Chapter 33: Chapter 33: The World Beyond

The moment the team stepped through the gate, the familiar pull of spatial distortion washed over them and vanished just as fast.

Felix opened his eyes to a vast forest, tall trees filtering sunlight into scattered beams, a perfectly still, crystal-clear lake stretching out directly ahead.

He looked around, yawned, and said, "Let’s sweep the area."

"Wait," Darius said immediately, eyes moving slowly across the treeline. "Something’s watching us."

The relaxed mood evaporated on the spot.

Kael’s hands ignited. Seraphina raised both hands, water compressing into spheres dense enough to look like miniature cannons.

Aria formed an ice spear. Felix stayed in the center of the formation with absolutely no intention of joining in, still recovering from the hangover.

"Don’t look at me," he muttered. "I’m healing today."

Darius ignored him. Aria turned to Mira. "Scout."

"Roger."

Space rippled where Mira had been standing, and she was gone, her space affinity let her cover short distances in rapid jumps, making her the fastest scout the team had.

Minutes passed with everyone frozen in position, Seraphina’s water cannons still trained on the forest.

"How long’s she going to take?" Felix yawned.

"She’s scouting an unknown world," Aria said.

"Right."

More minutes passed before the space beside them distorted again and Mira reappeared. "Report," Aria said.

"We’re surrounded." Everyone’s grip tightened.

"At least a hundred."

"Rank?" Darius asked.

"D-rank."

Kael’s flames eased back down. "What are they?"

Mira glanced toward the trees. "Forest elves."

The whole team went still. "Elves?" Lena repeated.

"They’ve got us surrounded from every side, hiding in the canopy."

Aria lowered her spear slightly. "So this world has intelligent inhabitants."

"Looks like it."

One by one, everyone dropped their stances. This wasn’t a hunting mission anymore, they’d walked straight into someone else’s territory.

---

Aria stepped forward, both hands raised to show she wasn’t carrying a weapon. "Can you understand me?"

Nothing.

"We’re not here to hurt you."

Still nothing. She moved a step closer to one of the trees, and five arrows shot out of the branches at once.

*Clang.*

The arrows hit her and bounced off harmlessly.

"We want to talk," she said, unbothered.

Another volley came in answer, and this time Felix moved, gone from where he stood, reappearing nearly fifty feet up, then dropping straight down like a missile. His fist hit the ground.

*BOOM.*

The impact shook the forest floor hard enough to rattle the canopy, leaves raining down, several figures tumbling out of the branches with cries of alarm.

Felix straightened, mana gathering dense around his fist again, and looked up into the trees.

"Come out. Now."

Silence, then movement, elves emerging one after another, bows still in hand but the hostility drained out of their faces, replaced by something closer to fear. Felix let the mana dissipate and yawned.

Mira stared at him. "Very good. We land on their territory, get surrounded by the locals, and your response is to threaten them."

"That isn’t exactly textbook first contact," she added, sighing.

Seraphina watched quietly, taking mental notes.

"He’s not feeling well today," Darius told the elves, as if that explained anything. "Normally he’d have handled this more diplomatically."

"That bastard would’ve reacted worse sober," Kael said.

Darius looked at Kael, then at Felix, then back at the elves, and sighed. "I give up." He’d apparently decided to just accept that he was surrounded by idiots.

Aria spent the next several minutes attempting actual communication before giving up and returning to the group. "It’s difficult. I can’t understand their language, but I’ve got a general sense of the direction they want us to go."

"Where?" Darius asked.

She pointed. "That way. Let’s move."

---

They traveled for hours through what felt like an endless stretch of forest, until nearly half a day in they came across something unexpected: a village, and humans moving between wooden buildings. The team slowed to a stop, and Aria approached carefully.

"Hello."

Nothing. She tried again. Still nothing: a different language, same problem, no way through. She stepped back. "We’ll need another direction."

With the sun already dropping, they set up camp near the village rather than push into unknown territory at night.

Felix barely made it into his tent before he was asleep, and Kael eyed the tent flap with something like admiration. "He’s really committed to this hangover."

Around the campfire, the rest of the team settled in, Seraphina among them, quiet, listening. Kael poked at the flames. "There’s got to be something causing all this."

"Something opened this gate," Lena agreed.

"We’ve been here almost a full day," Kael said. "Elves, humans, no monsters at all. That doesn’t add up."

"It really doesn’t," Darius said.

"Rifts don’t just open for no reason," Kael went on. "Something on this side is causing the conditions."

"And whatever’s causing it may eventually cross through the gate," Aria said, looking toward the treeline. "Ten days before it becomes the human world’s problem."

"So something has to give before then," Mira said.

"We’ll find it," Aria said, glancing around the fire. "We move early tomorrow."

Nobody argued. Seraphina stayed quiet, eyes drifting toward Felix’s tent and even in the middle of a conversation about an unknown threat on an alien world, some part of her was still wondering whether he was sleeping comfortably in there.

---

**The Following Morning**

Felix emerged from his tent looking like a completely different person: the exhaustion gone, the hangover vanished, eyes sharp, energy fully restored.

"You’re alive," Kael said.

"Never felt better."

"You looked half-dead yesterday."

"I made a mistake."

"At least you learned something."

"Absolutely," Felix said, grinning.

Aria called the group together. "Let’s move."

This time Felix actually helped: sweeping the area, checking mana fluctuations, tracks, scorch marks, disturbed vegetation, anything that looked out of place.

Hours in, a scream cut through the trees. Then another. Aria’s head snapped toward the sound.

"Village."

They moved fast, and from the ridge overlooking the settlement, everyone’s expression hardened at once.

Demons. Ten of them, tearing through the village: not mindless, either, coordinating deliberately, working elemental abilities in tandem. One threw fire while another struck from the opposite flank, a third raising a barrier to cover them both.

"Demons," Darius said, jaw tight.

"This just became critical," Aria said.

Felix cracked his knuckles.

"Controlled engagement."

He sighed. "Fine." The team moved in.

---

The fight didn’t last long. Nine demons went down; the tenth broke and ran. Seraphina raised her hand instantly, a water blade condensing and ready to fire and Felix grabbed her wrist before she could release it.

She froze. He shook his head. "Not yet."

She stared down at his hand wrapped around her wrist, and felt her face go warm. *He’s holding my hand.*

Her thoughts went strangely blank: she’d fought monsters, killed people, survived things most people never had to, and somehow this small, careless gesture did more to her than any of it.

He let go. "Let it run."

"Why?"

"We follow it," Aria said.

Seraphina looked at the fleeing demon, then back at Felix, and nodded. The team shifted into pursuit formation, trailing it from a distance: quiet, careful, deliberate.
