The NO.1 Food Stall in the Wasteland

Chapter 380: The House Was Robbed?

  • Next Chapter

Military armored vehicles are built differently from regular civilian cars, and they’re driven differently too. It was lucky that Wang Daguo managed to learn; he had a bit of a knack for it.

Wu Jun only knew how to drive idiot-proof civilian cars—the kind that required no special skill and even a child could operate.

"I know how," Fu Cheng said in a low voice. "Put me in the driver’s seat."

"Huh? But..." Shen Lu was dumbfounded. "Why don’t... you teach me, and I’ll drive?"

Fu Cheng was severely injured; asking him to operate a vehicle was simply too much to ask.

"If we delay any longer, are we giving up on saving Deng Ying?"

Shen Lu had no choice but to let Fu Cheng take the driver’s seat.

Fu Cheng expertly stepped on the clutch, shifted gears, and slammed his foot on the accelerator. The vehicle immediately shot forward.

It was a little too forceful; Shen Lu nearly slammed her head into the windshield.

Fu Cheng apologized, explaining it had been too long since he’d last driven and his foot was a bit heavy.

But it only took a moment for him to adjust.

When Shen Lu had distributed the Light Brains to her employees, she had linked them to a tracking system, which made finding people very convenient now.

The vehicle stopped in front of the Deng family’s home.

The Deng family lived on the first floor. The door and windows were tightly shut and the curtains were drawn, making it impossible to see what was happening inside.

The four of them turned off the engine and got out. Wu Jun went up to knock on the door.

Two minutes passed before someone responded.

"Who is it?"

"We’re looking for Deng Ying."

"She’s not here."

Shen Lu said in a low voice to Wu Jun and Huo Qian, "Enough talk. Just go in."

’Not here, my ass.’ The tracking system clearly showed that Deng Ying was right here in this house.

Wu Jun and Huo Qian exchanged a look. One broke down the door while the other smashed through a window. Following two loud crashes, Shen Lu could finally see the scene inside.

There were five or six people in the living room—men and women, young and old. The only one Shen Lu recognized was Deng Xuan.

The little girl hid behind a middle-aged woman with a terrified look on her face. ’This must be Deng Ying and Deng Xuan’s mother,’ Shen Lu guessed.

"You!" Father Deng grabbed the nearest object that could serve as a weapon. Forcing himself to sound calm, he demanded, "What are you doing? There are a lot of us here! If you... if you don’t leave now, we won’t hold back!"

Shen Lu ignored him and walked toward the red dot representing Deng Ying. Through the door, she could faintly hear crying and shouting from within.

"Open this door."

"No!" Mrs. Deng, mustering courage from who knows where, darted in front of the door. "You can’t go in!"

But Shen Lu’s words weren’t directed at Father or Mrs. Deng; they were for Huo Qian.

Huo Qian shoved Mrs. Deng aside. She kicked the door once, but it didn’t budge. She followed up with two more kicks, finally breaking it open.

The room wasn’t large. It contained a 1.5-meter-wide bed, two cabinets, and a vanity.

A man and a woman were on the bed. The man was young and unfamiliar. One of his hands was wrapped around Deng Ying’s neck, while the other was tearing at her clothes.

"Boss." Deng Ying’s voice was hoarse from crying. After calling out Shen Lu’s name, she could do nothing but weep.

"Who the hell are you?" the young man demanded angrily. Any man would be furious to have his door kicked down while he was in the middle of getting down to business.

At this, the people who had been standing dumbly in the living room finally reacted, rushing over in an attempt to stop Shen Lu.

Wu Jun used his superpower. A yellow barrier materialized out of thin air, blocking the people from the living room.

"It’s... it’s a Superpower User..."

Someone muttered the words, and the people, who had been furious just a moment ago, instantly fell silent.

Since Huo Qian and Wu Jun hadn’t used their superpowers when breaking the door and window, the family hadn’t considered that they might be Superpower Users. But now that a superpower was on display, they completely lost any will to resist.

An ordinary person stood no chance against a Superpower User; it was like an arm trying to wrestle a thigh.

Huo Qian grabbed the man pressing down on Deng Ying and violently yanked him off.

The man banged his knee and hissed in pain, but under the intimidating pressure of the Superpower Users, he didn’t dare cry out.

"Are... are you here to settle a score with Deng Ying?" Father Deng asked, his voice trembling.

Deng Xuan, terrified, peeked out from behind her mother and whispered, "They’re my sister’s boss and coworkers..."

’But they’ve become so scary. When I was living at the dorm, everyone at the shop was so friendly.’

’Especially Sister Qian; she would even give me candy sometimes.’

"Boss? Coworkers?"

Shen Lu grabbed a nearby piece of cloth, wrapped it around Deng Ying, whose clothes had been torn, and told Huo Qian to carry her out.

Father Deng and the others looked like they wanted to intervene, but one icy glare from Wu Jun was enough to make them freeze in place, watching helplessly as the group headed out.

Mustering some unknown courage, Deng Xuan trotted after them and yelled anxiously, "You can’t take my sister away!"

"If you take my sister, who will marry Brother Wei?"

"If Brother Wei doesn’t marry Sister, then Big Brother won’t have money for his own bride! Without a wife, how can he have children? Our family line will be cut off!"

The little girl’s high-pitched voice spouted such brutally practical words. Deng Ying’s body trembled. She bowed her head even lower as tears she thought had already run dry began to fall once more.

’This was the little sister she had doted on and cared for her entire life, and in return, she received not empathy, but a callous betrayal.’

This couldn’t be excused as a child simply not knowing any better.

If she were truly that ignorant, how could she have spoken with such clear, logical reasoning?

’I shouldn’t have been so soft-hearted. I never should have agreed to stay for dinner.’

Shen Lu didn’t break her stride. She got into the vehicle decisively and drove off, leaving them all behind.

"Mom! Mom!" Wei Yi suddenly yelled. "Take me to the hospital! My arm is broken!"

"My son!" Mrs. Wei wailed, suddenly snapping back to life as she rushed toward him.

Father Deng and Mrs. Deng tried to help, but Mrs. Wei violently flung their hands away.

"Get away from me! Look at this fine mess your family has caused!"

Father Deng looked awkward. "W-we can’t be blamed for this."

Mrs. Deng chimed in, "That’s right. We were acting in good faith. Why else would we have let your son be alone in a room with our Little Ying?"

"Enough nonsense. Pay up!" Mr. Wei demanded, holding out a hand. "My son’s arm was broken in your house. The hospital fees, the lost wages while he recovers, compensation for his nourishment... just give us 5,000 Star Coins for now."

"Five thousand Star Coins? Are you robbing us?" Mrs. Deng’s voice shot up several octaves.

"Hmph. If you don’t give us the money, your son can forget about ever getting married!"

Mr. Wei had hit Father and Mrs. Deng right where it hurt. Refuse to pay?

He’d just drag Deng Jianxin’s name through the mud and make sure he could never find a wife!

Mrs. Deng was furious. Seeing Deng Xuan sidle up to her, she shoved her younger daughter toward Mr. Wei.

"We don’t have any money! Just take this child as compensation!"

Deng Xuan was terrified and burst out wailing.

"Mom! Mom, I’ll be good! I’ll listen to you! Please don’t abandon me!"

The Deng and Wei families squabbled and snapped at each other for a while, but Wei Yi was in too much pain. In the end, Mr. and Mrs. Wei left with their son, cursing and muttering under their breath.

Father and Mrs. Deng had just breathed a sigh of relief when a cold gust of wind blew in, filling their mouths with dust.

"SPIT! SPIT! SPIT! The window and the door are both broken, and we can’t fix them tonight. Husband, what are we going to do?" Mrs. Deng wailed.

Extremely irritated, Father Deng told Mrs. Deng to shut up. He then scavenged around the house, managing to patch up the broken window and reinstall the busted door.

He had barely sat down to rest for a moment when Deng Jianxin came home.

Three days earlier, he had a huge fight with his family because they couldn’t afford his bride price. If the weather hadn’t taken a turn today, he wouldn’t have even bothered coming back.

The moment he saw the state of the room, his face paled. "What happened? Did we get robbed?!"
