The other side of Reincarnation
Part One Hundred Eleven — Ivy
"What other thing?"
I asked, still catching my breath.
My blade was retrieved, though I hadn't sheathed it yet.
I remained wary of whatever came next.
"Your naming ability."
Nyxara gestured toward the maid who had accompanied her.
She hadn't spoken a single word since arriving.
Sin-emarked.
I remembered that much from whatever Ignivar had explained.
One of the highest ranks a demon could achieve without crossing into Demon Lord status itself.
"I want to see it work properly."
"Firsthand."
She wants me to name someone.
Specifically, her own subordinate.
"Why?"
I asked carefully.
"Curiosity."
Nyxara's answer was simple.
"I've heard what it did to a girl who used to be your ordinary human companion."
"I'd like to understand the mechanism properly, rather than secondhand."
The maid herself remained silent.
She stood with the same quiet, practiced stillness I'd come to associate with people who had long since learned that drawing attention rarely served them well.
"What's your name?"
I asked her directly.
Her eyes immediately shifted toward Nyxara.
She waited.
A small, indulgent nod was all the permission she needed.
"I don't have one."
Her voice was quiet.
"Sin-emarked aren't typically given names."
"We're marked, not named."
"Different distinction entirely."
Marked, not named.
That's—
That's genuinely sad.
Put that plainly.
"Would you like one?"
I asked.
Something shifted in her expression.
Surprise, mostly.
Not at the offer itself—
But at the fact that the question had been offered to her at all rather than simply decided on her behalf.
"...Yes."
She finally answered.
I considered her for a long moment.
The same careful weighing I brought to every name I'd given.
Even under Nyxara's watchful, curious attention.
"Ivy."
I said it finally.
"From now on, that's your name."
――
The shift happened immediately.
Her aura, previously contained and controlled in the specific way sin-emarked demons apparently learned to hold themselves, suddenly flared outward.
A wave of power swept across the training grounds.
The ground itself trembled slightly beneath us.
<"Evolution detected.">
Anti-Subconsciousness's report came brief and clipped.
<"Rank transition: Sin-Emarked to Demon Lord. Nascent classification — not yet fully realized.">
She just jumped an entire tier.
From marked property to something approaching what Nyxara herself is.
Ivy stood there for a moment, visibly stunned.
She tested her own new presence carefully, almost uncertainly.
The expression on her face was one I'd seen before.
From Eris.
From Elaine.
From everyone else who had ever crossed that particular threshold because of me.
"That's—"
She began.
Her voice was steadier than it had been a moment ago.
Something new had settled into it.
Something certain.
"That's not possible."
"Nobody skips ranks like that."
"Not without decades..."
Her eyes widened slightly.
"...centuries of proper ascension."
"He does that."
Nyxara sounded delighted.
She watched the entire transformation with genuine, open pleasure.
"Rather remarkable, isn't it?"
Then she turned toward Ivy properly.
There was something almost proud in her expression.
"Your new master is Kai."
Her voice was simple.
Absolute.
"Obey him."
Ivy didn't argue.
I want to note that clearly.
Because somehow, that unsettled me more than actual resistance would have.
There was no hesitation.
No confusion.
No attempt to question what had just happened.
Only total, immediate, unquestioning acceptance.
The kind that suggested her loyalty had simply transferred wholesale the instant the name took hold.
"Understood."
Ivy bowed properly toward me.
None of the hesitation from earlier remained.
"I am yours to command, Master Kai."
...I have a Demon Lord-adjacent subordinate now.
That escalated considerably faster than I was prepared for.
"You don't have to call me that."
I said it mostly out of reflex.
"I know."
Ivy's answer carried something almost like humor now, woven naturally into her newly settled composure.
"I choose to anyway."
――
Nyxara watched the entire exchange with evident satisfaction.
Her hands clasped together like a woman who had just confirmed something she'd suspected all along.
"Well..."
She finally turned her attention back toward me.
"That's confirmed everything I actually came here to learn."
"Your Null genuinely does what the reports suggested."
Her expression remained fascinated.
"Fascinating, honestly, watching it work up close rather than hearing about it secondhand."
"Are you leaving now?"
I asked.
Hopeful.
Despite myself.
"For now."
She said it entirely unbothered by the obvious relief in my tone.
"I'll be back, eventually."
"You're far too interesting a toy to simply forget about."
Great.
Something to look forward to, apparently.
――
She left the same way she'd arrived.
No ceremony.
No warning.
Simply present one moment—
And gone the next.
Leaving Ivy standing quietly at my side.
A whole new member of whatever this growing family had become.
And considerably more questions than answers trailing in her wake.
Add her to the list, I suppose.
The Kobayashi family keeps growing in directions I genuinely never planned for.
