The Martial Doctor
Chapter 556 - 460: Ximen Is Stuck
Pei Jian knew that the young man before him, not yet eighteen, would not be so easily fooled; the other was too clever.
He possessed political wisdom that was difficult for ordinary people to reach and was cautious and careful, not easily deceived.
He proposed this suggestion.
Besides being tied to interests, it was also a test, a test to see what the other truly wanted, as people ultimately could not escape the words "fame and fortune."
The young man had ideals and even more ambition. He made connections with the Su Family and was closely related to the Snow Mountain Sect; wasn’t this clear evidence?
Pei Jian lowered his head and picked up the spoon, sipping the hot drink slowly and gracefully as if the cup would never empty. This was truly the demeanor of a family scion. His time spent at the Xue Family Manor these past days had been truly exhausting both physically and mentally.
His body, pampered for so many years, was surprisingly not accustomed to this. After all, he was a practitioner of martial arts, and now he couldn’t endure even this slight hardship.
This old fox clearly wanted to pull him aboard; was it his own idea or the will of the person behind him?
Lin Miao couldn’t quite figure it out for the moment.
However, it wasn’t that he was afraid of boarding the ship; rather, he feared trouble because solving trouble required wasting time and energy.
With such time, couldn’t he study medicine, and with the extra time, discuss the origins of life in depth with Lianxin and the others?
This was what a cross-dimensional traveler should be doing.
Having traveled across dimensions, why struggle so hard? Life was already tough enough; couldn’t he live this life freely and without regret now that returning seemed impossible?
"Mr. Pei, I am not interested in political affairs. If it weren’t for the court insisting on giving me the deputy position at the Medical Bureau, I wouldn’t have taken it. You know I rarely go to the office. You suddenly entrusting me with such an important matter—I fear I won’t handle it well. It would be better to leave it to Mr. Wen to deal with." Lin Miao refused.
"Mr. Lin, are you really not taking this task?"
"I really don’t understand political affairs; please do not trouble me," Lin Miao clasped his hands together respectfully.
"Very well, since Mr. Lin is unwilling, I won’t force it. Then let Mr. Wen handle it." Pei Jian thought for a moment and nodded in agreement, knowing the relationship between Wen Ruyu and Xia Zhu, desiring to push Wen Ruyu to the forefront while hiding behind the scenes, fitting his "little fox" identity.
And even if he profited later, others could not directly attack him.
However, this little fox was very cautious and likely wouldn’t harm his own people, so even if profits were made, there’d be no evidence against him on the surface.
He had experienced Lin Miao’s flawless way of doing things firsthand.
Such a young age yet able to stay calm faced with such temptation; among his peers, Pei Jian had not seen one who reached such heights.
If he had a daughter, he might not resist bringing him home as a son-in-law.
Unfortunately, this lad was a romantic type, surrounded by beauties despite not being married. Who knew how he managed that?
In this regard, Pei Jian admitted he wasn’t as good.
"Thank you, Mr. Pei, for your understanding. If there’s nothing else, I’ll take my leave." Lin Miao rose and clasped his hands together.
"Mr. Lin, wait a moment, there is still a matter to discuss," Pei Jian raised his hand to call Lin Miao back, "Regarding the position of President of the Physician Association, I would like to hear your opinion."
"Isn’t the president nominated by the Association? I’m merely a deputy at the Medical Bureau, without nomination or decision power. Mr. Pei, are you not asking the wrong person?" Lin Miao chuckled softly.
"The Association nominates, but I have recommendation rights, and this presidency also requires the government’s appointment. If the nominee cannot win the trust of everyone, I have the right to refuse recognition."
"You should communicate with Mr. Wen. As long as you both agree on the nominee, there shouldn’t be any issues below."
"Mr. Wen hasn’t been in the post long and hasn’t fully understood the situation yet. Therefore, I want to ask for a recommendation from Mr. Lin," Pei Jian chuckled, explaining.
"If I were to recommend someone, should I inform Mr. Wen first?"
Although he didn’t want to get mixed up in the officialdom, Lin Miao knew to follow protocol, avoiding report or recommendation across levels was taboo.
If such a move became known, everyone would be wary of him, even though Lin Miao wasn’t afraid. Wen Ruyu, even if he found out, wouldn’t blame or be angry with him.
But why should he do it?
Who the president of the Physician Association was didn’t matter to him; it couldn’t be worse than Ye Shengyuan.
Ye Shengyuan had the backing of Marquis Lingyang’s Mansion, yet he wasn’t afraid, so why fear anyone else?
Pei Jian sighed internally; the little fox truly was slick, never getting involved, yet took no fewer benefits.
Such a person, fortunately, wasn’t interested in the bureaucratic path. Otherwise, he would excel even more here.
"I have an afternoon clinic, so I won’t disturb you further, Lord Governor. Farewell!" Lin Miao once again rose to take his leave.
"Then I won’t see you off!"
...
Once returning from the government office, Lin Miao began his afternoon consultations.
He planned to adjust the consultation hours.
But it required a transitional period, notifying in advance to prevent original patients from arriving in vain due to unawareness.
Afternoon patients had common illnesses, which could be diagnosed by listening to their descriptions and checking the pulse.
