The Lucky Farmgirl
Chapter 2627 - 2560: Mediation
Lord Tang nodded slightly, looking at Lady Mei, "So, does Lady Mei wish for a divorce?"
Lady Mei lowered her head, clutching her handkerchief, "I will listen to my father."
This statement was quite clever. Lord Tang smiled faintly and looked at the young man, "Fang Sanlang, you heard what Lady Mei said, the divorce agreement was something both of you agreed to. Since you are already divorced, you have no relations with her. If you continue to pester the Mei family, the bailiffs can arrest you for harassment."
"I see that Young Master Fang is also a scholar and should understand the importance of propriety and integrity," he said. "Since you are already divorced, it’s better to part ways and wish each other well."
Fang Sanlang’s face was unsightly, and he remained silent.
But Lady Mei raised her head and glanced at him, then gently stepped forward, knelt, and said, "Young Master Fang, we have fate but not destiny. I only hope that everything goes smoothly for you in the future, and you marry a lovely wife and have two of your own children."
Mr. Mei’s expression improved considerably. He pulled his daughter behind him again and said to Fang Sanlang, "Fang Sanlang, I am placing my words here today: If you are willing for things to end well for both parties, that would be good. Otherwise, if you continue to bother us, I have ways to deal with you. Not to mention, after the divorce, shouldn’t your family repay the debt owed to my Mei family?"
Fang Sanlang shivered, his complexion drastically changing.
Mr. Mei stopped at that, bowed to Lord Tang, and said, "Thank you, my lord, for witnessing this today."
Lord Tang stood and returned the courtesy with a smile, "Mr. Mei is too polite. After all, as an official of the capital prefecture, it’s my duty to manage disputes in the capital."
Fang Sanlang left in a daze.
Mr. Mei was in no hurry to leave, knowing that there must still be many guests wanting to see them laughed at underneath.
Fortunately, this was the capital, and not many people knew him here. If this were back home...
Mr. Mei’s expression became increasingly cold, and his dislike for Fang Sanlang grew.
Lady Mei was also in a daze. Though she was weak and somewhat inept, she wasn’t entirely foolish.
Fang Sanlang’s willingness to sign the divorce agreement had hurt her once, and the pain was greater now, so she remained silent and dazed.
Bai Shan and Lord Tang knew the father and daughter needed time to calm down, so they took their leave.
Upon returning next door, everyone turned their heads and looked over eagerly. Lord Tang waved his hand reservedly and said, "I’ve sent him away."
Madam Tang then asked, "How did you send him off?"
Lord Tang smiled and said, "I only explained the Jin Law to him, persuaded him emotionally, and reasoned with him. How else could I have sent him off?"
These words were not the least bit sincere, causing Madam Tang to look at Bai Shan.
Bai Shan then said to Manbao, "I think Young Master Fang won’t have a good time in the future."
Bai Erlang: "Will Mr. Mei take revenge on him?"
Bai Shan smiled and said, "Even if Mr. Mei doesn’t, he won’t have an easy time."
He said, "From what Mr. Mei implied, the marriage between the Mei and Fang families cost the Mei family a lot, and the Fang family is in debt to them. Despite this, Fang Sanlang thought of taking a concubine and having a son with her to inherit the Mei family’s fortune..."
Bai Shan shook his head with a complicated expression, "Moreover, when they divorced, Mr. Mei gave him a sum of money, but it seems he’s nearly spent it all before coming to the capital seeking reconciliation. So incompetent – even if Mr. Mei doesn’t intervene, he won’t live well."
Lord Tang nodded in agreement and said to them, "Life is something you must build for yourself. I’ve judged many cases, and I’ve seen many people like Fang Sanlang."
He snapped open his folding fan, fanned himself, and smiled, "In this world, everything can fade away – wealth, power, even the love between husband and wife, or father and son. Only one thing keeps accumulating and never fades."
Everyone looked at him curiously, "What is it?"
Lord Tang tilted his chin slightly and said, "Skill!"
Manbao and Bai Shan were thoughtful, then nodded repeatedly.
Madam Tang also nodded but only halfway. Then she looked at Lord Tang, half-smiling, and asked, "What did you say would fade besides wealth and power?"
Lord Tang’s body froze, and he skirted away from the issue, "By the way, should we order some tea and snacks? We’ve been busy all this time and are a bit hungry."
Bai Shan smiled and was about to call a waiter to order food when there was a knock on the door.
The maid, who was standing by the door, opened it, and a waiter brought in fruits, snacks, and tea, smiling, "Ladies and gentlemen, these are treats ordered for you by the distinguished guests from the room next door."
Bai Shan was stunned for a moment before asking, "Did the guests next door leave?"
"They just did."
Bai Shan nodded and looked at Manbao.
Manbao peered out the window, paid special attention to Lady Mei’s expression, and seeing that although she looked worried, it wasn’t too bad, she nodded and smiled, "Lady Mei surprised me."
Madam Tang was peeling a lotus seed, said indifferently, "Since it wasn’t a marriage of mutual love, even though they were married for a few years and had no children, can their bond surpass that of father and daughter?"
Mr. Mei was also somewhat concerned for his daughter. So when they returned home, he held her hand and asked, "Do you blame your father?"
Lady Mei shook her head, "I know father is thinking of my best interest, but..."
She bit her lip and whispered, "But what about the child?"
Mr. Mei was inwardly resigned and told her, "We’ll find someone to marry into our family again in the future. Besides, regarding children, for now, I am not too concerned, as long as you lead a safe and smooth life in the future."
He reached out and patted her on the head, sighing, "You are your father’s child. Raising a child is no easy task. Between you and an unseen grandson or granddaughter, naturally, you are more important. If you truly want to raise a child, you can adopt one from the clan in the future."
Yet, Mr. Mei didn’t really want to use that method. His daughter was too gentle in temperament. If he were gone, if she adopted a child, not only could the child’s biological parents oppress her, but if the heir wasn’t competent, they might oppress her as well.
It might be better not to have children at all.
Mr. Mei grew worried and decided that when Zhou Man came to see them tomorrow, he would ask about when Lady Mei’s condition might improve.
A biological child and a non-biological child indeed have a significant difference.
As long as one was born, whether a boy or a girl, and he raised them well for a decade or so, Lady Mei would have a secure future.
Once Manbao confirmed that her acupuncture techniques and medications were effective for Lady Mei, she didn’t have Keke scan anymore, after all, points were needed, right?
During this period of consultation, she’d been relying on her reading of the pulse to make judgments.
Therefore, when she heard Mr. Mei’s question, Manbao listened carefully to the pulse again, checked Lady Mei again, pondered for a while, and then said to Keke, "I think it’s clear, just there’s still some cold in the womb. Otherwise, can you scan and take a look?"
Keke: "Points."
Manbao generously said, "Deduct them."
So Keke deducted the points, pulled up the scan results, and showed them to Zhou Man.
