Chapter 1288: 1288. I Want You to Have the Illusion of Agency Before I Erase It
His boots sank half an inch into the cracked stone as the weight drove him down. His veins bulged along his neck like coiled serpents, his jaw clenched so tightly that his molars produced a grinding sound that could be heard over the distant screams of the children.
He dropped to one knee, then onto one unsteady hand, his entire body straining against the invisible titan pressing him into the earth. He wasn’t injured; there were no bruises, no bleeding wounds, but he was utterly paralyzed by the sheer inevitability of the force.
His eyes burned with a hatred so pure it was almost reverent.
"You’ll have your turn, Leonidas," Rex said.
His tone was casual, almost conversational, like a host promising a guest a seat at a dinner table. "But tonight... tonight does not belong to you."
Rex’s gaze shifted back to Helena, his eyes dark and hungry. "Now..."
"...where were we?"
Rex’s gaze shifted away from the broken warrior at his feet. His eyes, dark and unfathomable like the bottom of an abyss, swept across the assembled nightmare.
He looked at Cassandra’s crimson blade, at Gorvasha’s bared tusks, and at the twitching weapons of the Underlayer soldiers.
When he spoke again, his voice had dropped several octaves; it was no longer the hoarse rasp of a wounded man but something colder, something that resonated with the authority of a predator claiming its territory.
"Stand down."
The command wasn’t a request. It was a decree that seemed to physically push against the air in the room.
"All of you... No one interferes."
"This is mine."
For several heartbeats, the silence in the wrecked hall was more deafening than the explosions that had preceded it. The tension was so thick it felt like it could be cut with a knife.
Cassandra’s jaw worked visibly; her knuckles were white around the hilt of her sword. Her entire body language screamed defiance; she looked as though she would rather plunge her blade through Helena’s throat right then and there to end the insult to Rex than obey.
Her eyes flickered between Rex’s bloodied face and Helena’s defiant stance.
Then, with a sharp, controlled exhale through her nose, hiss she lowered her sword. It was a slow, grudging motion.
She made a flat, dismissive gesture with her free hand toward the sea of demons behind her.
"Stand down," she commanded, though her voice carried a venomous edge.
The effect was instantaneous. The spears of the Underlayer soldiers dropped with a collective metallic clatter, though they remained braced for violence.
Gorvasha let out a low, guttural growl that rumbled in her chest like an angry bear being denied a kill, but she obeyed. The massive orc planted the butt of her great axe against the marble with a heavy thud and folded her arms across her chest, though her eyes never left Helena’s throat.
Lilith, meanwhile, retreated slightly into the shadows, twisting the hem of her sleeve between blood-stained fingers, her eyes fixed on Rex with a terror she couldn’t suppress. She was watching a god bleeding, and she knew what happened when gods bled.
The entire underlayer force froze. The ring of steel and claw around the wrecked hall became a statue gallery of monsters, utterly motionless.
Helena stared at the scene, and for the first time since the fight began, her rage faltered. A cold finger of dread traced its way down her spine.
She looked at the creatures, the demons who had stalked her city’s streets for a week, the monsters her people whispered about in fear, and realized they weren’t just present.
They were waiting. They weren’t here to conquer; they were here to serve.
This man... this man she had just assaulted with lightning and earth, the man she believed was merely a gifted student who had stumbled into a tragedy, had just commanded an army of nightmares with a single breath.
The power dynamic of her entire world shifted beneath her feet in that moment. She couldn’t process the implications; her mind was too fractured, too consumed by the grief of her lost family.
Leonidas, still pinned to one knee by the invisible crushing weight of Rex’s gravity, finally managed to lift his head. His breathing was labored, each inhale sounding like sandpaper against stone.
Sweat mixed with blood trickled down his temple as he looked up at Helena with eyes that held a grim, terrible clarity.
"Helena..." he wheezed, his voice rough and strained from the pressure on his lungs. "Don’t you see?"
"They don’t fear him because of his magic alone...!"
"They obey him because he is the law!!!"
Helena heard the words, but they failed to register. Her mind was a storm of static and screaming grief; Leonidas’s warning couldn’t penetrate the fortress of her fury.
She was drowning in the need to destroy the thing that had broken her world.
"I’m holding them back," Rex said.
The words weren’t a plea. They were a statement of fact delivered with the casual indifference of a man discussing the weather.
Slowly, painfully, he began to rise from the rubble. His joints popped with audible cracks as his body forced itself upright, vertebrae grinding against one another.
Frost still clung to the jagged ice spear embedded in his thigh, the frozen flesh around the wound puckered and blue. With a guttural grunt, he reached down and gripped the crystal shaft.
SQUELCH.
He yanked it free. A spray of arterial blood painted the broken marble crimson as the ice tore through muscle and vein.
He didn’t flinch. He simply tossed the bloody shard aside; it clattered against the floor with a hollow tink and stood fully upright.
His shoulder wound gaped like a second mouth, blood streaming down his tan skin in hot, steady rivulets, while his shirt hung in charred, blackened strips that revealed the corded muscle beneath.
"I’m holding them back because I want you to do this properly," he continued, his voice gaining a razor-sharp edge that cut through Helena’s hysteria. "Because I want you to have the illusion of agency before I erase it."
He took a step forward, his boots squelching in the blood pooling around him. His eyes locked onto hers, not with anger, but with a cold, mocking contempt that was infinitely more devastating.
"This is your last chance, Helena."
"This is the last moment you get to scream at me like some hysterical child playing at being a mage."
"Say what you need to say..."
"Pour out your pathetic little grievances..."
"Let the tears fall and the pretty spells fly." His lips curled into a cruel, mocking smile. "Because once I’m done with you, there won’t be enough left of your ’righteous fury’ to fill a thimble!"
"I’m going to break you so completely that you’ll forget what it felt like to even have an opinion!"
He spread his arms wide in the center of the ruined hall, a grotesque parody of a welcoming host. The blood from his chin dripped onto his chest, mixing with the soot and ash.
"Go on then, little bird," he spat, his voice dripping with venomous condescension. "Give me all of it!"
"Scream until your lungs bleed!"
"Cast every pathetic spell your broken mind can conjure!"
"Nobody will stop you! The monsters, the soldiers, even your precious Leonidas—they will all stand aside and watch as you fail!"
"It’s your right! Make your final performance memorable before I put you down!"
The silence that followed was absolute. Rex stood there bloody, broken, and utterly terrifying waiting for her to either break or burn.
