Chapter 1089: 1089. The Matriarch’s Market Value: Trading Dignity for Dinner and a Legacy

A cold dread began to coil in Morwenna’s stomach. "Then what do you want?"

Rex’s smile was slow, cruel, and utterly devoid of warmth. "I want what is owed to me for the chaos I’ve unleashed."

"I want total dominion... Not over your ledgers, but over your bloodline."

"Over the very essence of what makes a Nightwing."

Morwenna’s breath hitched. "I told you, I’ll do anything—"

"I know you will." Rex interrupted, his gaze raking over her with a clinical, possessive hunger that made her skin crawl. "But ’anything’ is a dangerous promise to make to a man like me."

"Because I don’t want your authority, Morwenna."

"I want your submission... I want the old Nightwing matriarch to serve as the foundation upon which I build my new order."

"I want your body as collateral for the stability you so desperately crave."

The color drained from Morwenna’s face. She recoiled as if he had struck her, her hands flying to her throat.

"You... you’re insane... That’s... that’s sacrilege!"

"That’s—"

"That is the price," Rex snapped, his voice cutting through her protest like a guillotine. "The price for the salvation you asked for."

"I won’t do it," she gasped, her voice shaking with fury and terror. "I will call the Council!"

"I will call Valentina! She will strip you of everything—"

Rex let out a short, humorless bark of laughter. "Valentina? You think she can stop me?"

"Valentina is a guardian of the old world, Morwenna."

"She clings to honor and duty while the world burns... I am the fire. By the time she realizes what I’ve done, I will already own the ashes."

He leaned forward again, his shadow stretching across her desk like a shroud. "Besides, we’ve already begun this process, haven’t we?"

Morwenna’s heart hammered against her ribs. "What are you talking about?"

Rex’s eyes glinted with something wickedly triumphant. "Let’s talk about Aurelia."

"Your precious granddaughter... The one who carries my seed."

The words hit Morwenna like a physical blow. She felt the world tilt on its axis. "No... no, that’s impossible."

"She would never—"

"She did exactly what I wanted her to do," Rex said, his voice dripping with satisfaction. "She was the perfect instrument to plant my stake in the heart of this family."

"And now, with her pregnant, the Nightwing bloodline is already irrevocably entwined with mine."

"The infection has already spread."

Morwenna shook her head frantically, tears finally breaking free and spilling down her cheeks. "You monster... you’ve destroyed us."

"You’ve destroyed everything we stand for!!!"

"No," Rex whispered, rising from his chair and walking around the desk until he stood directly behind her.

He leaned down, his breath hot against her ear, sending shivers of pure terror down her spine. "I’ve saved you."

"I’ve given you a purpose."

"Now, stop crying like a child and start acting like the asset you’ve promised to be."

He placed a hand on her shoulder, his grip firm and unyielding. "You wanted to preserve your family’s name, Morwenna."

"Now, you’re going to earn it... Starting tonight."

Rex didn’t pull away. Instead, he slid his hand from her shoulder down to her wrist, his fingers wrapping around her pulse point.

He could feel the rapid, rabbit-like flutter of her heartbeat beneath her skin. It was the rhythm of prey.

Leaning closer, he let his lips brush against the shell of her ear. The cold, calculating predator had shifted seamlessly into something else: a silver-tongued devil, a predator who knew exactly how to weaponize desire.

His voice dropped into a husky, intimate purr, the kind of tone that had dismantled countless defenses before this one.

"Don’t look at me with such hatred, Morwenna..."

"It’s exhausting," he whispered, his breath hot and deliberate against her skin. "Let’s look at this realistically."

"You’ve spent your whole life fighting for control, for dignity, for legacy... But control is an illusion... All that matters now is survival."

His thumb began to stroke the delicate skin of her inner wrist in slow, maddening circles. "I’ll use your body to satisfy my urges."

"I’ll take what I want from you when the hunger takes me, and in return? In return, I will be the shield that keeps your house from crumbling."

"I will be the monster that keeps all other monsters at bay."

"You give me your flesh, and I give you your future."

He pulled back just enough to meet her watering eyes, flashing a smile that was pure, unadulterated arrogance—the smile of a man who knew he had already won. "Think about it."

"It’s a perfect arrangement... a win-win."

"Your family survives, your granddaughter’s child has a protector, and I get exactly what I crave..."

"Everyone’s happy, don’t you think?"

Morwenna tried to wrench her hand away, but his grip was like iron wrapped in velvet.

"You’re... you’re talking about desecration," she choked out, though her voice lacked its earlier conviction. "You’re talking about transactional debasement."

"I’m talking about honesty," Rex countered, his gaze darkening with a sudden, genuine intensity. "Because truth be told, Morwenna..."

"I’ve thought you were absolutely wonderful from the moment I first laid eyes on you."

"That fire in your eyes, that unbreakable composure... it’s more intoxicating than any wine in Aethelgard."

Morwenna froze. The compliment felt like a violation, a twisted attempt to seduce her into her own ruin.

Frustration, hot and bitter, boiled up in her throat. She bit her lower lip so hard she tasted copper, her teeth sinking into the flesh to stifle a cry of rage.

"I’m... I’m more than a decade older than you, you know?" she snapped finally, the words tumbling out in a desperate attempt to reassert some semblance of reality. "I am a matriarch."

"I am a woman of standing. I am not some... some plaything for a man who hasn’t even seen his prime."

Rex let out a rich, throaty laugh that vibrated through her own body. He didn’t flinch at her accusation; he embraced it.

He moved closer, pressing his chest against her back, forcing her to feel the heat of him through her formal robes.

"Isn’t that exactly what makes this so exquisite?" he murmured, his lips grazing the nape of her neck. "You think age is a barrier?"

"To me, it’s an invitation."

"You have something those vapid girls my age could never comprehend... You have experience."

"You have authority. You have a mature sex appeal and a deep, simmering sensuality that only comes from decades of controlled power."

His hand slid from her wrist up her arm, his palm warm and possessive. "Those girls are empty vessels. But you?"

"You’re a storm. And I want to be the one who drowns in you."

Morwenna’s breath hitched audibly, a sharp, involuntary gasp that betrayed her body’s treasonous reaction to his proximity.

"Stop... please..." she whispered, but the plea was weak, undermined by the way her back arched instinctively toward his touch.

"Make me stop, then," Rex challenged, his voice dropping to a growl. "Fight me like you fight your enemies."

"But we both know how this ends, Morwenna. The arithmetic has already been done."

He turned her chair abruptly, forcing her to face him. Before she could protest, his hand moved to her chin, tilting her face up. The tension in the room was no longer just political or familial; it had curdled into something raw, carnal, and terrifyingly charged.

The air seemed to hum with the promise of the breaking point that was fast approaching.

Rex didn’t give her space to recover. He leaned in closer, his free hand sliding down from her chin to trace the line of her throat, his thumb brushing against her pulse point again.

The predator was fully unleashed now, his words dripping with a crude, unfiltered appreciation that made Morwenna feel both violated and inexplicably seen.

"Look at you," he whispered, his voice thick with genuine hunger. "You pretend to be this untouchable monument of Nightwing dignity, but your body betrays every lie you tell yourself."

"Those plump, succulent lips of yours... they look so fucking inviting."

"I can almost taste the defiance on them."

Morwenna gasped, a broken sound that caught in her throat as his hand wandered lower, tracing the swell of her breasts beneath the fine fabric of her gown. "Rex, stop this—"

"Stop what? Appreciating what’s right in front of me?" he interrupted, his breath hot against her cheek. "Those fucking tits of yours... they look bigger, softer, more perfect than anything I’ve ever seen."

"And these hips... these thick, curvaceous hips."

"You’re built for something far more primal than council meetings and political maneuvering."

He let out a low, dark chuckle that sent a fresh wave of heat through her. "Honestly, Morwenna?"

"After seeing the bloodline you’ve produced... I’d much rather have sex with you than with Elaris."

"And Aurelia? Please... She’s a child playing at being a woman."

"But you? You’re the real thing... You’re the prize."

Morwenna felt a shudder wrack her entire frame. The insult to her daughter and granddaughter stung, but the raw honesty of his desire was more terrifying.

She felt trapped between two deaths: the death of her family’s legacy or the death of her own dignity. Her mind raced, searching for an exit that didn’t exist.

The power dynamic had shifted so violently that she was no longer a matriarch; she was a bargaining chip.
