The Omega Who Rose from the Ashes: The Alpha's Regret
Chapter 62: A Picture’s Worth
Alpha Peter
Alpha Peter Goon stood in his office, restless and dissatisfied. The territory lay quiet, the pack remained content, and months had passed without a decent skirmish or juicy scandal to enliven his days. He craved change, hungered for it. His fingers drummed against the polished oak desk, the rhythmic tap-tap-tap the only sound breaking the oppressive silence.
A sharp, precise knock interrupted his brooding. "Enter," he called without bothering to glance up.
One of his warriors appeared - Marcus, a man whose scarred left eyebrow gave him a perpetually dangerous look. He held a thick, cream-colored envelope.
"Did you get them?" Peter’s voice remained low, casual, though anticipation thrummed beneath the surface.
Marcus smiled, revealing white teeth. "Of course, Alpha." He stepped forward and placed the package on the desk with deliberate care.
Peter seized it and ripped it open with a flick of his wrist. He upended the contents onto the desk, releasing a cascade of glossy photographs. As he sorted through them, his eyes calculated each image’s potential. The most useful ones - the most incendiary - he set to one side. The others would serve as backups, insurance for future schemes. A slow, predatory smile spread across his face. "Excellent work, as always."
Peter reached into his desk drawer, withdrew a smaller but thicker envelope, and tossed it to Marcus. The warrior caught it deftly, opened it, and thumbed through the stack of bills inside. Satisfied that it contained the agreed amount, he nodded. As Marcus departed, closing the door softly behind him, Peter’s wife entered the office.
Luna Shelly glided around her mate’s desk, hips swaying with practiced seduction. She leaned over his shoulder, dark hair brushing his cheek, to examine what had been delivered. As she leafed through the photos he’d set aside, a wicked smile illuminated her face. The delicious chaos they could unleash with these images made her pulse quicken with excitement.
The two locked eyes and shared a conspiratorial grin, their minds already spinning with possibilities. This was going to be fun.
Bradley
Bradley sat in conference with Dr. Lorenzo, reviewing the latest - and still frustratingly fruitless - research on ancient pack treaties, when one of his warriors reached out through the mind-link. *Alpha, a package has arrived for you. Unmarked.* The warrior’s mental voice carried unmistakable concern.
Bradley paused the meeting, his instincts already prickling with unease. "Bring it to my office," he linked back. He also reached out to Sam. *To my office. Now.* Depending on the issue, he could delegate to his Beta, but his gut screamed that this was trouble.
Soon, a knock sounded, and the warrior opened the door. He said nothing but held up a package. No name appeared on it except Bradley’s, and no return address marked the exterior. Protocol was clear in such cases: the package must be opened in the Alpha’s presence to ensure it posed no physical threat to him or the pack. The warrior extended his hand, knowing from a preliminary scan that the contents weren’t a bomb or poison - but perhaps they contained an emotional explosive.
Sam entered at that moment, his expression questioning, concern flickering in his eyes. Bradley nodded at the warrior, indicating the man could leave. He extracted the letter and the smaller envelope inside. The letter was brief, almost mocking in its simplicity: ’From a concerned friend.’ The handwriting displayed a neat, anonymous scrawl designed to reveal nothing. He handed it to Sam, who frowned as he read.
Opening the smaller package, Bradley withdrew what appeared to be a pile of photographs. The top one showed Trishelle arriving back at Bloodmoon, her face pale but determined, and Bradley’s hands began to shake. Was this James’s way of torturing him even further? He leafed through photos showing her taking walks with that bastard, eating in what looked like an elegant dining room, and sitting in what seemed to be a carefully tended garden.
The last few pictures made his chest tighten, the air suddenly thick and impossible to breathe. They showed James and Trishelle having a picnic on a blanket spread across lush grass. The way James looked at her in the photo revealed everything - his feelings for her had grown as much as her belly, which was now very noticeable, a rounded curve beneath her yellow dress that made Bradley’s heart clench painfully.
The next photograph showed James caressing her baby bump, his hand splayed possessively over their child - *Bradley’s* child. Bradley’s jaw clenched so hard he thought his teeth might crack, and he could feel his canines elongating, pressing painfully against his gums. The final image showed James carrying Trishelle like a sleeping princess back into the house. His house. As if she belonged there. As if Bradley didn’t exist.
"Damn it," Bradley cursed and drove his fist into the desk. The solid wood cracked under the force, splintering beneath his knuckles. The photos fell from his other hand, scattering across the floor like fallen leaves in autumn.
Sam watched one land near his feet and bent to retrieve it. He refrained from whistling his shock at how clear each image was, how professionally captured. Whoever sent these wanted Bradley to harbor no doubts about what was happening with his mate. They wanted him to see every detail, to feel every moment of intimacy between them.
Dr. Lorenzo, who had been quietly observing from his corner of the office, jumped up and stepped back, clutching his chest. A strange look of fear crossed his scholarly features - he’d never witnessed an Alpha on the verge of losing control.
Sam looked up at his Alpha and almost buckled under the oppressive aura radiating from him. It was nearly visible, a dark, violent energy that seemed to darken the very air. Some pack members reached out through the mind-link, their voices tinged with alarm. *Alpha? What’s wrong?*
Sam wasn’t sure what to tell them, but he immediately linked all warriors to prepare. *All warriors, on high alert. Stand by for orders.* If Bradley went berserk, it would take more than Sam alone to subdue him. He even linked the terrified doctor, who had never seen Bradley lose his composure like this. *Lorenzo, prepare several tranquilizers, just in case. To my office, now.*
The doctor nodded frantically and fled the room. Bradley seemed lost in his own mind, his gaze fixed on the photo in Sam’s hand with an intensity that bordered on madness. Sam wasn’t sure how to reach him, how to pull him back from the edge.
Bradley saw red. He and his wolf existed in a state of shocked, white-hot fury that threatened to consume everything. How dare that bastard put his hands on what belonged to them? And how could his mate allow it? He glanced back at the photos scattered across the floor, forcing himself to look again despite the agony it caused. Trishelle didn’t appear disgusted or coerced in any of them. In the one with James’s hand on her stomach, her head tilted back, her eyes closed, she actually looked comfortable with his touch. Peaceful, even. Content.
Had she forgotten what James did to her? Had she somehow forgiven him? Had she given up on them - on Bradley? He shook his head in violent denial, the motion jerky and uncontrolled. NO. There was no way he would let her walk out of his life. He didn’t care what that stupid divorce document said, or that he should handle things through legal channels. He was tired of waiting, tired of being separated from his mate, tired of playing by rules that only seemed to benefit everyone but him.
He and his wolf were going to take matters into their own hands. NOW.
Sam heard Bradley’s bones crack and rearrange, the sound sickeningly loud in the quiet office, like branches snapping in a storm. Within moments, his massive black wolf stood there, breathing hard, teeth bared, eyes glowing with a feral light that promised violence.
"Oh, shit," Sam managed to say before the beast launched himself over the desk, nearly knocking Sam off his feet, and bolted out the door with single-minded purpose.
Sam shifted immediately, his own brown wolf exploding from his skin in a rush of transformation. He linked out orders while trying to catch up with his Alpha, his paws pounding against the floor. *He’s heading to Bloodmoon! All able warriors, follow me! Now!* But the rage fueling Bradley made him faster than ever before, a blur of black fur and fury that seemed to devour the distance. Soon Sam lost sight of him in the dense forest that bordered their territory and Bloodmoon.
He needed to reach Bradley fast, or there would be a bloodbath today - one that could destroy everything they’d worked for.
Rallying the warriors as they converged on his position, Sam paused long enough to give clear instructions. He even asked one of them to bring Samuel along, certain that Trishelle would need support as well when this storm broke over her. As Sam ran, pushing his wolf to its limits, Councilwoman Seers linked him, her mental voice sharp with alarm. *Samuel, what in the gods’ names is happening? I can feel his murderous aura from here!*
Sam quickly explained the situation, his thoughts racing as fast as his paws. Cynthia sighed in frustration, the sound echoing in his head like a death knell. *He’s just declared war, you fool. I was going to have to work incredibly hard to extract him from the hot water he’s now decided to dive headfirst into.*
Cynthia raised her head and prayed to whatever gods might be listening that something or someone would be able to stop Bradley from making a decision that could ruin not just his life, but the lives of everyone he loved.
