THE LAST & THE FIRST : Rulebreaker

Chapter 87 — The Shadow Lion's Trial

  • Next Chapter

The Shadow Ravager's final shadow disappeared.

Kael stood alone beneath the black trees.

For several seconds, he remained completely still.

The battle had ended.

But the feeling of being watched had not.

He could still sense it.

A presence somewhere deeper within the darkness.

The Shadow Lion.

Kael slowly lowered the Darven Origin Blade.

“You're testing me.”

No answer came.

The forest remained silent.

Kael waited.

Nothing.

He looked at the twelve defeated creatures.

Their bodies were gone.

Their shadows were gone.

But the information from the battle remained inside his mind.

The creatures had adapted.

Their movement patterns had changed.

Their false bodies had become more convincing.

And every time Kael developed a counter—

the pack created a new method.

That wasn't random behavior.

The Lion had been controlling them.

Or at the very least—

watching through them.

Kael opened his notebook.

He wrote:

Shadow Lion Trial — First Stage

Objective appears to be observation, not elimination.

Enemy intelligence extremely high.

Beast is capable of indirectly controlling or influencing territorial creatures.

Do not reveal all combat methods unnecessarily.

He closed the notebook.

Then looked toward the deeper forest.

The first ancient structure.

The first monster pack.

The first indirect test.

None of it was accidental.

The Lion wanted to know what kind of hunter Kael was.

So Kael decided to answer.

Not with words.

With action.

He stepped forward.

The outer Shadow Domain had been dangerous.

The middle region was worse.

But the inner territory was something else entirely.

The moment Kael crossed the boundary—

the atmosphere changed.

The darkness became denser.

The air itself seemed heavier.

His Vanguard Armor immediately responded.

[Environmental pressure increasing.]

[Shadow density: Extreme.]

[Spatial distortion: Moderate.]

[Host sensory efficiency: Reduced by 21%.]

Kael frowned.

Twenty-one percent.

And he hadn't even reached the Lion's true territory.

He activated Shadow Configuration on the armor.

The Void Crystal modules responded.

The spatial field spread around him.

His sensory efficiency improved.

[Sensory reduction: 9%.]

Kael nodded.

“Much better.”

He took another step.

Then stopped.

The forest ahead appeared normal.

Trees.

Roots.

Black grass.

Nothing unusual.

But Kael knew better.

He looked down.

His shadow was pointing north.

The light source—whatever it was—came from above.

Yet the shadow moved in the opposite direction.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“The environment isn't obeying normal physics.”

He touched the ground.

Cold.

Not physically cold.

Magically cold.

A faint pulse travelled through the soil.

Kael activated Network Sense.

Nothing.

He switched to Spatial Detection.

This time—

something appeared.

The forest wasn't continuous.

There were several overlapping layers.

A normal physical layer.

A shadow layer.

And a third layer.

A thin spatial layer between them.

Kael stared.

“So that's how it moves.”

The Shadow Lion's Shadow Step wasn't simply teleportation.

It was movement between overlapping layers of space.

That explained why ordinary tracking methods failed.

Kael immediately wrote it down.

Shadow Step appears to involve temporary transition into a secondary shadow-space layer.

Spatial Anchors should interfere with transition points rather than the beast itself.

He looked up.

A narrow path appeared between two trees.

Kael hadn't noticed it before.

There were no footprints.

No plants growing on it.

Just black soil.

He walked toward it.

The moment he stepped onto the path—

the forest behind him disappeared.

Kael stopped.

He turned.

Nothing.

No path.

No trees.

Only darkness.

Then a System message appeared.

[Spatial isolation detected.]

[Current location has become temporarily disconnected from outer territory.]

[Warning: Return function unavailable.]

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“So you closed the exit.”

A voice came from the darkness.

“You noticed.”

Kael turned.

The Shadow Lion's voice.

It still wasn't physically present.

But it was everywhere.

Kael slowly raised his V-01X.

“Where are you?”

A quiet laugh echoed.

“Why does it matter?”

Kael's expression remained calm.

“Because I don't fight things I can't locate.”

“Then locate me.”

Silence.

The trial had started.

Kael activated every detection system.

Mana Detection.

Spatial Detection.

Danger Sense.

Network Sense.

Nothing.

Then—

a shadow moved.

Kael fired.

BANG!

The spatial anchor struck the ground.

A small circle of controlled space appeared.

Nothing happened.

Another shadow moved.

Kael turned.

Nothing.

The Lion laughed.

“You are looking.”

Kael didn't answer.

“That is your weakness.”

Another shadow moved behind him.

Kael didn't turn.

Instead—

he looked at the ground.

The shadow wasn't moving.

Its reflection was.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

“False information.”

The shadow wasn't the Lion.

It was a projection.

Kael stepped backward.

Another shadow appeared in front.

Then another.

Then dozens.

The entire forest filled with black silhouettes.

Each resembled the same enormous lion.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The Lion spoke.

“Which one is real?”

Kael smiled.

“I don't know.”

The shadows moved closer.

Kael didn't attack.

“That's the point.”

The Lion was testing his response to uncertainty.

If he tried to attack every target—

he would waste mana.

If he waited—

the shadows would surround him.

Kael needed another solution.

He raised one hand.

Metal fragments emerged from his Space Ring.

Small.

Almost weightless.

He scattered them across the battlefield.

The fragments floated.

Each carried a tiny spatial marker.

The shadows moved.

The metal fragments reacted.

Some distorted.

Some didn't.

Kael watched.

The false shadows passed through the markers without affecting them.

One shadow caused a small spatial distortion.

Kael smiled.

“There.”

He raised V-01X.

Configuration III.

Spatial Anchor.

BANG!

The projectile struck the identified shadow.

The darkness exploded outward.

For one second—

the true form of the Lion became visible.

Massive.

Black.

Crimson.

It stood twenty meters away.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

He had found it.

But the Lion was already moving.

It disappeared.

Kael's danger sense triggered.

He turned.

A claw came from the darkness.

CLANG!

The Origin Blade blocked it.

The impact drove Kael backward.

His boots carved through the soil.

The Lion's eyes glowed.

It was enormous.

Far larger than the creatures Kael had fought before.

Its black mane seemed to absorb the surrounding darkness.

Crimson energy moved through its body.

Kael's first thought was simple.

Fast.

His second was worse.

This is only a fraction of its strength.

The Lion attacked again.

Kael parried.

CLANG!

Another claw.

Kael ducked.

A third.

He jumped.

The Lion's tail swept across the ground.

Kael activated Metal Control.

A metal barrier formed.

BOOM!

The barrier shattered.

Kael was thrown sideways.

He rolled and stood.

The Lion didn't pursue.

It watched him.

Kael understood.

This wasn't the real fight.

The Lion was measuring him.

Kael changed his stance.

“Again.”

The Lion attacked.

This time—

Kael didn't block.

He stepped forward.

The claw passed beside him.

The Origin Blade flashed.

SLASH!

A shallow cut appeared across the Lion's shoulder.

The Lion stopped.

The wound closed.

Instantly.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

“Your regeneration is faster in direct darkness.”

The Lion smiled.

“Good.”

Kael's expression changed.

It had deliberately allowed the wound.

He had learned something—

but the Lion had learned something too.

It had discovered how Kael attacked.

The Lion vanished.

Kael immediately activated spatial detection.

Too late.

The Lion emerged from the shadow beneath his own feet.

Kael jumped.

The claw missed his chest.

But the pressure threw him upward.

The Lion followed.

Kael raised his V-01X.

Configuration V.

Close Combat.

He blocked one claw.

Then another.

The Lion attacked with its jaws.

Kael twisted.

The massive teeth snapped shut beside him.

Kael fired the weapon at point-blank range.

BANG!

The shot struck the Lion's chest.

The beast was pushed backward.

But instead of being injured—

the darkness around the wound thickened.

The damage disappeared.

Kael frowned.

“Domain regeneration.”

He landed.

The Lion remained still.

Kael's mind raced.

His normal attacks weren't enough.

Spatial Anchor had worked.

But only temporarily.

The armor's shadow resistance helped.

But not enough.

The Origin Blade could cut it.

But the wounds closed immediately.

He needed the Core.

The Shadow Core.

Kael focused on the Lion's chest.

There.

A faint black-red pulse.

Every few seconds.

The core was unstable.

But the darkness in the domain was stabilizing it.

Kael understood.

He didn't need to destroy the Lion.

He needed to separate the Lion from the darkness supporting it.

The Lion suddenly stepped backward.

The darkness disappeared.

Kael blinked.

The forest changed.

The black trees were gone.

He stood on an enormous flat plain.

No cover.

No shadows.

A pale light filled the area.

The Lion stood opposite him.

This time—

there were no environmental shadows.

Kael's eyes widened.

The Lion's body became easier to see.

Its mane dimmed.

The crimson energy around its body weakened.

The System appeared.

[Shadow Domain suppression detected.]

[Target's external regeneration significantly reduced.]

[Shadow movement restricted.]

Kael immediately understood.

The Lion had created this environment intentionally.

It was testing him without its greatest advantage.

The beast lowered its head.

“Fight.”

Kael raised the Origin Blade.

He stepped forward.

The Lion charged.

This time—

the difference was enormous.

Without the full Darkness Domain—

Kael could track it.

He parried the first claw.

CLANG!

The second came.

Kael moved.

The third—

he countered.

SLASH!

The Origin Blade cut across the Lion's side.

The wound appeared.

It did not immediately disappear.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

The Lion attacked.

Kael countered.

The battle became a true exchange.

Claw.

Parry.

Tail.

Dodge.

Bite.

Step.

Kael struck again.

SLASH!

Another wound.

The Lion backed away.

Its crimson eyes narrowed.

Kael advanced.

His Adaptive Edge activated.

The blade became thinner.

He targeted the spaces between the Lion's muscles.

The Lion shifted.

Its body hardened.

The blade changed.

Kael adjusted.

The Lion attacked.

Kael blocked.

The force pushed him back.

He recovered.

The Lion attacked again.

Kael stepped sideways.

The Origin Blade followed.

SLASH!

The shoulder.

SLASH!

The chest.

SLASH!

The foreleg.

The Lion roared.

Its wounds began healing.

But slowly.

Kael saw the opportunity.

The battle continued.

Five minutes.

Ten.

The Lion became faster.

Kael became more efficient.

His mana began falling.

The Lion's injuries accumulated.

But—

the Lion was learning.

It began changing its attack patterns.

The first exchange had been:

claw, claw, tail.

Now:

tail, bite, claw.

Then:

fake retreat, shadow claw, body strike.

Then:

feint, leap, simultaneous claw attack.

Kael blocked.

Dodged.

Countered.

But the distance between them remained.

The Lion wasn't just powerful.

It was an experienced predator.

Kael realized something.

The Lion had been imprisoned for thousands of years.

It had probably spent an unimaginable amount of time fighting creatures inside the prison.

Its combat experience was beyond anything Kael had encountered.

That was the real problem.

Kael had level.

Skills.

Weapons.

Adaptation.

But the Lion had experience accumulated across millennia.

Kael gritted his teeth.

Then—

the Lion changed again.

Its crimson eyes flashed.

A concentrated wave of darkness erupted from its body.

Kael's armor absorbed part of it.

But the wave pushed him backward.

The Lion charged.

Kael barely raised the Origin Blade.

BOOM!

He was thrown across the plain.

He rolled.

The Lion followed.

Kael stood.

The beast attacked.

Kael blocked.

A second strike.

He blocked.

A third.

His arms shook.

The fourth struck him.

Kael was thrown backward.

The Vanguard Armor cracked.

The System warned him.

[Armor integrity: 71%.]

Kael breathed heavily.

The Lion stopped.

It didn't pursue.

Instead—

it looked at him.

“You are stronger than I expected.”

Kael wiped dust from his armor.

“I'm not finished.”

The Lion smiled.

“Neither am I.”

The darkness returned.

The entire plain disappeared.

Kael's expression changed.

The test was over.

Or perhaps—

it had just entered another stage.

The world around Kael transformed.

He stood in an endless black void.

No ground.

No sky.

No visible direction.

Kael looked down.

There was nothing beneath him.

Yet he was standing.

The Lion was nowhere.

Then—

a single red eye appeared.

Then another.

Then ten.

Then hundreds.

The entire darkness was filled with crimson eyes.

Kael tightened his grip.

The voices began whispering.

Not the Lion.

Memories.

His father's voice.

His mother's voice.

The cries of the Darven estate.

Kael froze.

He knew these memories.

But they weren't real.

The Lion was using them.

The voices became louder.

You weren't strong enough.

You couldn't save them.

You ran.

Kael closed his eyes.

He understood.

The Lion wasn't attacking his body.

It was attacking his perception.

Kael took a slow breath.

“I know they're not real.”

The whispers continued.

His father's image appeared.

Blood-soaked.

Smiling.

“Kael…”

Kael's fingers tightened.

The image approached.

“You failed.”

Kael stared.

Then shook his head.

“No.”

The illusion paused.

Kael's voice became steady.

“I failed once.”

The illusion changed.

His father looked disappointed.

“You couldn't protect your family.”

Kael closed his eyes again.

“I couldn't.”

Silence.

“But that doesn't mean I will always fail.”

The illusion cracked.

The darkness shook.

The Lion's voice finally emerged.

“Good.”

Kael opened his eyes.

The false world shattered.

He was back in the forest.

The Lion stood several meters away.

Kael didn't attack.

The Lion didn't attack.

They simply stared at each other.

After several seconds—

the Lion spoke.

“You understand the difference.”

Kael frowned.

“Between what?”

“Fear and weakness.”

Kael remained silent.

The Lion continued.

“A weak creature hides from fear.”

“A strong creature acknowledges it.”

Kael slowly lowered his sword.

“You're testing more than my strength.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The Lion's expression became unreadable.

“Because I will not give my successor to someone who cannot survive the prison.”

Kael's eyes widened.

“Successor?”

The Lion looked toward the center of its territory.

Then back.

“You came here seeking power.”

Kael didn't deny it.

“But power is not enough.”

The Lion slowly stood.

Its body seemed even larger now.

“If you defeat me…”

It paused.

“…you may inherit something.”

Kael stared.

“What?”

The Lion's crimson eyes narrowed.

“That depends on whether you earn it.”

Kael looked at the beast.

“You've known about me since I entered.”

“Yes.”

“You could have attacked me.”

“Yes.”

“But you didn't.”

The Lion smiled.

“Not yet.”

Kael's expression sharpened.

So the true battle still hadn't begun.

The trials were preparing him.

Or—

perhaps judging him.

The Lion turned toward the enormous black tree.

Three ancient chains surrounded it.

Kael now noticed something he hadn't seen before.

Each chain was connected to the Lion's territory.

But one chain was cracked.

The Lion looked at it.

“When that chain breaks…”

Kael waited.

“…the real battle begins.”

Kael stared at the damaged chain.

It wasn't simply restraint.

It was a timer.

The prison was weakening.

The Shadow Lion continued.

“You have little time.”

Kael's expression became serious.

“How long?”

The Lion looked directly at him.

“Not enough for you to become stronger.”

A faint crimson glow appeared in its eyes.

“Only enough for you to become smarter.”

The Lion disappeared.

Kael remained alone.

Then the System appeared.

[Shadow Lion Trial — Stage One complete.]

[Combat understanding increased.]

[Shadow Domain analysis: 18%]

[Shadow Core analysis: 11%]

[Prison structure analysis: 9%]

[New objective unlocked.]

[Stabilize the damaged Shadow Prison Chain.]

[Failure may trigger premature Legendary Beast combat.]

Kael stared at the objective.

“Stabilize the chain?”

He looked toward the black tree.

The cracked chain was already glowing.

Small fragments were falling from it.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

So the trial wasn't merely a combat test.

The Lion wanted to see whether Kael could understand the prison itself.

Kael opened his notebook.

He turned to a fresh page.

At the top, he wrote:

SHADOW LION — STAGE ONE

The beast is not the only problem.

The prison is failing.

If the chain breaks too early, I may be forced into the real battle before I'm ready.

He looked toward the deeper darkness.

Then added:

New priority: stabilize the prison before fighting the Beast.

Kael closed the notebook.

He raised V-01X.

“Fine.”

His eyes hardened.

“You wanted me to become smarter.”

He looked toward the cracked chain.

“Let's see if I can fix your prison.”

Far beyond the black tree—

the Shadow Lion watched.

And for the first time—

it was no longer merely observing Kael.

It was waiting to see whether he could succeed.

Because if he failed—

the chain would break.

And the Shadow Lion would be free to use its full power.
