The academy returned to life with the same bells that had always governed it.

Arthur woke before sunrise, the same way he had every day during the cancelled week. The difference was the noise. From the hallway outside his dorm room came the familiar rush of students moving to early classes, the clatter of boots on stone, the low chatter of people who were trying to pretend the Equinox attack had been only a temporary disruption.

Repairs were still visible if one looked closely — fresh patches of stone on the sky bridges, newly carved runes replacing ones that had been shattered — but the routine itself had snapped back into place.

He washed, dressed in the standard House Dawn uniform, and checked the Eros Codex before leaving. Frost Sovereign sat at forty percent mastery on the first page. Heavenfall Cyclone still occupied the second slot, its remaining duration steadily shrinking. The third page remained blank. For now.

Mimi appeared as he fastened his coat, floating upside down near the ceiling with her petal skirt hanging toward the floor.

"Classes again," she said. "Boring lectures, boring practicals, and a bunch of students who still think you’re interesting because you didn’t die. Try not to look too disappointed, Master."

Arthur ignored her and left the room.

The morning lecture was Core Mana Mechanics with Professor Selene Frost. The classroom filled faster than usual. Students who had spent the previous week either injured, terrified, or training in secret now sat with a sharper kind of attention.

Selene entered exactly on the chime, silver-white hair tied back, instructor coat immaculate. Her ice-blue eyes swept the room once. When they passed over Arthur they lingered for half a second longer than necessary before moving on.

She taught with the same precision as before the attack. Compression ratios. Density thresholds. The difference between forcing mana and guiding it.

Arthur already knew most of the material, but he still took notes. Every so often Selene would ask a question and her gaze would find him, as if checking whether the dual cultivation sessions had improved more than just his frost affinity. He answered when called upon.

His voice remained steady. The faint pink that touched Selene’s ears when he gave a particularly clean explanation was visible only to someone sitting as close as he was.

After class Milo caught up with him in the corridor.

"Feels strange, doesn’t it?" Milo said. "Like the academy is trying to force everything back to normal even though half the bridges still have scorch marks."

"It has to," Arthur replied. "If they let the fear sit too long, it becomes permanent."

Milo accepted that with a shrug. They walked together toward the next lecture. Along the way they passed groups of students openly discussing the Equinox attack, the missing key, and the man who had supposedly been erased by the headmistress only to survive. Theories ranged from the reasonable to the absurd. Arthur listened without joining.

The second class was Sensory Synesthesia. Professor Tom’s replacement — a stern woman from the evaluation department — made no mention of the previous instructor’s betrayal. She simply taught the material and ignored every attempt to bring up recent events. The atmosphere in the room remained slightly brittle.

By lunch the novelty of restarted classes had already begun to fade. Students packed the cafeteria with the same noise as before.

Arthur and Milo took their usual table. Julian sat with the other House Dawn first-years at a different table, occasionally glancing in Arthur’s direction with the same competitive evaluation he always carried.

Iris Blackthorn ate with a small group of Nova students, posture perfect, expression unreadable. She looked more tired than she had the previous week. Dark smudges sat faintly under her violet eyes, carefully concealed but still present if one knew to look.

Mimi, invisible to everyone else, sat cross-legged on the edge of Arthur’s tray and stole a piece of fruit.

"She’s been sleeping more," the book spirit observed. "Or trying to. Her Grimoire feels heavier than it did last week. Like she’s been stuffing too many things inside it."

Arthur filed the information away.

Afternoon practicals returned them to the outdoor platforms. Talia Vane ran a combat drills session focused on maintaining Mana Skin under continuous pressure. Her fighting silks were as minimal as ever.

The gold runes along her dark skin flared each time she demonstrated a technique. When she paired students for controlled spars she placed Arthur against a second-year who had been talking loudly about first-years overestimating themselves.

The spar lasted less than a minute. Arthur ended it with a frost-coated strike that stopped just short of the older student’s throat. Talia’s only comment was a short nod and a note to the rest of the class about efficiency.

After practicals the informal training group gathered almost automatically on the Dawn grounds. The numbers had grown. Students from other houses now appeared regularly. Arthur ran them through the same individualized drills as before, correcting, adjusting, and occasionally demonstrating. Iris arrived halfway through and took a place at the edge, working on precise dream applications that made her opponents hesitate at critical moments. She still looked tired. When Arthur asked if she was sleeping properly she only answered, "Enough."

Evening came with the usual orange light across the floating spires.

Most students returned to their dorms. Arthur remained on the platform after the others left, practicing the finer control of Frost Sovereign until the temperature around him dropped enough to form a thin mist. Footsteps approached from behind. He did not need to turn to know who it was.

Selene stopped a few paces away.

"You’re still pushing the frost," she said. "Your pathways can handle more than they could two weeks ago, but not infinitely."

"I know."

She studied him for a moment. The wind moved her silver-white hair across one shoulder. Without the formal classroom setting the quiet between them felt different — less like teacher and student, more like two people who had already seen each other without defenses.

"Come to the private chamber after dinner," she said eventually. "There are applications of Frost Sovereign you haven’t touched yet. And..." She paused, a faint color touching her cheeks. "The residual traces are still there. We should continue."

Arthur met her eyes and nodded once.

Selene turned and left with the same controlled grace she always carried. Arthur watched her go, then finally dismissed the cold around him and started walking toward the cafeteria. Above the academy the sky bridges glowed with evening light. Somewhere in the administrative spires, decisions about the next major academy event were already being finalized.

The routine had returned.

It would not last much longer.

Mimi floated up beside his shoulder, wings beating slowly.

"She’s still careful with you in public," the book spirit said. "But she’s not hiding the fact that she wants you anymore. Progress."

Arthur did not answer. He simply kept walking, the black book warm against his side, the weight of three empty slots and one ticking temporary ability pressing quietly against his thoughts. Tomorrow the lectures would continue. The day after that, or the day after that, the academy would announce the next trial.

Until then, there was training, dual cultivation, and the slow, steady work of becoming strong enough that no one could ever again decide his worth for him.

The academy had restarted.

Arthur intended to be ready when it tried to test him again.
