The Mafia Lord Forgotten Bride
Chapter 153: Brotherly Warning.
Amie watched Rauf leave the mansion. He hadn’t bothered taking the divorce papers with him.
She picked them up, squeezed them and threw them onto the floor.
But before leaving the living room, she picked them up again. She wouldn’t want any of the maids finding them and handing them over to Serena or Chris.
She returned to her room with a smirk on her face.
If this had happened before, she would have given in to Rauf. But not anymore.
She picked up her phone and dialled Dante’s number.
"Hello, darling," she purred into the phone the moment he picked up.
"Hello, beautiful. Anything up?" Dante’s voice filled her ears.
For some reason, it sent goosebumps through her body.
"I missed you, darling. Can I come over to your place?" she asked, twirling the hem of her shorts.
If she wanted to use Dante’s influence to deal with the divorce, she needed to get much closer to him than she was now.
She was still on the call when someone knocked on her door.
Because of the knock, she didn’t hear Dante’s response.
Angry, Amie sprang off the bed and headed for the door. She was ready to scream at whoever was standing outside.
But when she opened it, Chris was staring at her.
Amie blinked.
She couldn’t remember the last time Chris had come into her room. Ever since June came into his life, she had become someone Chris didn’t want to see.
"I’ll call you back, darling," she said into the phone before hanging up.
She didn’t invite Chris in immediately. Instead, she blinked at him.
"Hello, brother. What’s the news?"
Chris’s eyes moved over her body, just as Rauf’s had.
"Can you put on something decent? I want to have a talk with you."
Amie snickered. "This isn’t decent enough for you? I bet if June were wearing something like this around you, you wouldn’t be complaining. It’s a pity she dumped you to go after someone else’s husband."
Chris pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Can you stop talking about June? You know I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t something important."
Amie thought about it for a moment.
She had noticed that Chris had been avoiding her for a while. For him to have come looking for her now, it had to be something serious.
"Fine." She opened the door wider. "You can come in."
Chris looked at her again. "After you put on something decent."
Amie closed the door in his face. Within a few minutes, she had changed into an oversized T-shirt over her bra.
It still stopped above her knees, but it was more decent than what she had been wearing.
Chris followed her into the room.
The room smelled of perfume. The first things he noticed were the expensive bags and hair accessories sitting on her shelf.
He looked away from them.
Amie stood before him with her arms folded across her chest.
"What do you have to say, brother?" She dragged out the word brother to let him know she wasn’t pleased with him.
Chris sighed. "I wasn’t supposed to tell you this, but I feel like you deserve to know."
Amie gave him her undivided attention.
"What?" she asked. Her voice shook slightly, even though she tried to sound bold. "Is it about the inheritance?"
Chris shook his head. "No. This is more important than the inheritance."
Amie almost rolled her eyes.
What could possibly be more important than the inheritance?
But she didn’t interrupt him. She allowed him to continue.
"I don’t know if you’ve ever heard the name Monterrio."
Amie’s eyes widened.
What?
How did he know?
Had Chris put someone on her, or was he monitoring her calls?
Seeing her shocked expression, Chris asked, "Have you?"
Instantly, Amie shook her head. "No. Monterrio? Who are they?"
Dante was her secret.
She wasn’t ready to share him with anyone.
Even if she were going to share him with someone, it certainly wouldn’t be Chris.
Chris let out a sigh. "Good. I thought you might have come across one of them."
Of course, he was lying, but he couldn’t let Amie know that he already knew about Dante.
"I can’t go into the details of everything. But all I want you to know is that you need to stay far away from anyone named Monterrio."
Amie scoffed. "Is that the important thing? Now you want to start telling me who to associate with and who to avoid?"
"Listen, I know you don’t understand what I’m saying, but if it weren’t important, I wouldn’t be here. Any Monterrio is dangerous, and I wouldn’t want you to fall into their trap."
Even if you weren’t my sister, he added silently.
They might have gotten her involved, but he wouldn’t put her life in danger.
"How about you give me a better position at the company, and I’ll think about your offer?"
Chris stared at her.
His mother had warned him that what Amie didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her, but he had insisted on giving her a hint.
And what was she asking for in return?
Chris stood up. "This is entirely up to you, Amie. I only thought you deserved to know."
Amie nodded. "Of course, you care so much about me, but you won’t give me a higher position at the company. And you won’t even negotiate with Mother to give me a little of my inheritance."
She scoffed. "Such brotherly love."
Chris only stared at her.
"Fine. I’ve played my part as your brother."
Amie nodded and walked him to the door.
She opened it for him. "Thank you, brother. I’ll think about it."
Immediately, Chris left her room.
Amie controlled her breathing.
It wasn’t possible that he already knew about her relationship with Dante.
She had been very secretive about it.
She hadn’t even told her father or Gerald.
But to be on the safe side, she decided to call Dante back.
The phone rang three times before Dante’s voice filled her ears.
The first thing she asked was, "Darling, is there anything between you and my family?"
