The Legendary Method Actor
Chapter 338: The Compromise
Ray’s eyes narrowed when he understood what the Alpha said.
He made some movements and grunts back in response.
“We understand.”
The Alpha gave a slow, deep nod of respect to the Apex, then turned and vanished into the dense foliage, leading its troop to safety.
With the gorillas entirely gone, Svane finally dropped his battle stance. The golden light faded from his sword as he let out a heavy, rattling sigh of relief.
"Great work, my Lord. To subdue a lethal threat of that magnitude without shedding a single drop of blood... you handled that situation flawlessly."
Svane praised earnestly, looking up at the watchtower.
Ray leaped down from the watchtower ledge, utilizing Stoic Assassin's ‘Flowing Shadow Technique’ to land soundlessly on the packed dirt beside his vanguard.
"Do not relax just yet, Svane. The Alpha did not attack us because it was not trying to conquer this territory. It was running away from something."
Ray said, his expression grim.
"Running? From what?"
Svane said as he frowned.
"I don't know, but it gave me a warning before it left. It told me: 'Big dark monster coming. Eat flesh.'"
Svane was visibly alarmed. The veteran Aegis’ tactical mind immediately analyzed the situation. An entire troop of mutated giant gorillas was a natural disaster; they possessed enough raw power to rip through a small mercenary army.
"My Lord, if a troop of giant gorillas of that size and power was terrified enough to abandon their territory and flee, whatever is hunting them is a high-level threat. We must abort this excursion. I strongly urge that we retreat to Greywood Keep immediately and fortify the walls."
Svane said, his voice dropping an octave in utter seriousness.
Ray shook his head slowly, looking past the ruined pillars toward the deep woods.
"We cannot simply run, Svane. Think about the situation, the Vance Merchant Group relies on this specific site for the Whisper Stone. Our local miners and the mercenary escorts will be walking into this exact clearing in a matter of days. If there is an apex-level monster hunting in this sector, it will slaughter our people and shatter our domain’s recently recovered economy. As a son of the Lord of Greywood, it is my duty to help in any way I can. To identify this threat before it hits the domain’s citizens."
Ray explained, his tone firm.
Svane ground his teeth, torn as he tried to understand Ray’s reason to stay and scout and his sworn oath to protect Ray’s life.
"I understand your rationale, my Lord, but it is still far too dangerous. You cannot risk yourself like this. Let us pull back to the Keep, and we can look for a specialized stealth scout to investigate."
Svane argued.
"By the time we find a specialized scout, the trail will be cold, or our miners will already be dead. But your tactical assessment is correct. Sitting in the open is foolish. So, I am willing to compromise."
Ray countered. He looked at Svane, a faint, calculating smile touching his lips.
"Compromise?"
Svane echoed cautiously.
"We will retreat, we will pull back to a higher location overlooking these ruins, well out of the immediate danger zone. Once we are there, I will carve a Solhaven runic concealment array around our position. We will be entirely invisible to magical and physical detection."
Ray proposed.
Svane nodded slowly, finding the plan acceptable so far.
"And who will do the scouting?"
Ray simply looked down at his own shadow.
As he felt Ray’s gaze, the shadow below writhed, and Nox golden eyes opened looking back. Then a short moment later Nox materialized. The void-malkin stretched its shadowy limbs, letting out a sharp, inquisitive trill.
"Nox will stay here in the ruins and will be our eyes.”
Ray explained.
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
Instantly, a wave of telepathic indignation flooded Ray’s mind.
Excuse me?!You want me to scout? You just said there's a dark, flesh-eating monster coming!... Fine. Fine! But if I see a ghost down there, I am leaving. I don't do ghosts. I have standards.
Nox’s voice grumbled in Ray’s mind.
Ray suppressed a laugh, gently scratching the void-malkin behind its shadowy ears to placate it.
Svane let out a heavy sigh, realizing he could not dissuade his stubborn, brilliant Lord. The compromise was highly tactical, mitigating nearly all the possible risks while still achieving the objective.
"Very well, my Lord. But I have one absolute condition. The moment you identify the threat, or at the very first sign of unmanageable danger, we abort the mission and retreat right away. No heroics."
Svane agreed, slamming his sword back into its heavy scabbard.
"You have my word. Now, let us move. We need to set up the array before this 'big dark monster' arrives."
Ray promised.
The trek up the rocky incline was swift and silent. Ray and Svane eventually arrived at a high, jagged ridge located quite a distance from the ruins. It was an optimal vantage point, offering a perfect, unobstructed view of the Ruinstone mining site below while keeping them safely removed from the immediate danger zone.
Ray swept his gaze across the valley, nodding in quiet satisfaction.
"This location will do perfectly, keep watch on the perimeter, Svane. I need a moment to sit down and design the concealment array."
Ray said, turning to his vanguard.
Svane froze.
"Design it, my Lord?"
Svane echoed, his voice laced with heavy disbelief.
He had assumed Ray already possessed or knew an array ready for immediate deployment. The sudden realization that his Lord intended to invent a stealth ward completely from scratch, while sitting in a highly active danger zone, left the veteran Aegis temporarily speechless. Svane opened his mouth to protest the sheer absurdity of the idea, but the words died in his throat. Ray had already sat down cross-legged on the rocky earth, his eyes closed in concentration.
Svane let out a long, slow breath. He simply shook his head, feeling utterly bamboozled by his Lord’s, and turned his back to stand guard.
Deep within the Ambient Presence of Ray’s mind, he stood at the center of the phantom chamber.
He called out the Eccentric Scholar and the Arcane Scribe.
The two archetypes came into the light from the shadows. Ray wasted no time, immediately laying out the parameters of their task.
"We need a localized ward, it must render anyone inside completely invisible to both non magical detection and magical detection. Most importantly, the array’s own arcane signature must be entirely suppressed. Whatever is hunting down in that valley cannot sense a single drop of our energy and the array."
Ray instructed.
The Eccentric Scholar adjusted his spectacles, instantly pulling up raw, theoretical data from his vast catalog that he was able to gather from Solhaven Academy Library.
Scholar: "A total null-zone? That is incredibly tricky. The ambient aether in the Whispering Hills is so thick that a standard concealment barrier will be crushed like an eggshell. We need something that masks rather than resists. I suggest we adapt the Facade Protocol Array, the one we used to fool Archmage Landa in the Genesis Chamber."
The Arcane Scribe, quiet and methodical, laid out a phantom parchment to begin mapping the geometry, but immediately shook his head.
Scribe: "Insufficient. The Facade Array Protocol is brilliant for masking signatures, but it requires a massive, pre-existing anchor like the Sunstone Heart to stabilize it. We are building this in the dirt. Without an anchor, the runic borders will bleed energy."
Ray leaned over the phantom parchment, his mind racing as he analyzed the Scribe's geometric outlines.
"What if we don't build it directly on the dirt? What if we lay down a localized foundation first? We integrate the structural suppression of the Silent Ward Array we utilized in my study at the Spire of Sages, the one that successfully escaped detection from Headmaster Andrade."
Ray proposed, tapping the center of the parchment.
The Arcane Scribe paused, his phantom quill hovering over the paper.
Scribe: "Nesting the Facade Protocol inside the Silent Ward... It creates a closed-loop environment. The borders won't bleed."
Scholar: "But the runic friction! Fusing two Master-tier arrays of different elemental disciplines will cause massive arcane friction! The mana required to keep them stable will skyrocket. It will drain your core in minutes!"
The Eccentric Scholar interrupted, waving his hands frantically.
"It would... if we used standard mana to bind them."
Ray as he smiled faintly.
The Eccentric Scholar froze, his eyes going wide behind his spectacles as he realized what Ray was suggesting.
Scholar: "By the Gods... you use your primordial Aether as the conductive bridge. It completely bypasses standard runic friction!"
The Arcane Scribe didn't say another word. His hands suddenly moved in an absolute blur. He eagerly fused the concepts of the two legendary wards, using Ray's Aetheric theory to solve the friction problem, drafting a brand-new, terrifyingly complex geometric blueprint. The intersecting lines and runic nodes hummed with theoretical perfection.
Scholar: "Brilliant! An absolute masterpiece of arcane array architecture! Let us call it... ‘The Aetheric Null-Veil.’"
The Eccentric Scholar said in awe, looking at the finished blueprint.
Ray nodded, finalizing the blueprint in his mind.
System. Run structural analysis on The Aetheric Null-Veil.
Translucent blue text immediately flooded Ray's vision, the system's analytical engine crunching the magical geometry at a speed no human mind could match:
[INITIATING RUNIC MATRIX SIMULATION...]
[CALCULATING AMBIENT MANA INTEGRATION...]
[SIMULATION COMPLETE: STRUCTURAL VIABILITY 91%.]
[SYSTEM SUGGESTION: AMBIENT MANA DENSITY IN CURRENT ENVIRONMENT EXCEEDS STANDARD CALIBRATION. SUBSTITUTE STANDARD MANA INFUSION WITH HOST PRIMORDIAL AETHER TO ACHIEVE 100% SIGNATURE MASKING AND ESTABLISH PASSIVE SUSTAINMENT LOOP.]
Ray read the notification and understood the System's logic flawlessly. The Whispering Hills were saturated with the heavy ambient mana. If he used standard mana to power the ward, it would clash with the environment. But by using his primordial Aether as the foundational ink, the array would naturally absorb the surrounding mana to power itself, radiating absolutely zero foreign signature.
Ray opened his eyes in the physical world.
Svane blinked, visibly startled. By the Gold Aegis's internal clock, a mere five minutes had passed since Ray sat down.
He couldn't possibly be finished designing the runic array right?
Svane thought as he opened his mouth again about to ask his Lord, but Ray was already moving with deliberate, unstoppable purpose.
