The other side of Reincarnation
Part one hundred eighty seven— Two Against One
The dimension held silence the way a held breath holds itself — not peace, but the specific quiet that exists in the half-second before something catastrophic finally lets go.
Kai stood in the middle of a world entirely his own making. An artificial sky stretched overhead, mountains carved along a horizon that existed only because he'd willed them into being, and a vast ocean curled around land he'd shaped from nothing but Null and intention.
Everything here answers to me.
And still, two beings stand in front of me who could unmake all of it without particularly trying.
Vorath.
The Void Dragon.
Skorne stood beside him, cold and patient.
Neither looked remotely impressed by what Kai had built.
Kai rested a hand against his blade's hilt, then felt a familiar presence settle in behind him.
He turned.
"Mom?"
"I came to watch," Ashley said, arms folded, entirely unbothered by his obvious alarm.
"You really shouldn't be here."
"I know," she said. "I'm curious anyway."
She smiled faintly.
"Don't hold back because I'm watching."
Something proud had already settled into her expression.
"I won't."
Kai turned back toward the two dragons.
Vorath cracked his neck.
"So you're the one who pulled us into this little world of yours."
"Yes."
Skorne studied the terrain before placing a hand against the ground.
Frost spread instantly beneath his feet.
Not ordinary ice.
Kai realized that immediately.
It was freezing the energy itself. The dimension's own foundation resisted it, straining visibly beneath the unnatural cold.
"Analysis complete," Null-Subconsciousness reported. "Target: Skorne. Primary authority: Absolute Frost. Warning — interferes with matter, energy, atmosphere, and spatial structure alike."
"You're going to be troublesome," Kai said.
"You haven't seen anything yet," Skorne replied.
Vorath vanished.
Kai's eyes tracked him half a second too late.
A fist buried itself in his stomach.
The impact sent Kai tearing through three separate mountains before he caught his balance in midair.
No blood.
No real damage.
He smiled.
"Fast."
Vorath was already behind him.
"You're slow."
Kai ducked beneath the follow-up strike and countered with a kick.
Vorath blocked it cleanly.
The impact shattered the artificial sky itself.
Dozens of exchanges followed in seconds.
Punch.
Block.
Kick.
Counter.
The very air screamed beneath the pace of their movements.
Then frost suddenly crawled up Kai's leg.
"Got you," Skorne said.
Kai burned it away with a burst of raw Null before it could reach his waist.
A black sphere was already forming above him.
Vorath.
Void.
The sphere swallowed Kai whole.
Darkness consumed everything.
A heartbeat later, it detonated outward.
Kai flew clear—
straight into Skorne's waiting assault.
A wave of absolute frost crashed into him.
Kai barely managed to raise a barrier.
The barrier froze solid.
Then shattered beneath its own weight.
Kai cut through the advancing frost with his blade, only to feel the space behind the cut freeze the instant it separated.
He's freezing space itself.
"Confirmed," Null-Subconsciousness said. "Adjusting thermal resistance."
Skorne closed the distance.
His fist struck.
Kai blocked.
The impact sent both of them flying.
Before Kai could recover, Vorath appeared between them.
A wave of Void energy exploded outward.
Kai crossed his arms against it.
The entire landscape simply ceased to exist.
When the destruction finally cleared, Kai emerged from the wreckage.
His clothes were torn.
His body was bruised.
A thin cut stretched across his cheek.
He wiped the blood away.
"Two against one."
"You seem surprised," Vorath said.
"No."
Kai smiled.
"I'm entertained."
Skorne's expression hardened.
The ground began freezing beneath him.
Then the mountains.
Then the ocean.
The entire horizon slowly bled white as the temperature dropped beyond anything ordinary physics should have allowed.
Air froze.
Mana froze.
Space itself began to stiffen.
Ashley's eyes narrowed.
"That's dangerous."
Vorath opened a Void that swallowed Kai's position entirely.
Kai reappeared kilometers away—
directly in the path of a spear of absolute frost.
It grazed his shoulder.
The wound spread instantly.
Kai tore the frozen flesh free and allowed it to regenerate.
A moment later, Vorath's hand punched clean through his side.
Void energy detonated inside him.
Kai coughed blood.
"Found you," Vorath said.
Skorne froze Kai's left arm solid.
Vorath erased it entirely.
Skorne took his right the same way.
Vorath finished it just as cleanly.
Kai remained standing.
Nothing below either shoulder remained.
"Your arrogance will be your downfall," Skorne said.
"You thought you could face two True Dragons alone," Vorath added.
Kai looked down at where his arms should have been.
Then smiled.
Both arms regenerated instantly.
Whole again.
The dragons' smiles faded for the first time.
Kai rotated his wrists.
"Was that supposed to hurt?"
