Chapter 37: Chapter 37: The Silver Needle Hunt

The Hero Association’s emergency meeting room had never been this crowded, five S-rank teams standing in formation, seventy-five heroes pulled straight off active assignments, senior officials clustered around a large holographic display at the front.

The image hanging above them showed a young woman with black hair and striking purple eyes.

**VESPER CRUZ.** Age 23. Rank A. Talent classification: Tier 1. Affinity: Metal. Proficiency: High II.

The room stayed dead quiet. This wasn’t a routine manhunt: a Tier 1 criminal had escaped Acheron Deep, and that fact alone had been enough to mobilize five full S-rank teams at once.

Aria stood at the front of her team, arms folded.

Felix stood beside her, looking up at the projection. He’d seen dangerous monsters. He’d fought S-rank bosses, nearly died to one alone.

This was different, they weren’t hunting a monster this time. They were hunting someone who understood exactly how heroes thought, who’d spent fourteen months studying one of the most secure facilities on the planet, and who’d walked out of it without leaving a single confirmed body behind.

That made her more dangerous, not less.

---

The door opened, and Gideon walked in, colder than usual, heading straight for the central display without acknowledging the room first.

"Before we start, understand one thing." His voice stayed level. "Vesper Cruz is not to be underestimated because she’s only A-rank."

The display shifted to a detailed record. "She carries Tier 1 talent and an extremely unusual Metal affinity, proficiency High II. She can manifest and manipulate metal with precision most of you have never seen, alter its composition, build extremely fine structures, control them remotely."

Another image followed: thin, hair-fine metallic wires. "Her preferred weapons are tiny constructs like these. Don’t assume armor or conventional defense means anything against her." He glanced across the room. "She specializes in infiltration and assassination. She studies a target before she moves on them. Patience is one of her sharpest weapons."

The display shifted again, a list of locations.

"These are the areas she’s most likely to try establishing herself in." Border cities. Underground markets. Former syndicate territory. Illegal sub-gate regions. "She had connections with several criminal organizations before her capture. We don’t know which of those contacts are still active."

Gideon looked out over the five teams. "Your objective is simple." Vesper’s image dropped away, replaced by two words.

**CAPTURE VESPER CRUZ.**

"Alive." A beat. "If that’s not possible, civilian safety and your team’s safety come first."

Nobody spoke.

"Do not pursue her alone. Do not underestimate her because she hasn’t reached S-rank, she killed a regional director and eleven guards before her original capture. Her escape from Acheron proves she’s spent fourteen months preparing for exactly this."

"Understood," Aria said.

"Your mission has no fixed timeline." The display split into five separate transport routes.

"Five groups, five regions, moving simultaneously. You all have a direct line to me, anything unusual, you contact me first." His expression hardened. "And if you find her, you do not let her disappear again."

**Felix**

The briefing broke up, and teams started prepping to move out. Felix fell into step beside Aria.

"There’s something else," she said.

"What?"

"Seraphina isn’t coming."

He stopped dead. "What?"

"She’s not ready for this kind of mission," Aria said, still walking.

"She’s fought a boss with us."

"This isn’t a gate." She glanced back at him.

"Vesper’s an intelligent assassin who spent fourteen months preparing an escape. She knows human tactics, security systems, Association procedure, criminal networks. Seraphina has almost none of that experience."

Felix didn’t argue the logic, he just didn’t like where it was going. "So what happens to her?"

"For the next few weeks, she’s assigned to an A-rank team."

His expression darkened instantly. "That’s a bad idea."

"Why?"

"She’s barely interacted with anyone besides us."

"Exactly why she needs to."

He frowned, and Aria kept going. "Our team’s already fifteen people, Felix. We can’t keep absorbing everyone who happens to get attached to us."

"She’s temporarily with us because of her attachment to me, and you’re just going to hand her off to strangers?"

"Eventually we have to. She needs to learn to function around other heroes, she can’t spend the rest of her life following you specifically around."

He sighed, because she wasn’t wrong, and knowing that didn’t make it sit any better. "She’s not going to like this."

"Probably not."

"She might refuse outright."

"Then we’ll deal with that when it happens."

He rubbed his forehead. "She’s going to blame me for this."

Aria gave him a faint, entirely too satisfied smile. "Good luck with that."

**Thursday Morning**

Liora sat on her bed, console in hand, eyes on the screen.

She glanced at the door. Nothing yet.

Her fingers kept moving on the controller until footsteps approached and a guard stopped outside. She looked up immediately.

"Your session’s cancelled today. Emergency situation." He kept going before she could ask anything. "You’ll be told when sessions resume."

He left. She stared at the closed door for a long moment before her eyes drifted back down to the console, fingers finding the controls again on autopilot. The game kept going. Her attention didn’t, not really.

A quiet ache for his presence crept in, frightening her more than she was willing to confess.

**Seraphina**

Seraphina sat in her cell with a book open in her lap, not really reading it, thinking about Monday instead. Another mission. Another day outside.

Another day beside Felix.

Those days had become the thing she looked forward to more than anything else in her week.

She turned a page, smiled faintly, hummed something under her breath.

She didn’t know her schedule had already changed. She didn’t know another team had already been assigned to her. She didn’t know Felix wouldn’t be standing next to her Monday morning at all, and she had no idea that the Association’s attempt to make her more independent had just taken away the one person she’d actually become dependent on.

They thought it was a sensible decision.

They had no idea what they’d just set in motion.

Seraphina turned another page, and smiled.

Monday couldn’t come fast enough.
