pocket World Access Key detected.]
[Full physical entry available.]
[Alternative function detected.]
[Remote Observation.]
[Cost: Mana.]
[Risk: Low.]
[Warning: Observation may attract attention from high-level entities.]
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“So I can scout it without entering.”
That solved one of his biggest problems.
He didn't need to begin the hundred-hour Legendary Immortality window just to learn the terrain.
He placed his hand near the portal.
“Remote Observation.”
His vision changed.
The Other Side
Darkness.
Then—
light.
Kael found himself looking down from above.
Not physically.
His consciousness was observing a vast world.
The pocket world was enormous.
Much larger than he had expected.
Mountains stretched beyond the horizon.
Forests covered entire regions.
Rivers crossed massive plains.
Floating islands hung in the sky.
Ancient ruins were scattered throughout the landscape.
And in the distance—
three enormous territories could be seen.
Three.
Each one was dramatically different.
The first was almost completely black.
A giant forest covered in unnatural shadows.
The second was green.
An immense valley filled with gigantic trees, poisonous vegetation and enormous lakes.
The third was blue.
A dead wasteland covered in ruins, tombs and countless pale structures.
Kael immediately recognized them.
Shadow Lion.
Verdant Serpent.
Bone Sovereign.
The System identified the regions.
[Pocket World Map partially generated.]
[Region I: Shadow Domain.]
[Region II: Verdant Domain.]
[Region III: Bone Domain.]
[Unknown regions: 61%.]
Kael frowned.
“Sixty-one percent?”
The pocket world was more unexplored than explored.
His father had only described the three beasts.
He had never described the rest.
Kael moved his observation point farther upward.
The world continued.
Mountain chains.
Deep oceans.
Floating islands.
Caves.
Ruined structures.
Then—
something changed.
The System flickered.
[Warning.]
[Unknown energy detected.]
[Classification unavailable.]
Kael's observation slowed.
He looked toward the center of the world.
Between the three Legendary Beast territories—
was a gigantic circular region.
It was almost perfectly empty.
No vegetation.
No monsters.
No visible ruins.
Just a vast plain of white stone.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“That's strange.”
He moved closer.
The white stone was covered in enormous symbols.
Concentric circles.
Ancient writing.
And at the center—
a black structure.
It resembled a tower.
But it had no entrance.
No windows.
No visible way inside.
The System refused to analyze it.
[Unknown structure.]
[Grade: ???]
[Authority: ???]
[Origin: ???]
[Direct interaction prohibited.]
Kael's expression changed.
“Direct interaction prohibited?”
The System had never used those words casually.
He moved his observation point closer.
The black tower seemed to grow larger.
Then—
two crimson eyes opened.
Kael froze.
The eyes were not on the tower.
They were inside it.
Something was awake.
Kael immediately disconnected the observation.
Kael opened his eyes.He was back in the workshop.
His forehead was covered in sweat.
His breathing was heavier.
The observation had lasted less than a minute.
But it had drained nearly half his mana.
Kael stared at the pocket world key.
“So something is awake.”
He opened the System.
[Observation terminated.]
[Foreign attention detected.]
[Source: Unknown.]
[Observation window closed automatically.]
Kael frowned.
Whatever was inside that tower—
had noticed him.
He didn't know what it was.
He didn't know whether it was hostile.
He didn't even know if it was alive.
But his father's warning suddenly made more sense.
The Legendary Beasts were not the only things imprisoned.
The tower contained something else.
Something even the System couldn't classify.
Kael wrote in his notebook.
Pocket World — Unknown Prison
Central structure
Classification: ???
Threat: Unknown
Do not approach until more information is obtained.
He underlined the final sentence twice.
Kael spent the next several hours analyzing the information he had obtained. The Shadow Domain occupied roughly one-third of the accessible world.
Its landscape was permanently dark.
The trees were enormous.
Some appeared to have no physical roots.
Others moved slightly even when there was no wind.
Kael identified several enormous regions where shadows appeared to move independently.
The Verdant Domain was even larger.
Massive jungle.
Toxic rivers.
Giant plants.
Dense magical forests.
Several mountain ranges covered in green crystal.
The Bone Domain was the strangest.
It appeared almost lifeless.
A massive wasteland.
Ancient tombs.
Ruined cities.
Countless skeletons.
Magical structures.
And one enormous tower standing above everything.
Kael stared at the map.
The Bone Sovereign's territory looked less like a monster's habitat—
and more like a civilization.
“Which means it's probably been building for a very long time.”
That was dangerous.
A monster that simply fought could be studied.
A monster that could build—
could prepare.
Kael added another note.
Bone Sovereign intelligence likely extremely high.
Assume it can modify battlefield before combat.
Then he examined the Verdant Domain.
Something caught his attention.
The edge of the territory contained several enormous scars.
Like something had once attempted to break through from the inside.
Kael zoomed in.
There were ancient stone barriers.
Broken.
Repaired.
Broken again.
Kael frowned.
“Even the pocket world has a containment system.”
The Legendary Beasts were imprisoned.
But perhaps the world itself was their prison.
And the prison required maintenance.
That changed his strategy completely.
He couldn't simply think:
Kill the beast.
He had to understand:
How is the beast being contained?
Because the same system that weakened the beasts might also create hidden weaknesses.
Kael opened his notebook.
He created a new section.
Shadow Lion
Prison function: Unknown.
Possible weakness: Shadow Core destabilization.
Terrain: Darkness forest.
Expected combat: High mobility / ambush / domain control.
Primary counter: Spatial tracking and core disruption.
Verdant Serpent
Prison function: Unknown.
Possible weakness: Sealing energy embedded in scales.
Terrain: Verdant jungle / lakes / poisonous region.
Expected combat: Extreme defense / regeneration / attrition.
Primary counter: Regeneration suppression and penetration.
Bone Sovereign
Prison function: Unknown.
Possible weakness: Unstable Soul Flame.
Terrain: Necromantic wasteland / ruins.
Expected combat: Mage / summon army / battlefield control.
Primary counter: Soul Furnace and reinforcement denial.
Kael looked at the three pages.
Then he wrote one sentence beneath them.
Never fight all three the same way.
He closed the notebook.
Weapons were not the only problem.Kael removed his damaged armor.
He laid the pieces across the forge.
The armor had been designed for ordinary monster combat.
It had survived.
But barely.
Legendary Beast battles would destroy it.
Kael examined the available materials.
Void Crystal.
Adamantite.
Mithril.
Ashen Alloy.
Blackwater scales.
Crimson Core fragments.
Several rare defensive materials from the hunting arc.
He began redesigning the armor.
The new structure required three layers.
The outer layer needed impact resistance.
The middle layer needed mana conductivity.
The inner layer needed flexibility.
He added a small amount of Void Crystal near the chest.
Not enough to create spatial armor.
Just enough to stabilize the material against spatial distortion.
Then he added Blackwater scale fragments along the shoulders and ribs.
Their natural resistance to pressure would help against the Verdant Serpent's physical attacks.
The Ashen Alloy became the outer frame.
Mithril formed the mana circulation network.
Adamantite protected the most vulnerable areas.
Kael worked for hours.
The forge burned continuously.
Finally—
the System scanned the result.
[Armor created.]
Name: Darven Vanguard Armor
Grade: 6 — Epic
Properties:
High Impact Resistance
Mana Conduction
Spatial Stabilization
Poison Resistance
Pressure Resistance
Bloodline Synchronization
Adaptive Reinforcement
Current Integrity: 100%
Kael ran his hand across the armor.
“Better.”
He put it on.
The fit adjusted automatically.
The armor was lighter than his previous equipment.
More flexible.
And far stronger.
Kael moved through several sword forms.
No restrictions.
He activated Metal Control.
The armor responded.
“Good.”
One problem solved.
Kael opened his medical storage. He had antidotes.
Mana restoratives.
Emergency healing compounds.
But Legendary Beasts could create problems ordinary medicine couldn't solve.
So he built specialized kits.
Shadow Resistance Kit
Designed around:
- darkness resistance
- sensory enhancement
- spatial stabilization
- anti-shadow contamination
Verdant Resistance Kit
Designed around:
- poison resistance
- regeneration suppression compounds
- toxin purification
- anti-corrosion medicine
Undead Resistance Kit
Designed around:
- soul stabilization
- necromantic contamination resistance
- anti-curse medicine
- mental clarity compounds
Kael stored each kit separately.
Then added several emergency recovery items to each.
He didn't know whether they would work.
But entering unprepared would be worse.
The next problem was ammunition.Kael's standard ammunition wouldn't be enough.
He needed specialized rounds.
He began manufacturing them.
One by one.
V-01 Penetrator Round
Designed for the Verdant Serpent.
Dense physical projectile.
Minimal mana leakage.
Maximum penetration.
V-01 Severance Round
Designed to disrupt internal mana channels.
Potentially useful against the Shadow Core.
V-01 Spatial Anchor Round
Designed using Void Crystal.
Creates a temporary spatial fixation field.
Potential counter to Shadow Step.
V-01 Suppression Round
Designed for large groups.
Wide-area mana disruption.
Potential use against Bone Sovereign summons.
V-01 Soul-Breaker Prototype
The most dangerous round.
Extremely limited.
Designed to interfere with undead mana structures.
Kael tested one against a magical skeleton he created from his stored materials.
The skeleton collapsed instantly.
Kael's expression became serious.
“This could work.”
But the round was unstable.
He could only manufacture six.
Six.
That was all.
He stored them carefully.
Three days later—Kael returned to the pocket-world key.
His mana reserves had increased.
His equipment was ready.
His preparations were improving.
He activated Remote Observation again.
This time—
he avoided the central tower.
He moved toward the Shadow Domain.
The world changed.
Darkness covered everything.
Kael immediately noticed something.
The darkness wasn't absolute.
There were paths.
Narrow sections where shadows became slightly thinner.
He followed one.
The further he moved—
the stronger the sensation became.
Something was watching.
Kael ignored it.
He reached the inner section.
Then—
he saw the Shadow Lion.
Even from a distance—
Kael understood why it was called Legendary.
The creature was enormous.
Black fur.
Crimson energy flowing across its body.
A mane made entirely of shadow.
Its eyes burned like red stars.
It was lying beneath a gigantic tree.
But something was wrong.
Several enormous chains of light were embedded around its territory.
The chains weren't ordinary metal.
They were magical restraints.
And the Shadow Lion was wounded.
Not recently.
Ancient wounds.
Several areas of its body had faint cracks of unstable shadow energy.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
“The imprisonment really did damage its Shadow Core.”
The Lion suddenly opened its eyes.
Kael froze.
The creature looked directly toward the location of his observation.
It couldn't actually see him.
Could it?
Kael began withdrawing.
Then—
the Lion spoke.
The voice entered his mind.
“Darven.”
Kael's blood ran cold.
It knew.
He immediately ended the observation.
He waited another day.Then—
the Verdant Domain.
This time Kael saw something completely different.
The Verdant Serpent was sleeping.
Its enormous body surrounded a gigantic lake.
Black-and-green scales covered its body.
But several scales appeared fused with pale sealing energy.
They were damaged.
Not broken.
Fused.
Exactly as the old records had suggested.
Kael zoomed in.
Several clusters were clearly weaker than others.
He marked them.
Potential attack locations:
Neck.
Lower side.
Three scale clusters near the spine.
One beneath the left eye.
He saved the coordinates.
Then withdrew.
The Bone Domain.Kael entered carefully.
He immediately saw skeletons.
Thousands.
Maybe tens of thousands.
They moved across the wasteland.
But none attacked.
They were working.
Building.
Repairing structures.
Transporting materials.
Kael's eyes widened.
“This isn't an army waiting for war.”
It was an army maintaining infrastructure.
He followed the flow.
The skeletons all seemed to be moving toward the same enormous structure.
A tower.
The Soul Furnace.
Kael zoomed in.
At the center of the tower—
blue flames burned.
A massive magical structure.
The Soul Furnace was real.
And it was active.
Kael watched.
Then—
a skeleton stopped.
Its skull turned toward the direction of his observation.
Another.
Then another.
The entire region slowly began turning.
Kael immediately withdrew.
His heart was beating faster.
“That was too close.”
He closed the portal.
Three observations.
Three threats.
And one unknown entity at the center.
Kael finally understood the scale of the problem.
His father hadn't simply left him three monsters to defeat.
He had left him an entire prison system.
Kael returned to his notebook. He wrote one final page.
Entering the pocket world requires five conditions.
1. Full physical recovery.
2. All weapons functional.
3. Battle plans complete.
4. Escape methods prepared.
5. Legendary Immortality activated only after entering the correct battle stage.
He paused.
Then added:
Never waste the 100-hour window.
Kael looked toward the ring.
The legendary ability remained sealed.
He didn't activate it.
Not yet.
There was still work to do.
He needed to improve Darven V-01.
He needed more ammunition.
He needed to develop a method to replenish mana during prolonged battles.
And he needed a way to fight when his weapons failed.
Because every battle so far had eventually reduced him to his katana and Metal Control.
Against a Legendary Beast—
that might not be enough.
Kael stood.
Then looked at the Darven katana.
The family weapon had accompanied him from the beginning.
But now—
it was time to ask the weapon for more.
He placed it on the forge.
The moment the blade touched the special platform—
the family crest on the guard began glowing.
Kael's eyes widened.
The same sensation he had felt months ago returned.
Recognition.
The sword responded to him.
The System appeared.
[Darven Heirloom synchronization detected.]
[Bloodline resonance increasing.]
[Potential hidden function detected.]
[Requirement: Fourth Threshold satisfied.]
[Additional requirement: Unknown.]
Kael stared.
The katana had been hiding something all along.
And whatever it was—
it had chosen to reveal itself now.
Kael reached toward the glowing crest.
The sword vibrated.
Then—
a voice echoed through the forge.
Not his father's.
Not the System.
Something far older.
“The first Darven did not wield a sword.”
Kael froze.
The voice continued.
“He forged one.”
The katana's blade began changing.
And Kael realized—
his preparations were about to enter their next stage.
