The Last Rule of Death
Chapter 50 - The Soul You Cannot Steal
The last search query remained on Etzel’s communicator.
SEARCH QUERY: HOW TO SEVER A SUMMON FROM ITS MASTER WITHOUT DESTROYING THE SOUL
Nobody spoke.
Saeva’s fingers were still curled around Etzel’s sleeve. Her small, delicate frame—roughly the height of a young child, yet distinctly otherworldly with her folded wings and sharp, humanoid features—pressed close to his arm. She was F-Rank, physically fragile, but deeply anchored to him.
DK stared at the words for several seconds. Then he turned toward the Authority transport. “We return.”
Etzel didn’t move. “No.”
DK looked back. Halven did the same.
“Mireth is searching for a way to remove your summons from you,” DK said.
“I noticed.”
“Then we return to a defensible position.”
Etzel glanced toward the Ancient Tree. “No.”
Halven sighed. “I assume there’s a longer version of that answer.”
“There is.”
“Wonderful.”
Etzel looked toward the containment teams spreading through the forest. “If Mireth wants us, going back means taking what it wants straight into a building full of people.”
“Authority headquarters is considerably more secure than this forest.”
“Against monsters.” Halven’s expression tightened. Etzel continued. “Mireth doesn’t need to break down a wall. It needs one terminal. One person. One mistake.”
DK understood first. “You want to remain here.”
“I want to choose where it finds us.”
Renn’s voice came through the communicator. “Deymar.”
“Yes?”
“That is not a tactical plan.”
Etzel considered it. “Bait.”
“That is worse.”
“More accurate, though.”
“Etzel.”
He looked at Saeva. The pain from severing their Soul Link still lingered behind his eyes. A dull pressure. Every few breaths, it sharpened.
But the bond itself was stable. Saeva was there. Alive. Whole. And afraid.
Mireth had already touched the link once. If it wanted another attempt, Etzel preferred to know where that attempt happened.
“Evacuate everyone we don’t need,” he said.
Halven looked toward Edgar. Including him. Especially him.
“Keep a containment team outside the immediate area. No automated systems close enough for Mireth to exploit.”
Renn was silent. Then: “You’re deliberately exposing the Soul Links.”
“Yes.”
“To something that just tried to copy one.”
“Yes.”
Another pause. “I hate this plan.”
Etzel adjusted his spear. “That makes two of us.”
DK looked at him. “Three.”
Saeva raised her hand. “Four.”
Etzel stared at her. “You too?”
Saeva nodded seriously. “Bad plan.”
Etzel paused. Two words. Not just repeating his or DK's commands. She was combining concepts. Her cognitive grasp was expanding—whether from the sheer stress of Mireth's attack or her constant exposure to Etzel's mind through the link, he wasn't sure. But she was changing.
Halven laughed once.
Etzel looked around. “I’m surrounded by negativity.”
Edgar refused to leave. For almost thirty seconds.
“I came back for the Tree.”
“And you saw it.”
“I want to stay.”
“No.”
“You’re staying.”
Etzel pointed at himself. “I make poor decisions professionally.”
Edgar frowned. “That doesn’t make sense.”
“It will when you’re older.”
“I’m seventeen.”
“Exactly.”
Edgar folded his arms. “What if the Tree disappears?”
Etzel looked at the Ancient Tree. Its impossible lights continued moving beneath the bark. “Then it disappears.”
“You don’t know that it’ll still be here.”
“No.”
Edgar seemed surprised by the answer.
Etzel shrugged. “I don’t know lots of things.”
“You don’t act like it.”
“That’s a dangerous misunderstanding.”
One of the Authority scouts approached. Edgar didn’t move.
Etzel’s expression hardened. “You were rejected because you weren’t ready.”
Edgar looked toward the Tree. “I know.”
“Then prove you can hear the answer.”
That landed. Edgar’s jaw tightened. He finally turned toward the scout. Before leaving, he stopped. “Why are you staying?”
Etzel looked at DK. Then Saeva. “Because the thing coming here is coming for me.”
“That’s a terrible reason.”
Etzel smiled. “See? You’re learning already.”
Edgar almost smiled back. Then he left.
Night swallowed the Wild Belt quickly.
The Authority containment teams withdrew beyond the agreed perimeter. No vehicles nearby. No active terminals. No unnecessary electronics.
Only four people remained near the Ancient Tree. Etzel. DK. Saeva. Halven.
The Tree stood behind them. Its roots disappeared beneath the earth like the bones of something too large to bury.
Etzel sat on one of those roots. Waiting. He hated waiting. Saeva sat beside him. DK stood several meters away. Halven had taken position opposite them.
Minutes passed. Nothing. Then more minutes.
Etzel looked toward DK. He didn’t speak. He used the Soul Link.
Anything?
DK’s response came through the bond. No.
Etzel shifted. Very exciting.
You chose this.
I choose many things I later regret.
Saeva’s presence brushed against the link. Quiet.
Etzel looked at her. I am being quiet.
Saeva shook her head. Forest.
Etzel stopped. The night had changed. No wind. No insects. Nothing moving through the undergrowth.
Then Saeva lifted her head. Coming.
Etzel stood. His spear came into his hand. DK drew the Hellscript Greatblade.
Halven saw the movement and raised his weapon. “Where?”
Etzel listened. Nothing.
Then the soil near DK moved. A black filament emerged. Thin. Almost delicate. Another followed. Then another. They crawled across the ground. Not toward the Tree. Not toward Etzel.
Toward DK.
Etzel’s pulse quickened. “There.”
DK didn’t move. The first filament reached his boot. The Infernal Sovereign Set reacted immediately. Hellscript runes ignited across the armor.
If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
The filament recoiled. Smoke rose from its tip.
Then it returned. Slower. Testing.
Etzel watched. Mireth had learned. The filament avoided the brightest runes. It climbed along gaps between plates. Not attacking. Searching.
Etzel felt something through his connection to DK. Pressure. Cold. Foreign.
DK’s voice entered his mind. Now?
Not yet.
The filament climbed higher. Etzel gritted his teeth. It wasn’t interested in DK’s body. It was feeling for something behind it. The connection. The Soul Link.
Then—contact.
Pain stabbed through Etzel’s skull.
SYSTEM ALERT
[Foreign Soul Contact Detected.]
His hand tightened around the spear. DK staggered half a step. The filament stretched between them despite having no physical connection to Etzel.
Etzel could feel it pulling. Not DK’s body. Something deeper. The doorway to Soul Space shuddered.
DK’s presence shifted. Etzel.
“Wait.”
The pressure increased. Etzel forced himself to observe. He needed Mireth committed. Needed enough of the structure exposed. The filament tightened. DK’s soul pulled against the bond.
Etzel’s vision blurred. “Now.”
DK moved.
ABILITY INITIATED
[Infernal Severance]
The Greatblade ignited. One strike. The filament split. Red-black fire raced through it. The remaining strands recoiled into the ground. Gone.
Etzel exhaled. Halven lowered his weapon slightly. “That worked.”
Etzel looked at the scorched ground. Too easy.
His stomach dropped. “No.”
Halven turned. “What?”
Etzel looked toward Saeva. The earth beneath her exploded.
“Saeva!”
Black filament erupted around her. Not three strands. Dozens. A net. It closed before she could escape.
Saeva screamed. The sound ripped through the Soul Link.
Etzel moved. “SAEVA!”
He struck the nearest filament. The spear passed through one strand. Two more replaced it. Saeva was lifted from the ground.
DK turned instantly. The Greatblade rose.
Etzel understood. DK had never been the target. He had been the demonstration. The obvious choice. Strongest summon. Most dangerous summon. Most valuable summon.
That was how Etzel had thought. And Mireth had counted on it.
Saeva was weaker. Lower Rank. Younger. Her Soul Link was less complex. Easier to study. Easier to isolate. Easier to steal.
Etzel had read Mireth wrong. Again.
“DK, don’t cut!”
The Greatblade stopped.
Saeva cried out. Etzel reached through the bond. I’m here.
Pain answered him. The filaments were inside the structure again. But this time they weren’t merely tracing it. They were pulling at the boundary between Saeva and Etzel. Separating. Testing where one soul ended and the other began.
Etzel immediately thought of the solution he had used before. Close the Soul Link. Remove the reference.
He reached for it. The System reacted.
SYSTEM WARNING
[Soul Strain Detected.]
[Repeated Forced Interruption Risk: HIGH.]
[Soul-Link Stability May Be Compromised.]
Etzel froze. He couldn’t do it again. Not safely.
Saeva screamed.
DK stepped closer. “Can I cut it?”
“No.”
“Etzel.”
“I said no.”
“If it takes her—”
“I KNOW.”
Silence. Etzel forced himself to breathe. Think.
Saeva was being pulled. But not physically. The filament wanted the Soul Link. Wanted to understand how to separate it without destroying what was attached. Exactly what Mireth had searched for.
Etzel felt Saeva weakening. Hold on.
Her answer came immediately. No.
Etzel blinked. Saeva?
Her small body twisted inside the filament. I fight.
Something changed. Energy surged through the Soul Link. Not from Etzel. From Saeva. She pushed. Straight into the foreign structure.
The filament convulsed. Etzel felt it. For the first time—Mireth lost control.
“Saeva?”
She screamed again. But she kept pushing.
DK looked at Etzel. “What is she doing?”
Etzel didn’t answer. He was watching. Feeling.
The filament stabilized whenever Saeva weakened. Destabilized whenever she resisted. Why?
It had copied the shape of their connection. It understood direction. Flow. Structure. But—not choice.
Etzel remembered the first time Saeva had appeared. The first time DK had chosen to follow an order instead of merely obeying it. Every argument. Every joke. Every refusal. Every moment they had acted independently.
Etzel had always thought of the Soul Link as part of Limited Necromancer. A mechanic. A bond created by his Ability. But that wasn’t all it was.
Saeva wasn’t attached to him like equipment. DK wasn’t a sword stored in Soul Space. They could resist. Agree. Choose. The bond had two sides.
Etzel looked at the trembling filament. “You can see the connection.” It tightened around Saeva. “But you don’t understand why it stays connected.”
The System appeared.
SYSTEM ALERT
[Flaw Witnessed.]
| ANALYSIS COMPLETE | DETAILS |
| Witnessed Requirement | Reciprocal Soul Consent. |
| Observation | Stable Soul Link requires recognition from both linked souls. |
| Limitation | Forced imitation cannot reproduce reciprocal recognition. |
Etzel smiled. Not because it was funny. Because he finally had the answer.
“Found you.”
DK looked at him. “What?”
Etzel closed his eyes. And instead of closing the Soul Link—he opened it. Fully.
Pain struck instantly. Saeva gasped.
The connection widened. Her presence flooded Etzel’s mind. Fear. Pain. Anger. Trust.
And underneath all of it—choice.
Mireth’s filament tried to copy the expanded structure. It couldn’t. The black strands spasmed. Etzel felt the foreign presence lose coherence.
Saeva.
Her eyes opened.
Trust me.
Her answer was weak. But immediate. Always.
Etzel pushed. Saeva pushed back. Not against him. With him. Two souls. Two directions. One bond.
The foreign structure was trapped between them.
SYSTEM ALERT
[Foreign Structure Rejected.]
The filament began tearing away from Saeva.
DK understood. “Now?”
Etzel opened his eyes. “Now.”
The Hellscript Greatblade fell.
ABILITY INITIATED
[Infernal Severance]
Red-black flame erupted. The exposed filament split. Then another. Then all of them.
Fire raced through the black network. The structure shrieked. Not like an animal. Like metal remembering pain.
Saeva fell. Etzel caught her. The last filaments burned around them.
Then—one tiny strand moved.
Etzel saw it. Too late. It vanished beneath the soil. Gone.
Saeva clung to him. Etzel checked the Soul Link. There. Stable. Whole.
The System confirmed it.
SYSTEM STATUS
[Soul Integrity: Stable.]
Etzel exhaled. Then another message appeared.
SYSTEM WARNING
[Foreign Pattern Extraction Detected.]
His relief vanished.
SYSTEM WARNING
[Extraction Depth: Superficial.]
DK saw his expression. “What?”
Etzel looked toward the place where the final filament had disappeared. “It took something.”
DK’s grip tightened. “From Saeva?”
Etzel checked the bond again. Nothing missing. No wound. No absence. “I don’t know what.”
That answer frightened him more than he wanted to admit. Saeva shifted in his arms.
Then the System changed again.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION
[Summon Growth Condition Satisfied.]
Etzel blinked. “What?”
Saeva looked up.
STATUS UPDATE
[Saeva — Level Increased.]
[Level 3.]
[Soul Resistance Improved.]
Saeva stared at the notification. Then at Etzel. “Three.”
Etzel smiled. This time genuinely. “Three.”
She was speaking more clearly now. The Level increase hadn't just fortified her soul; it was building her mind.
Saeva straightened slightly despite still being in his arms.
DK lowered the Greatblade. “She earned it.”
Etzel looked at the burned ground. “Yes.” Then at Saeva. “Definitely.”
Her Rank hadn’t changed. Still F. But that didn’t matter. Not tonight. She had resisted something designed specifically to tear her away from him. And she had done it before Etzel understood how.
Later, while Halven coordinated the returning containment teams, DK approached Etzel. Saeva was several meters away. Walking. Stopping. Looking back. Then walking farther.
Etzel had noticed. He hadn’t said anything.
DK had. “Why did you assume I was the target?”
Etzel looked at him. “Because you’re stronger.”
“Mireth is not seeking strength.” Etzel was quiet. DK continued. “It is seeking understanding.”
Etzel looked toward Saeva. Simpler Soul Link. Lower Rank. Less developed structure. A better specimen.
“I read it wrong.”
“Yes.”
Etzel glanced at DK. “You could pretend to hesitate.”
“No.”
“Supportive.”
“You corrected the error.”
Etzel shook his head. “Saeva did.”
DK looked toward her. She had walked ten meters away. Stopped. Then turned. “Etzel.”
“I’m here.”
She took another step. “Still?”
Etzel understood. She wasn’t testing distance. She was testing the bond. Making sure Mireth hadn’t changed it.
“Still here.”
Saeva moved farther. The Soul Link stretched normally. No pain. No interference. She stopped. Then returned.
Etzel didn’t move toward her. Didn’t call her back. When she reached him, she touched his hand. “Still.”
Etzel nodded. “Still.”
DK said nothing. For once, Etzel appreciated it.
They left the Wild Belt before dawn.
The Ancient Tree remained under Authority containment. Edgar had been moved to safety. The Mireth residue was sealed.
None of that made Etzel feel better.
He sat inside the transport with Saeva asleep beside him. DK opposite. Halven near the front. Rain began tapping against the armored roof.
Etzel closed his eyes. His head still hurt. Level 14. Saeva Level 3. A new understanding of Soul Links. Progress. He should have been satisfied. Instead, he kept thinking about the filament that escaped.
Foreign Pattern Extraction Detected. Superficial.
What did superficial mean when the thing studying you learned from scraps?
His communicator activated. Renn. Etzel opened one eye.
“If this is bad news, wait five minutes.”
“It’s strange news.”
“Those are usually worse.”
Halven turned. Renn continued.
“Mireth’s Authority integration remains at eleven percent.”
Etzel sat upright. “Quarantine is holding?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“But a new data structure appeared.”
Etzel’s stomach tightened. “What kind?”
“I don’t know.”
Etzel sighed. “Apparently that’s the phrase of the day.”
“I don’t think it’s a Hunter record.”
DK looked up. Etzel’s attention sharpened. “What is it?”
Renn hesitated. “A summon.”
Nobody moved. Etzel stared at the communicator. “That isn’t possible.”
“I know.”
“I’m the Necromancer.”
“I also know that.”
The Limited Necromancer interface flickered.
Etzel froze. Not Authority. His interface.
A broken notification appeared.
SYSTEM ALERT
[Foreign Summon Pattern Detected.]
[Origin: Unknown.]
[Soul Status: INVALID.]
[Bond Status: IMITATED.]
“No.”
Halven turned fully. “What?”
Etzel stood. “Mireth didn’t steal Saeva’s soul.”
“That sounds good.”
“It copied enough of the structure to try something else.”
The transport accelerated.
Renn’s voice sharpened. “Etzel, we have a perimeter alert.”
“Where?”
“Authority facility.”
A camera feed opened. Rain. Night. The outer gate. Something stood beyond the security barrier. Small. Human-shaped.
Etzel stared. Beside him, Saeva made a frightened sound.
The figure lifted its head.
Her face. Saeva’s face. Same hair. Same body.
Almost. The proportions were subtly wrong. Too precise in some places. Unfinished in others.
And the eyes—black. Not dark. Black.
Saeva grabbed Etzel’s arm.
The thing outside looked directly into the camera. Its mouth opened. “Etzel.”
Saeva recoiled. Her own voice.
DK drew the Hellscript Greatblade.
The construct tilted its head. Listening. Searching. Then it spoke again. “Mine.”
Etzel’s System erupted.
SYSTEM WARNING
[Foreign Summon Construct Detected.]
[Classification: UNRESOLVED.]
[WARNING: CONSTRUCT IS ATTEMPTING SOUL-LINK RECOGNITION.]
The false Saeva lifted one hand toward the Authority facility. Real Saeva’s grip tightened around Etzel.
He felt something brush the edge of his Soul Link. Waiting. Like a knock at a door.
Etzel stared at the screen. “Don’t answer it.”
