The Max Level Hero Has Returned!
Chapter 1484.1
It was traditional knowledge that siblings were destined not to get along. As the adage went, brothers and sisters were born from the same mother just so they could fight.
Thwack!!!
“Hey. Get your foot off of me!”
“What are you even talking about? This is my spot, get lost.”
“Your feet smell so bad. Move them.” Despite Davey’s complaints, Hyun-Ah placed her foot against his cheek and shoved him away.
That was what happened when they both tried to hog the couch while watching a funny drama.
“Wait, that’s not what happened in the original! Does this even make sense? Should I just buy out this damn broadcasting station, seriously?”
Hyun-Ah was wearing just a pair of dolphin shorts and a tank top. “You crazy bastard...”
The world knew her as one of the young leaders of the Sacred Group, often mentioned as the next CEO, but they had no clue of how she truly was at home.
Davey shot a glare her way. “How do you not gain weight?”
She rarely used her yoga mat, not even her foam roller. Seeing her maintain such a perfect figure despite her laziness, Davey wondered whether she’d simply been blessed with good genes or had unknowingly become an Awakened.
“Ha! It’s natural. Something you wouldn’t know anything about,” she shot back.
“Aeria is fully natty, so I know plenty about it. You, though? Hmph. You better listen up, because this is coming from an actual doctor. You’re going to crash and burn one day. ”
“Yeah, nice try. You won’t get me with your lies.”
“You have no idea what you’re talking about, Davey insisted. “Right now, your organs are screaming for release. In a few years, your skin will be all dry and your body will be completely wrecked. I’m not even kidding. I’m fully qualified to say so! You know who I am, right?”
When Davey spoke so seriously, she flinched. Since he was a divine doctor who could even bring the dead back to life, it looked like his serious warning had scared her. She stammered, “R-really?”
He smirked. “You dumb dumb. You thought I was serious?”
“You little shit! Are you trying to give me a heart attack?!” She viciously kicked him, letting out an ear-splitting yell like in a martial arts movie.
Thwack thwack!!
“Ugh. What does Chris Marten even see in this little menace?”
‘He must be completely blinded by love...’
He was handsome, always left a great impression on people, and was genuinely pleasant and cheerful. He was also tall and in good shape.
Sure, there were a few rumors going around regarding his conduct with women, but, from what Davey had seen firsthand, the affection he had for Hyun-Ah was particularly sincere.
‘Then how in the world did he fall for that octopus...?’
Davey decided to do a deep analysis.
‘Let me consider this seriously and objectively...’
First was his appearance. Chris Marten was definitely a handsome man. He had even received offers to become an actor.
On the other hand, that menace sister of his...
He mumbled to himself, “Hmm. The difference is pretty huge.”
‘Then could it be her personality?’
Hyun-Ah grew suspicious once he grew quiet. “What are you looking at?”
“Hmm. Definitely not.”
‘Then how about wealth?’
Instead of responding, he just kept mumbling to himself, “Ah. That is the one area where she is somewhat acceptable.”
Chris, as the best hero in America, earned a lot of money, sure. However, Hyun-Ah was, from the start, someone who was called the next CEO of the Sacred Group, a multinational corporation. Owing to that status and accomplishment of hers, she had a ton of money saved up.
Aside from those three things, Davey felt Chris was too good for Hyun-Ah in every conceivable way.
“You’re being too subjective,” Perserque chastised Davey, poking his cheek. “Hyun-Ah is very pretty, sports a great figure, and even has a kind personality.”
He shot her a skeptical look. “You call that kind and pretty?”
“Are you suggesting that I am lying right now?” She stared back at him.
He suddenly flinched at the fierce atmosphere. “No, ma’am.”
“From what I can tell, you don’t seem too happy about the thought of marrying off your little sister.”
“That’s ridiculous. I was more than willing to send Winley off when she married Yulis!”
“Ridiculous? You went to meet him, and Yulis came back all beaten to a pulp. Did you forget that?”
Davey calmly replied, “Hmmm, I don’t recall such a thing.”
Illyna and Perserque sighed.
“Fine, fine, we get it. People don’t fall in love based on looks alone. But if you try to force two people who aren’t compatible together, they’ll both suffer. Do you think international marriages are difficult for no reason?”
Although Hyun-Ah traveled all over the world, she was strictly Korean, and Chris was from the United States.
“The cultures they live in are completely different to begin with.”
“That Chris guy even learned Korean because of Hyun-Ah. I’ve even heard that he keeps coming here to get used to Korean culture.”
Davey was practically dumbfounded. “Is he out of his mind?”
‘What in the world is wrong with him?’
“Didn’t you become a Demon King just to marry me?” Perserque reminded him.
“Quiet.”
When Davey tried to snatch Perserque, she quickly dodged his hand and stuck out her tongue to blow a raspberry. “Pbbbt—!”
Illyna took the opportunity to add, “Either way, it’s their decision, not yours.”
Davey couldn’t say a word against that, as he knew she was right. Yet, he also knew the two were mistaken on something. He told them, “No, I actually want to help Chris.”
“Huh?”
“Eh?”
“Who else but a saint like him could put up with all her outrageous behavior and constant screaming?” If someone was willing to take her, he should welcome them with open arms. “The one I am worried about is Chris, not her.”
That was why he still felt conflicted about the whole thing.
“Hmm, but why does it seem like you’re so against it?”
“I’m conflicted on whether I should save Chris, who’s been bitten by that brutal sea creature who looks like she belongs at the bottom of the deep sea... or if I should even be...”
As he muttered, someone lightly patted his back and chided, “Hyun-Su, how can you say such harsh things about Hyun-Ah?”
“Ah, Yeon-Hee!”
“Even I’m worried too,” she admitted with a smile. “But I trust you to help him out, Hyun-Su.”
Davey closed his mouth at her smile. “Yes, Yeon-Hee.”
He simply couldn’t dare to challenge Yeon-Hee, who had practically given up her own life to support the family since childhood. They had only reached such a point through painstaking effort, even after meeting their uncle.
“Yeon-Hee, give me your hand.” He gathered a vast amount of vitality in his hand and pushed it into her. Since she usually tended to overexert herself, he didn’t feel at ease unless he recharged her vitality every once in a while.
“Oh, right. Hyun-Su.” She quietly handed him a book, seemingly having only just remembered it.
He didn’t know why she’d give him such a thing. “What is this?”
“It’s a modern romance novel that Hyun-Ah likes. I’ve overheard her saying a few times that she wishes someone would propose to her like they do in this book.”
Davey took the book without a word.
By the time he finished reading the whole book, a day had passed.
“It’s exciting for no reason at all. It’s driving me nuts.”
After reading it once, he found himself searching for similar books.
Davey wondered if he was going to turn into a complete homebody and read forever.
He couldn’t help but shudder at how scary novels could be.
* * *
Hyun-Ah was handling her usual paperwork when Yeon-Hee paid her a visit.
“Yeon-Hee? What’s going on?”
“Can you help me out with this?” What she handed her was none other than the inspection report for the Awakened equipment used in gates. “You know what this is, right? It’s for the inspection we’re doing this time.”
“Ah. Yeah.”
Although Hyun-Ah held a high position in the Sacred Group, she still needed to personally verify the new equipment being deployed for actual use. She complained, “Ugh. I really don’t like reporters...”
“It’s not an official event, so there won’t be many,” Yeon-Hee assured her. “Please, do this for me. I think I have an important appointment that day.”
“You think you have an appointment? What’s that supposed to mean? Aren’t they managing your schedule properly? Should I go shake things up for you?”
“Oh, stop it. They’re all good elites who work well.”
“Haah. Fine, I’ll do it.”
Even though Yeon-Hee looked somewhat delicate, her management skills were exceptional. She in fact completely shattered the idea that business skills came with age. Yeon-Hee had honed her skills entirely on her own to become the kind of person who could build a massive corporation from the ground up.
Her gaze somehow made Hyun-Ah uneasy, but she quietly nodded nonetheless.
The site where the gate was located meant she had to go to an industrial road a couple of miles away from the city center.
As soon as she stepped out of the car, the staff gathered around her immediately tensed up.
“Welcome!”
“Thank you for your hard work,” she replied with a wave of the hand. “So where’s the equipment?”
“Thank you. As for the equipment, it’s already being deployed over there. It detects and analyzes the monsters that emerge from a gate, then emits a special frequency based on their rank to interfere with their movements. Would you like to see the detailed documents about its operation?”
“Please.”
Even though it was a matter she could’ve easily skipped with the excuse that she found it annoying, she meticulously checked the fine details. Looking it over, she took a moment to ask, “How many Awakened individuals are on duty today?”
At that moment, Chris Marten appeared with a booming voice, announcing, “I’m here!”
She turned to him, surprised. “Chris? Why are you here?”
“Why? I came to work, as you can see.”
“Since when did you start working in this place? It’s absurd that you’re here when you should be in America.”
“I didn’t have much to do, you know. Plus, this is an A-rank gate. It’s best that people like me keep an eye on it.”
It was a considerably high-rank gate. Although Chris had grown stronger than before, Hyun-Ah wondered if he’d still be okay taking care of it alone.
Also, an S-rank Awakened from America would be held down by numerous restrictions operating in another country, but she didn’t mention it.
“Don’t worry, Princess. Even if it’s at rank A, I can handle any monsters that come out on my own. The gate has already weakened considerably, and I’ve also informed the higher-ups back home. Besides, this is a good opportunity for me to gain more field experience.”
